THE PRESENCE OF THE LORD

JEREMIAH 29:1-23

“… you will seek me and find me…”

Jeremiah 29:13

God is in everything and everywhere, in every moment and in every place.  But there are special places where we feel his presence with greater strength.  What are those places?  Only each one of us can answer that question for oneself.  Perhaps for you it is in a corner of your home, at the beach, at church, in the countryside…I’ve personally had this experience during the summer camps held by CANIP.  Everything there speaks to me of God’s presence:  the chirping of the birds, which are like songs of adoration; the greenness of the countryside with its different tones; the intense blue of the sky; the bright dress of the flamboyant trees, the beauty of the almond trees, the majestic reach of the pines, the austerity of the old small town square, the gray benches that vibrate with words of worship and verses from the Bible, the crackle of the leaves beneath my feet, the memories of the children with their games and their smiles, the campfire and the bible studies. In the midst of all this I feel his presence with an extraordinary strength, and I feel an internal peace that I wish would become external so that I could say out loud:  “Lord, I feel your presence here with greater strength.”  

Prayer:  Thank you, Father, for our Presbyterian Camp, because it is there that your presence becomes so much more near and real. Amen.

LA PRESENCIA DEL SEÑOR

JEREMIAS 29:1-23

“… y me buscaréis y me hallaréis…”

Dios está en todo momento y lugar. Pero existen lugares especiales donde sentimos su presencia con más fuerza. ¿Cuáles son esos lugares? Pues sólo cada uno de nosotros puede responderse esta pregunta. Acaso para ti sea un rincón de la casa, la playa, el templo, el campo… Personalmente he tenido esta experiencia en los campamentos de verano en el CANIP. Todo allí me habla de la presencia del Señor: el trino de los pájaros, que son como cantos de alabanza; el verdor del campo con sus diferentes tonalidades, el intenso azul del cielo, el alegre vestido de los flamboyanes, la hermosura de los almendros, la majestuosidad con que se alzan los pinos, la austeridad de la vieja plazoleta, los grises bancos donde vibran palabras de alabanza y versículos de la Biblia, el crujir de la hojarasca bajo mis pies, el recuerdo de los niños con sus juegos y sus risas, la fogata y los Estudios Bíblicos. En medio de todo esto siento su presencia con una fuerza extraordinaria, y siento una paz  interior que quisiera hacerla externa, y poder decir: “Señor, aquí te siento con más fuerza”.

Oración: Gracias Padre, por nuestro Campamento Presbiteriano, porque allí tu presencia se hace más real y cercana. Amén.

I AM ON THE WAY TO BETHLEHEM

MATTHEW 2:1-12

“On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.”

Matthew 2:11

Life is composed of good and bad encounters: some are purposely brought about while others take place by happenstance.  We are constantly looking for something to give meaning to our lives. I recall all the people who have come to me from all over the world.  Some of these persons are still around and are part of my closest circle of friends.  Others, in turn, are mere memories of a past in which they did not leave any impressions of major importance. 

Something similar to this happens with Christ Jesus.  There are those who look upon Him with indifference when He crosses their paths, but others search diligently for him, asking questions without discouragement, like the Wise Men from the Orient.  These are those who dare to break their routines and to follow the star that will lead to an encounter with Jesus, and they do not stop until they have found him and can worship him.  Christ manifests himself and allows himself to be found by all who seek him with goodwill. Once we find the way to Jesus we will never need to retrace our steps over the old paths we’ve already tread.

Prayer: God of light, who used a star to guide the Wise Men to behold baby Jesus, guide us also towards Him.

