THE PROMISES

2 PETER 1:3-8

Through his honor and glory he has given us his precious and wonderful promises…

2 Peter 1: 4 (CEB)

            Some believers are accustomed to take verses of one who promises in order to continue to be reminded of a promise of God every day.  The traditional hymn “All the promises of the Lord Jesus” reminds us that the said promises are great and faithful and that they have been given so that we will trust in them always.

Looking for the promises of a promise keeper we should not think that God works magically, giving us a Biblical text accommodating us or wanting to look for a necessary feeling for our short term situation.  It is better for us to trust in the divine direction that, through his promises, strengthens our faith.  In such a spirit, to share prayer is a testimony of trust in these faithful promises of God.

            The testimony of many brothers is that God speaks to us through these texts, exhorting us, animating us, and at times, why not also reprimand and admonish.  To experience this “speaking” of God with us is one of the precious things of the communion that establishes our devotional life. 

Prayer: Lord, we give you thanks for your promises.  We give you thanks because they prevail for those who have put their trust in You.  Help us to live proclaiming and accepting them, as your gift for us every day.  Amen.

Por medio de estas cosas nos ha dado preciosas y grandísimas promesas.

2da Pedro 1: 4

            Algunos creyentes acostumbran a tomar versículos de un promesario, para mantenerse así recordando una promesa de Dios en cada día. El tradicional himno “Todas las promesas del Señor Jesús”, nos recuerda que dichas promesas son “grandes” y “fieles” y que nos han sido dadas para que confiemos en ellas por siempre.

            Al buscar las promesas de un promesario no debemos pensar que Dios obra mágicamente, otorgándonos un texto bíblico complaciente, o queriendo buscar un necesario sentido a nues-tra situación coyuntural. Más bien debemos confiar en la dirección divina que, mediante sus promesas, fortalece nuestra fe. En tal espíritu, compartir la oración es un testimonio de confianza en esas fieles promesas de Dios.

            El testimonio de muchos hermanos es que Dios nos habla mediante esos textos, nos exhorta, anima, y a veces, por qué no, también reprende y amonesta. Experimentar ese “hablar” de Dios con nosotros, es una de las cosas preciosas de la comunión que se establece en nuestra vida devocional.

Oración: Señor, te damos gracias por tus promesas. Te damos gracias porque ellas prevalecen para quienes han puesto en Ti su confianza. Ayúdanos a vivir proclamándolas y aceptándolas, como tu regalo para nosotros cada día. Amén.

JOHN 19: 38-40

Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.

            Jesus, dying on the cross, became in solidarity with the crucified of all times, assuming the same suffering for freedom, not to remain nailed and ridiculed on the cross, his resurrection affirming that  there should be no more oppression that de-humanizes.  Jesus won over death in order to “free” his brothers and sisters; and this is the great task of the collaborators of the Kingdom: free others with love, compassion, justice while proclaiming the beatitudes.

            Asking God the Father to be placed at the side of Jesus to follow him is also to commit oneself to walking the way of the Church, that is the human being, and walking this way supposes collaborating with humanization of all life:  humanizing work, education, relationships, family and integral society. 

            Freeing the crucified ones is breaking the nets and chains that have made slaves of those like us, it is to help, giving life if it were necessary to free others, with the knowledge of the Truth.  And this process of conversion will free us from ourselves, from our selfish criteria, and it will help us to open the heart in order to free it of all that enslaves, achieving in God the needed renovation that allows us to be truly free. 

Prayer: Lord, teach us to break the chains of our life, and to break those of our neighbors.  Amen.

DESCLAVA A TUS HERMANOS

JUAN 19: 38-40

Y conoceréis la verdad, y la verdad os hará libres

Juan 8: 32

            Jesús, al morir en la cruz, se hace solidario con los crucificados de todos los tiempos, asume el mismo sufrir para liberar, no para quedar clavado y escarnecido en la cruz, su resurrección afirma que no debe haber más opresiones que deshumanicen. Jesús vence la muerte para “desclavar” a sus hermanos; y esta es la gran tarea de los colaboradores del Reino: desclavar a otros con el amor, la compasión y la justicia, al modo proclamado en las Bienaventuranzas.

            Pedir a Dios, el Padre, ser puestos al lado de Jesús para seguirle, es también comprometerse a recorrer el camino de la Iglesia, que es el del ser humano, y recorrer este camino supone colabo-rar con la humanización de toda vida: humanizar el trabajo, la educación, las relaciones, la familia, la sociedad íntegra.

