EBENEZER

1 Samuel 7

Samuel took a stone and set it between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying,“Thus far the Lord has helped us.” (NIV)

1 Samuel 7:12

To walk with God is to walk in security on even the most dangerous and slippery path.

When Samuel responded to God saying, “Speak, your servant is listening,” he was taking the first step in a career that would last for years. There, the work of the last and best Hebrew judge began. His name is entered, among others, in the history of his people, and his consecrated labor is prominent in all  aspects of Israel’s life.

The appeal of this man of God and his life of obedience constitutes a challenge for us today. A comparison of his life with ours becomes necessary.

May we be able to traverse the paths of our church and of our lives as Samuel did in his time, attempting to be instruments in the hands of God amidst his people. And surely the day will come when we can raise a stone as a sign of gratitude, and we will affirm, “Up to now the Lord has helped us.”

Prayer: Lord, help us to obey you, knowing that it’s the best way to thank you. Amen.

EBEN-EZER

1 Samuel 7
