Con el tiempo…

Aprendes  la sutil diferencia que hay entre  tomar

CHRIST AND THE END OF THE QUARTER

EPHESIANS 5:1:20

… always giving thanks to God the Father for everything,

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

This meditation brings to an end the quarter of April, May, and June of 2019.

We must recognize that there are times when it is hard to raise our voice and give thanks. It is not always a matter of personal misfortune. We can be very moved by the injustices in society around us, poverty, disasters. Our “whys?” can become thorns.

I think I do not have a totally satisfactory explanation. Faith is sometimes exposed to great tests. We feel that God is hiding sometimes as if behind masks. It’s a fact that even Jesus Christ (human and divine) had to suffer. Paul recommends that at these times we seek refuge in the name of Jesus, which literally means “save us.” In other words, the name itself is a prayer of praise and petition. But many do not use the name of Jesus in the proper way; they use the name for their own enrichment, taking the name of the Lord in vain.

We should use his name more humbly, with more respect, more feeling of gratitude; this name before which the powers of the universe kneel in recognition of the fact that He is the Lord.

Prayer: Father and Lord, at the end of this quarter may we be more conscious of our need for you and that you are the center of our lives. Amen.

CRISTO Y EL FINAL DEL TRIMESTRE

… y den siempre gracias por todo al Dios y Padre,

Con esta meditación cerramos este trimestre abril, mayo, junio del año 2019.

Debemos  reconocer que hay momentos, cuando resulta  difícil elevar la voz y dar gracias. No siempre  se trata de una desgracia sufrida en forma personal. Podemos estar muy afectados por las injusticias en la sociedad en nuestro alrededor, la pobreza, catástrofes. Nuestros “¿por qués?” se pueden convertir en espinas.

Creo que no tengo una explicación totalmente esclarecedora. La fe está expuesta a veces a grandes pruebas. Sentimos como si Dios se escondiera en algunas oportunidades como detrás de máscaras. Es un hecho que hasta Jesucristo (humano y divino) tuvo que sufrir. La recomendación de Pablo para estos momentos es refugiarse en el nombre de Jesús, que literalmente significa: “salvación, rescate”. Es decir, el mismo nombre es una oración, tanto de alabanza como de  súplica. Pero muchos no usan el nombre de Jesús con la intención debida; toman el nombre de Jesús como una fórmula para su propio enriquecimiento, toman el nombre de Dios en vano.

Deberíamos usar su nombre con más humildad, con más respeto, con más sentido de gratitud;  este nombre por el cual las potestades en el universo se  doblan reconociendo: Él es el Señor.

Oración: Padre y Señor, que al finalizar el trimestre podamos ser más conscientes de la necesidad que tenemos de ti y de que  tú eres el centro de nuestras vidas. Amén.

RECEIVING THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT

1 SAMUEL 15:16-23

Samuel said: “Although you were once small in your own eyes,

did you not become head of the tribes of Israel?

The Lord anointed you king over Israel.

1 Samuel 15:17 (NIV)

Saul had been elected king of the people of Israel in the period of their battles against the Philistines. Anointed by Samuel, who announced him and told him the Word of God, he received power from the Holy Spirit, which made him prophesy and become a new person. Centuries later, at Pentecost, when Jesus’ disciples were praying together, a peal of thunder rent the sky, dominating the scene, and the disciples began to speak in tongues and people saw they were changed. It was the arrival of the Holy Spirit of God, who came to fulfill Jesus’ promise.

It was two manifestations of the same fact in different periods, that reveal the magnitude of the Holy Spirit’s power, that when working on individuals, profoundly changes their lives to be holy.

At the present time the Holy Spirit also is revealed to all human beings. It is a transforming force that changes people for the better and prompts them to declare the eternal truths of God’s Word and to act accordingly. Let us ask God to fill us with the Holy Spirit’s power.

Prayer: Our God, may the power of your Holy Spirit fill our lives and change them, so that we become your witnesses and serve you better every day. Amen.

RECIBIENDO EL PODER DEL ESPÍRITU

Y dijo Samuel: Aunque eras pequeño en tus propios ojos,

Jehová te ha ungido por rey sobre Israel?