VOY CAMINO HACIA BELÉN

MATEO 2:1-12

“Cuando entraron en la casa, vieron al niño con María,

su madre, y se arrodillaron para adorarlo”

Mateo 2:11

La vida se compone de encuentros y desencuentros, una veces provocados y otros fortuitos. Buscamos incesantemente algo que nos ayude a dar sentido a nuestras vidas. Recuerdo las personas que llegaron hasta mí procedentes de distintos horizontes. Algunas de esas personas aún perduran y son del círculo de mis amistades más cercanas; otras, en cambio, son recuerdos del pasado que no dejaron huellas de mayor importancia. Con Jesucristo sucede algo parecido. Algunos lo ven con indiferencia cuando Él se cruza en su camino, pero otros le buscan con afán, preguntan sin desanimarse, como los sabios del oriente. Estos últimos son los que se atreven a romper la rutina y siguen la estrella que les conducirá al encuentro con Jesús, y no se detienen hasta hallarlo y adorarlo. Cristo se manifiesta y se deja encontrar por todos los que le buscan de buena voluntad. Una vez que encontramos el camino de Jesús nunca más volvemos a pisar los viejos caminos andados.

Oración: Dios de luz, quien a través de una estrella guiaste desde lejos a los sabios del oriente para ver al niño Jesús, guíanos también a nosotros hasta él.

TIME FOR PRAYER

PSALM 5

“In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice;

In the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation.”

Psalm 5:3

It is difficult to imagine the range and scope of prayer. It is an action within the reach of all of us that contains an immense power.  Through prayer, including individual and personal prayer, we can receive the strength of God, and imbibe from His holiness. Critical circumstances can be mitigated; tragedies can be avoided; difficult problems can be resolved: the forces of evil can be destroyed! Knowing that we have such an appeal, we should take advantage of it and appeal to Him with greater frequency.  We should devote more time to prayer.  We notice that the psalmist had the habit of devoting time to be with God in the morning.  This is a good example for us to follow.

In Mark 1:35 Jesus got up early and went to find a solitary location. He had just finished a very busy day, but he was not too tired to pray.  Why was this?  He knew that by being alone with God, by having an intimate conversation with Him, he would receive the strength to continue his difficult and necessary journey to the resurrection.

Prayer: We pray to you today, Lord, to allow us to clearly see the great treasure we have in prayer. Amen.

TIEMPO PARA LA ORACIÓN

SALMO 5

“Oh Jehová, de mañana oirás mi voz;

de mañana me presentaré delante de ti y esperaré”

Salmo 5:3

Es difícil imaginar el alcance de la oración. Es un acto al alcance de todos y a la vez que contiene un inmenso poder. A través de la oración, incluso la personal, podemos recibir fortaleza de Dios, beber de su santidad, las circunstancias críticas pueden ser modificadas, las tragedias ser evitadas, los problemas difíciles pueden ser resueltos: ¡las fuerzas del mal pueden ser derrotadas! Sabiendo que tenemos tal recuso deberíamos acudir a él con mayor frecuencia, deberíamos dedicar más tiempo a la oración. Notemos que el salmista tenía el hábito de dedicar tiempo para estar con Dios en la mañana. Este es un buen ejemplo que podemos seguir.

En Marcos 1:35 Jesús se levantó temprano y fue a un lugar solitario. Él acababa de terminar un día muy ocupado, pero no estaba tan cansado como para no orar. ¿Por qué? Él sabía que estar a solas con Dios, hablar con él íntimamente, le daba fuerzas para continuar su difícil y necesario camino a la resurrección.

Oración: Hoy oramos a ti Señor, para que nos permitas ver claramente el gran tesoro que tenemos en la oración. Amén.

OPEN THE DOOR TO YOUR HEART

JEREMIAH 22:28-30

“¡O land, land, land

Hear the word of the Lord!”

“Today I don’t have time, but tomorrow I’ll dedicate more time to the Lord’s concerns.” This and others are among our most frequent excuses…and it is because we have time for everything except for the things God would have us do:  prayer, reading the bible, meditations, devotions, worship, good deeds, attending weekly church services…It’s as if we were living on wheels:  there’s hardly enough time to open the doors of our hearts to the Lord.

