LEARNING OBEDIENCE

HEBREWS 5:1-10

“Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered…

”

Hebrews 5:8

There is nothing more difficult than self-discipline.  Bending our will in order for it to assume a particular purpose is a difficult task for us.  It is sometimes much more difficult to do so in obedience to God’s will.

Jesus, who instructs us in everything, shows us in himself the wisdom of obedience to God and the final participation in God’s glory to which it leads.

God does not ask for our obedience to Him for its own sake, but as the way to reach what He has prepared for the joy of his sons and daughters.  We can learn this from Jesus as well.

Prayer: Holy Father, we thank you for preparing your sons and daughters to participate in your glory.  Help us to reach it through our obedience to you. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

APRENDIENDO LA OBEDIENCIA

HEBREOS 5:1-10

“Aunque  era Hijo, por lo que padeció,

aprendió la obediencia”

Hebreos 5:8

No hay cosa tan difícil como el vencernos a nosotros mismos. Doblegar nuestra voluntad para asumirla en un propósito determinado es un asunto difícil para nosotros. Es a veces mucho más difícil si es obediencia a la voluntad de Dios

Jesucristo, que en todo nos enseña, nos muestra en sí la sabiduría de la obediencia a Dios y la participación final de la gloria de Dios, a que ésta conlleva.

Dios no nos pide la obediencia a Él como mero capricho, sino como el camino para llegar al disfrute de aquello que ha preparado para el goce de sus hijos e hijas. También hemos de aprender de Jesús en esto.

Oración: Padre Santo, te damos gracias por preparar para tus hijos el goce de tu gloria. Ayúdanos a alcanzarlo, por la obediencia a ti. En el nombre de Jesús. Amén.

“And Jesus wept”

John11:35

It is almost impossible to read these words without thinking also about these: “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities.” (Isaiah 53:5) Both expressions speak to us of a Christ close to our lives.  These verses tell us that in Him we have a friend, a feeling and true friend who suffers like we do and who knows our sorrows.

Saying that Christ is our friends may seem easy, but in light of the reality of human changeability, knowing that we have a true and faithful friend is one of the greatest treasures that we can possess.  And Jesus is surely our friend. He has done the same thing for us that he did for Lazarus, and upon seeing his sacrifice we can only exclaim:  Look how much he loves us!

Prayer: Father, help us this day to live with the consciousness that in Christ we have our friend, so that we may be strengthened by it and better serve him.  In his name, Amen.

Es casi imposible leer estas palabras sin que vengan a nosotros estas otras: “Mas él, herido fue por nuestras rebeliones, molido por nuestros pecados”

Ambas expresiones nos hablan de un Cristo cercano a nuestras vidas, nos habla de que en Él reside un amigo, un sensible y verdadero amigo que sufre como nosotros y conoce nuestras penas.

Decir que Cristo es nuestro amigo parece cosa fácil, pero ante la realidad  de la mudanza humana, el saber que tenemos un amigo fiel y verdadero, es uno de los más grandes tesoros que podamos poseer. Y ciertamente Jesús es nuestro amigo. Ha hecho por nosotros lo mismo que por Lázaro, y al ver su sacrificio no podemos más que exclamar. ¡Mirad cuánto nos ama!

Oración: Padre, ayúdanos en este día a vivir con la conciencia de que en Cristo tenemos nuestro amigo, para que encontremos fuerza en ello y que le sirvamos mejor. En su nombre. Amén.

THE END OF THE DRAMA

LUKE 24:50-53

“Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity...”

Hebrews 6:1a

After a period of forty days of appearances by the Resurrected Christ, there had to be a final moment for Jesus to return to his glory. The term “heaven” that is used here needs to be understood, rather than as a “place, as a “state” in which we will forever remain without separation from God. Luke tells us that the disciples were “very happy” when they returned to Jerusalem after seeing Jesus for the last time.  In spite of the ascension, or perhaps because of it, they were sure that Jesus had not left them, but that he was with them for always. The Ascension is the glorious finale to the terrestrial drama of the One who, being divine in nature, did not insist on being equal to God, and was born as a human being. The life of any human being is a progressive process that should lead us to maturity.  Like the seed that grows until it becomes a leafy tree, our walk towards personal perfection should transpire similarly.  The Ascension of Jesus reveals that completeness is reached only at the end and that, moreover, it is a gift from God.

Prayer: Eternal God, make me desire to be united to Christ, in whom our human nature has been exalted.  Perfect my life day by day, so that in the end I can obtain the completeness that I desire.  Amen.