1 Samuel 15:17

Saúl había sido elegido rey del pueblo de Israel en su época de luchas contra los filisteos. Ungido por Samuel, quien le anunció y le declaró la Palabra de Dios, recibió el poder del Espíritu Santo, que le hizo profetizar y convertirse en otro hombre. Siglos después, el día de Pentecostés, estando reunidos en oración los discípulos de Jesús, un estruendo que repentinamente vino del cielo, dominó la situación y aquellas personas comenzaron a hablar en lenguas extrañas y la gente los conoció como poseídos de alguna transformación. Fue la llegada del Espíritu Santo de Dios, que vino a cumplir su promesa de Jesús.

Son dos situaciones del mismo hecho en diferentes épocas, pero que revelan la magnitud del poder del Espíritu Santo, que cuando obra en los individuos, provoca en ellos una transformación absoluta en sus vidas, en sentido hacia lo divino.

Actualmente el Espíritu Santo se revela también a todos los seres humanos. Es una fuerza transformadora que los transforma favorablemente y los impulsa a declarar las verdades eternas de la Palabra de Dios y a actuar en el mismo sentido de ellas. Clamemos a Dios para que nos llene del poder su Santo Espíritu.

Oración: Dios nuestro, permite que el poder de tu Santo Espíritu llene nuestras vidas y las transforme impulsándonos a testificar de ti y a servirte mejor cada día. Amén.

SANCTIFIED IN FAITHFULNESS

DEUTERONOMY 7:6-9

Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love

him and keep his commandments.

Deuteronomy 7:9 (NIV)

The catechism tells us that God is unchangeable in holiness. This is not mere doctrine. It’s the experience that everything has been put in the hands of a God who is both holy and faithful. His plans and purposes cannot have perhaps or maybes.

The text read today cannot be appreciated in a single moment. We may have a moment of truth in an agonizing instant in our daily living. But the full meaning of this exhortation from Scripture can only be appreciated when we have gone through years of sadness and happiness. Then let us recognize how many times we were able to see our God through his Word. Sometimes admonishing us, other times calling us blessed.

And how many times have we known then that the Lord our God is our faithful God, in the midst of his holiness, wanting to make happy anyone who has wanted to know him and love him!

Prayer: Thank you, good God, for the faithfulness of your Word, and the revelation in it of your holy purpose for us your sons and daughters. Amen.

SANTIFICADO EN SU FIDELIDAD

DEUTERONOMIO 7:6-9

Conoce,  pues, que Jehová tu Dios es Dios, Dios fiel, que guarda el pacto y la misericordia  a los que le aman

y guardan sus mandamientos, hasta mil generaciones

El Catecismo nos dice que Dios es inmutable en santidad. No es mera doctrina. Es la experiencia de todo aquel que se ha puesto en las manos de un Dios que por ser santo es fiel. Sus designios y propósitos no pueden tener quizás ni acasos.

No se puede constatar en un solo momento el texto leído hoy. Puede suceder que tengamos una prueba de verdad en un instante angustioso de nuestro diario vivir. Pero toda la profundidad de esta exhortación de las Escrituras las medimos cuando han pasado los años en medio de tristezas y alegrías. Recordemos entonces cuántas veces hubimos de reconocer a nuestro Dios a través de su Palabra. Unas veces reprendiéndonos, otras haciéndonos de sus bienaventurados.

¡Y cuántas veces supimos así que Él era nuestro Dios, Dios fiel, siempre en medio de su santidad, queriendo hacer feliz a todo aquel que ha querido conocerle y amarle!

Oración: Gracias  buen Dios, por la fidelidad de tu Palabra, por la revelación en ella de tus santos propósitos hacia nosotros tus hijos e hijas. Amén.

NUMBERS 14:1-12

Only do not rebel against the Lord,

And do not be afraid of the people of the land…Do not be afraid of them

One of our primary instincts is fear. Fear is innate and is an emotion that stops us and controls us in the case of danger, even imagined fear. Fear is manifest hiding behind the mask of timidity, pessimism, lies, hypocrisy, doubt; and all expressions of fear have a common element: a human being’s insecurity for what they lack and need.

The Christian should banish fear. He or she knows that God is with them and gives them strength for difficulties, counsel in pain, courage in pessimism and for speaking God’s truths, inspiration in those moments of creativity, and especially of love. His promise: I will never forsake you is so grand that it alone can banish our fear and help us trust him. Trusting in God means waiting for God patiently and with full certainty that his love extends to us to feel all his power.

Prayer: Eternal God, thank you for making us aware of your company that reassures us at all times in our lives. Amen.

