Thursday, October 6 LET’S TALK ABOUT BEGINNINGS LUKE 14:28-30

Anniversary of the “Lutgarda Rodríguez” Church (Calabazar de Saguá)

LET’S TALK ABOUT BEGINNINGS

LuKE 14:28-30

Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it?

Luke 14:28

At many times in our lives we begin processes that may or may not be completed. Yes, because in order to finish what we have started, what we have decided to do, is not an easy thing. Many situations can come between our present reality and our dreams and aspirations. As people of faith, our focus, at the start of any new challenge in life, should always be centered on God as light and guide. Fear of what will happen, apathy to risks and despair are some of the stumbling blocks that interrupt the goals in our lives.

In order for Jesus to begin something new implied envisioning the end of the process.  So the parable that we have read about the responsible construction of the tower without lacking any of the necessary building materials, implies that our actions should be prudently planned ahead. But it also teaches us to be attentive to the consequences of what we propose to do.

Let us build towers in our lives from which we can take care of our values, family, community, church…and above all let us have the assurance that God has been and will be with us from start to finish.

Prayer: Oh God of life, allow us to acknowledge your presence in every minute of our existence. We ask you to give us the necessary responsibility and discernment in order to draw up goals for ourselves that are in accordance with your will and not our own. Amen.

Aniversario de la Iglesia “Lutgarda Rodríguez” (Calabazar de Sagua)

Hablemos de comienzos

Lucas 14:28-30

Wednesday, October 5 CELEBRATE CHRIST EPHESIANS 5:15-20

Wednesday, October 5

Anniversary of the Cuban Presbyterian Reformed Church “Prince of Peace” (Caibarién)

CELEBRATE CHRIST
EPHESIANS 5:15-20

Encourage one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music to the Lord in your heart…
Ephesians 5:19

Since ancient times, humans have used music as a means of experiencing happiness, pleasure, new inspirations.  For us Christians, music is a divine gift that allows us to praise, express our faith and the gratitude we feel for having a faithful God.

It is a great challenge to be able to celebrate Christ in any festive space where we gather. It’s not only a matter of singing beautiful songs, rather of celebrating Christ through our testimony. Today’s invitation is to offer worship to our God, because he is worthy of all honor, of all Glory, and of all our praise.

Let us therefore set aside resentments, sorrows and problems, because He seeks hearts filled with praise, that worship Him at all times and in all places. Therefore, he who has hands, let him lift them up to the heavens; he who has a voice, let him lift it and if you have brought a heart to praise God, don’t keep it to yourself, rather place it on the altar so that all the people of God can then: Celebrate Christ!

And when you leave church, remember that the worship service continues and that your entire life should be a song of praise.

Prayer: We want to praise you, oh God, at this time with canticles that rise out of grateful hearts, but that are also a faithful witness to your commandments. We wish to celebrate Christ. Amen.

CELEBRAD A CRISTO
EFESIOS 5:15-20

Queremos celebrar a Cristo. Amén

Tuesday, October 4 LET US EXPERIENCE THAT BROTHERLY LOVE 1 PETER 1:13-23

Tuesday, October 4

LET US EXPERIENCE THAT BROTHERLY LOVE

1 PETER 1:13-23
...love one another deeply, from the heart.

1 Peter 1:22

We’ve been hosting a young female volunteer worker from Germany in our home for several months. It is always a challenge to host people in one’s house; many concerns arise with respect to relationships, food, the hosting conditions and terms, etc. But what a blessing it is when we can get to know and share our lives with people who devote part of their lives to experience our reality, to collaborate in our projects and programs without any interests other than solidarity. It is certain that God’s blessings have been overabundant throughout the period of this exchange.  We were able to count on an attentive listener in our volunteer worker. The mutual understanding and adaptation amid the rigors of living under the same roof were marked by scarcities and by the suffocating heat. She always had a smile on her face.

And what can I say about her “cubanadas?” She learned to make guava marmalade, rice and beans, tamales…and we were able to enjoy exquisite recipes of German desserts, adapted using whatever ingredients were at hand.  We enjoyed her musical gifts during the worship services; our boys and girls had a talented, sweet, understanding and firm Sunday school teacher; and our elderly found in her a sensitive and devoted companion. All told, this is what I call a true experience of missionary work.  Even though she is no longer here, her prints have stayed with us, because we certainly feel that she is a close part of our family.

What if this experience served as an inspiration to us and we practiced this solidarity with our neighbors, and our brothers and sisters in our churches? As was our volunteer, let open ourselves up to others; let us allow ourselves to be surprised by their life stories and experiences; let us share gifts and knowledge with our neighbor and with a stranger.  Let us show sensitivity and solidarity; let us leave behind positive prints in the lives of others.  Let us experience that brotherly love!

Prayer: Oh good and gracious God, allow us to share this love that you make grow within us, once we have met you and have decided to follow you.

VIVAMOS ESE AMOR FRATERNAL

1 PEDRO  1: 13-23

Monday, October 3 EACH DAY PSALM 100

Monday, October 3

EACH DAY

PSALM 100

Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens!

Psalm 68:19

When I was a girl I anticipated birthdays with great hopes. I knew that my parents would always have a surprise for me.  But when I grew into an adult, my perspective changed.  The day of my birthday became a day just like every other day, with work, responsibilities, and without much time for surprises.