                                                                                                                                      

Ascensión del Señor

EL FIN DE UN DRAMA

LUCAS 24:50-53

“Sigamos aprendiendo más y más, hasta que

lleguemos a ser cristianos maduros.”

Hebreos 6:1a

Después de transcurrir cuarenta días de apariciones del Resucitado, era necesario que hubiera un momento final en el que Jesús volviera a su gloria. El término “cielo” empleado aquí hay que entenderlo no como un “lugar”, sino como un “estado” en el que estaremos para siempre sin separarnos de Dios. Lucas nos dice al final que los discípulos volvieron a Jerusalén “muy contentos”, o sea, que a pesar de la ascensión, o quizá debido a ella, estaban seguros de que Jesús no se había alejado, sino que estaba con ellos para siempre. La Ascensión es el final glorioso del drama terrenal de Aquel que siendo de naturaleza divina, no insistió en ser igual a Dios, y nació como ser humano. La vida de cualquier ser humano es un proceso progresivo que debe conducirnos a la madurez. Como la semilla que crece hasta convertirse en un árbol frondoso, así también ha de transcurrir nuestro camino hacia la perfección personal. La Ascensión de Jesús nos revela que la plenitud se alcanza solamente al final y que, además, es un don de Dios.

Oración: Dios eterno, haz que desee estar junto a Cristo, en quien nuestra naturaleza humana ha sido enaltecida. Perfecciona día a día mi vida, para que al final pueda obtener la plenitud que anhelo. Amén.

“Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.”

Hebrews 12:14

Arguments seem to be inevitable. We have opinions which are different from those of the people around us.  Our goal is to express our opinions; we want to be heard.  A courteous discussion sometimes leads to an exchange of heated words; words that we later wish could be retracted. These heated interactions can cause a lot of harm.  Our actions speak louder than our words.  Instead of being known for our love, we can become known for our contentiousness. Such actions are inappropriate in any situation and the situation worsens when the people involved are members of the Church.  It is difficult to seek peace and holiness while we are fighting with others.

It may be necessary for me to keep my opinion to myself in order to be able to listen to another’s point of view.  When I do so, I am seeking peace and showing love.

Prayer: Oh God, I will seek peace, even if it means keeping my thoughts quiet.  Help me to remember that it is more important to show your love than to defend my own opinions. Amen.

ARMONÍA, NO DESUNIÓN

ROMANOS 12:9-18

“Procuren estar en paz con todos y llevar una vida santa; pues sin la santidad, nadie podrá ver al Señor”

Hebreos 12:14

Las disputas parecen inevitables. Tenemos opiniones que difieren de quienes nos rodean. Nuestra meta es expresar nuestra opinión, queremos ser escuchados. Una discusión cortesa a menudo da paso a un intercambio de palabras acaloradas, palabras que más tarde deseamos pudieran ser retractadas. Estos intercambios acalorados pueden causar mucho daño. Nuestras acciones hablan más fuertes que nuestras palabras. En vez de ser conocidos por nuestro amor, podemos desarrollar fama de contenciosos. Tales hechos son impropios en cualquier situación y la situación empeoras cuando las personas involucradas son miembros de la Iglesia. Es difícil procurar la paz y la santidad mientras peleamos con otros.

Quizás sea necesario que me guarde mi opinión para poder escuchar el punto de vista de alguien más. Al hacerlo, busco la paz, muestro amor.

Oración: Oh Dios, buscaré la paz, aunque eso signifique callar lo que pienso. Que recuerde que mostrar tu amor es más importante que defender mi opinión. Amén.

LOVE PRAISE FROM GOD

JOHN 12:35-43

“…for they loved praise from men more than praise from God.”

According to naturalists, a certain species of butterflies are able to perform a unique disappearing act.  Also known as “dead leaf butterflies,” these insects have brilliant colors on the top part of their wings, but on the bottom part they have lines similar to a dead leaf.  As it flies, this butterfly produces a sparkle of colors that are easily detected.  But when it lands on the ground, the colors disappear and the butterfly transforms into a “dead leaf.”  It becomes almost invisible because its wings take on the appearance of marks resembling holes and mushrooms.

Believers in Christ sometimes change their appearance in order to avoid detection. That is what some religious leaders did in John 12.  They believed in Jesus, but they hid it for fear of losing their positions. We must show our true colors for the Lord at every occasion and not renounce our Christian identity when we feel threatened.  Yes, we can avoid being ridiculed by the world by acting in secret, but that proves that we love praise from human beings more than from God.  Empower yourself more by being what you should be rather than by hiding what you are.