We would be very ungrateful if we placed aside the one who has never forgotten us, the one who deserves all our love and who always remains watching and waiting for our hearts to open so that He may come inside.  Dedicating our lives to God should not be part of a list of chores.  Rather, it is the result of our sincere gratitude for the great love that He has shown us. No matter how rapid and absorbing our lives may be, we should never allow ourselves to depart from or forget the one who has never abandoned us. Let us live our lives in kairós, in God’s timing, which is perfect and appropriate.  Each day has enough trouble of its own.  Let us dedicate our lives entirely to God.

Prayer: Lord, today we offer you our lives and the time for you to reign within them. Amen.

ÁBRELE LA PUERTA DE TU CORAZÓN

JEREMÍAS 22:28-30

“¡Tierra, tierra, tierra! Oye palabra de Jehová”

“Hoy no tengo tiempo, mañana dedicaré más tiempo a las cosas del Señor”. Estas y otras son nuestras excusas más frecuentes …  y es que  para todo tenemos tiempo, menos para las cosas de Dios: la oración, la lectura de la Biblia, la meditación, las alabanzas, el buen obrar, los domingos en el culto... Es como si viviéramos sobre ruedas: apenas hay tiempo para  abrirle al Señor las puertas de nuestro corazón.

Seríamos muy ingratos si dejáramos a un lado al que nunca nos ha olvidado, al que merece todo nuestro amor y permanece siempre en vela esperando que nuestro corazón se abra para poder entrar.  Dedicar nuestra vida a Dios no debe ser parte de una lista de tareas, sino el resultado de nuestro sincero agradecimiento por tanto amor demostrado por él a nosotros. Por rápida y absorbente que sea la vida, no debemos nunca alejarnos ni olvidarnos de quien nunca nos ha dejado desamparados. Vivamos nuestra existencia en el kairós, en el tiempo de Dios, el tiempo perfecto, el tiempo adecuado. Baste a cada día con su afán. Dediquemos nuestras vidas por entero a Dios.

Oración: Hoy te ofrecemos, Señor, nuestras vidas y tiempo para que reines en él. Amén

TRUST IN THE LORD

PSALM 37

“Wait for the Lord and keep his way…”

Psalm 37:34

When a missionary from India was asked how she knew that God was always by her side, she would often reply: “Because I always attain victory.” And it was true: she encountered success in all of her endeavors, because God was on her side. When the Lord says: “I will grant you your heart’s desires,” it doesn’t mean that He will give us whatever we want, but rather that our continual communion with Him has awakened within us the same purposes that God has for us. God’s intimate companionship with us is such that His desires become our own. This is how He grants us our hearts’ desires.

When General McArthur entered the Bay of Tokyo on September 1, 1945, at the end of the Second World War, and spoke with the enemy, he referred to the “improvement of human character,” and concluded:  *“This improvement must be of the spirit if we are to save the flesh.”  This is the greatest task we have as human beings.

*[The actual quote from McArthur’s speech: “The problem basically is theological and involves a spiritual recrudescence and improvement of human character that will synchronize with our almost matchless advances in science, art, literature and all material and cultural developments of the past two thousand years, It must be of the spirit if we are to save the flesh.”]

Prayer: Lord, we thank you for your promise to always be by our side. Amen

CONFÍA EN EL SEÑOR

SALMO 37

“Espera en Jehová y guarda su camino

y él te ensalzará…”

Salmo 37:34

Cuando se le preguntaba a una misionera de la India cómo sabía que Dios siempre la acompañaba, ella solía responder: “Porque siempre alcanzo la victoria”. Efectivamente, en todas sus actividades alcanzaba éxito, porque Dios estaba de su parte. Cuando el Señor dice: “Te daré las peticiones de tu corazón”, no quiere decir que nos cumplirá todo capricho, sino que nuestra prolongada comunión con él ha despertado en nuestro ser los mismos propósitos que Dios abriga; se digna concedernos tan íntimo compañerismo que sus deseos  son los nuestros. Por eso nos concede las peticiones del corazón.

