April 25, Monday Anniversary of the Church “Aida Jorge” (Luyanó) THE NARROW PATH EPHESIANS 6:10-20

April 25, Monday
Anniversary of the Church “Aida Jorge” (Luyanó)

THE NARROW PATH
EPHESIANS 6:10-20

“Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.”
Ephesians 6:11

Jesus Christ’s life was very difficult from the moment of his birth.  Let us recall that he was born in a stable and that his crib was a humble manger.  His father was a simple carpenter with whom he worked.  When he began his ministry, he was often humiliated, persecuted and also scorned, up until his death on the cross.

When we decide to take the path of the Lord, we think that it will be only blessings and good things.  But this is not the case, and even if the road of faith fills us with hope and peace, we often have to pass through difficult pathways. When we are on such rough terrain, it is important to push aside the heavy stones that obstruct it and that cause us to stumble and fall.

We need to have the confidence that if we persevere in faith, as Jesus did, we will be able to achieve our final goal. If we continue on our journey with our focus on God, we will find strength and achieve our spiritual growth in the midst of our difficulties.

Let us never believe that the pathway of Christian men and women is wide and clear.  Let us instead trust in God and in his power to help us reach the finishing line.

Prayer: Lord, give us the strength that we need in order to walk in your ways. Give us perseverance and help us to encourage and support those who have given up because they have not been able to bear their load.  Amen.

EL CAMINO ANGOSTO
EFESIOS 6:10-20

April 24, Sunday GOD, OUR FAITHFUL FRIEND PSALM 34: 1-8

April 24, Sunday
 GOD, OUR FAITHFUL FRIEND
PSALM 34: 1-8

“…blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.”
Psalm 34:8

In José Martí’s book titled “The Golden Age,” which we have all read, there is a simple and very special verse that we learn by heart as children and that says:

The leopard finds shelter
in his dry and brown mountain lair
I have more than the leopard
Because I have a good friend.

It is very important in those difficult moments that we sometimes face in our lives, to have a friend with whom we can share our sorrows and ask for help; knowing that we can rely on sincere and unconditional friendship.

This is what we do when we feel lost and disoriented, and we take refuge in our God of Glory.

When our faith is firm, He always extends His hand to us and says to us: “Do not be afraid, I am here to save you.” He is our friend, our Savior.  Let us trust fully in his love and in his faithfulness.  Let us reciprocate that friendship and cultivate all our trust and faithfulness towards our God.

Prayer: Lord, faithful friend, you never forsake us throughout our lives.  Grant that we may always walk hand in hand with you, receiving your comfort and your blessings. Amen.

 DIOS, NUESTRO AMIGO FIEL
SALMO 34: 1-8

“…Dichoso el hombre que confía en él”
Salmo 34:8

April 23, Saturday MAY CHRIST’S LOVE REIGN! II TIMOTHY 4:1-8

April 23, Saturday
 MAY CHRIST’S LOVE REIGN!
II TIMOTHY 4:1-8

“For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
II Timothy 4:6-7

We have observed that there is an interest in our society for raising self-esteem in those people we call elderly adults and in fostering respect towards them. We find the idea to be very positive. Adults occasionally suffer due to a lack of values expressed in disrespectful and rude behaviors. In many homes their opinions are ignored as old-fashioned. The younger generation complains about the “old folks” and the elderly complain about the young people.

There are various factors that create this situation; but all is resolved when the love of Christ reigns in these relationships.  Love unites, forgives, understands, tolerates and fills us with the spirit of service.

Today’s exhortation is to make the love of Christ reign wherever there is conflict between those who are living together. Love cures tensions and heals the wounds caused by disrespect and intolerance.  Let us respect our elders and our seniors. Let us also be respectful of children and young people, of their opinions, their motivations. May the love of Christ reign!

Prayer: Generous God, fill us with the love and wisdom to create and sustain an environment of peace and harmony within our families. Amen.

¡QUE REINE EL AMOR DE CRISTO!
II TIMOTEO 4:1-8

“Ya estoy próximo a ser sacrificado. El tiempo de mi partida está cercano. He peleado la buena batalla,
he acabado la carrera, he guardado la fe…”
II Timoteo  4: 6-7

April 22, Friday DON’T LET ANYONE LOOK DOWN UPON YOUR YOUTH I TIMOTHY 4:11-16

April 22, Friday
DON’T LET ANYONE LOOK DOWN UPON YOUR YOUTH
I TIMOTHY 4:11-16

“Command and teach these things. Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity.”

I Timothy 4:11-12.

Our society expects our young people to be “examples in everything.”  But we might ask:  What kind of role-models do they have before them to imitate?  The answer would raise many doubts.

I acknowledge that I have met youths who are attentive, educated, respectful, generous, friends of service and helpfulness.  I am sure that you can say the same thing.