Prayer: God of goodness, give me the courage I need that I may never deny you. Amen.

AMAR LA GLORIA DE DIOS

JUAN 12:35-43

“Porque amaban más la gloria de los hombres

que la gloria de Dios”

Según los naturalistas, las mariposas pueden llevar a cabo un acto único de desaparición. También conocidas como “las mariposas de hojas muertas” estos insectos tienen colores brillantes en la parte superior de sus alas, pero por debajo tienen líneas semejantes a una hoja muerta. Mientras vuela, esta mariposa produce un destello de colores fácilmente detectable. Pero cuando se posa en tierra, los colores desapareen y la mariposa se transforma en una “hoja muerta”. Se vuelve casi invisible pues la apariencia que tiene sus alas, incluye marcas que parecen agujeros y hongos. Los creyentes en Cristo a veces cambian su apariencia para evitar ser detectados. Eso fue lo que hicieron algunos líderes religiosos en Juan 12. Creían en Jesús, pero lo ocultaron por temor a perder su posición. Hemos de mostrar nuestros colores por el Señor en toda ocasión y no renunciar a nuestra identidad cristiana cuando nos sentimos amenazados. Sí, podemos evitar que el mundo nos ridiculice andando secretamente, pero eso prueba que amamos más la alabanza de los seres humanos que la de Dios.  Esfuérzate más por ser lo que deberías ser que por ocultar lo que eres.

Oración: Dios de bondad, hazme lo suficientemente valiente para nunca negarte. Amén.

A GREAT LESSON

LUKE 18:18-23

“Jesus said: ‘Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.”

Luke 18:22

When Mother Theresa visited Australia, a young monk was designated to accompany her.  Moved by what he would learn being close to this great woman, the young man had only dreamt of such a marvelous opportunity.  And yet, being close to her, he was unable to speak even a single word, because there were always others that she first had to attend. The young man felt frustrated.  Mother Theresa finished her visit and was about to fly to New Guinea.  In frustration, the young man asked her, “If I pay for my ticket to New Guinea, may I sit close to you on the plane in order to speak and learn?”  Mother Theresa looked at him and then asked him: “Do you have enough money to purchase a ticket to New Guinea?”  “Yes,” replied the youth anxiously.  “Then,” she said, “Give that money to the poor.  You will learn more from that than from what I could say to you.”

Let us ask ourselves today:  How can I help the poor of this world?

Prayer: Eternal God, we give you thanks for people like Mother Theresa, for her wisdom and her work. Inspire us also to help the poor of the world. Amen.

GRAN LECCIÓN

LUCAS 18:18-23

“Jesús dijo: vende todo lo que tienes y dalo a los pobres,

Cuando la Madre Teresa visitó Australia, se designó a un joven fraile para que le acompañara. Emocionado por lo que aprendería estando cerca de esta gran mujer, el joven soñó con esta maravillosa oportunidad. Sin embargo, estando cerca de ella, no pudo hablarle ni una sola palabra, pues siempre había otros que ella debía atender primero. El joven se sintió frustrado. Madre Teresa terminó su visita y debía volar a Nueva Guinea. Desesperado, el fraile le preguntó: “Si pago mi pasaje a Nueva Guinea, ¿puedo sentarme cerca de usted en el avión para poder hablar y aprender?” Madre Teresa  le miró, luego le preguntó: “ ¿Tiene usted suficiente dinero para pagar un viaje a Nueva Guinea?” “Sí” respondió el joven ansiosamente. “Entonces” dijo ella “dé ese dinero a los pobres. Aprenderá más de eso que de lo que yo le diga.”

Preguntémonos hoy: ¿Cómo puedo ayudar a los pobres de este  mundo?

Oración: Dios eterno, te damos gracias por personas como Madre Teresa, por su sabiduría y su obra. Inspíranos también para ayudar a los pobres del mundo. Amén.

UNAVOIDABLE RESPONSIBILITY

PROVERBS 22:1-11

“Train a child in the way he should go,

And when he is old he will not turn from it.”

Proverbs 22:6

There is so much talk in the news media about juvenile delinquency that it is enough to make one lose faith in the future of this world’s nations.  For my part, I believe that delinquency has no age, and I am convinced that for every delinquent who is a minor, there are hundreds of young people who are loving and creative; and among them, hundreds who trust in God as Lord and caretaker of their lives. Every day there are greater numbers of young people who seek the way to renew themselves and to change the things that bother them within their social environment.

