Saturday, January 31 FROM PERPETRATOR TO VICTIM NUMBERS 12:1-16

Saturday, January 31
FROM PERPETRATOR TO VICTIM
NUMBERS 12:1-16

“The LORD replied to Moses, ‘If her father had spit in her face, would she not have been in disgrace for seven days? Confine her outside the camp for seven days; after that she can be brought back.’”
Numbers 12:14
It almost always happens that in order to be in solidarity with someone who is suffering or has unjustly suffered, we have to have personally experienced it; and many times, even when we think that our purpose in life includes being with or walking alongside men and women who are discriminated against or excluded for gender, racial or generational reasons, we too can be guilty of injustice. Something very similar happened to Marion, as soon as she and Aaron pointed to Moses and criticized him for having fallen in love with an Ethiopian woman. And as every action in our lives has consequences, for Marion it did as well.  It is she who is then excluded according to the text, and not Aaron, solely for being a woman in that patriarchal society. Injustices always unleash greater injustices and tomorrow we may all be the victims.  Let us try to keep as one of our priorities the defense of justice above any prejudice, remembering that at each moment God gives us the opportunity to spiritually restore and renew ourselves in order to undo all unjust actions and to restore righteousness.

Prayer: Lord, give me the strength to not remain silent and to combat all acts of injustice that take place around me. Amen.

Friday, January 30 DO NOT REPAY ANYONE EVIL FOR EVIL 2 KINGS 6:8-23

Friday, January 30
DO NOT REPAY ANYONE EVIL FOR EVIL
2 KINGS 6:8-23
“Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody.”

Romans 12:17
Yesterday’s biblical passage also makes us think about certain attitudes that tempt us in our daily behavior. Elisha, miraculously, guides his pursuers into the hands of the king of Israel, who seeks his advice about what to do with them.  Instead of taking the “logical” advantage in favor of vengeance, he suggests that the king allow them to live, and the prisoners are treated as guests.  This gesture of good faith brought about the end of the war between Syria and Israel.

This lovely story which concludes with peace shows us that bloodshed and vengeance only bring further conflicts. On the other hand, the non-violent mediation of conflicts opens infinite roads to reconciliation and forgiveness.  It might be good for us today to think of a possible solution for those conflicts that have alienated us from certain people.  This possible solution would draw us closer to God, who through Jesus gave us the example to attain total harmony between human beings and all of God’s creation.

In the story we have read, the prisoners are nourished at a magnificent banquet and their freedom is restored.  Today God invites us to include ourselves in the great banquet of his kingdom, whose fruit is also freedom: a freedom with conscience, a freedom that always goes hand in hand with righteousness and peace.

Prayer: Lord, help us to not repay evil with evil, but rather may your love prevail within us and towards others. Amen.

No pagues a nadie mal con mal
2 Reyes 6:8-23
“No paguemos a nadie mal por mal. Procuremos

Thursday, January 29 WE ARE A MULTITUDE 2 KINGS 6:8-23

Thursday, January 29
WE ARE a multitude
2 kings 6:8-23
“Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
2 Kings 6:16
This exemplary passage has many teachings but today I would like to point out the capacity that the prophet Elisha had to discover the greatest strength in God and not in human armies.  In the face of imminent threat from the Syrians, the prophet invokes God’s protection and He responds with a surprising cavalry of fire that imposes his power in that difficult moment.

It is often difficult for us to trust in God when circumstances do not seem to allow any opportunity to go on. And it also often occurs to us, as it did to Elisha, to only take into account our own courage and also that of the enemies that surround us, and this limited perspective is reduced to our own force and the difficulties that arise.  However, Elisha’s words are more valid today than ever: we are not alone.

The fear that paralyzes us and keeps us from continuing to uphold the responsibilities that God has given us should be rejected, because it does nothing more than limit and crush and repress us. God wants for us to move forward in the face of life’s confrontations, with trust and faith in Him.  With God, even though we are seemingly alone, we are a multitude.

Prayer: God of goodness, grant that today I may trust in you in such a way that the challenges I face will not matter if you are by my side.  Help me to trust in the multitude of angels that camp at my side. Be with me, Lord; I am in your hands. Amen.

Somos multitud
2 Reyes 6:8-23

Wednesday, January 28 A RESPONSE TO GOD’S QUESTION ISAIAH 6:1-10

Wednesday, January 28
A RESPONSE TO GOD’S QUESTION
ISAIAH 6:1-10

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’”
Isaiah 6:8

The Bible is filled with dialogues between God and humans. And in those dialogues God always takes the initiative to ask questions.

