THERE WAS NO DAY LIKE THAT

Joshua 10:1-14

and there was no day like that, neither before or after…(NIV)

How much time does a day last? The seven days of the creation is generally interpreted as seven periods of thousands or millions of years. The psalmist says, “A thousand years before your eyes are as the day before yesterday that has passed, and like one of the night watches.”   

Exceptional days are found in the Bible, like the time of the rain God brought during the flood, Moses’ time on Mount Sinai, the time given for the destruction of Nineveh, the time of Jesus in the wilderness with the temptations.

Today’s text says to us that “There was no day like that.” It was an exceptional day, not for the hours that it lasted, rather for what one could do in it. That is what the author of the book wanted to say; that is what we need to see when we interpret this passage. This is what we should think when we are going to count our days and measure our time.

What do we fill our days with? What do we invest our time in? Do we make good use of our days? Do our work plans align with the demands of God’s plan? Do we do those things that are part of his will for the world? Do we do those things that promote peace and justice, those things that have to do with the well-being of others?

 

Prayer: Thank you for choosing us, beloved Father. We will follow you in faithfulness and obedience. Amen.

NO HUBO DIA COMO AQUEL

Josue 10:1-14

Y no hubo día como aquel, ni antes ni después de él…

            ¿Cuánto tiempo dura un día? Los siete días de la creación generalmente se interpretan como siete períodos de miles, millones de años. El salmista dice que mil años delante de tus ojos son como el día de ayer que pasó, y como una de las vigilias de la noche.

            En la Biblia se cuenta de días excepcionales: el tiempo de la  lluvia sobre la tierra cuando el diluvio, el tiempo de Moisés  en el Monte Sinaí, el plazo dado para la destrucción de Nínive, el tiempo de Jesús en el desierto cuando las tentaciones.

            En el texto de hoy se nos dice que “no hubo día como aquel”. Fue un día excepcional no por las horas que duró sino por lo que se pudo hacer en él. Eso es lo que quiso el autor del libro decir. Eso es lo que tenemos que ver cuando interpretamos este pasaje. Eso es lo que debemos pensar cuando vamos a contar nuestros días y a medir nuestro tiempo.

            ¿Con qué llenamos nuestros días? ¿En qué invertimos nuestro tiempo? ¿Hacemos buen uso de nuestros días? ¿Nuestros planes de trabajo se ajustan a las demandas del plan de Dios? ¿Hacemos aquellas cosas que son parte de su voluntad para el mundo? ¿Hacemos aquellas cosas que promueven la paz y la justicia, aquellas cosas que tienen que ver con el bienestar de otros?