 But there is a way of battling delinquency:  love and harmony in the family home.  The basis for delinquency in this world has its origin, for the most part, in homes where children do not receive the attention they require.  Let us set our sons and daughters on the pathway of the Teacher of Galilee, knowing that they will never depart from it. As citizens of the Kingdom, we have an unavoidable responsibility in the education and care of our children.

Prayer: Permit us, oh God, to raise our sons and daughters in such a way that they will avoid major evils when they are adults. Amen.

RESPONSABILIDAD INELUDIBLE

PROVERBIOS 22:1-11

“Instruye al niño en su camino, y aun

cuando fuere viejo, no se apartará de él”

Proverbios 22:6

Se habla tanto en la prensa de la delincuencia juvenil, que se llega a perder la fe en el porvenir de las naciones de este mundo. Por mi parte, creo que la delincuencia no tiene edad y tengo la convicción de que por cada menor delincuente, hay centenares de jóvenes que aman y crean; y entre ellos, cientos que confían en Dios como Señor y cuidador de sus vidas. Día a día es mayor el número de jóvenes que buscan la forma de renovarse y cambiar las cosas que le estorban en la sociedad en que viven. Pero hay una forma para combatir la delincuencia: el amor y la comprensión en el hogar. La base de la delincuencia del mundo tiene su origen, en su mayoría, en los hogares donde no se les da la debida atención a los niños. Cultivemos en nuestros hogares el amor y la armonía. Encaminemos a nuestros hijos por los pasos del Maestro de Galilea, sabiendo que nunca se apartará de ese camino. Como ciudadanos del Reino, tenemos una responsabilidad ineludible en la educación y cuidado de los niños.

Oración: Permítenos, oh Dios, cuidar a nuestros hijos e hijas para evitar males mayores cuando sean adultos. Amén

GOD, MY SUPPORT

PSALM 23

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”                   

John 10:11

If we look at things from the point of view of sheep, we see that they have very many problems. Sheep do not have good vision.  They cannot run very fast. They don’t have claws or sharp teeth to defend themselves. Moreover, a fat and wooly sheep has difficulties lying down. Its body can lose its balance, and then suddenly the sheep cannot get up again without the shepherd’s aid. Nevertheless, a good shepherd is always aware of these limitations while caring for his sheep and guaranteeing their daily pasture.

It is so easy for us to become lazy and self-satisfied in our lives!  Like the person who spends hours watching television, our spiritual life also watches as days go by:  we become complacent and passive. Then when things don’t go well, we cry out:  Help, I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!  It is so good to know that we have a Shepherd who is always ready to help us to regain our balance!

Prayer: Lord I thank you for lifting my spirits when I am down. Thank you for restoring my life with you.  In the name of Jesus, amen.  

DIOS, MI SOSTÉN

SALMO 23

“Yo soy el buen pastor. El buen pastor

da su vida por las ovejas”

Mirando las cosas desde el punto de vista de las ovejas, ellas tienen muchísimos problemas. Las ovejas no tienen buena visión. No pueden correr muy rápido. No tienen garras ni dientes afilados para protegerse. Además, una oveja gruesa y bien lanuda tiene problemas para  acostarse. Puede perder el equilibrio de su cuerpo, y de repente no puede levantarse sin la ayuda del pastor. Sin embargo, el buen pastor siempre está atento ante tales limitaciones para cuidar a sus ovejas y garantizarles el pasto diario. ¡Qué fácil nos es a nosotros volvernos perezosos y satisfechos en nuestras vidas! Como el que pasa horas mirando la televisión, así también nuestra vida espiritual contempla el pasar de los días: mostramos complacencia y pasividad. Entonces cuando las cosas no van bien gritamos: ¡Ayuda, me he caído y no puedo levantarme! ¡Qué bueno es saber que tenemos un  Pastor que siempre  está listo para ayudarnos a recobrar nuestro equilibrio!

Oración: Señor, te doy gracias por levantarme el ánimo cuando estoy decaído. Gracias por restaurarme a la vida contigo. En el nombre de Jesús, amén.

PSALM 148

“Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted; his splendor is above the earth and the heavens!”

Psalm 148:13

Someone suggested that each morning I should make a list of the gifts God has granted me for which I should be grateful. At the end of each day, I should write something for which to praise the Lord. I was determined to do this over a long period of time. Counting my blessings seemed simple. On good days it seemed appropriate to be thankful to God, but what should I say on those days when I was depressed, or when everything went wrong? There are many days when thankfulness doesn't seem appropriate. I finally tried it. Each day, for a month, I wrote down one thing for which to be grateful in my calendar. What a surprise!  Even on those routine, boring and bad days, I was able to think of at least one reason to praise God.