In the beginning God asked: Where are you?  And the humans fled from the presence of their Creator. Later God asked: Where is your brother?  This is the question that has been evaded by humanity in order to avoid responsibility. Another day, before a burning bush, God said to a man: “Moses, Moses” but he did not want to listen to the calling to the colossal task of liberating his people. A young man heard God’s question “Whom shall I send and who will go for us?” but his immediate and decisive reply was: “Send me.”

On the dusty road journeyed by another man from Jerusalem to Damascus, he heard the words of his God and he responded: “Lord, what do you want me to do?”

In the history of mankind this is the question that God asks to have answered.  We are challenged to be obedient instruments of service and a blessing to the world. God continues to ask each one of us “Who will go?” And God continues to wait for a decisive reply.  Will “Send me” be your response?

Prayer: Lord, help us to achieve the mission with which you have entrusted us. Amen.

Entonces respondí yo: Heme aquí, envíame a mí”

Tuesday, January 27 THE DANGEROUS WORLD OF ENTERTAINMENT LUKE 4: 16-21

Tuesday, January 27
THE DANGEROUS WORLD OF ENTERTAINMENT
LUKE 4: 16-21
“See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world, rather than on Christ.”

Colossians 2:8
I am concerned about the way in which, in some countries, certain televised programs are considered: the world of entertainment.

The word to entertain, in addition to meaning to provide amusement and recreation, has a very dangerous significance:  to distract someone from doing something.  We should be responsible with what we consume on a daily basis, and I am not talking about food, of course; I am talking about what we listen to and watch every day.  Are we falling into that world that distracts us by keeping us from what is truly most important: the kingdom of God?

Jesus explains in this biblical text why he has come to the world:  to proclaim righteousness, to liberate, to give vision, to announce a favorable time for the neediest and everything in the name of the Lord.

We are responsible for the education of our sons and daughters and ought to be vigilant so that nothing distracts them from doing what is right and necessary.

Amusement is important in our lives, but let us be careful with what “entertains” our sons and daughters.  Let us sit by their side in front of any series, video, or show, and allow ourselves to ask, to question and to guide them without hindrance. In the end they will be able to reach their own conclusions with respect to the world of entertainment.

Prayer: Our loving God, we ask you to give us the wisdom to discern our mission and to be able to educate our sons and daughters in your statutes and not in the statutes that do not dignify the life on earth that you offer us.

EL PELIGROSO MUNDO DEL ENTRETENIMIENTO
LUCAS 4: 16-21

Monday, January 26 ONLY LOVE JOHN 3: 16-21

Monday, January 26
ONLY LOVE
JOHN 3: 16-21
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men…”
Colossians 3:23
I would like to begin this meditation by sharing a few verses of a song that I like very much, by the Cuban singer Silvio Rodríguez:
You need to love; in your hands lies the clay.
You need to love; with craziness or otherwise,
Don’t take it on, for it will be in vain.
Love alone lights up what endures
Love alone creates a miracle from the clay.

This song invites us to put love into everything we do. This is what the biblical text means when we are exhorted to work for God and not for human beings.  Let us rid ourselves of all apathy and frigidity in our relationships and in our daily tasks.  If God loved us first and showed us this love through His Son Jesus Christ, let us learn to share this love in our daily deeds.

Let us put faith and heart into everything that God gives us to do.  This way alone will the clay take shape in our hands.

Prayer: Thank you, God of history, for your eternal mercy; thank you for pouring your love over us and thank you that we are like that clay that turns into a miracle in your hands. Amen.

SOLO EL AMOR
JUAN 3: 16-21

Sunday, January 25 GOD IN OUR PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE ECCLESIASTES 3: 1-15

Sunday, January 25
GOD IN OUR PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE
ECCLESIASTES 3: 1-15
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven…”
Ecclesiastes 3:11
I love looking at old photos. The thing is, we don’t always develop a harmonious relationship with our past.  Either we recall it with nostalgia, thinking about things we had that we no longer have, or feeling that “everything was better in the good old days.” Or we want to leave the past behind because we experienced things that are best forgotten.

When I look at old photos, a great satisfaction comes over me, because I sense that harmonious relationship with past experiences, enriching relationships, good times together with friends and family.  The memories are relived, not in order to eternalize them, but in order to fill myself with strength and to commit myself to my present and my future.  I invite you to meditate upon the importance of each moment in our lives:  the past laden with good and bad experiences from which we learned; the present with its challenges and possibilities; the future with its load of dreams and expectations.  And the most important thing: at every moment, acknowledge the way in which the Creator has accompanied you, is by your side now and will continue to be, because God is eternity.

