GOD’S REIGN BELONGS TO THOSE WHO ARE SIMPLE

Luke 10: 21-24

At that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. . . .”

In a few words the Gospel explains how Jesus, with his word and his acts has delivered the ministry of the Reign, but only the simple and humble who fully trust God can understand it, since the wise and prudent do not accept his word because they consider themselves self-sufficient. The Fathers’ predisposition toward the poor and infants is a constant in the Old and New Testaments. The evangelists tell us that God’s Reign is for them.

Jesus’ affirmation that we have read is a challenge to those who think that they know everything, having everything and having everything at their disposal, without understanding that God thwarts the plans of the arrogant and is committed to the humble and the poor. God has mercy on the helpless and he frees them from violence and pressure because their lives are worth a lot to him,” as the psalmist says.

Prayer: Lord and God, thank you that in each morning I can sense you in the simplicity of life, in those details that enliven the soul. Amen.

Día de las Personas con Discapacidades

EL REINO DE DIOS ES PARA LOS SENCILLOS

Lucas 10: 21-24

… en aquella misma hora Jesús se regocijó en el Espíritu, y dijo: “Yo te alabo, oh Padre, Señor del cielo y de la tierra, porque escondiste estas cosas de los sabios y entendidos, y las has revelado a los niños. Sí, Padre, porque así te agradó.”

En pocas palabras el Evangelio explica cómo Jesús, con su palabra y sus obras nos ha entregado el misterio del Reino, pero sólo los sencillos y los humildes que confían plenamente en Dios, pueden comprenderlo, ya que los sabios y prudentes no aceptan su palabra porque se consideran autosuficientes. La predilección del Padre por los pobres y los pequeños es una constante en el Antiguo y en el Nuevo Testamento. Para ellos es el Reino de Dios, nos dicen los evangelistas.

La afirmación de Jesús que hemos leído es un reto para quienes creen saberlo todo, tenerlo todo y disponer de todo, sin comprender que Dios desbarata los planes de los arrogantes y se compromete con los humildes y con los pobres, tiene piedad del desvalido y "los libra de la violencia y presión porque sus vidas valen mucho para él", como dice el salmista.

Oración: Señor y Dios, gracias porque en cada mañana puedo sentirte en la sencillez de la vida, en esos detalles que animan el alma. Amén.

DO YOU HAVE FAITH?

Matthew 8: 5-11

The centurion answered, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only speak the word, and my servant will be healed.

How often have we questioned our faith? At what moments do we embrace it? These questions may help us understand a little the situation of sadness that the centurion was caused by his servant. This military man was a pagan. He was honest, consistent, reasonable. He was worried about the health of his friend and companion.

Deep down, he already had faith and God was working in him. His military training and discipline, although not exactly the best key to understanding Jesus’ style, proved to be a good starting point for salvation: “Lord, I am unworthy,” a good expression of humility and of trust. Jesus praised him for his attitude and faith; he recognized more faith in him than in many of the Israelites.  Jesus always takes advantage of the attitudes he finds in people, even if they are defective at the moment. From there he will help them mature and reach what he wants to convey to them in depth.

Prayer: Good God, I need you to help me to embrace my faith every day; sometimes I am weak, but I want to follow in your footsteps always. Amen.

¿Tienes Fe?

Mateo 8: 5-11.

... el capitán contestó: Señor, yo no merezco que entres en mi casa, solamente da la orden y mi criado quedará sano.

¿Cuántas veces nos hemos cuestionado la fe? ¿En qué momentos nos abrazamos a ella? Estas preguntas puede que nos ayude a entender un poquito la situación de tristeza que estaba provocando el centurión por su siervo. Este hombre militar era pagano. Era honrado, consecuente, razonable. Se preocupaba por la salud de su amigo y compañero.

En el fondo, ya tenía fe y Dios estaba actuando en él. Su formación militar y su disciplina, aunque no era exactamente la mejor clave para interpretar el estilo de Jesús, se demostró que era un buen punto de partida para la salvación: «Señor, no soy digno», buena expresión de humildad y de confianza. Jesús le alaba por su actitud y su fe: encontró en él más fe que en muchos de Israel. Jesús siempre aprovecha las disposiciones que encuentra en las personas, aunque de momento sean defectuosas. Desde ahí las ayudará a madurar y llegar a lo que él quiere transmitirles en profundidad.

Oración: Buen Dios, necesito que cada día me ayudes a abrazar mi fe en ti, soy débil a veces, pero en tus caminos quiero siempre estar. Amén.

Day of Struggle against AIDS

THE SIGNS WE EXPECT ABOUT THE END OF THE WORLD

Luke 21: 25-28, 34-36

Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.

How can we imagine the signs of the end of time? It is interesting to know the answers to this question because since we were children we were shown some scenes of how that moment will occur and, even so, we are not completely clear about it. Of course, we don’t have the exact answer either, but we do have some clues that the text itself illustrates to us through some unpleasant scenes. Evidently, they cause panic in the unbelievers; nevertheless among believers they can create a sense of security and indescribable joy, for it is time for us to hold our heads up with dignity and hope. Jesus did not give this whole speech to warn us of the signs we should expect, but rather to warn us against such apocalyptic beliefs (sign seeking), and not to misunderstand the “signs of the end.” Consequently, the Lord refuses to offer the “signs” that the Pharisees and many other believers today are looking for.

Prayer: Lord and God, allow me this morning to realize and be attentive to the signs and to your word. Amen.

Día de la lucha contra el SIDA

Las señales que esperamos del fin del mundo

Lucas 21: 25-28, 34-36

… estén ustedes preparados, orando en todo tiempo para que puedan escapar de todas estas cosas que van a suceder y para que puedan presentarse delante del Hijo del Hombre.

¿Cómo nos imaginamos las señales del fin de los tiempos? Es interesante conocer las respuestas a esta pregunta porque desde pequeño nos enseñan algunas escenas de cómo ocurrirá ese momento y, aun así, no la tenemos bien clara. Claro está, tampoco tenemos la respuesta exacta, pero sí algunas pistas que el propio texto nos ilustra a través de algunas escenas no muy agradables. Evidentemente, estas causan pánico en los incrédulos, sin embargo, en los creyentes deben provocar una sensación de seguridad y júbilo indescriptible, porque es el tiempo de erguir la cabeza con dignidad y esperanza.

Jesús no pronunció todo este discurso para prevenirnos de las señales que habríamos de esperar, sino más bien para advertirnos contra tales creencias apocalípticas (de buscar señales), y no malentender las “señales del fin”. En consecuencia, el Señor rehúsa ofrecer las “señales” que buscaban los fariseos y muchos otros creyentes hoy en día.

Oración: Señor y Dios, permite que en esta mañana pueda darme cuenta de la necesidad de estar atento a las señales y a tu palabra. Amén.