DESECHANDO EL MIEDO

NÚMEROS 14:1-12

Por tanto, no seáis rebeldes contra Jehová,

ni temáis al pueblo de esta tierra...no los temáis

Números 14:9

Uno de los instintos primarios del individuo es el miedo. El miedo aparece en el ser humano desde los albores de su formación y constituye una emoción que lo detiene y lo sujeta ante el peligro, aunque éste exista sólo en su imaginación.  El miedo en todos los ciclos de su formación se manifiesta en las personas escondido bajo la máscara de la timidez, el pesimismo, la mentira, la hipocresía, la duda; y todas estas formas de expresión del miedo llevan dentro de ellas mismas un elemento fijo: la inseguridad del ser humano que sufre ante lo que le falta y lo que necesita.

El ser humano de Dios debe desechar el miedo. Sabe que puede gozar de su compañía y que ésta compañía  lo llena de fuerzas en las dificultades, de consuelo en el dolor, de ánimo en el pesimismo, de valor en la proclamación de sus verdades, de inspiración en los momentos de creación, y sobre todo de amor. Su promesa: No te dejaré, ni te desampararé; es tan grandiosa, que de por sí sola arranca de nosotros todo miedo y nos lleva a depositar en Él nuestra confianza. El confiar en Dios significa esperar en Él con paciencia y con la plena seguridad de que su amor nos alcanza, para revestirnos de toda su potencia.

Oración: Eterno Dios, gracias porque tenemos conciencia de que tu compañía nos asegura en todos los momentos de nuestras vidas. Amén.

He took one of the seedlings of the land and put it in fertile soil…

It sprouted and became a low, spreading vine…

Ezekiel 17:5-6 (NIV)

Marcial, the leading character of “Viaje a la semilla” (Trip to the Seed), by the Cuban author Alejo Carpentier, travels back from death to youth and infancy in a journey that ends in his mother’s womb. We do this every June 26 when we recall the humble beginnings of the Presbyterian Church in Cuba. Our trip to the seed includes a series of images, facts, and faces that over time represent our Cuban Presbyterian identity. What it means to be a Presbyterian in Cuba is not an open and shut matter, because Cuban Presbyterianism is being built daily in the responses to the challenges that life brings us, illuminated by the Word and the certain guide of the Holy Spirit.

That seed that was one day planted and watered by Evaristo Collazo, and which God enabled to grow, became –as the prophet said— a vine with many branches that buried their roots in the soil. This vine is the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Cuba, which at the age of 129 is still young and has not stopped working for our country, helping to nourish a faithful community of followers of Jesus Christ. We have watered and tended this lovely vine because we have done as God commanded, and we have grown since God has saved us and sustained us thus far.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for calling us to be part of your Church, your redeemed people that are working today for service and for reconciliation for a better Cuba. Amen.

VOLVIENDO A LOS ORÍGENES

1 PEDRO 2:4-10

Tomó una semilla, y fue a sembrarla en buena tierra…

La semilla creció, y se convirtió en una vid…

Ezequiel 17:5-6

Marcial, protagonista de “Viaje a la semilla”, obra del escritor cubano Alejo Carpentier, viaja en el tiempo desde la muerte a la juventud y la infancia en un recorrido que culmina en el vientre materno. Así hacemos cada 26 de junio, al evocar los humildes inicios de la Iglesia Presbiteriana en Cuba. Nuestro viaje a la semilla contempla una sucesión de imágenes, hechos y rostros a través de los que fluye en el tiempo nuestra identidad presbiteriana cubana. La cuestión de lo que significa ser presbiteriano en Cuba no se puede explicar de manera acabada o cerrada, porque ser presbiteriano cubano es algo que se va construyendo en el día a día, en las respuestas a los desafíos que la vida nos trae, iluminados por la Palabra y bajo la guía certera del Espíritu Santo.

Aquella semilla que un día plantó y regó el reverendo Evaristo Collazo, y que Dios hizo crecer, se convirtió –al decir del profeta— en una vid, con muchas ramas, y que hundió sus raíces en el suelo. Esa vid es nuestra actual Iglesia Presbiteriana-Reformada en Cuba, que con sus 129 años es todavía joven y no cesa de trabajar a favor de nuestro pueblo, y de ayudar a sostener en la fe a una fiel comunidad de seguidores de Jesucristo. Quienes hemos regado y cuidado esta hermosa planta hemos hecho lo que el Señor nos mandó hacer, pero hoy somos más presbiterianos porque es Dios quien nos ha salvado y nos ha sostenido hasta aquí.

