 PROTECT THEM IN YOUR NAME

John 17:1-11

Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.

John 17:11b (NRSV)

Jesus Christ worried about those of his own being left alone as he moved toward martyrdom. He knew they were vulnerable to evil, couldn’t resist it much, more so now that they would have to pursue their work. For this, his concern not to leave them orphans, but to guarantee to them the support and companionship of someone like him, led to the promise of the Holy Spirit.

Protect them in your name means: care for them as your own, as your property. Now, the disciples, assisted by the Holy Spirit, had to bear witness before the world and therefore withstand its hostility. The dangers and temptations of Christian witness are abundant, but let’s not think that Jesus’ petition here refers to putting us into an urn to protect us from all danger. The Christian, being a Christian, cannot be protected, but must be exposed, in order to be exactly the light of the world and the salt of the earth.

Let’s consider the case of those women who spend their whole lives sterilizing everything so that their little children won’t have the slightest contact with bacteria. That doesn’t help them to develop the antibodies necessary for dealing with illnesses. Moreover, it’s impossible to keep a child completely sterilized. Similarly, our faith must not be sterilized, but our witness must be authentic.

Prayer: Lord, we cannot rely on our strength. We need your help and that of the Spirit, for without it we cannot continue. Amen.

 GUARDALOS EN TU NOMBRE

Juan 17:1-11
