I propose that we reflect upon the celebration of the Day of World Communion.  It is celebrated the first Sunday in October, and it is one of the most important celebrations of the Universal Church. The Lord’s Supper and baptism are the two sacraments celebrated by the majority of Protestant churches, because they were ordained by Jesus.

 

The term Communion refers to our intimacy with God and to our fellowship with one another, when we share the elements of bread and wine around a table. It is also known as ‘Eucharist’ (from the Greek, “action of giving thanks”), which refers to the enjoyment of a celebration.

 

From the beginnings of the Church, the Lord’s Supper has been celebrated regularly.  The people would bring their bread and their wine from home to share at the Lord’s Table. The Scriptures were read and the gospel was proclaimed. Preaching presents the Word of God in Jesus Christ, the same person who, as John Calvin said, was actually present in the breaking of the bread and in the shared drinking of the wine. The elements of bread and wine are common elements. There is nothing neither special nor magical in them. What makes them special and relevant is that the people of God recognize them as a steadfastness of self-devotion to God’s love in Jesus Christ. In the act of breaking bread, and of pouring wine, and of sharing, Christ makes himself present.

 

By participating in the Lord’s Supper, the worshippers become co-participants in the history of God’s salvation. What took place many years ago becomes today’s reality, in the same way that the resurrected Christ’s presence is in the sacrament today in order to redeem the people of God, who are scattered all over the world, and equally includes all human beings.

 

 

Prayer: Today we once again become participants in your body and your blood. Inspire our lives in the grace of your Holy Spirit so that we may be faithful examples of you, our Jesus. Amen.

LA COMUNIÓN MUNDIAL

1 JUAN 1:5-10

Pero si andamos en luz, como él está en la luz,

tenemos comunión unos con otros

Les propongo que reflexionemos sobre esta celebración: el Día de Comunión Mundial. Se celebra el primer domingo de octubre, la cual es una de las festividades más importantes de la Iglesia Universal. La cena del Señor y el bautismo  son los dos sacramentos celebrados por la mayoría de las iglesias protestantes, porque fueron ordenados por Jesús.

El término Comunión se refiere a nuestra intimidad con Dios y a nuestra confraternidad de los unos con los otros, cuando compartimos los elementos de pan y vino, alrededor de la mesa. También se conoce como 'Eucaristía' (del idioma griego, "acción de gracias"), que se refiere al gozo de la celebración.

Desde el comienzo de la iglesia, la cena del Señor se celebraba regularmente. El pueblo traía su pan y su vino de las casas para compartir en la mesa del Señor. Las Escrituras se leían y el evangelio era proclamado. La predicación presenta la Palabra de Dios en Jesucristo, la misma persona que -al decir de Juan Calvino- estaba realmente presente en el rompimiento del pan y en el compartir del vino.

Los elementos del pan y del vino son elementos comunes. No existe nada de especial ni mágico en ellos. Lo que los hacen especiales y de relevancia es que el pueblo de Dios los reconoce como constancia de la auto entrega del amor de Dios en Jesucristo. En los actos del rompimiento del pan, del vertimiento del vino, y del compartir, Cristo se hace presente.

Participando en la cena del Señor los/as adoradores/as se hacen copartícipes de la historia de la salvación de Dios. Lo que ocurrió hace muchos años, se hace realidad hoy, de la misma forma que está presente hoy el Cristo resucitado en el sacramento para redimir al pueblo de Dios, que está esparcido por todo el mundo y que incluye a todos los seres humanos por igual.

 

Oración: Hoy participamos una vez más de tu cuerpo y tu sangre. Inspira nuestras vidas en la gracia de tu Santo Espíritu para que seamos fieles ejemplos tuyos, Jesús nuestro. Amén.