Oración: Señor, gracias por llamarnos a ser parte de tu Iglesia, tu pueblo redimido que hoy se esfuerza en practicar el servicio y la reconciliación para una Cuba mejor. Amén.

who will go before us.…

In the morning I knocked on the door of a friend’s house. When nobody answered I knocked again several times. Eventually the door was opened. A three-year-old girl greeted me, and since I knew her I wanted to speak to her, but she would not let me. With her finger to her lips, she motioned me to remain silent and follow her on tiptoes. In the living room I tried to speak again, but she would not let me and in a very soft voice said: “God is here, according to my father, and last night brought me a little brother.”

One of the biggest problems the Jewish people had was the difficulty comprehending God’s omnipotence. Their concept of God was so limited that they could not understand the reality that God was with them even while he was talking to Moses on a mountain. The decision was unanimous: because of the leader’s delay and the inability of his substitute, they set about making a god (gods to go in front of them) who could guide them every day as Jehovah had done thus far.

Our limited vision of God necessarily leads us to idolatry. When God is not present, we need to make gods. We are idolatrous by nature and we can’t overcome the temptation to search for earrings to make gods. God is here, today and now. God doesn’t sleep, he’s with us, with and in his world. Like the girl at the beginning of this meditation, we trust that God is always nearby with wonderful blessings for our lives, and we eschew any idolatry.

Prayer: Lord, be real in our midst. Amen.

DIOS ESTA AQUÍ

que vayan delante de nosotros…

Por la mañana llamé a la puerta de la casa de una familia amiga. Al ver que nadie contestaba repetí la llamada varias veces. A fin la puerta se abrió. Apareció en el umbral la niña de la casa de unos tres años y como éramos amigos quise saludarla, pero me impidió emitir palabra. Con el índice sobre los labios, me indicó que guardara silencio y me hizo seguirla adelantándose ella de puntillas. Ya en la sala traté de hablar, pero me lo volvió a impedir y en voz muy baja me dijo: “Dios está aquí, dice mi papá que anoche me trajo un hermanito”.

Uno de los grandes problemas del pueblo judío fue el trabajo que le costó entender la omnipotencia de Dios. El concepto que ellos tenían de Dios era aun tan limitado, que no les permitía entender la realidad de que Dios estaba con ellos, aun cuando hablaba con Moisés en lo alto de un monte. La decisión fue unánime y frente a la tardanza del líder y la incapacidad de un sustituto, se dieron  a la manufacturación rápida de un dios (dioses que fueran delante de ellos) que fuera capaz de guiarlos diariamente como hasta ahora Jehová lo había hecho.

La falta de visión nuestra con relación a Dios nos lleva necesariamente a la idolatría. La ausencia de Dios plantea la necesidad de crear dioses. Somos idólatras por naturaleza y no podemos sustraernos de la tentación de buscar zarcillos para la construcción de dioses. Dios está aquí, hoy y ahora. Dios no duerme, está con nosotros, con y en su mundo. Tal y como la niña del principio de esta meditación confiemos en que Dios siempre está cerca con bendiciones maravillosas para nuestras vidas y desechemos toda idolatría.

Oración: Señor, hazte real en medio nuestro. Amén.

The fire must be kept burning on the altar continuously;

it must not go out.

Leviticus 6:13 (NIV)

What happened in the early days of the life of Israel, when the ceremonial laws of the temple had not yet been given?

Often groups of pilgrims came to the temple at night to worship God with their burnt offerings, and they found the altar fire out and the priest sleeping. And they had to go on their way without offering their sacrifice because the altar, instead of fire, contained only ashes. That is why the Lord ordered: The fire must be kept burning on the altar continuously; it must not go out. And for this to happen: the priest must put firewood on it every morning.

The altar is like your heart. How many other lives have approached you seeking light and heat, and found nothing but lack of passion or cold ashes? They didn’t find the fire of enthusiasm, dedication, and faith. That’s why the Lord ordered: The fire must be kept burning on the altar continuously; it must not go out. It shouldn’t be the product of sporadic enthusiasm, but an intimate, sustained experience. How can you achieve that? You’re the priest of your own spirit. Every morning stoke your heart with fuel so you have spiritual fire. This fuel is prayer, Bible reading, Christian meditation, good books, prayer partners...

