Tuesday, January 21- “HAS GOD FORGOTTEN ME?”

HEBREWS 4:12-13
“Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”
Hebrews 4:13

Our community had a birthday celebration for its oldest member:  her 104th!  During the course of the party, someone congratulated the centenarian for her advanced age and asked her to what she attributed her longevity. “God has forgotten about me and left me behind on earth!” she replied.  This was only meant to be an amusing response to make us laugh, since we know that God never loses sight of a single one of his creatures. He forms the hearts of each of us, is attentive to our needs, and chooses the moment to call us into his presence.

However, it would be interesting to ask ourselves: Have you forgotten about God?  We often feel discouraged because we do not receive an answer [to our prayer]. When a time of testing arrives, and each time that worry reappears in our minds, let us say to the Lord: “I am in your hands and under your will.”

Prayer:  Lord, help me to take advantage of each opportunity to do your will and to be a messenger of your love to others.
Amen.

“¿DIOS SE OLVIDÓ DE MI?”
HEBREOS 4:12-13

Monday, January 20- POWER-FILLED PRAYER

 DANIEL 6:10-23
“Then these men went as a group and found Daniel praying and asking God for help.”
Daniel 6:11
We are all exposed to temptations that constantly surround us.  Nevertheless, no matter how many or how serious these temptations may be, prayer is an effective way for God to fill us with strength and to guide us in our efforts to conquer these temptations. Jesus himself invites us to pray constantly and tirelessly, because our needs are constant and oftentimes urgent.
But in order for our prayers to be effective we must conduct an introspective examination to determine what God requires of us, what is truly important and, moreover, to go beyond our intentions and act according to what is needed in each situation for which we are interceding.
Prayer without ceasing, as in the case of the prophet Daniel, can also be a form of testimony and faithfulness, and could lead many to God.
Prayer: Help us, God, to remain in constant communion with you, through intercessory prayer and actions of solidarity. Amen.
ORACIÓN DE  PODER
DANIEL 6:10-23

Sunday, January 19- AN EXEMPLARY LIFE

2 TIMOTHY  1:8-12
“So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord…”
2Timothy 1:8
Observing her, in spite of her eighty years, when she attends the Sunday services and during the weeknights, is a motive of inspiration and increases our faith. She walks upright and her step is sure, because she knows in whom she has believed.  She never hesitates when it comes to praying during worship.  She participates in bible studies when others are hesitant or silent. In the last few years, neither shortages nor poverty have diminished her faith.  She lives by herself in a modest house and helps her neighbors as much as she is able. Her lifestyle supports the testimony of her lips.
Intimate communion with the Teacher is one of the highest privileges of the Christian life. Coming to know Christ through word and deed is a work of love that belongs to each Christian. A spiritual life such as this is a greater blessing than mere human wisdom, and it is better preparation for confronting the tests which life brings us.

Prayer: Lord, help us to know you better each day and to contribute to the realization of your plans through our daily actions. Amen.
VIDA EJEMPLAR
2 TIMOTEO  1:8-12
“Por tanto, no te avergüences
de dar testimonio de nuestro Señor…”
2Timoteo 1:8

Saturday, January 18- Week of Prayer for Unity Among Christians

IS CHRIST DIVIDED?
1 CORINTHIANS 1:1-17
“I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought.”
1 Corinthians 1:10
The wide diversity of Christian churches leads us to reflect upon Paul’s question to the Corinthians: “Is Christ divided?” With faith, we reply: “No!” and yet our communities continue to harbor scandalous divisions. Paul directs harsh words to the Corinthians for the way in which they have distorted the Gospel and have broken the unity of the community. “I follow Paul”; “I follow Apollo”; “I follow Peter”. Neither does Paul praise those who consider Christ as their leader, because they were using his name in order to distinguish themselves from the rest of the Christian community. We cannot invoke the name of Christ in order to put up walls around ourselves. Our unity, life, and salvation come from Christ, even though we may participate in one group or another, and our local churches nourish our faith and help us to walk as disciples of Jesus.  Paul challenges us to ask ourselves if we harbor division even in Christ’s name, “emptying the cross of its power,” or if we share the good news of Jesus Christ.

Prayer: God of goodness, awaken in us a feeling of responsibility to maintain the unity of your Church and the untiring desire to work towards reconciliation.

“Yo pertenezco a Pablo, yo a Apolo, yo a Pedro”.

Friday, January 17- REPAYING OFFENSE WITH LOVE

1 PETER 3: 8-17
“A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense.”
Proverbs 19:11
These verses bring to mind the story of an old Samurai who taught Zen Buddhism to his young followers. On a certain occasion a warrior known for using unscrupulous tactics in order to beat his opponents challenged the old Samurai in a public square.  In front of many onlookers, the warrior threw all sorts of insults at him in order to disarm and thus be able to defeat him.  The old man remained impassive and the young man had to back down in humiliation.  Later on, his disciples questioned their teacher’s supposed cowardice in allowing himself to be publicly insulted. With great wisdom the elderly man replied: “If someone approaches you with a gift and you do not receive it, to whom does the gift belong?”  “To the person who offered it,” replied one of his disciples.  “The same thing applies to envy, rage and insults:  when they are not accepted, they continue to belong to those who carry them upon themselves.”

Prayer: God of mercy, allow our hearts to be free of anger and resentfulness toward those who offend us. We ask that our lips may express only words of blessing.  Amen.

OFENSA CON AMOR SE PAGA
1 PEDRO 3: 8-17
“El buen juicio hace al hombre paciente;

Thursday, January 16- LET US SEEK WISDOM

PROVERBS 3:1-6
“In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Proverbs 3:6
What a delight it is to know that, on no matter what path we find ourselves, even those strewn with stumbling blocks, God will make our paths straight!
Our entire lives can be plagued by fear and anxiety.  There are many times when I’ve been in situations for which I could find no explanation, during which I suffered deep disappointment, perhaps for having placed too much trust in another person. After days and nights filled with sleeplessness, however, the Lord has always given me the strength that I requested.
I have come to understand that when life’s storms intensify, we can nevertheless fearlessly anchor ourselves to that safe haven which is Christ.
We should always ask God to allow us the privilege to hear his voice as a soft and gentle whisper.

Prayer:  Lord, may we be able to recognize you in our pathways, and may you always be our faith’s anchor.  Amen.

 ALCANCEMOS SABIDURÍA
PROVERBIOS 3:1-6
“Reconócelo en todos tus caminos,
y él enderezará tus veredas”
Proverbios 3:6

Wednesday, January 15- HANDS READY FOR WORK

MARK 10:13-16
“And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.”
Mark 10:16

As a young boy I used to listen to my grandmother singing the hymn “Caring Hands,” from which I still recall this beautiful verse: “hands that always knew how to calm all pain, the divine hands of my redeemer, the hands that multiplied the fish and the bread, miraculous hands that give life.” This beautiful song makes me think about our discipleship. As Jesus used his hands to serve, to bless, to heal and to feed, today we should extend our hands to do good and to accomplish the calling that God has given us to build his Kingdom.
Today we too need hands that are ready to work and help those who are in need.  In our work at home, and outside the home, and at church, we have the opportunity to keep our hands busy in his service.
Prayer: Lord, help us to place aside our laziness so that we may occupy our hands in service to the Church and to the world. Amen.

MANOS DISPUESTAS A TRABAJAR
MARCOS 10:13-16
