Wednesday, December 21 OUR APPOINTMENT WITH THE LORD PSALM 63

Wednesday, December 21
OUR APPOINTMENT WITH THE LORD
PSALM 63

Now during those days he (Jesus) went out to the mountain to pray;
and he spent the night in prayer to God.

Luke 6:12

Prayer is a fundamental activity in our Christian life. It is the communication which we establish with God in order to pray to God, to present God with our needs, and to give thanks to God. To have communication with the sovereign God, who is at the same time the God of love, is the highest privilege for which a human being can hope.

Other activities will be results of how we conduct our prayer life. We believe our spiritual life is fine because of the other things that we carry out, but it is easier to preach than to pray, easier to help our neighbor than to pray. I say this because it’s true.

Let’s appreciate those moments of privilege in God’s company, and let’s not fail to show up for God’s call to be connected to him. It could be at any time or place, mornings, afternoons, evenings . . . .  The important thing to recognize is that prayer time each day is sacred and inviolable, and that in it we receive the strength and the wisdom necessary to fulfill our tasks during the course of the day.

Prayer: Forgive us, God, for the speed with which we run our lives, without setting aside even one minute to be in communion with you. May this Advent time allow us to learn the need to dedicate some sincere time to you each day.  Amen.

NUESTRAS CITAS CON EL SEÑOR
SALMO 63

Tuesday, December 20 EACH DAY HAS ENOUGH TROUBLE OF ITS OWN MATTHEW 6:31-33

Tuesday, December 20
EACH DAY HAS ENOUGH TROUBLE OF ITS OWN
MATTHEW 6:31-33

But seek first his kingdom and righteousness,
and all these things will be given to you as well.

Matthew 6:33

Worry is an offense to God. Anxiety and preoccupation dishonor God. If my son were to continually doubt my love, doubt my desires for his welfare and my willing disposal to giving him the best I can, surely I would be greatly saddened.
Worry also harms us, destroys peace, and produces impatience and complaints. Many people are always anxious with respect to difficulties that can occur, and most of them are unfounded. As our Cuban refrain goes, “[They’re] putting the cart in front of the mule.” At times we want God to smooth the obstacles in advance, but He promised to do so a step at a time. The only thing that belongs to us is this present moment; and the way to live well is to live the present hour.

Sufficient for the day is its own troubles. If we learned this lesson we would be spared many worries. Christ promised us his presence until the end of the world. May we place our weak hand in his. Let us trust; he continues to lead us in safety until the journey’s end.

Prayer: We ask for your forgiveness, Lord, for the many times that we worry, become distraught and lose hope. Help us to learn to trust more in you. Amen.

BASTA A CADA DÍA SU PROPIO AFÁN
MATEO 63: 31-33

Monday, December 19 NOW IS THE TIME LUKE 3:1-6

Monday, December 19
NOW IS THE TIME
LUKE 3:1-6

As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,
“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.”

Luke 3:4

Advent is very brief, and in the blink of an eye we find ourselves at Christmas. The evangelist Luke frames the scene chronologically and historically. He does it from the universal and political perspective (the Roman Empire and diverse local governments), as well as from the religious (The High Priest of the temple in Jerusalem). The figure of John the Baptist is essential in this time of Advent. He invites us to “Prepare the way of the Lord” although he runs the risk of being insignificant and ignored: one who is only “a voice crying in the wilderness”.

In general, we all believe ourselves to be good people, and think conversion is only for the great sinners. Nevertheless, it’s no less clear that yes, we all need to convert daily. To convert means to “return to God, amend attitudes and behavior.”   In our lives there is acrimony, evil ways, bad character; we are frequently turned and twisted; on occasion we demonstrate a lack of clarity, or arrogance, or we feel superior to others.  That’s why we need to convert, so that when Christ comes he will find us with a soul cleansed by grace and a willing heart. That way Christmas will no longer be just another party or a beautiful religious folklore, but will acquire its true sense in our lives, not in a superficial manner, but in a profound way.

Prayer:  Lord of Advent, give me the strength to surrender my heart to you today. And help me to joyfully await the birth of your Son, our Savior. Amen.

AHORA ES EL TIEMPO
LUCAS 3:1-6

Sunday, December 18 IN THE ARMS OF YOUR FATHER LUKE 1:26-38

Sunday, December 18
IN THE ARMS OF YOUR FATHER
LUKE 1:26-38

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered, “May your word to me be fulfilled.”

Luke1:38a

Anita was sleeping when night fell; she awoke with a strange sensation of gasping – a thick smoke had filled her room. She hurried toward the door, but the staircase was on fire. She opened the window and leaned out; some friends below noticed her; one drew closer and shouted to her, “Jump, sweetie! I’ll catch you!” But it was impossible, she was afraid; she was only four years old and it was too high for her.

