Sunday, December 14 THE LITTLE THINGS 2 KINGS 5:1-19

Sunday, December 14
THE LITTLE THINGS

2 KINGS 5:1-19
“Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than any of the waters of Israel?”
2 Kings 5:12ª

Who would have imagined that the salvation of all humanity could come from Israel?  The scorn that Naaman the Sirian showed from his colonial arrogance toward the “lesser” cultures illustrates God’s pleasure in manifesting himself to all humanity, but always starting from the lowliest.  At the moment in history in which Israel makes its entrance as a nation, there already existed great civilizations such as Egypt, Greece, China… Nevertheless, in that narrow strip of Palestine, God set his sight upon a people from whom his definitive revelation would come:  Jesus of Nazareth.

How many times have we been victims of scorn due to specific economic, esthetic, religious, sexual, or medical conditions?  It is at such times that we need to remember that God’s watchfulness over us does not abandon us due to being considered lowly or unappreciated by others.  Moreover, we should be careful not to be the ones who spurn or scorn others for one reason or another.

In these days of preparation for celebrating the arrival of Jesus, we should pay special attention to all those small things in which God supposedly could not dwell. Because that is nevertheless where God most deigns to reveals himself.

Prayer: God of goodness and mercy, enlighten us so that we do not forget the true meaning of your presence among us. Amen.
Las pequeñas cosas

2 Reyes 5:1-19

Saturday, December 13 LET US BE FAITHFUL ZECHARIAH

Saturday, December 13
LET US BE FAITHFUL

ZECHARIAH
“Are these not the words the Lord proclaimed through the earlier prophets…?”
Zechariah 7:7

Once more we find ourselves in that time of the year when people think about God and about good will more than at any other time.

It seems that the closer we get to Christmas, the more we notice that people are willing to express interest in religious things.  Church attendance and its related activities also increase.

Is this greater religious activity honoring to God?

We need to be careful that what happened to the people in the days of Zechariah does not happen to us.  Even though they were involved in religious activities, they only wanted to please themselves. A vital element was missing: obedience to God.

Instead of performing empty rituals, God wanted them to show obedience, to administer true justice, showing mercy and compassion, refusing to oppress the widows, the orphans and the poor, and not devising evil plans against anyone else.

The best way to honor God during this special season is by evaluating our own devotion to Him in light of these four commands given to the people of God.

Our Lord does not desire empty or selfish religious activities.  He wants the gift of obedience expressed in acts of kindness and usefulness for those who are less fortunate than we are.

Prayer: Father, grant that we may be faithful and obedient.  This is our prayer. Amen.

SEAMOS FIELES

Friday, December 12 C LIVING WORD HEBREWS 4: 11-12

Friday, December 12
Celebration of the Dependent Church of Vegas (Nueva Paz)

LIVING WORD

HEBREWS 4: 11-12
“For the word of God is living and active.”
Hebrews 4:12

We like to talk.  Speech is a great gift from God. But we also need to listen to others, in order to assign practical value to the human word.  With respect to the word of God, we need for it to penetrate deep within us and our lives for the good of our very own lives.  We need for the power of the divine message to become real within our very beings.  We cannot live without effective spiritual breath.

The devotional hour is the best hour of the day, if within it God’s word penetrates inside you and makes itself effective for you throughout the other hours of the day.  Everything will be different and bright on the day that you speak with God in the morning and also listen to what God has to say to you for each day.  The Word of God is living and effective and sharper than a two-edged sword, to enter into the deep needs of the souls of God’s creatures.

Prayer
: Father and Lord, help me to be able to have a daily moment of communion with you.  Grant that in this period of Advent your word be living and effective and that it may penetrate my being with a message of life. Amen.

PALABRA VIVA

HEBREOS 4: 11-12

Thursday, December 11 SIGNS! LUKE 2:54-56

Thursday, December 11
SIGNS!

LUKE 2:54-56
“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign:  the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.”
Isaiah 7:14

There are signs everywhere:  traffic signs, warning signs, signs helping us to avoid accidents, and in nature as well we see signs such as a cloudy sky announcing that it will soon rain.  We use these and other signs in our lives every day, but…do we stop and look and listen for the signs that God sends us?  Most of us surely do not; we sometimes ignore these signs and other times only obey the ones we like or find interesting, and not the others.

