A Living Hope

I Peter  1:3-5

 

and hope does not disappoint us

 

Romans 5:5a (NRSV)

 

            The resurrection of Jesus Christ allows us to trust ourselves to a living hope (1.3), a hope that, as Paul says, does not disappoint because God’s love has been poured into our hearts by the Spirit which God has given us. (Romans 5.5)

 

            As the passage continues, it recognizes that there are afflictions and trials in the present that seem to overshadow that hope. However, the believer’s hope isn’t rooted in the externals of our life but is placed in Christ’s redemptive work.

 

            Let’s live that faith, let’s spread that hope despite the fact we endure bitter times, fears, and shortages, precisely because that faith placed in God, the only source of all that is good, are now essential jewels, supports for life. May glory be to God forever. Amen!

 

 

Prayer: God of love, you have done a marvelous work in your Son by whom we receive redemption and the calling to follow him. May neither faith nor hope fail in our breasts. Amen.

Una esperanza viva

I PEDRO  1:3-5

 

Y la esperanza no avergüenza…

 

Romanos 5:5a

 

            La resurrección de Jesucristo nos permite confiarnos en una esperanza viva (1.3), una esperanza que, al decir de Pablo, no avergüenza, porque el amor de Dios ha sido derramado en nuestros corazones por el Espíritu que nos ha sido dado (Ro 5.5).

 

            En la continuación del pasaje se reconoce que existen en el presente aflicciones y pruebas que parecen ensombrecer esa esperanza. Pero la esperanza del creyente no está basada en las condiciones externas de nuestra existencia, sino que está puesta en la obra redentora de Cristo.

 

            Vivamos esa fe, contagiemos esa esperanza, no obstante a los tiempos amargos que atravesamos, a los temores y escaseces, sino precisamente porque esa esperanza  y esa fe, puestas en Dios, única fuente de todo bien, son ahora joyas imprescindibles, asideros para la vida. Y que a Él sea toda gloria por siempre. ¡Amén!

 

 

Oración: Dios de amor, Tú has hecho una obra maravillosa en tu Hijo, por quien ahora recibimos redención y el llamamiento a seguirle. Permite que nunca caigan ni la fe ni la esperanza de nuestros pechos. Amén.

Faith and Hope in God

I Peter 1:18-21

            From its very beginning, this letter of Peter recognizes the obstacles that the Christian life presents. For those who promise that everything will be better, life seems to contradict them, generating a variety of setbacks and difficulties. Then, in search of solutions, various strategies arise. Some abandon the faith they had so recently embraced, thinking that the old life was better; others persist in a a very distant, uncommited manner that in practice allows no reconciliation of themselves as believers. Others cling tight to the faith and hope that was sowed in their hearts; that is precisely the exhortation in this letter.

 

            The argument focuses itself on the theme of Cross-Resurrection. Christ was chosen from the foundation of the world to be the Lamb of God for our ransom. The price paid was the cross which has opened the doors to the prodigious divine action of raising him from the dead and exalting him at the Right Hand of God.  Undergirding these convictions and certainties, the letter affirms, Through him you have come to trust in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are set on God. (1 Peter 1.21)

 

 

Prayer: Good Savior, help us to hold firm in the midst of adverse circumstances, faithful in the midst of abundance, with our faith and hope resting only in You. Amen.

Hebreos 12:2a

 

            Esta carta de Pedro, desde sus mismos inicios, reconoce los obstáculos que se presentan en la vida cristiana. Para quienes prometen que todo irá mejor, la vida pareciera contradecirles generando diversidad de contratiempos y dificultades. Vienen entonces diversos enfoques en busca de soluciones; algunos abandonan la fe que recién han abrazado, pensando que les iba mejor en su antigua vida; otros permanecen, pero de un modo muy distante, poco comprometido, prácticamente nada permite reconocerles como creyentes; otros, sin embargo, se aferran a la fe y a la esperanza que se ha sembrado en sus corazones, y esta es precisamente la exhortación.

 

            El argumento se enfoca en el esquema de cruz-resurrección. Cristo ha sido escogido desde la fundación del mundo para ser el Cordero de Dios por nuestro rescate, el precio pagado ha sido la cruz, pero ella ha abierto las puertas a la portentosa acción divina al levantarle de entre los muertos y exaltarle a la diestra del Padre. Bajo estas convicciones y certezas, afirma entonces la carta: “...por medio de él ustedes creen en Dios, que lo resucitó y glorificó, de modo que su fe y su esperanza están puestas en Dios” (I Pe 1.21).

 

 

Oración: Buen Señor, ayúdanos a mantenernos firmes en medio de las circunstancias adversas, fieles en medio de las bonanzas, con la fe y la esperanza puestas solo en Ti. Amén.

THE BIBLE, THE HEART OF GOD

 

“Examine the scriptures, since you think that in them you have eternal life.”

 

John 5:39 (CEB)

 

            This book reveals the mind of God, the moral and spiritual state of man, the path of salvation, the punishment of the unredeemed sinner, the blessedness of the believer.  Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are needed, its histories true and its decisions permanent.  

 

            Read it to be wise.  Believe in it to be safe.  Practice it to be holy.  It is light that directs, bread that sustains and comfort that brings happiness.  It is the map of the traveler, the compass of the sailor, the sword of the soldier and the guide of the Christian.

 

            In the Bible is paradise restored, heaven is opened and the gates of hell are uncovered.  Christ is its great theme, our salvation its good purpose and the glory of God its goal.  It should occupy the mind, govern the heart and guide the steps.  Read it often in meditation, and prayer. 

 

            It is a mine of prosperity, a paradise of glory and a river of pleasure.  It is given to us in this life, it will be opened in judgment and it will be eternally remembered.  It is about the greatest duty, it will reward the most excellent work, and it will condemn all who play with its sacred content.

 

Prayer: Thank you loving Father, for the spring that we have in the Bible.  We ask you Lord, to have the discipline that is required for its study.  Don’t allow us to not care for it or forget it.  Amen.

LA BIBLIA, EL CORAZON DE DIOS

 

Escudriñad las Escrituras, porque a vosotros  os parece

que en ella tenéis la vida eterna

 

Juan 5:39

 

            Este libro revela la mente de Dios, el estado moral y espiritual del hombre, el camino de salvación, el castigo del pecador no redimido, la bienaventuranza del creyente. Sus doctrinas son santas, sus preceptos son necesarios, sus historias verdaderas y sus decisiones inmutables.

 

            Léela para ser sabio. Cree en ella para estar seguro. Practícala para ser santo. Es luz que dirige, pan que sostiene y consuelo que alegra. Es mapa del viajero, brújula del navegante, espada del soldado y la carta magna del cristiano.

 

            En la Biblia está el paraíso restaurado, el cielo abierto y las puertas del infierno descubiertas. Cristo es su gran tema, nuestra salvación su buen propósito y la gloria de Dios su meta. Debe ocupar la mente, gobernar el corazón y guiar los pasos. Léela en meditación, con frecuencia y oración.

 

            Es mina de prosperidad, un paraíso de gloria y un río de placer. Nos es dada en esta vida, será abierta en el juicio y será recordada eternamente. Trata del deber más grande, recompensará la labor más excelente y condenará a todo aquel que juega con su sagrado contenido.

 

 

Oración: Gracias Padre amado, por el manantial que tenemos en la Biblia. Te pedimos Señor, tener la disciplina que se requiere para su estudio. No permitas que nos descuidemos y la olvidemos. Amén.
