WOMAN, YOUR FAITH HAS SAVED YOU

LuKE 7:36-50

“Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little.”

Luke 7: 47 

Lord, today I give you thanks because you know how to look at things as they are and with all the profundity of your love.

I recall that woman who brought a jar of perfume to the house of Simon the Pharisee and who showed you her affection in many ways… And I recall how everyone criticized her for it:  “He has to know what kind of woman she is…”

However, with your deep gaze that uncovers the value beyond any price, you made it clear through parables and everything else, that even imperfect love is more important than acting “correctly” without love.

Let us pray:  Lord, we women usually have innumerable gestures of love, care, service and protection which seem to go unnoticed. Thank you for knowing how to see and value these gestures.  Thank you for giving us a place by Your side.   Amen.

MUJER, TU FE TE HA SALVADO

Señor, hoy te quiero dar gracias porque sabes mirar las cosas tal como son y con toda la profundidad de tu amor.

Recuerdo aquella mujer que trajo el frasco de perfume a la casa de Simón el fariseo, y te mostró su cariño de muchas maneras.... Y recuerdo que todos te criticaban por eso: “éste tiene que saber quién es esta”

 Sin embargo, con tu mirada profunda que descubre el valor más allá del precio, resaltaste con parábola y todo, que el amor aunque imperfecto, es más importante que lo “correcto” sin amor.

THE LOVE OF GOD IN JESUS CHRIST

MALACHI 1: 1-3

“I have loved you,” says the Lord.

                                                                                                        Malachi 1:2a

As we know, the last book of the Old Testament is of the prophet Malachi and the first book of the New Testament is the Gospel of Matthew.  Both books are connected not through being so close to one another in the Bible but because Jesus, like the prophet, takes up the importance of living the Ten Commandments.  However, Jesus condenses these commandments into two:  love God and love your neighbor.

We often emphasize in sermons and in our devotional lives the importance of devoting ourselves to others, to living for others, to loving our neighbor.  But it is important to affirm our devotion to our neighbor in the love that God has for us.  The love of God in Jesus, when it becomes part of our lives, should be the primary motivation of our love.  The Lord loves us and shows us this love through Jesus Christ. 

Prayer: Our God, grant that the foundation of our faith and of our love toward others be your love toward us all, through Jesus Christ.  Thank you for your love. Amen.

El AMOR DE DIOS EN JESUCRISTO

MALAQUÍAS 1: 1-3

“El Señor dice: Yo los amo a ustedes.”

Malaquías 1:2a

Como sabemos, el último libro del Antiguo Testamento es el del profeta Malaquías y el primero del Nuevo Testamento, es el evangelio de Mateo. Ambos libros están conectados no por estar tan cercanos uno a otro en la Biblia, sino porque Jesús retoma, al igual que el profeta, la importancia de vivir los 10 mandamientos. Sin embargo, Jesús concisa estos mandamientos en dos: ama a Dios y a ama tu prójimo.

Muchas veces en sermones y en la vida devocional se enfatiza la importancia de entregarnos a otras personas, de vivir por otros, de amar al prójimo. Pero es importante afirmar nuestra entrega al prójimo en el amor que Dios nos tiene.  El amor de Dios en Jesús, al formar parte de nuestra vida,  debe ser la primera motivación de nuestro amor. El Señor nos ama y nos muestra ese amor a través de Jesucristo.

Oración: Dios nuestro, permite que la base de nuestra fe y de nuestro amor hacia las demás, sea el amor tuyo hacia nosotros y nosotras, por medio de Jesucristo. Gracias por tu amor. Amén.

GIVE PRIORITY TO WHAT IS TRULY IMPORTANT                                                                                      

LUKE 10: 38-42                                                                                                                                                 “…only one thing is needed.”