            Desclavar a los crucificados es romper las redes y cadenas que hacen esclavos a los semejantes, es ayudar, entregar la vida si fuese necesario para liberar a otros, con el conocimiento de la Verdad. Y este proceso de conversión nos va a librar de nosotros mismos, de nuestros criterios egoístas, y nos ayudará a abrir el corazón para liberarlo de todo lo que esclaviza, a lograr en Dios la necesaria renovación que nos permita ser verdaderamente libres.

Oración: Señor, enséñanos a desatar las cadenas de nuestra vida, y a desatar las de nuestros semejantes. Amén.

CONFESSION OF SINS

1 JOHN 1: 6-10

If we claim, “We don’t have any sin,” we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.   

1 John 1:8 (CEB)

            We Presbyterians have certain problems with handling themes related to sin: it is true that in our liturgies we do not neglect time for confession, but in general, it is something more routine and stereotyped.  Do we really feel like we are sinners? 

            The catholic practice links confession with presenting oneself before a priest, in order to rule and sentence the absolution, through specified requirements. Within our reformed tradition, the practice follows the necessity of recognizing human sin, always present, as an obstacle to our communion with one another and with God. 

            Reviewing a book of prayers by Walter Brueggemann, I was struck that this scholar in the Old Testament mentioned in some of the prayers the sad reality of our constant distorting of the Biblical God; he affirmed that we go around making interpretations that accommodate us, we misrepresent the divine order such as it is presented.  Our nature continues ignoring our sinfulness in this intent to be “as gods”. 

Prayer: Holy God, do not let us fall into the temptation to feel comfortable with our own versions of how to fulfill your will.  Give us humble hearts to confess our faults and to obey you.  Through Jesus Christ, Amen.

Si afirmamos que no tenemos pecado, nos engañamos a nosotros mismos y no tenemos la verdad

1ra Juan 1:8

            Nosotros los presbiterianos tenemos cierto problema para tratar los temas relacionados con el pecado, cierto es que en nuestras liturgias no falta un tiempo para la confesión, pero por lo general es algo más bien rutinario y estereotipado. ¿Cuán realmente nos sentimos pecadores?

            La práctica católica vincula la confesión a presentarse ante un sacerdote, para que este dictamine y sentencie la absolución, con determinados requisitos por medio. Dentro de nuestra tradición reformada la práctica obedece a la necesidad de reconocimiento del pecado humano, siempre presente, como obstáculo para nuestra comunión unos con otros, y con Dios.

            Hojeando un libro de oraciones de Walter Brueggemann, me impactó que este especialista en Antiguo Testamento menciona en algunas de ellas la triste realidad de nuestro constante distorsionar al Dios bíblico; él afirma que vamos haciendo interpretaciones que nos acomoden, tergiversamos la orden divina tal como se nos presenta. Nuestra naturaleza sigue desconociendo nuestra pecaminosidad en ese intento de ser “como dioses”.

Oración: Dios santo, no nos dejes caer en la tentación de sentirnos cómodos con nuestras propias versiones de cómo cumplir tu voluntad. Danos corazones humildes para confesarte nuestras faltas y obedecerte. Por Jesucristo. Amén.

Therefore, I relent and find comfort in dust and ashes.

Job 42.6 (CEB)

            From the beginning, the human being has had contact with ashes, when fire was first discovered in an accidental way, and now with a large number of industrial contaminants.  This happens also in the home environment when ashes can fall outside of ashtrays, disgusting those who are in charge of cleaning the home. 

            Ashes have been symbolically associated with death and expiration and later with humility and penance.  Christians remember our condition as sinners with ashes and announce that this life is only a preparation for the future, a life eternal. 

            Meanwhile, what do we do in the here and now?  We can accept that we are combustible earth, useless and expendable material, or we can ask the great potter to make us anew, to completely remake us, including after we lose our way, even when our own mistakes have also affected others.

            May the ashes be converted for all of us into a reminder that other opportunities exist, perpetuating the moment that we were made from dust, and thus giving a fresh start to a new cycle of life. 

Prayer: God, convert us into premium reusable material.  Not in the ashes of the ashtray, not in the factories, not in the pile of ashes in the tomb.  But in a handful of useful earth in the hands of the great Architect.  Amen.

POLVO INÚTIL O MATERIAL RECICLABLE

Por tanto, me aborrezco, y me arrepiento en polvo y ceniza.