At that moment she heard a familiar voice shouting to her, “Anita, dearest, I’ll catch you in my arms – jump now.” It was her father; she could trust him. Then she flung herself toward the void. A few second later she was safe in his arms.

This is faith: in our case, a total trust in God who is always ready to save us. Faith is not jumping into the void, it’s throwing oneself into the arms of a Father who loves and knows us and calls us by name. That was the same faith the impelled Maria to welcome God’s plan with composure and bravery. Being a young woman, she was surprised by an angel who made her a participant in a great responsibility: to welcome into her womb the son of God. Her faith helped her to give the adequate reply; she unreservedly threw herself into her Father’s arms.

Prayer:  Thank you, my Father for supporting me in your hands. There I feel safe and trusting.

EN LOS BRAZOS DE SU PADRE
LUCAS 1:26-38

Lucas1:38a

Yo te voy a sostener”.

Allí me siento segura y confiada. Amén.

Saturday, December 17 THE LORD, MY GUEST REVELATION 3:20

Saturday, December 17
THE LORD, MY GUEST
REVELATION 3:20

Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching.
My Father will love them,
and we will come to them and make our home with them.

John 14:23

Have you opened the door of your heart to the Lord? What place do you allow him in your life? Is he someone you meet only on Sundays at church? Is he the friend who is invited when in need of counsel, but is forgotten when things go well? Do you approach him only out of routine each morning, before eating and sleeping?  Or is it as He wishes: a perpetual      friend with whom we share joys, problems, pains, and failures?
There may even be one or more bedrooms in your house whose key you guard so that He is denied entry to them and cannot discover your hidden thoughts. Or do you perhaps hide the key so as not to have to confess the selfish handling of your money?

If you love Jesus you should rejoice, opening your house to him, and working in a manner pleasing to Him.

Prayer:  My life, my heart, and my house are open to you. Enter them and govern them. Amen.

EL SEÑOR MI INVITADO
APOCALIPSIS 3:20

Friday, December 16 WHAT DO YOU NEED? JOHN 6:1-40

Friday, December 16
WHAT DO YOU NEED?
JOHN 6:1-40

Whoever comes to me will never go hungry…
John 6:35

Each person will answer the question that serves as the title of our meditation in a different manner. Some need health, others a stable job, a home, a spouse’s love, their children’s success, a better economy, spaces of spiritual growth or recreation, etc. The replies will vary according to personal expectations or family concerns.
We can feel overwhelmed by problems and conflicts each day, and we don’t know how to respond to them. We can resolve some, others unfortunately we cannot. Far beyond all those problems exists an imperious need, which upon being satisfied, will bring peace and tranquility to our hearts.
One glance of faith toward Jesus and an intimate relationship with Him is sufficient to know true spiritual peace, even when beset by storms. This doesn’t mean that our crisis situations will resolve in a minute, but that from that moment on they will be in the hands of the one who will resolve them in his own way and time.
When you get up each day ask yourself what you need; go to God, our living water and quench your thirst.

Prayer:  Lord, today I want my fundamental need to be to find you. Open my mind and heart to be more conscious of your presence. Amen.

Translated by John Walter

¿QUÉ NECESITA USTED?
JUAN 6: 1-40

Thursday, December 15 GIVE ME WHATEVER YOU WANT PROVERBS 3: 21-27

Thursday, December 15
GIVE ME WHATEver you want
Proverbs 3: 21-27

Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due
when it is in your power to act.
Proverbs 3:27

I hope that not all places in Cuba are the same, but where I live many people have forgotten the meaning of “doing a favor.” I know that since the 90s we began to live with contradictory situations in Cuba. On the one hand there was the solidarity which enabled us to live; and at the same time there were cases which popularized the phrase “The easy life died in the eighties”.  That phrase illustrated a new way to relate, of a time based upon one sort or another of economic self-interest.

What’s certain is that now, especially in the cases in which someone is resolving a problem for you, it is becoming increasingly common for them to later respond with “Give me whatever you want [in return.]”  And it is harder and harder to hear “You’re welcome; your thanks is enough.”

Today God invites us to practice friendliness and solidarity, to offer our services altruistically if it’s in our power to do so. Leave ulterior motives and convenience aside. Treat others with the same love with which you’d like to be treated yourself.

Prayer:  Our God, help us this Advent to renew our commitments to you. We want to love as you love us. Let our hands always be extended in solidarity and support for others. In Jesus’ name, whom we always hope will erupt in our lives. Amen.

Dame lo que tú quieras
Proverbios 3: 21-27