I don’t keep a written daily account anymore, but not a day goes by without thinking of a good reason for which to be thankful. Praise is much more than mere words.

Prayer: Thank you, God, for all that you have given to me. I rejoice in the knowledge that when I praise you, the angels in heaven praise you as well. Amen

AGRADECIDOS

SALMO 148

“ ¡Alaben todos el nombre del Señor,

pues solo su nombre es altísimo!

Salmo 148:13

Alguien me sugirió que cada mañana  hiciera una lista de los dones que Dios me ha concedido por los cuales debo estar agradecido. Al final del día, debía escribir algo por lo cual alabar al Señor. Durante mucho tiempo estuve renuente a hacerlo. Contar mis bendiciones parecía simplista. En los días buenos parecía apropiado agradecer a Dios, pero ¿Qué decir en aquellos días  en los que estaba deprimido, o cuando todo iba mal? Hay muchos días en los que la alabanza no parece apropiada. Finalmente lo intenté. Cada día, durante un mes, escribí en mi calendario una cosa por la cual estaba agradecido.  ¡Qué sorpresa! Aún en los días rutinarios, aburridos y malos, pude pensar al menos en una razón para alabar a Dios.

Ya no llevo un recuento diario, pero no pasa un día sin que piense en una buena razón por la cual estar agradecido. La alabanza es mucho más que meras palabras.

Oración: Gracias Dios, por todo lo que me has dado. Me regocija saber que cuando te alabo, también los ángeles te alaban en el cielo. Amén.

CHANGE YOUR PRAYER

ROMANS 5:1-5

“The testing of your faith produces perseverance.”

James 1:3

We face new challenges every day, and at times our problems distract us. Instead of finding comfort in prayer, our minds fluctuate between thinking about the past and creating future fantasies when everything will work out well. There was a time when I almost could not even pray. A friend advised me: “Change your prayers.  Instead of asking ‘why?’ ask God what you can learn from your situation.”

 I followed my friend’s advice.  I still have problems but my perspective has changed. Instead of allowing worries to overwhelm me, my problems turned into opportunities to learn and to trust in God. Slowly, the pain for the loss of a loved one turned into a more precious memory and became less painful. Difficulties in personal relationships taught me to be patient. Asking God what we can learn from difficult situations can take away some of the pain of the realities that we cannot change.  In all things God works for good.

Prayer: Oh God, when facing difficult situations, show us where you are working and guide us to understand you. Amen.

CAMBIA TU ORACIÓN

ROMANOS 5:1-5

“La prueba de vuestra fe produce paciencia”

Santiago 1:3

Cada día enfrentamos nuevos desafíos, y a veces los problemas nos distraen. En lugar de encontrar solaz en la oración, nuestras mentes fluctúan entre repensar el pasado y crear fantasías futuras cuando todas las cosas estarán bien. En una ocasión casi no podía orar. Un amigo me aconsejó: “Cambia  tus oraciones. En lugar de preguntar ¿Por qué? Pregúntale a Dios qué puedes aprender de tu situación”. Seguí el consejo de mi amigo. Todavía tengo problemas pero mi perspectiva ha cambiado. En lugar de abrumarme con la preocupación, mis problemas se convirtieron en oportunidades para aprender y confiar en Dios. Lentamente, el dolor por la pérdida de un ser amado se convirtió en un recuerdo más precioso y menos doloroso. Las dificultades en las relaciones personales  me enseñaron a ser paciente. Preguntarle a Dios qué podemos aprender de las situaciones difíciles, puede quitar algo de dolor en las realidades que no podemos cambiar. En todas las cosas Dios obra para bien.

Oración: Oh Dios, al enfrentar situaciones difíciles,  muéstranos dónde estás obrando y guíanos a entenderte. Amén.

EACH PERSON’S BURDENS

MATTHEW 11:25-30

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Matthew 11:28

Every burden that weighs upon humanity cannot be alleviated through conversation, speeches, or volunteer service programs.  Many of these are of a spiritual nature and only He who knows that person knows how to help relieve his or her burden.

Consider this example:  A woman was traveling down a mountain carrying a rather heavy basket on her head filled with vegetables.  When she reached the roadway, a truck passed by.  The truck driver stopped the vehicle and said to her: “Climb in the back, I’ll give you a lift.”  A few minutes later, he looked through his rear view mirror to see how the woman was doing, and saw her comfortably seated, but with the heavy basket still on top of her head.

