January 31, TO LEARN FROM THE FIG TREE MATTHEW 24:32-35

January 31, Friday
TO LEARN FROM THE FIG TREE
MATTHEW 24: 32-35
For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first
1 Thessalonians 4:16 (NIV)
Those who are called senior citizens will remember these verses from Jose A. Buesa:  “You will pass by my life, without knowing that you passed.”  And it is true that many times we are passing by different places without knowing that we are passing, and what is most worrisome, we pass by without knowing the feelings our path contains.
Of the fig tree we remember the bad words that do not bear fruit; but now the teacher calls us to notice the branches.  When her green leaves bloom in the spring, it is a sign that summer is coming.  Ours is a confessional Church, and in each liturgy we set aside a special time for the creed.  But many times I say to myself:  Do we know what we are confessing?  It is scary when we look at our life, and at what we are confessing.  Are there green branches that announce the heat of the summer? At times our confession limits us to repeat words without noticing what we are saying and the responsibility that these words entail for our life.  It would seem that we announce a drought.  It is time to return to the Word and to what the Word is saying to us; and to evaluate ourselves so that we see if our life is consistent with what we believe.  Hopefully we can give a lot of visible signs of accepting Jesus Christ as our Savior.
Prayer:  Our God, help us in this day to look for you, and to live according to your will.  Amen.

APRENDER DE LA HIGUERA
MATEO 24: 32-35

Thursday, January 30 TO BE PREPARED MATTHEW 24:43-44

January 30, Thursday
TO BE PREPARED
MATTHEW 24: 43-44
Remember therefore, what you have received and heard; obey it and repent.  But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you..
Revelation 3:3 (NIV)
To be a guard is nothing nice, at times it becomes somewhat boring; but at the same time, it is a great responsibility, always there is a little voice that tells you to keep up the guard—and if something happens?
Every morning I hear from my house the students of a primary school when they begin to repeat the motto “Always ready”.  What does this phrase mean?  I suppose that it is to always be prepared.  Jesus exhorts us to be prepared.  Prepared for what?  The sentence appears in the context of the announcement of the coming of the Son of Man and faithfulness in service.  And it is precisely the call of Jesus to the disciples with the announcement of his coming, more than something frightening, is the call to live a life of responsibility.  Responsibility for myself and also for others.  Responsibility towards us goes through the responsibility for our health and for our spiritual life.  We are a unity, although our life has different dimensions.  What is certain is that we have to be prepared for all.
Prayer:  Good God, in this day I ask myself: how should I be better prepared?  Amen.

ESTAR PREPARADOS
MATEO 24: 43-44

Wednesday, January 29 THE MIRACLE SHARED PSALM 37:3-6

January 29, Wednesday
THE MIRACLE SHARED
PSALM 37:3-6
Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
Psalm 37:3(NIV)
Aladdin is a character in the well-known work “A Thousand and One Nights”.  The story tells that the protagonist discovers a lamp which, with the help of a genie, will give him the capacity to grant the most incredible wishes.
But our world does not pose the challenge of “A Thousand and One Nights,” if not in thousands of years.  Often have we felt the temptation to establish our relationships with God at the level of Aladdin, the genie and the marvelous lamp.  We pray, and we leave it to God to do the miracle.
Psalm 37 has a combination of ideas that at times we don’t understand:  “…hope in the Lord and do good.  In general, we stay with the first part of verse 3 and we relegate the rest to the background.  But the status of these invitations that appear in the Biblical text is the same.  One cannot trust in the help of the Lord if we are not capable of doing good, or at least doing our part.
Let’s not forget that we are not Aladdin, neither is God a genie in a marvelous lamp.  The miracle is shared.
Prayer:  Lord, allow us to be coparticipants in your project of full life.  Amen.

EL MILAGRO COMPARTIDO
SALMO 37:3-6