Job 42.6

            Desde siempre, el ser humano ha tenido contacto con la ceniza, primero cuando de manera accidental descubrió el fuego, y ahora con las grandes industrias contaminantes. Aquella pasa también por el ámbito doméstico, cuando se deja caer fuera de los ceniceros, disgustando a quienes tienen a cargo la limpieza del hogar.

            La ceniza se ha asociado simbólicamente con la muerte y lo caduco y más tarde con la humildad y la penitencia. Los cristianos recordamos con las cenizas, nuestra condición de pecadores, y anuncia, que esta vida es solo una preparación para el futuro, en la vida eterna.

            ¿Mientras tanto qué hacemos en el aquí y el ahora? Podemos aceptar ser tierra desechable, materia inútil y prescindible, o pedir al gran alfarero que nos haga de nuevo, que nos rehaga del todo, incluso después de perder el camino, aunque con nuestros propios errores hayamos afectado también a los demás.

            Que la ceniza se convierta para todas y todos en un recordatorio de que existe otra oportunidad, que perpetúe el momento en que del polvo fuimos hechos, y así dar comienzo a un nuevo ciclo de vida.

Oración: Dios, conviértenos en materia prima reutilizable. No en las cenizas del cenicero, ni la de las fábricas, ni en el montoncito de ceniza de la tumba. Sino en un puñado de tierra útil en las manos del gran Artífice. Amén.

BEING DISCIPLES

JOHN 8: 29-31

This is how everyone will know that you are my disciples when you love each other.

            Perhaps most of us have been able to be a participant in our congregation in the marvelous exchange experiences with sisters and brothers who visit us from other countries. In exchanges like these, one learns a lot about the life of other churches outside of our context and of their faith challenges that are basically not so dissimilar from ours.  

            Some people are deprived of contact with others due to the questions around the concern of the language and other cultural and ecclesial differences.  But if we bypass this logical fear, it has been proven that the attempt is very enriching.

            If they asked me what is the most meaningful of these experiences, I can respond without hesitation: the love that is demonstrated by the members of each delegation that visits us.  Acceptance and caring that is shown in a reciprocal and mutual manner can only be explained by the fact that, in reality, in Christ we are a family; we are not strangers who pass by each other, but we can behave toward one another like true brothers and sisters. 

            To be a disciple implies remaining in the Word that has been proclaimed to us, but, much more, obeying the command to love one another as Christ loved us.  

Prayer: God of goodness and mercy, pour out your grace on your Church so that it will be an ongoing channel of love.  Amen.

En esto conocerán todos que sois mis discípulos, si tenéis amor los unos por los otros

            Tal vez la mayoría de nosotros ha podido ser partícipe en nuestras congregaciones, de la maravillosa experiencia de intercambiar con hermanas y hermanos que nos visitan de otros países, en tales intercambios uno aprende muchísimo de la vida de otras iglesias fuera de nuestro contexto y de sus retos de fe, que en esencia no son tan disímiles a los nuestros.

            Algunas personas se privan del contacto por las interrogantes acerca de la cuestión del idioma y otras diferencias de cultura y propiamente eclesiales. Pero si vencemos ese temor lógico, se comprueba que el intento es muy enriquecedor.

            Si me preguntaran lo más impactante de estas experiencias puedo responder sin titubear: -el amor que nos demuestran los miembros de cada delegación que visita. La aceptación y el cariño que se demuestran de manera recíproca y mutua solo se explica por el hecho de que, en realidad, en Cristo somos una familia; no somos extranjeros de paso, sino que podemos comportarnos como verdaderos hermanos y hermanas.

            Ser discípulo implica permanecer en la Palabra que se nos ha proclamado, pero, mucho más, obedecer en el mandato de amarnos unos a otros como Cristo nos amó.

Oración: Dios de bondad y misericordia, inunda con tu gracia a tu iglesia para que sea canal perenne de amor. Amén.

STANDING ON A ROCK

PSALM 31:1-3

…be a rock that protects me; be a strong fortress that saves me!

            Have you ever tried to cross a stream by jumping from rock to rock?  

            If the rocks are found near one another and seem sufficiently large to support our feet, we experience a feeling of security, we can advance slowly, maintaining our balance with each jump before taking the next one. 

            But on some occasions the next rock seems to be a little far from our balance and doubt or fear paralyzes us, keeping us from moving, and there is no progress or satisfaction.  

            The true challenge is found in continuing forward, a true test of faith when the feet are in the air, unsupported.  But with the intuition that we will succeed, with the bravery of leaving behind the rigidity or the fear, we can throw ourselves forward and embrace a new vision beyond our uncertainties. 