Luke 10:42

How many times have we not done things which could change our lives because, for example, we had to clean the house or watch a baseball game?  Martha and Mary’s story, beyond the juxtaposition that has always been insinuated between the tasks that each of them is doing, exhorts us to think that the Word of God is everything, not in the least only something occasional.

We sometimes spend the day doing nothing and we waste the learning or service opportunities given to us, in order to complete chores which can wait, or that another person could do.  We sometimes prioritize “urgent” matters before what is truly important.

Oftentimes, at church, like Martha, we hurry to be “doing” and this “doing” does not come from attentive listening to the word of God, and it runs the risk of turning into an ineffective spinning in the void.

Prayer: Lord, grant that we might give priority in our lives to what is truly important. Give us wisdom and discernment. Lord, grant that our “doing” be based on your word, so that it can then bear fresher and more durable fruit.

DAR PRIORIDAD

A LO VERDADERAMENTE IMPORTANTE

Cuántas veces no dejamos de hacer cosas que podrían cambiar nuestras vidas porque, por ejemplo, teníamos que limpiar la casa o ver un juego de pelota. La historia de Marta y María, más allá de la yuxtaposición que siempre se ha insinuado entre las tareas que ambas realizan, nos exhorta a pensar que la Palabra de Dios es todo, menos algo ocasional.

A veces nos pasamos el día sin hacer nada y desperdiciamos oportunidades de formación o servicio que se nos dan, por completar faenas que pueden esperar, o que otra persona puede hacer. A veces priorizamos cosas “urgentes”, ante lo que es verdaderamente importante.

Muchas veces, en la iglesia, como Marta, nos precipitamos en “hacer” y este “hacer” no parte de una escucha atenta de la palabra de Dios, por lo que se corre el peligro de convertirse en un inadecuado girar en el vacío.

Oración: Señor, permite que podamos dar prioridad en nuestras vidas a lo que de verdad es importante. Concédenos sabiduría y discernimiento. Señor, permite que nuestro “hacer” esté basado en tu palabra, y así este dará frutos mucho más frescos y duraderos.

SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD                                                                                                

LUKE 12, 13-21                                                                                                                                                            “A man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”

Luke 12:15b

Human beings are ceaselessly seeking joy and happiness.  This search, however, often equates happiness with obtaining material possessions. Many people lose sleep over wearing a certain brand of clothing, or jewelry.  By contrast, the words of Jesus in the Gospel cannot be reduced to the level of a single individual. For example, it must also be mentioned that the greed of a few can impede the development of many people and places.

Jesus, as Teacher, was approached by those begging him to restore order, to deliver justice.  And Jesus goes beyond the external; he goes to the root of the problems, to the heart of the human being.  For Him, the first step is to remove the mask of greed that dominates us, and secondly, to guard over the rights of each individual.  By doing the first, the second will be achieved.   Let us first seek the Kingdom of God, and all the rest will be added unto us.

Prayer: Lord, grant that we may always seek the only fortune:  love, the protection of life. Help us to concentrate our strengths in being truly human and not in possessing or accumulating perishable things. Amen.

BUSCA PRIMERO EL REINO DE DIOS                                                                                                

LUCAS 12, 13-21                                                                                                                                                            “La vida no depende de poseer muchas cosas”

Lucas 12:15b

El ser humano busca sin descanso la alegría y la felicidad. Sin embargo en torno a esta búsqueda muchas veces pone la felicidad en la obtención de bienes materiales. El usar un determinado tipo de ropa, de “marca,” como se dice, o usar prendas costosas, le quita el sueño a muchas personas.

Por otro lado, la palabra de Jesús en el Evangelio no puede quedar reducida a lo individual. También hay que mencionar, por ejemplo, que la codicia de unos pocos impide el desarrollo de muchas personas y pueblos.

A Jesús, como Maestro, se le acercan y le suplican que ponga orden, que haga justicia. Y Jesús va más allá de lo externo, va a la raíz de los problemas, va al corazón del ser humano. Para Él el primer paso es desenmascarar la codicia que nos domina, y luego velar por los derechos de cada uno. Con lo primero, se conseguirá lo segundo.

