Patience and the spirit of salvation

Luke 9:51-56

But He turned and rebuked them and said, “Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.”

Luke 9:55 (KJ21)

Jesus, the Lamb of God, does not come as an earthly conqueror who destroys his enemies. Christ’s patience in the face of rejection is a reflection of God’s sovereign grace, which calls all to repentance and offers salvation, even to those who initially reject him.

The disciples, in their misguided zeal, reflect the human tendency toward self-righteousness and vengeance, forgetting that true justice is God’s justice, which is manifested in mercy and patience. Jesus’ sermon teaches us that the Spirit who dwells in believers is a Spirit of love and salvation, not of destruction and condemnation.

This passage calls us to examine our hearts: How do we respond to rejection or opposition? Do we look to destroy or to save?

May this reflection inspire us to live in a spirit of reconciliation and to depend on God’s grace to persevere in faith, knowing that He is the one who works in our hearts to save.

Prayer: Lord, we need to learn more about You every day. Help us to depend more on your grace and to be instruments of reconciliation. Amen.

La paciencia y el espíritu de salvación.

Lucas 9:51-56

Pero Jesús se volvió y los reprendió. Y les dijo: «Ustedes no saben de qué espíritu son.

Jesús, el Cordero de Dios, no viene como un conquistador terrenal que destruye a sus enemigos. La paciencia de Cristo ante el rechazo es un reflejo de la gracia soberana de Dios, que llama a todos al arrepentimiento y ofrece salvación, incluso a los que inicialmente lo rechazan.

Los discípulos, en su celo mal encauzado, reflejan la tendencia humana a la justicia propia y a la venganza, olvidando que la verdadera justicia es la justicia de Dios, que se manifiesta en la misericordia y en la paciencia. El sermón de Jesús nos enseña que el Espíritu que mora en los creyentes es un Espíritu de amor y salvación, no de destrucción y condena.

Este pasaje nos llama a examinar nuestros corazones: ¿cómo respondemos al rechazo o a la oposición? ¿Buscamos destruir o salvar?

Que esta reflexión nos impulse a vivir con un espíritu de reconciliación y a depender de la gracia de Dios para perseverar en la fe, sabiendo que Él es quien obra en los corazones para salvar.

Oración: Señor, necesitamos aprender más de ti, cada día, ayúdanos a depender más de la tu gracia, y a ser instrumentos de reconciliación. Amén.

Let us confess to Him

John 1:47-51

Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things that that.”

John 1:50 (NIV)

Nathaniel, a man from Cana in Galilee, is presented as a true Israelite, without deceit, someone who is honest and sincere in his faith. At first, Nathaniel doubts when Phillip tells him about Jesus, thinking, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” However, his encounter with Jesus changes everything. Jesus reveals that he saw him under the fig tree before Phillip called him, leading him to a confession of faith: “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel”. The revelation here is twofold: Jesus knows Nathaniel’s heart and reveals himself as the promised Messiah, the Son of God.

Nathaniel is an example of how God can transform skepticism into genuine faith when we approach Him with sincerity and humility. His story encourages us to trust in Jesus, who knows every detail of our lives and invites us to see deeper spiritual realities.  

Prayer: Lord Jesus, we want to draw near to You with sincere and open hearts. Reveal Your truth and Your love in us, that we may be able to walk in the light of Your presence every day. Amen.

Confesémosle.

Juan 1:47-51

Jesús le dijo: -¿Lo crees porque te dije que te vi cuando estabas debajo de la higuera? ¡Vas a ver aún cosas más grandes que estas!

Natanael, un hombre de Caná de Galilea, es presentado como un verdadero israelita, sin engaño, alguien honesto y sincero en su fe. Al principio, Natanael duda cuando Felipe le habla de Jesús, pues piensa: "¿De Nazaret puede salir algo bueno?" Sin embargo, su encuentro con Jesús cambia todo. Jesús le revela que lo ha visto debajo de la higuera antes de que Felipe lo llamara, lo lleva a una confesión de fe: "Rabí, tú eres el Hijo de Dios; tú eres el Rey de Israel". La revelación aquí es doble: Jesús conoce el corazón de Natanael y se revela como el Mesías prometido, el Hijo de Dios.

Natanael es un ejemplo de cómo Dios puede transformar el escepticismo en fe genuina cuando nos acercamos con sinceridad y humildad. Su historia nos anima a confiar en Jesús, quien conoce cada detalle de nuestra vida y nos invita a ver realidades espirituales más profundas.

Oración: Señor Jesús, queremos acercarnos a Ti con corazones sinceros y abiertos. Revela en nosotros tu verdad y tu amor, que podamos caminar en la luz de tu presencia cada día. Amén.

Justice and mercy

Luke 16:19-31

Abraham said to them, “if they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.”

Luke 16:31(NIV)

The rich man, who lived in opulence without compassion, suffers torment after death, while Lazarus is comforted in the bosom of Abraham.

The parable teaches that decisions and attitudes in this life have lasting consequences, consequences that transcend us. The grace of God is not to be taken lightly; true faith is manifested in works of love and justice.

This text challenges us to live an active faith that reflects Christ’s love for all Creation, especially for the poor, the most needy, and those who continue to be marginalized. It calls us to preach with urgency the need for repentance, to share his message of justice, and to allow ourselves to be challenged and transformed by Jesus’ proposal.

Prayer: Lord, may we live each day committed to your Kingdom, doing good and sharing you with those around us so that together we may transform our reality. Amen.

Justicia y misericordia.

Lucas 16,19-31

Abraham le dijo: “Si no hacen caso a Moisés y a los Profetas, tampoco se convencerán aunque alguien se levante de entre los muertos”».

Lucas 16,31

El rico, que vivió en opulencia sin compasión, sufre tormento después de la muerte, mientras que Lázaro es consolado en el seno de Abraham.

La parábola enseña que las decisiones y actitudes en esta vida tienen consecuencias perdurables, consecuencias que nos trascienden. La gracia de Dios no es para ser tomada a la ligera; la fe verdadera se manifiesta en obras de amor y justicia.

Este texto nos desafía a vivir una fe activa, que refleje el amor de Cristo a toda la Creación, de manera muy especial hacia los pobres, los más necesitados, los que siguen siendo marginados, y a predicar con urgencia la necesidad de arrepentimiento, a compartir su mensaje de justicia, a de dejarnos interpelar y transformar por la propuesta de Jesús.

Oración: Señor, que podamos cada día vivir comprometidos con tu Reinado, haciendo lo bueno, compartiendo de ti a nuestro alrededor para transformar juntas y juntos nuestra realidad. Amén.