I compare this with having trust in God, yet with feet in the air, off the rock, we can notice God’s sure presence, as strength that saves us. 

Prayer:  Allow us, Lord, to feel you at each instant, and to make you our strong rock.  Amen.

¡Sé tú mi roca fuerte y la fortaleza para salvarme!

            ¿Han tratado alguna vez de cruzar un riachuelo saltando de roca en roca?

            Mientras las piedras se hallan cerca una de la otra y parecen lo suficientemente grandes como para apoyar nuestros pies, experimentamos un sentido de seguridad, vamos avanzando len-tamente, guardando el equilibrio en cada salto antes de dar el próximo.

            Pero en algunas ocasiones la roca siguiente parece estar un poco lejos de nuestro alance, y la duda o el temor nos paralizan, detenemos el movimiento, no hay progreso ni satisfacción.

            El verdadero desafío se halla en seguir adelante, es una verdadera prueba de fe el tener los pies en el vacío, sin apoyo. Pero con la intuición de que lo lograremos, con el valor de dejar atrás la rigidez o el temor, podremos lanzarnos y abrazar una nueva visión más allá de nuestras incertidumbres.

            Esto es lo que comparo con confiar en Dios, aún con los pies en el aire, fuera de la roca, podemos percatarnos de su presencia segura, como fortaleza que nos salva.

Oración: Permítenos, Señor, sentirte a cada instante, y hacer de Ti nuestra Roca fuerte. Amén.

YOU WERE CALLED TO FREEDOM

GALATIANS 5:1-13

For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command,

“Love your neighbor as yourself.”  (MIV)

Galatians 5:14

In the factory, at school, in the office, in the hospital, in the prison, in the city or country, in the cafeteria or walking, in whatever place or condition, we are always free to love our God.

           

We’re incapable of establishing a perfect order for human life in this world, but we’re convinced that things can be improved. We are aware that what we now have can be transformed. No lifestyle can be considered Christian if it’s indifferent to other people’s suffering.

In the victims of war and exploitation, in the hungry children, in the prostitute who seeks to be acknowledged as a person, in the youth craving knowledge, in all of these we find Jesus Christ. And in those who advocate for minority rights, there we find ambassadors of reconciliation in our times. Whether we are rich or poor, it’s in solidarity with the disinherited that we acquire direction and purpose, and we discover the wonderful truth of the promise “that he who loses his life for Christ’s sake will find it.”

God made us to live in a fraternal relationship with everyone.

  

Prayer:  Lord, we pray for all those who are deprived of freedom in any aspect of life. Amen.

            En la fábrica, en la escuela, en la oficina, en el hospital, en la prisión, en la ciudad o en la agricultura, en la cafetería o en el camino, en cualquier lugar, en cualquier condición, siempre estamos en libertad para amar a nuestro Dios.

            Somos incapaces de establecer un orden perfecto para la vida humana en este mundo, pero estamos convencidos de que las cosas pueden ser mejoradas. Tenemos conciencia de que lo que ahora tenemos puede ser transformado. Ningún estilo de vida puede ser cristiano si es indiferente a los sufrimientos de otras personas. En las víctimas de las guerras y la explotación, en los niños hambrientos, en la prostituta que busca ser representada como persona, en el joven sediento de conocimientos; en todos ellos encontramos a Jesucristo. Y en aquellos que abogan por los derechos de las minorías, allí encontramos embajadores de la reconciliación en nuestro tiempo. Ya seamos ricos o pobres, es en solidaridad con los desheredados como nuestra experiencia adquiere dirección y propósito y descubrimos la verdad maravillosa de la promesa de que el que pierde su vida por causa de Cristo, la hallará.

            Dios nos ha establecido para vivir en una relación de hermandad con todos los hombres.

Oración: Señor, te pedimos por todos los hombres que están privados de su libertad en cualquier aspecto de la vida. Amén.

THE POURING OUT OF THE SPIRIT

JOEL 2:15-32

“Even now,” declares the Lord,

“return to me with all your heart,

with fasting, weeping, and mourning.”  (NIV)

Joel 2:12

Joel is one of the Old Testament prophets we least know. This prophecy by Joel is cited by Peter as one that was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost with the pouring out of the Holy Spirit upon that group of disciples in the upper room.    