Busquemos primero el Reino de Dios y todo lo demás se nos añadirá.

Oración: Señor, permite que siempre busquemos la única fortuna: el amor, el favorecimiento de la vida. Ayúdanos a concentrar nuestras fuerzas en ser verdaderamente humanos y no en tener y acumular cosas perecederas. Amén

 NOT PITY, BUT MERCY 

LUKE 10: 25-37

“But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him.”

Luke 10:33

“Pity is not a good feeling; do not ever call anyone a poor little thing”.  Since I was a little girl, this is what my father used to say, but I did not yet understand the meaning of his words.  After helping people in crises or illness, I now understand completely. Pity does not allow us to see the dignity and grandeur of people; it only shows us their weakness, their vulnerability.  God invites us to feel mercy for others, and not pity.

The parable of the Good Samaritan gives us a better understanding of this. All who passed by the injured man on the road may have felt pity, as was undoubtedly the case with the priest and the Levite. But it is one thing to feel pity and to pass the person by; it is another thing entirely to be moved to mercifulness and to extend one’s hands to help, to heal, to carry the load of another man or woman. Pity paralyzes us and leaves us without many options toward the person who inspires that feeling.  In contrast, mercy is the love that motivates us in such a way that we never pass the person by.

Prayer: Merciful God, tear out all feelings of pity from within us. Fill our hearts with a love so intense for others, that we will always be willing to come to their aid and never pass them by in the face of pain and desolation.  In Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.

LÁSTIMA NO, MISERICORDIA SÍ

LUCAS 10: 25-37

“Pero un samaritano que iba de camino,

vino cerca de él y, al verlo,

fue movido a misericordia”

Lucas 10:33

“La lástima no es un sentimiento bueno, nunca digas a nadie pobrecito” le oí decir a mi padre desde que era niña, entonces no comprendía el significado de sus palabras. Después de acompañar a personas en crisis o enfermas, lo he comprendido todo. La lástima no nos deja ver la dignidad y grandeza de las personas, sólo nos muestra su debilidad, su vulnerabilidad. Dios nos invita a sentir verdadera misericordia por los demás y no lástima.

Con la parábola del buen samaritano tenemos una mejor comprensión de esto. Todos los que pasaron por al lado del malherido en el camino, quizás sintieron lástima, nadie dudaría de los buenos sentimientos de un sacerdote y un levita. Pero una cosa es sentir lástima y pasar de largo; y otra bien diferente es ser movido a misericordia y extender las manos para socorrer, sanar, llevar la carga del otro o la otra. La lástima nos paraliza y deja sin muchas opciones a aquella persona que nos inspira ese sentimiento. En cambio, la misericordia, el amor nos moviliza de tal manera que nunca pasamos de largo.

Oración: Dios misericordioso, arranca de nosotros todo sentimiento de lástima. Llena nuestros corazones de un amor tan intenso por los demás, de tal manera que siempre estemos dispuestos a socorrer y nunca pasemos de largo ante el dolor y la desolación. En Jesucristo oramos, amén.

THE DEVOTIONAL CORNER

PSALM 95

“Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts…”

Psalm 95:7-8

The most important day is today.  It does us no good to bury ourselves in past memories, because water that has already passed does not make the water wheel turn. And it also does us no good to dream of a future toward which we are not working today.  Each new dawn bestows upon us the immense privilege of listening to God’s voice and attending to his call.

 “A time is coming, and has now come, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth”.  These are the words of the Lord Jesus to the Samaritan woman by Jacob’s well. They are words that are repeated day after day in the experience of each Christian in time alone with the Lord.

The first thing in God’s voice today is to worship him.  And into this worship goes our gratitude, our feelings of dependence, our humility, our assurance of being forgiven.