Prayer: Lord, help us to lead a truly Christian life. Amen.

El fuego del altar debe estar encendido siempre.

No debe apagarse nunca

¿Qué sucedía en los antiguos tiempos de la vida de Israel, cuando aun no se habían dado las leyes ceremoniales del templo?

Muchas veces algunos grupos de peregrinos se acercaban de noche al templo para ofrecer culto a Dios por medio de sus ofrendas quemadas, y encontraban el altar apagado, y al sacerdote durmiendo. Y tenían que proseguir su camino sin poder ofrecer su sacrificio  porque el altar, en vez de fuego, tenía solamente cenizas. Por eso es que el Señor ordena: El fuego del altar debe estar encendido siempre. No debe apagarse nunca. Y para que sea así: el sacerdote deberá echarle leña todas las mañanas.

El altar es como tu corazón. ¡Cuántas veces otras vidas se acercan a ti buscando luz y calor, y no hallan más que tibiezas o cenizas frías! No arde en ti el fuego del entusiasmo, de la consagración y de la fe. Por eso el Señor ordena: El fuego del altar debe estar encendido siempre. No debe apagarse nunca. No debe ser producto de entusiasmos ocasionales, tiene que ser una íntima experiencia sostenida. ¿Cómo lograrlo? Tú eres el sacerdote de tu propio espíritu. Pon en tu corazón cada mañana el combustible apropiado para tener fuego espiritual. IN ORDER NOT TO SINK

PSALM 107:13-26

God quieted the storm to a whisper; the sea’s waves were hushed.

Let them thank the Lord for his faithful love

and his wondrous works for all people.

Psalm 107:29, 31 (CEB)

Water is the medium where a boat normally navigates; but if the water penetrates the boat and fills it up, the boat will sink.  In the same way, if the believer allows the world to enter him, if the mundane floods his heart, he will suffer a sinking of his spiritual life.  The praying believer keeps his heart in submission to the One he believes in, so that he or she remains in peace and security.

Everyone knows that it is impossible to live without water.  But also, everyone knows that if someone lasts a long time submerged in water, he will lose his life, because he will suffocate.  Water is indispensable for our bodies, but no one wants to drown.  In the same way, the physical world is necessary, and it is difficult to live without the things of the world.  God created the world so that the human being can live in it with responsibility, but nevertheless, it is not necessary to drown oneself in it. Those who abandon prayer, the breath of the soul, will drown.

A sailboat cannot move if the sail is not unfurled. However, the power of the wind does not diminish whether the sail is furled or not.  Faith is the sail that the believer is invited to put out in order to receive the wind of God’s grace.

 

Prayer:  Oh God, help us to know when the things that we need cause damage by taking them to excess. Allow us to know the limits.  Amen.

SALMO 107:13-26

El Señor cambia la tempestad en sosiego, y se apaciguan

sus ondas. Alaben la misericordia del Señor y sus maravillas

para con los hijos de los hombres

Salmo 107:29 y 31

Es el agua el medio donde navega normalmente un barco; pero si ella penetra en él hasta llenarlo, el barco naufragará. De la misma forma, si el creyente permite que el mundo entre en él, si lo mundano inunda su corazón, sufrirá el naufragio de su vida espiritual. El creyente de oración guarda su corazón en sumisión a Aquel que lo creó, de modo que permanezca en paz y seguridad.

Cada uno sabe que es imposible vivir sin agua. Pero también sabe que si alguien permanece mucho tiempo sumergido en el agua pierde la vida, porque muere asfixiado. Ella es indispensable para nuestro cuerpo, pero nadie desea morir ahogado. De igual modo, es preciso servirse del mundo físico y de las cosas del mundo, porque es difícil vivir sin ellas. Dios creó el mundo para que el ser humano viva en él con responsabilidad; sin embargo, no es necesario ahogarse en él. Los que abandonan la oración, la respiración del alma, mueren asfixiados.

Un barco de vela no puede avanzar si la vela no está desplegada. No obstante, el poder del viento no disminuye por ello. La fe es la vela que el creyente está invitado a tender para recibir el viento de la gracia de Dios.

Oración: Oh Dios, ayúdanos a reconocer cuándo las cosas que necesitamos nos hacen daño por tomarlas en exageración.  Permítenos conocer el límite. Amén.