What motivated the prophecy was a locust plague that had never happened before, and a drought that even paralyzed their worship. This situation makes the prophet feel compelled to deliver his message of repentance.  True repentance is the only escape from God’s judgment, by which a human being is truly disposed to receive God.

 The prophet calls for an assembly of the people for fasting and prayer in the temple. However, he recognizes that those expressions will have to be authentic. When they truly are, the divine promise is of forgiveness and restoration. God is a God “slow to anger and great in mercy,” as he revealed his name to Moses in the Sinai. And now the prophet reminds the nation of this.

Prayer:  Beloved Father, we thank you for your mercy, demonstrated by your constant forgiveness and by your extended hand to renew us. Make us your sincere followers to offer testimony of You in our communities. Amen.

EL DERRAMAMIENTO DEL ESPIRITU

Por eso vuélvanse ya al Señor de todo corazón, con ayunos, lágrimas y lamentos

Joel 2:12

            Joel es uno de los profetas del Antiguo Testamento de quien menos conocemos. Esta profecía de Joel es citada por Pedro como una profecía que se cumplió el día de Pentecostés con el derramamiento del Espíritu Santo sobre aquel grupo de discípulos en el Aposento Alto.

            Lo que motiva su profecía es una plaga de langostas que nunca antes la había habido y una sequía que llegó hasta a paralizar el culto. Esta situación hace que el profeta se sienta impelido a lanzar su mensaje de arrepentimiento. El único escape del juicio de Dios es un verdadero arrepentimiento, por medio del cual el ser humano esté en disposición real de recibir a Dios.         

            El profeta llama a una asamblea del pueblo para ayuno y oración en el templo. Sin embargo, él reconoce que esas expresiones han de ser auténticas; cuando lo son verdaderamente, la promesa divina es de perdón y restauración. Dios es un Dios “lento para la ira y grande en misericordia”, así reveló su Nombre a Moisés en el Sinaí, y ahora el profeta lo recuerda a la nación.

Oración: Padre amado, agradecemos tu misericordia, demos-trada en tu perdón constante y en tu mano extendida para renovarnos. Haznos sinceros seguidores tuyos para ofrecer testimonio de Ti alrededor nuestro. Amén.

I BELIEVE IN GOD THE FATHER

BECAUSE HE LOVES ME

MATTHEW 28:16-20

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid,

but gives us power, love and self-discipline. (NIV)

2 Timothy 1: 7

Nothing is outside the scope of God’s power. Christians believe in an all-powerful God and Father. Power and paternity go together. Love and power always function in conjunction in God. Love is strength.  

Today Jesus approaches you to say, “All authority in heaven and earth is given to me.” It’s not a boast of power, it’s an individual message that draws close to you. Jesus Christ is not a remote God, he draws near and speaks to you. He is one with the Father; he is one with you. Your present anguish and pain are not foreign to Jesus; he knows them, he feels them and says to you: “All authority is given us…”    

 God’s power works in you in the manner of eternal love; that is, not in the manner of fulminating power, which it also is. God can love you as you are, and me as I am, and that proves that God is Father/Mother. His great love always remains applied to our lives; he has power to regenerate and construct in us what sin degenerates and destroys. Eternal power is eternal love in function.   

Prayer:  Our Father, make us responsive to your presence and to your constant love. Amen.

Porque no nos ha dado Dios un espíritu de cobardía, sino de poder, de amor y de dominio propio

                        Nada queda fuera del ámbito del poder de Dios. Los cristianos creen en un Dios Todopoderoso y Padre. El poder y la paternidad van unidos. En Dios, amor y poder funcionan en conjunción siempre. Amor es fuerza.

                        Jesús se acerca hoy a ti para decirte: Toda potestad me es dada en el cielo y en la tierra. No es un alarde de fuerza, es un mensaje individual que te llega de cerca. Jesucristo no es un Dios lejano, se acerca y te habla. Él es uno con el Padre; Él es uno contigo. Tu angustia y dolor de hoy no son ajenos a Jesús: los conoce, los pulsa y te dice: Toda potestad nos es dada…

                        El poder de Dios obra en ti a la manera del amor eterno que es, no a la manera del poder fulminante que también es. Dios puede amarte como tú eres y también a mí como yo soy, y eso prueba que Dios es Padre/Madre. Su gran amor permanece siempre aplicado a nuestras vidas, tiene poder para regenerar y construir en nosotros lo que el pecado degenera y destruye. El poder eterno es amor eterno en funciones.

Oración: Padre nuestro, haznos sensibles a tu presencia y a tu amor constante. Amén.