Young people reflect their homes, their context.  Timothy received a very good upbringing from his mother and his grandmother.  But an education from our families is not the only important influence.  Our schools, our churches, and our society are all responsible for the education of children and youth. The values that are instilled in young people from each of these places will be present in their journey and will mark their behavior.

Teach young people the values that the Apostle Paul describes and you will see a society full of Timothys.

Prayer: Beloved God, we pray for our youth. Make of them role-models of faith, of love and good behavior. Help your church so that it will continue sowing the values of your kingdom in our young people. Amen.

NINGUNO TENGA EN POCO TU JUVENTUD
I TIMOTEO 4:11-16

y conducta, amor, espíritu, fe y pureza”.

I Timoteo  4:11-12.

April 21, Thursday GOD SEEKS A HOUSE II SAMUEL 7:1-5, 8b-11, 16

April 21, Thursday
GOD SEEKS A HOUSE
II SAMUEL 7:1-5, 8b-11, 16

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD”
Isaiah 55:8

“Man proposes and God disposes” goes the popular saying. In those days, David had plans to build a “house” for God.  Nevertheless, in spite of David’s good intentions, God does not accept his proposal. God wants something else. God goes beyond our human plans.

God does not agree with the grandiose plans of King David, who wants to compete with the greatest temples that other nations have built for their gods. Instead of dwelling within a house of stone, God prefers to build his own “house” from his people, and to walk with them. The lesson is clear:  we cannot confuse God’s promises with human plans.

Moreover, our life journey is often laid out according to our purposes and whims. On many occasions we interpret God’s plans through the filter of our own purposes. But fortunately God, in his perfect wisdom, makes us understand this and takes over the reins of our lives.

God needs people who do not exclaim: “This is what I think.”; “This is what I’ve decided.”; “This is what I’ve planned.”  Rather, we should simply say: “Here I am, Lord. I place my life in your hands.”

Prayer: Lord, teach me to rid myself of whatever is inside me that is keeping you from entering into my house.  Help me to submit to your will. Amen.

DIOS BUSCA CASA
II SAMUEL  7:1-5, 8b-11,16

April 20, Wednesday THE ROAD OF PREPARATION PSALM 24:1-4a, 5-6

April 20, Wednesday
THE ROAD OF PREPARATION
PSALM 24:1-4a, 5-6

“Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”
Psalm 51:10

How many times have we prepared ourselves for the coming of the Lord?  Certainly there have been many.  And yet, we cannot settle for having done it before; rather, we must, once again, prepare ourselves to encounter the Son of God, who is coming to visit us.  Being ready presupposes preparing ourselves inwardly in a responsible manner.  There is a hymn that is frequently used during our Advent and Christmas worship services, reminding us that “The Lord is born every day.”

We should not reserve our preparation for Lent (prior to Holy Week) and Advent (prior to Christmas).  Our preparation to receive and welcome God should be constant.

The psalmist expresses in a certain way that only he who “has cleansed hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol” (Psalm 24:4) is prepared.

Applying this command to ourselves is difficult, but not impossible.  It can be achieved if we are able to experience the wait in a daily fashion; if we draw nearer to God and allow ourselves to be transformed through the action of the Spirit.

Hands are a symbol of our daily actions and the heart symbolizes our intentions.  May everything within us be clean and transparent.  Remember that today there is still an opportunity, that you still have time to prepare yourself.

Prayer: My God, illumine me, watch over me, guide me, change me, because my trust is in You. Amen.

EL CAMINO DE PREPARACIÓN
SALMO  24:1-4a, 5-6

April 19, Tuesday JOY IN THE LORD PHILIPPIANS 4:4-7

April 19, Tuesday
JOY IN THE LORD
PHILIPPIANS 4:4-7

“…sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything.”
II Corinthians 6:10

“When life gets rough, the rough get going” could be the spirit with which the Apostle wrote these words. It is difficult to confront our problems with a rejoicing spirit. I am one of those people who are not able to hide my feelings of pain or anguish in the face of difficulties.

When Paul wrote his Letter to the Philippians, those believers had already begun to experience the torment of persecution.  Paul himself was a prisoner in Rome, and yet, he felt he had to express his solidarity with his brothers and sisters in the faith who were undergoing tribulation, and he does do by using words of joy and rejoicing. “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”

How would these words have been received by those people who were now experiencing days of danger and persecution? Paul knew perfectly well that Christian joy does not depend on anything earthly, but rather that it has its source in the presence of Christ.  He therefore knew that whoever has Christ in his heart will always be joyful.  And this feeling is strengthened by the assurance that the Lord is near, that he will soon return. If we trust in this, we will never lose our hope and our joyfulness, no matter the dangers or the evil that assaults us.

Prayer: Lord of joyfulness, grant that our thankful hearts show the joy of knowing you.  In the midst of our tribulations, help us to grow stronger in our faith and to not depart from your ways that lead us to eternal life. Amen.

ALEGRÍA EN EL SEÑOR
FILIPENSES  4:4-7