Prayer: We ask you, oh God, to help us to not remain in the past, lamenting what we no longer have, and that we may confront our present with commitment and integrity and that we may project ourselves toward the future that you have promised us. Amen.

Me encanta ver fotos antiguas.

Saturday, January 24 THE VALUE OF VOLUNTEERISM 1 PETER 5:1-6

Saturday, January 24
THE VALUE OF VOLUNTEERISM
1 PETER 5:1-6

“Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.”
1Peter 5: 2

I heard someone say recently that volunteerism is in crisis. Some people first verify how much money they will receive for their services before they do any work.  It’s true that we need the money to feed ourselves, but the question is whether we make it the center of our motivations and efforts.

I understand that there are many people in the world who do their jobs daily without receiving adequate pay and that is not right, but I am referring to each one of us who has had the experience of lending a service without expecting any recompense other than the immense pleasure of helping people or serving another.

The service that one lends or the work that one does voluntarily is praiseworthy!

A volunteer’s prayer: Thank you, Lord, for having called me to serve as a volunteer, to give of my time, my energies and my love to those who suffer.  I am here, Lord, send me.  Make my mind and my heart willing to listen without prejudice, to serve regardless of the consequences. Amen.

EL VALOR DEL VOLUNTARIADO
1 PEDRO  5:1-6

Friday, January 23 FAREWELLS ARE SPECIAL GENESIS 31:20-55

Friday, January 23
FAREWELLS ARE SPECIAL
GENESIS 31:20-55
“Why did you run off secretly and deceive me? Why didn’t you tell me, so I could send you away with joy and singing to the music of tambourines and harps?”
Genesis 31:27
A friend of mine told me that each time her father had to go spend long periods of time in the hospital due to health issues, he would look at every corner of the house as if he were bidding it farewell.  She would always tell him:  Papi, stop saying goodbye; you’ll be home again soon.

I identified with this story because I am one who believes that farewells are important and necessary.  Whether between people or from the places we frequent, it is necessary to say goodbye.

Farewells may be perhaps difficult and painful, but they also constitute a ritual that allows us to be thankful to God for what he has given us.  This gratitude stems from the conviction that the person or place to which we bid farewell have made us happy, through the grace and love of God, for a period of time.

Farewells also allow us to render our appreciation, in a special way, for things that may appear less valuable on a daily basis.
Prayer: Grant, oh God, that in each farewell we may be able to acknowledge you as the author of every good thing that has happened in our lives. Let us not allow the opportunity to pass us by to bid farewell to the people who have left their footprints in our pathways!  Give us the strength to confront the nostalgia and sadness that comes after saying goodbye. Amen.

LO ESPECIAL DE LAS DESPEDIDAS
GÉNESIS 31:20-55
“¿Por qué te fugaste a escondidas? ¿Por qué me engañaste
y no me dijiste nada?

Thursday, January 22 THROUGHOUT THIS LIFE, LOVE SUFFICES MATTHEW 25: 31-46

Thursday, January 22
THROUGHOUT THIS LIFE, LOVE SUFFICES
MATTHEW 25: 31-46
“Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul…”
1 Peter 2:11
There is a story about a tourist in the past century who went to Cairo, Egypt, with the purpose of visiting a famous wise man.  The tourist was surprised when he saw that the wise man lived in a very simple little room filled with books.  The only pieces of furniture were a bed, a table and a bench.

“Where is your furniture?” asked the tourist. And the wise man quickly also asked: “And where is yours?”
“Mine?” asked the surprised tourist. “I’m only passing through!”
“So am I,” concluded the wise man.

Life on earth is only temporary.  However, many people live as if they were planning to stay here for eternity and they forget to be happy. Let us remember that:
God will not ask you for the square footage of your house; He will ask you how many people you welcomed to it.
God will not ask you what name brands are hanging in your closet; He will ask you how many people you helped to clothe.
God will not ask you how much money you made; He will ask you if you sold your conscience in order to make it.
God will not ask you for your job title; He will ask you if you did your work to the best of your ability.
God will not ask you how many friends you had; He will ask you how many people considered you their friend…

Prayer: Jesus, teacher of the way, help us to understand that only by learning to love, in the same way that you love us, will we be able to be happy in this world in which we are only “just passing through.” Amen.

DE PASO POR ESTA VIDA, EL AMOR BASTA
MATEO 25: 31-46