If we have come to Jesus, who can help us, we should lay down our burdens so that He can relieve them with tenderness and compassion, thereby giving us the spiritual rest that we need.

Prayer: Our God and our Lord, we lay down before you the burdens that overwhelm us .  Through Jesus, Your Son, extend your help to us. Amen.   

LAS CARGAS DE CADA CUAL

MATEO 11:25-30

“Venid a mí todos los que estáis trabajados

y cargados, y yo os haré descansar”

No todas  las cargas que pesan sobre la humanidad son aliviadas por charlas, discursos o programas de beneficencia o servicio. Muchas de estas son de carácter espiritual y solamente Aquel que conoce a la persona, sabe cómo ayudarla a aliviar su carga.

Consideremos este ejemplo: Una señora que venía bajando de una montaña traía en su cabeza una canasta repleta de verduras que pesaba bastante. Cuando llegó a la calzada pasó un camión. El chofer deteniendo el vehículo le dijo: “Suba atrás, la voy a llevar”. Al cabo de algunos minutos, el hombre miró por el espejo retrovisor para ver como iba la señora, y la vio sentada cómodamente, pero todavía cargando el canasto en la cabeza.

Si hemos venido a Jesús, que nos puede ayudar, debemos entregarle nuestras cargas para que Él las alivie con ternura y compasión y así nos dé el descanso espiritual que necesitamos.

Oración: Dios y Señor nuestro, te entregamos las cargas que nos agobian. Por Jesús, Tu Hijo, extiéndenos tu ayuda. Amén.

PSALM 116

“Go and do likewise.”

Luke 10:37

This story tells us many things about service.  It is true that often those who need our care cannot blame anyone other than themselves for their needs. But it is undeniable that at times we act like (those rebuked by) the teacher of the law in Luke 10, who shows his displeasure when he says that not all those who love God and pray to him, respond to the call of another. And there is the Levite, so worried about conducting his service in the temple that he didn’t have time to serve the man on the side of the road. We can observe two things about the Samaritan. First: that he was willing to help. Secondly: his credit was good, since even the innkeeper trusted that he would pay for the victim’s care. The lesson is clear:  anyone who needs our help is our neighbor. It is not enough to feel compassion for people.  The fact that these people may create their own problems at times is no excuse for us to withhold our help from them. God has heard our cry for mercy. Thanks to Him we are now able to hear and run to another’s cry for help.

Prayer: Beloved Jesus, I want to “go and do likewise,” having you as the guide for my actions. Amen.

“Pues ve y haz tú lo mismo”

Lucas 10:37

Esta historia nos dice mucho acerca del servicio. Es verdad que muchas veces los que necesitan nuestro cuidado no pueden echarle la culpa más que a ellos mismos por sus necesidades. Pero es innegable que a veces actuamos como el maestro de la ley en Lucas 10, quien  muestra su descontento cuando dice que no todos los que adoran a Dios y le oran, oyen el llamado de otros. Y ahí está el Levita, tan preocupado en conducir el servicio en el templo, que no tenía tiempo para servir al hombre al lado del camino. Del samaritano podemos observar dos cosas. La primera : él estuvo dispuesto a ayudar. Segundo: su crédito era bueno, ya que aun el hombre del alojamiento confió en él para que pagara la cuenta de la víctima. La lección es clara: todo el que necesita nuestra ayuda es nuestro prójimo. No es suficiente sentir compasión por las personas. El que estas personas se busquen en ocasiones sus propios problemas, no es razón para que no brindemos nuestra ayuda. Dios ha oído nuestro llanto de misericordia. Gracias a Él ahora estamos capacitados para oír y socorrer el llanto de los demás.

Oración: Amado Jesús, quiero “ir y hacer lo mismo” teniéndote a ti como guía de mis acciones. Amén.

LOVE ENDURES ALL THINGS

1 CORINTHIANS 13

“When Israel was a child, I loved him…My people are determined to turn from me.”

Hosea 11:1, 7

If you want to go through life with a minimal amount of pain, do not love anyone. Each time you allow yourself to love someone you open the door to pain. A person who falls in love and who gets married can shed many tears.  Parents who love their children will suffer much pain watching them grow up. A medical professional who is sincerely interested in his patients will experience pain when they die.  We can all save ourselves much pain if we do not become emotionally attached to someone, but we would also miss out on some of life’s greatest joys. The more we love, the more we suffer.  This is a certainty; but the road of generous love is also the road to some of our greatest joys. Loving others makes us vulnerable to love and to frustrations, but the compensations are great. Let us choose to love, in spite of the pain that it can bring.