Be thankful to God for each moment of your existence.  Quit worrying about what you do not have and live today as if you were in a devotional corner, worshipping God in spirit and in truth.

Prayer: Our Father, grant that on this day I may begin a true return to you. Grant that I may hear your voice and obey your calling.  Amen.

EL RINCÓN DEVOCIONAL

SALMO 95

“Si oyeres hoy su voz, no endurezcáis  vuestro corazón”

Salmo 95:7-8

El día más importante es hoy. De poco nos vale ya sumirnos en los recuerdos del pasado, porque agua pasada no mueve molinos. Y de poco nos vale también soñar con un futuro para el cual no estamos laborando hoy. Con cada alba se nos echa encima el inmenso privilegio de escuchar la voz de Dios y atender  su llamado.

“El tiempo viene, y ahora es, cuando los verdaderos adoraran al Padre en espíritu y verdad” Son palabras del Señor Jesús a la samaritana junto al pozo de Jacob. Son palabras que se repiten día a día en la experiencia de cada cristiano a solas con el Señor.

Lo primero para escuchar hoy es la voz de Dios es adorarle. Y en esta adoración va nuestra gratitud, nuestro sentimiento de dependencia, nuestra humillación, nuestra certeza de que seremos perdonados.

Sea agradecido a Dios por cada minuto de su existencia. Deje de preocuparse por lo que no tiene y viva el día de hoy como en un rincón devocional, adorando a Dios en espíritu y en verdad.

Oración: Padre nuestro, permite que en este día determine un verdadero regreso a ti. Que escuche tu voz y obedezca tu llamado. Amén.

GIVING AND SHARING

Proverbs 11:24-31

“One man gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.”

Proverbs 11:24

You may have experienced the following:  giving something away that you needed for yourself. This is a difficult practice because our basic instincts, or rather training, lead us to hoard or to build up supplies, or to otherwise hold on to the things we need.  An ethic of sharing, however, opens up infinite horizons for us by drawing us nearer to God.  This is the solidarity that makes us feel fulfilled even when we have limitations and necessities.

Sharing is not just an ethical principle; it is a way of seeing and assuming life.  Jesus shared healing with the sick, he shared hope with those suffering from hopelessness, the good news with the dispossessed and disillusioned.

Today we are called to share not from what we have in abundance, but from what little we have even if we consider it insignificant.

Awaken all of your senses today so that you can share something with another from the abundant blessings that God has given you.

Prayer: Beloved God, thank you for giving us the possibility to share even the things that we need for ourselves.  Cure us of our selfishness and allow us to live a life of empathy, giving to others from however much or little we may have. Amen.

Proverbios 11:24-31

“Hay quienes reparten, y les es añadido más; y hay quienes retienen más de lo que es justo, pero vienen a pobreza”

Proverbios 11:24

Quizás haya pasado usted por esta experiencia: dar a alguien algo que usted también necesite. Esta es una práctica difícil pues nuestros instintos más bien están entrenados en retener, acaparar, es decir, guardar aquello que nos es necesario. Sin embargo, una ética del compartir nos abre horizontes infinitos que nos acercan más a Dios. Esa es la solidaridad que nos hace sentirnos llenos aún cuando tengamos limitaciones y necesidades.

Compartir no es solo un principio ético, es una forma de ver y asumir la vida. Jesús compartió sanidad con los enfermos, esperanza con los desesperanzados, la buena noticia con los desposeídos y desilusionados. 

Hoy estamos llamados a compartir no de lo que nos sobra, sino lo que tenemos aunque lo consideramos insignificante.

Despierte hoy todos sus sentidos para que pueda compartir con su prójimo algo de lo mucho con lo que Dios le ha bendecido.

Oración: Amado Dios, gracias porque nos das la posibilidad de compartir incluso aquello que necesitamos. Cúranos de nuestros egoísmos y permítenos vivir una vida con sentido, dando a lo demás de lo mucho o lo poco que tengamos. Amén
