COMFORT THE MOURNERS

JOHN 11:28-37

Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”… Jesus wept

John 11:23,35 (NRSV)

            When I was young, I felt uncomfortable visiting people who had lost a loved one. I wondered what to say to them, but I have learned that I don’t have to feel like that. I believe that a person instructed in God’s Word, surrendered to the Holy Spirit, and sensitive to the pain of his fellows, can share a word of consolation with the mourner, although at times just being there is enough.

            We can learn from the way Jesus ministered to Martha and Mary when their brother Lazarus died. Jesus spoke to Martha about the certainty of the resurrection, and he wept with her.

            Let’s not stay away from those who are hurting. They need the help of Christian friends filled with sensitivity. We can offer them comfort, even without saying anything.

            The simple act of being at their side shows our affection for them in Christ.

Prayer: Lord, prepare us to give words of comfort and encouragement to mourners.  Grant us your help in comforting others. Thank you, Lord, because we know you will.  Amen.

Jesús le dijo: Tu hermano resucitará… Jesús lloró

Juan 11:23,35

            Cuando era joven me sentía incómoda visitando a personas que habían perdido a un ser querido. Me preguntaba qué les iba a decir; pero he aprendido que no tengo por qué sentirme así.

            Creo que una persona instruida en la Palabra de Dios, rendida al Espíritu Santo, y sensible al dolor de sus semejantes, podrá compartir una palabra de consuelo al doliente, aunque en oca-siones con su presencia sea suficiente.

            Nosotros podemos aprender de la forma en que Jesús ministró a Marta y a María al morir su hermano Lázaro. Jesús le habló a Marta de la certeza de la resurrección y lloró con ella.

            No nos mantengamos alejados de los que se duelen. Necesitan la ayuda de amigos cristianos llenos de sensibilidad. Podemos ofrecerles consuelo, incluso sin decir nada.

            El solo hecho de estar a su lado muestra nuestro afecto en Cristo por ellos.

Oración: Señor, prepáranos para dar palabras de consuelo y aliento a los dolientes. Concédenos tu ayuda para consolar a otros. Gracias Señor, porque sabemos lo harás. Amén.