And then on one of my birthdays during my devotions, I came across this biblical verse that I wish to share with you today, and it made me reflect upon the importance of living a thankful life. We shouldn’t let a day go by without welcoming and celebrating God’s blessings. Our birthday especially should be a day of showing our gratefulness for the life that God has given us: our family, our friends, our church and so many other gifts.

I’ve never allowed another birthday to pass by without acknowledging my gratitude to God; gathering together with my family and friends, sharing a delicious meal, singing and exchanging the affections of my loved ones. I invite you today and every day to be able to say alongside me: Thank you, God, for my life and for that of my family. Thank you for the calling that you have given me to share my gifts and to participate in your Work.

Prayer: We give you thanks, oh God, for the blessings of each day.  Grant that we may celebrate the life that you have given us and that we not lose the ability to be joyful even in the midst of our daily challenges. Amen.

CADA DÍA

SALMO 100

¡Bendito sea el Señor! ¡Cada día nos colma de beneficios

el Dios de nuestra salvación!

Salmo 68:19

Sunday, October 2 World Communion Sunday World Fellowship 1 JOHN 1:5-10

Sunday, October 2

World Communion Sunday

World Fellowship

 1 JOHN 1:5-10

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another

1 John 1.7a

I propose that we reflect upon the celebration of the Day of World Communion.  It is celebrated the first Sunday in October, and it is one of the most important celebrations of the Universal Church. The Lord’s Supper and baptism are the two sacraments celebrated by the majority of Protestant churches, because they were ordained by Jesus.

The term Communion refers to our intimacy with God and to our fellowship with one another, when we share the elements of bread and wine around a table. It is also known as ‘Eucharist’ (from the Greek, “action of giving thanks”), which refers to the enjoyment of a celebration.

From the beginnings of the Church, the Lord’s Supper has been celebrated regularly.  The people would bring their bread and their wine from home to share at the Lord’s Table. The Scriptures were read and the gospel was proclaimed. Preaching presents the Word of God in Jesus Christ, the same person who, as John Calvin said, was actually present in the breaking of the bread and in the shared drinking of the wine. The elements of bread and wine are common elements. There is nothing neither special nor magical in them. What makes them special and relevant is that the people of God recognize them as a steadfastness of self-devotion to God’s love in Jesus Christ. In the act of breaking bread, and of pouring wine, and of sharing, Christ makes himself present.

By participating in the Lord’s Supper, the worshippers become co-participants in the history of God’s salvation. What took place many years ago becomes today’s reality, in the same way that the resurrected Christ’s presence is in the sacrament today in order to redeem the people of God, who are scattered all over the world, and equally includes all human beings.

Prayer: Today we once again become participants in your body and your blood. Inspire our lives in the grace of your Holy Spirit so that we may be faithful examples of you, our Jesus. Amen.

Domingo de Comunión Mundial

LA COMUNIÓN MUNDIAL

1 JUAN 1:5-10

Saturday, October 1 LET US CARE FOR OUR ELDERLY

Saturday, October 1

70th Anniversary of the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Matanzas

Day of the Elderly in Cuba

LET US CARE FOR OUR ELDERLY

PSALM 71: 17-21

…gray hair the splendor of the old.

Proverbs 20:29b

The life of the elderly has become a topic of serious concern in Cuban society. We know that there is a progressive increase in the aging of the general population. The causes are dissimilar: an increase in life expectancy, a low number of births, the emigration of the workforce-aged population, etc. But even with our Ministry of Health implementing programs to care for this group of people, and with churches also undertaking aide projects, if we look around ourselves we can see that there is an increasing number of elderly who live alone and are ill.

In biblical times, the elderly were greatly respected and honored. The faces of the elderly are marked by their experience, their joys and pain. Let us remember the sacrifices they have made on our behalf. May we reflect today upon the respect and care that these people deserve, those whom God has granted many years of life, so that our acts of help are accompanied by all of the affection that they deserve.  I invite you to pray for these elderly persons and also for our Evangelical Theological Seminary, our old formative institution which celebrates its anniversary today and which maintains its freshness and maturity.

Prayer: Beloved Heavenly Father we pray today for your protection on behalf of our elderly, that you will keep them safe at every moment with your cloak of love and care. We equally give you thanks for our seminary, for the glorious witness of your work that has been forged in this institution year after year. Thank you for its workers and we ask for your continued blessings upon them.  Amen.

Aniversario  70  del Seminario Evangélico de Teología de Matanzas

Día de la ancianidad en Cuba

CUIDEMOS A NUESTROS ANCIANOS

SALMO 71: 17-21

Introduction to October~November~December 2016 Issue of Su Voz

Introduction

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ

With the grace of our Lord, today we have the opportunity to deliver another trimester of the Devotional “His Voice” to you.

It is very gratifying to hear the inspired testimony of hundreds of people who have felt spiritually nourished through reading “Su Voz”. It has opened horizons of reassurance and confidence in God’s daily actions in their lives.

Without any doubt, we have noticed a considerable increase in the use of this instrument for the cultivation of the Christian life, especially for believers such as those suffering from illness, and the elderly, and for those who are unable to attend worship services at church.

We know, however, that there remains much to be done in order for our Devotional to achieve its objective: to be spiritual nourishment for believers.

The growth in our lives in Christ does not develop solely in the church pews.  “His Voice” is effective for feeling the Holy Spirit’s presence on a daily basis in a Christian life of deep testimony and faith.