Prayer: Lord, we know that love has its price, but teach us to love. Amen.

Si quieres pasar por la vida con el mínimo de dolor, no ames a nadie. Cada vez que te permites amar a alguien, abres la puerta al dolor. Una persona que se enamora y se casa puede llegar a derramar muchas lágrimas. Los padres que aman a sus hijos sufrirán muchos dolores al verlos crecer. Un profesional de la medicina verdaderamente interesado en sus pacientes siente dolor cuando mueren. Podemos ahorrarnos mucho dolor si no nos ligamos emocionalmente a alguien, pero también nos perderemos algunos de los mayores gozos de la vida. Cuanto más amamos, más sufrimos. Esto es cierto; pero el camino del amor desprendido es también el camino a algunos de nuestros mayores gozos. Amar a otros nos hace vulnerables al dolor y a las frustraciones, pero grandes son las compensaciones. Escojamos amar, a pesar del dolor que pueda conllevar.

Oración: Señor, sabemos que el amor tiene su precio, pero enséñanos a amar. Amén.

THE PERFECT FAMILY

NUMBERS 12:1-9

“Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.”

1 Thessalonians 5:15

The perfect family does not exist, at least not as you and I would wish that others and everything around us were perfect.  As far as I can tell, no family escapes conflict or contradiction. In some families the conflicts become so serious that they are called “dysfunctional families”. There are days when we get up and we love everybody around us and others when we wish we’d never gotten out of bed. In spite of it all, on any one of these days, we have a family that, with its imperfections, remains with us for better and for worse. 

Today is the day that I will regard my family (and that also includes my church family) with love in my eyes and with the knowledge that if I am not perfect, neither can I expect perfection from those who live with me. Enjoy their company, their laughter, their craziness; embrace them when they need you and as well as when they don’t; listen to them, place yourself on the same level as the little ones and make them feel loved and respected….And when you begin to feel a change in the way that you treat them and see them, you will be able to see that they too have changed the way they see you and treat you.  The perfect family begins with love for those whom you have nearest to you.

Prayer: Eternal God, You alone are perfect, but I ask that you will awaken in me the desire to walk in paths of perfection so that my family will also be able to walk on the same paths. Amen.

LA FAMILIA PERFECTA

NÚMEROS 12:1-9

“Procuren siempre hacer el bien,

tanto entre ustedes como con los demás”

1 Tesalonicenses 5:15

La familia perfecta no existe, al menos como tú y como yo quisiéramos que fueran perfectos los demás y todo lo que nos rodea. De aquí que no hay familia sin conflictos o contradicciones. En algunas familias los conflictos llegan a ser tan graves son llamadas “familias disfuncionales”. Hay días que nos levantamos y que amamos todo a nuestro alrededor y otros que desearíamos no habernos levantado de la cama. A pesar de todo, en cualquiera de estos días, tenemos una familia que, con sus imperfecciones, nos acompaña en las buenas y en las malas. Hoy es el día de ver mi familia (e incluye también a la familia de la fe) con ojos de amor y saber que si yo no soy perfecto, no puedo exigir perfección a quienes viven conmigo. Disfruta su compañía, sus risas, sus locuras, abrázalos cuando te necesiten y cuando no también, escúchalos, ponte al nivel de los pequeños y hazlos sentir amados y respetados… Y cuando empieces a cambiar la manera en cómo los trates y los veas, podrás ver que ellos también han cambiado su manera de verte y tratarte. La familia perfecta empieza por el amor a aquél que tienes más cerca.

Oración: Eterno Dios, sólo tú eres perfecto, pero despierta en mí el deseo de andar en caminos de perfección para que mi familia también pueda andar por los mismos caminos. Amén.

IN THE PRIVACY OF OUR FAMILY HOME 

LUKE 15:11-32

“On what are you basing this confidence of yours?”