In the stories of the first Christmas, we read that many signs preceded the arrival of the Immanuel.  Just as we do today, some of those signs were ignored, underestimated or simply not believed.  On that first Christmas, as in our Christmas today, we need to be attentive to God’s signs. We need to be observant and alert, because God is with us and we should be willing to open our minds and hearts to the signs of Immanuel.

Prayer: Lord, we pray for those who need a sign from you.  Grant that all of our senses be alert so that we can receive you in each new birth.  Amen.

¡SEÑALES!

LUCAS  12:54-56

Wednesday, December 10 FOLLOWING THE RIGHT PATH JONAH

Wednesday, December 10

FOLLOWING THE RIGHT PATH

JONAH
“Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.”
Jonah 3:2

At times we lose the meaning of life.  Many people walk in circles and their lives do not move forward much. The story of Jonah speaks of a man who one day found himself in such a situation. Jonah seemed to have lost his way; he lacked perspective.

Like Jonah, we often lose our way, or stray off from the right path.  Sometimes we think that everything is against us:  the boat won’t go anywhere, the wind is blowing in the wrong direction.  Luck is definitely not in our favor.  At times we even want to die (v. 12).  Without perspective, as with Jonah, we give up; we cease to believe.

And yet Jonah knows the truth; he knows what he needs to do but he wants to deviate from the path that God has indicated to him. Like Jonah, we choose the wrong direction and we fall into the deepness of the abyss. But God tells us:  stop; change your course; seek the way of my star.

Prayer: Our God, help us to follow the new life that Jesus came to offer us when he was born in Bethlehem.  Help us to be able to understand your signals.  Forgive us when we get detoured off your paths in order to continue imprisoned by our preconceptions. We want to be not only listeners but also doers of your Word.

Tuesday, December 9 HOPE IN THE LIVING GOD ROMANS 15: 7-13

Tuesday, December 9

HOPE IN THE LIVING GOD
                                                                                               Romans 15: 7-13
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace...”
  Romans 15:13

The Hebrew people have different words to describe hope. One of these is a place of refuge where one can find shelter and protection from a storm, and not suffer from it. Another word suggests that hope and patience are indispensable.  In Hebrew, hope is both a noun and a verb.  It is a virtue which relies on God’s promises, and an action that revitalizes those who seek God.

The lives we lead are often quite difficult.  The reality of sin around us and in our world makes us believe that all is lost.  At times we are afraid of what could happen in the future.  But hope in the living God refuses to admit defeat.  Even in the most difficult situations there exist new opportunities, new life.  Christians cling to hope.  Bad things pass, as do storms, and what belongs to God is preserved.

Prayer: We wish to cling to your promises and to live a new life, in harmony with you, God of hope.

LA ESPERANZA EN EL DIOS QUE VIVE
                                                                                               Romanos 15: 7-13

Monday, December 8 OH, CHRISTMAS TREE! PHILIPPIANS 4:4-7

Monday, December 8
Anniversary of the Presbyterian Reformed Church in Havana
Celebration of the Dependent Church El Copey (Placetas)

OH, CHRISTMAS TREE!

PHILIPPIANS 4:4-7
“When Jesus spoke again to the people,
he said ‘I am the light of the world.
Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness,
but will have the light of life.’”

John 8:12
Thirty years ago it was difficult to find a Cuban home with a Christmas tree, and in a public space, it was unthinkable.  Today there are Christmas trees all over our city; lights and decorations everywhere…
While contemplating this I sat down by myself inside the church sanctuary to admire the lights on the Christmas tree, grateful because Jesus is truly the light of my life.  He illumines my life and blesses me with his loving company.
Looking at the star atop the Christmas tree, I acknowledge and reaffirm that Jesus is the true reason for Christmas.  Jesus is the star in my life.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for being with us, for caring and providing for us and for guiding us each day.  Thank you for the gift of knowing you and of having you as part of our lives.  Thank you, because just as your star led the wise men to find you, you continue to light the way and guide us on your pathways.  Amen.

¡OH, ÁRBOL DE LA NAVIDAD!

FILIPENSES  4:4-7