Cuando el 1ro de Septiembre de 1945, el General McArthur  entró en  la Bahía de Tokio, al terminar la Segunda Guerra Mundial y habló con el enemigo, se refirió  al “mejoramiento humano” y concluyó: “Este mejoramiento debe ser ante todo espiritual, si queremos salvar lo material”. He aquí la tarea más grande del ser humano.

Oración: Gracias Señor, por tu promesa de que siempre estás a nuestro lado. Amén.

SHOULD A THORN PIERCE ME

1 TIMOTHY 6:11-19

“...and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.”

“Should a thorn pierce and wound me,

I pull myself away from it…but I do not abhor it!

When darts of invidious malice

poison me with antipathy,

my plant silently avoids it and turns itself

toward the purer ambience of love and charity.

Resentfulness?  What does it do anyone?

What have resentments ever achieved?

They neither heal our wounds nor correct a wrong.

My rosebush has barely enough time to produce flowers,

Rather than lavishing saps upon thorny spears.

Should my enemy approach my rosebush

He will steal the most beautiful of my roses.

And if any of them were a vivid red,

It would be the blood spilt from evil deeds

Of yesterday, wounds of rancor and violence,

That my rose bush has transformed into a flower.

PRESSING FORWARD

PHILIPPIANS  3:13-14

“I will praise you, O Lord my God,

With all my heart; I will glorify your name forever,

For great is your love toward me. ”

Psalm 86:12-13a

On New Year’s Day in my church we used to write out a letter of promise outlining our goals and resolutions for the new year. Then our pastor would give us an envelope for us to self-address; we would seal the letter and give it to the pastor, who would take on the responsibility of mailing the letter back to us at the end of the year, in order to evaluate our progress and which goals we were able to achieve.  

A new year begins today, and if you want to start it out in good shape you need to leave behind all the bad things that happened to you this past year.  You should recycle those things that can be of use to you this new year and look forward to new opportunities which present themselves.  Don’t allow the negative experiences of the past to affect you to the extent of paralyzing your life. As Paul exhorts the Philippians, we need to open ourselves up to what is ahead.  We cannot be waylaid by obstacles and setbacks. This is the opportune time for us to lift ourselves up and to press forward towards our goal, which is to be pleasing to God.

Prayer: Eternal God, as you have guided us through the year, which has just ended, guide us now and always, so that we can do your will in this new year. Amen.

Año Nuevo

SIGO ADELANTE

FILIPENSES  3:13-14

“Con todo el corazón te alabaré, oh Señor mi Dios; daré gloria a tu nombre para siempre,

porque muy grande es tu amor por mí”

Salmo 86:12-13a

Recuerdo que en año nuevo en mi iglesia escribíamos una carta-compromiso señalando nuestras metas y propósitos para el nuevo año. Luego el pastor nos daba un sobre donde escribíamos nuestro nombre y dirección; lo sellábamos y lo entregábamos al pastor que se encargaría de reenviárnosla a vuelta de correo al finalizar el año, para evaluar cuánto avanzamos y qué cosas logramos. Un nuevo año comienza hoy, y si quieres comenzarlo en buena forma debes dejar atrás todo lo malo que en el año anterior te sucedió, reciclar aquellas cosas que te pueden servir en este nuevo año y mirar hacia adelante, hacia las nuevas oportunidades que se abren. No permitas que las experiencias negativas del pasado, te afecten de tal manera que paralicen tu vida. Así como Pablo exhorta a los filipenses, debemos abrirnos hacia lo que está por delante. No podemos quedarnos postrados por los tropiezos y contratiempos. Es el momento oportuno para levantarnos y proseguir hacia nuestra meta que es agradar a Dios.

Oración: Eterno Dios, tú nos has guiado en el año que pasó, guíanos ahora y siempre, para que podamos en este nuevo año hacer tu voluntad. Amén.