Isaiah 36:4

We sometimes waste precious moments seeking afar for things we have close at hand. We seek outside of our families for people to love and understand us while ignoring those who are near and dear to us. If there is something that I truly value and love and for which I live in gratitude to God, it is for my family. Especially for my parents and my sister.  They are the most precious gift that God has given me.  They have sustained me in those moments when life’s hard knocks have left me in ruins. Every day I appreciate more and more the moments that I spend with them: our intimate conversations; a movie we watch together; going out shopping; meeting to share a meal… It also causes me pain when I hurt or harm them, even without having meant to. Words laden with anger at vulnerable moments are wounding. But family is a very important thing.  If you don’t devote time to your loved ones, you are an incomplete human being.  I invite you today to do something special for those you love.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for our families, that source of protection and trust that you have given us in order to grow and mature as people.  Thank you because it is at my family’s breast that I began to know you, the Father who never forsakes His children. Amen.

LUCAS  15:11-32

A veces perdemos un tiempo valioso buscando afuera las cosas que tenemos cerca. Buscamos personas que nos amen y nos entiendan en el exterior, sin advertir que las tenemos cerca de nosotros. Si hay algo que valoro, amo y por lo que vivo agradecido de Dios es por mi familia. Sobre todo mis padres y mi hermana. Son el regalo más bello que Dios me ha dado. Mi sostén en momentos en que los golpes de la vida me han destrozado. Cada día aprecio más los momentos que paso con ellos: las conversaciones íntimas, ver una película juntos, salir de compras, reunirnos para comer… También me causa dolor cuando los hiero o lastimo, aún sin proponérmelo. Las palabras cargadas de ira en momentos de vulnerabilidad, laceran. Pero la familia es algo muy importante. Quien no dedica tiempo a sus seres queridos es un ser incompleto. Te hago una invitación en este día para que hagas algo especial por la gente que amas.

Oración: Gracias Señor, por la familia, ese fuente de protección y confianza que tú nos has dado para poder crecer y madurar como personas. Gracias porque en su seno comencé a conocerte a ti, el Padre que nunca abandona. Amén.

DEUTERONOMY  5:16

“My son, keep your father’s commands and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.”

Proverbs 6:20

There is a story about a boy who approached his mother one night and gave her a piece of paper upon which the following words were written:  “For mowing the grass: $5.00; for cleaning my room this week: $1.00; for going to the grocery store whenever you send me: $0.50; for taking care of my brother while you went to pay the phone bill: $0.25; for taking out the trash: 1.00; for getting good grades at school:      $5:00.  Total amount you owe me: $12.75”.

His mother read it and the recollections passed through her mind.  She took out a pen, turned over the sheet of paper, and noted the following: “For the nine months that I carried you while you grew inside of me: no charge.  For all the nights that I spent by your side, caring and praying for you: no charge.  For all the difficult moments and the tears you caused me throughout the years: no charge. For all the nights full of fear and for the worries that I knew I would have: no charge.  When you add it all up, the total sum of true love is at NO CHARGE.”  When he read it, the boy began to cry.  He looked at his mother and said, “Mom, I love you very much.”  Then he took the pen and in large letters wrote: “PAID IN FULL.”

Prayer: God of life, I thank you for the wonderful parents you gave me. Help me to always be able to give them the honor and love they deserve. Amen.

DEUTERONOMIO  5:16

“Cumple el mandamiento de tu padre,

y no te apartes de la enseñanza de tu madre”

Proverbios 6:20

Cuenta una historia que una noche, un niño se acercó a su madre y le entregó un papel en el que había escrito lo siguiente: “Por cortar el césped: 5.00; por limpiar mi habitación esta semana: 1.00; por ir a la bodega cuando me envías: 0.50; por cuidar a mi hermano mientras fuiste a pagar el teléfono: 0.25; por sacar la basura: 1.00; por sacar buenas notas en el colegio: 5.00. Total que me debes: 12.75”.

Su madre lo leyó y los recuerdos pasaron por su mente. Tomó la pluma, le dio la vuelta a la hoja y anotó lo siguiente: “Por lo nueve meses que te llevé mientras crecías en mi interior, “sin cargo”. Por todas las noches que estuve sentada a tu lado, cuidándote y orando por ti, “sin cargo”. Por todos los momentos difíciles y todas las lágrimas que causaste a través de los años, “sin cargo”. Por todas las noches de temor y por las preocupaciones que sabía que tendría, “sin cargo”. Cuando sumes todo, el costo total del verdadero amor es SIN CARGO”. Al leerlo, el niño comenzó a llorar. Miró a su madre y dijo: "Mamá te quiero mucho". Después tomó la pluma y con letras grandes escribió: "PAGADO EN SU TOTALIDAD”.

Oración: Dios de la vida, gracias te doy por los maravillosos padres que me diste, ayúdame para que siempre pueda honrarlos y amarlos como ellos merecen. Amén.
