Dear Reader:

As translators, we are called to do that task without comment on the text at hand. At times, we may feel uncomfortable with a text, but it is not our text. The post for January 29 was one such text. The reason for this comment is that subsequently we received a communication from Liudmila Hernandez Retureta, Pastor of First Church, Havana and Vice-Moderator of the Synod of the Presbyterian-Reformed Church in Cuba. She also posted it in the Chat space for Cuban Pastors on WhatsApp. We feel strongly that she would want all of the readers of this blog to know what the position of the Presbyterian-Reformed Church in Cuba is.

Her words follow:


Due to an irregularity in the editorial revision process, a meditation based on the text of Genesis 19.1-29, with an evident homophobic accent, appeared in the published devotional "Su Voz" on January 29, 2021.

Our Church respects the freedom we can have as persons in relation to sexuality. We are an inclusive Church, as expressed in our Form of Government, which is to be an open and inclusive community that responds to human diversity both within it and in which it is exercising its ministry (G-1. 0100. d). Consistent with our Reformed tradition, we do not make literalist readings of Scripture and much less call for certain exclusionary and discriminatory positions to be assumed on the basis of these readings.

As the Presbyterian-Reformed Church in Cuba (IPRC) we extend our apologies for the January 29th devotion which does not reflect the sentiments of our Church.

THE REIGN OF JESUS CHRIST

Psalm  2

Serve the Lord reverently -- trembling.

Psalm 2:11(CEB)

            In Acts 5:38-39 we read, “And now I say to you: leave these men alone, Let them go. For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it shall fail.  But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.”

            You can resign yourself with reverence knowing that the King of all the world is holy and just. If you are innocent, you will be freed, if you are guilty, God will have mercy if you ask Him for forgiveness through the blood of Christ.

            This means that one day each person will recognize Jesus Christ as Lord and enter his presence, others will recognize Him as a judge of heaven and earth. God’s judgment will be just -- what awaits you? Judgment for blessing or curse? There’s still time for you to settle your accounts with God. Give your life to Christ so that He may also rule in your life.

            God’s character is always the same, not good one day and bad the next. Those who rebel against Him do so because they do not know Him, or because they refuse to surrender to His authority. God’s standards are set for the good of his Kingdom.

            God’s laws reveal his character, love, holiness, and power. Jesus Christ has shown through his life and death that He is worthy to receive power and authority. Christ does not abuse his power or mistreat his servants, but cares about them, cares for them, and protects them. Christ requires from you the same thing his Father requires of Him: obedience and submission to His will.

            Remember that all people, including kings and those in positions of authority, are subject to God. Put your trust in Jesus Christ, the Son of God who reigns, and you will be blessed.

 

Prayer: Permit it Lord that we be always obedient and submissive to your will. Amen,

El reinado de Jesucristo

Salmo 2

Servid a Jehováá con temor, y alegraos con temblor

Salmo 2:11

            En Hechos 5:38-39, leemos: Y ahora os digo: Apartaos de estos hombres y dejadlos, porque si este consejo o esta obra es de los hombres, se desvanecerá; pero si es de Dios, no la podréis destruir; no seáis tal vez hallados luchando contra Dios.

            Puedes resignarte con reverencia sabiendo que el Rey de todo el mundo es santo y justo. Si eres inocente, serás liberado, si eres culpable, Dios tendrá misericordia si le pides perdón mediante la sangre de Cristo.

            Eso significa que un día cada persona reconocerá a Jesucristo como Señor y entrará  a su presencia, otros lo reconocerán como Juez del cielo y de la tierra. El juicio de Dios será justo, ¿qué te espera? ¿Juicio para bendición o maldición? Todavía hay tiempo para que arregles tus cuentas con Dios. Entrega tu vida a Cristo para que Él gobierne también en tu vida.

            El carácter de Dios es siempre igual, no es bueno un día y malo al siguiente. Los que se rebelan contra Él lo hacen porque no lo conocen, o porque se niegan a rendirse a su autoridad. Las normas de Dios son puestas para el bien de su Reino. Las leyes de Dios revelan su carácter, amor, santidad y poder. Jesucristo ha demostrado por medio de su vida y su muerte, que es digno de recibir el poder y la autoridad. Cristo no abusa de su poder ni maltrata a sus siervos, sino que se preocupa por ellos, los cuida y los protege. Cristo requiere de ti lo mismo que su Padre requiere de Él: obediencia y sumisión a su voluntad.

            Recuerda que todas las personas, incluso los reyes y los que ocupan posiciones de autoridad, están sujetos a Dios. Pon tu confianza en Jesucristo, el Hijo de Dios que reina, y serás bendecido.

 

Oración: Permite Señor que siempre seamos obedientes y sumisos a tu voluntad. Amén.

Benefits of Trust

Psalm 40:4

Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord

Psalm 40:4(NIV)

            Your loved ones may want to see you free from a serious problem, but they may lack the power or the wisdom and knowledge to deliver you. However, God can find an answer. He knows what the solution is and has the power to carry it out.

            An elderly and wise gospel minister once said, “God never works too quickly or slowly, but his answers always come on time.” Remember that you can trust God for any need you have. There’s a price to pay for that companionship. The price of this loving and liberated relationship is obedience to the Word of God and his will.

            God never wanted a form of sacrifice, but a sincere conviction in the heart and soul of the sacrificer. Doing God’s will with all your heart is more pleasing than sacrifice.

            Those who have learned to trust in God can soar like the eagle when the strong winds of trouble come into their lives. When you lose your job, when you have family problems, when there are incurable illnesses, when a friend dies, or when a friend betrays you, you can trust God.  When the winds of trouble blow very strongly, don’t let fear paralyze you. You can trust God. He will deliver you from your fears. Trust in the power and protection of God; look for it, He will give you what you need.

 

Prayer: Lord my God, strengthen our confidence in you more and more each day. Amen.

Beneficios de la confianza

Salmo 40:4

Bienaventurado el hombre que puso en Jehová su confianza

Salmo 40:4

            Tus seres queridos pueden desear verte libre de un problema serio, pero pueden carecer del poder para hacerlo, o de la sabiduría y del conocimiento para librarte. Sin embargo, en Dios puedes encontrar una respuesta. Él sabe cuál es la solución y tiene el poder para llevarla a cabo.

            Un ministro del evangelio, sabio y de avanzada, edad dijo en una ocasión: “Dios nunca obra con demasiada rapidez o lentitud, pero sus respuestas siempre llegan a tiempo”. Recuerda que puedes confiar en Dios para cualquier necesidad que tengas. Hay un precio que pagar por ese compañerismo. El precio de esta relación amorosa y que libera, es obediencia a la Palabra de Dios y a su voluntad.

            Dios nunca quiso una forma de sacrificio, sino una sincera convicción en el corazón y en el alma del que sacrifica. Hacer la voluntad de Dios con todo el corazón es más agradable que el sacrificio.

            Los que han aprendido a confiar en Dios pueden remontarse como el águila cuando los vientos fuertes de los problemas vienen a su vida. Cuando pierdes tu trabajo, cuando tienes problemas familiares, cuando hay enfermedades incurables, cuando algún amigo muere o cuando algún amigo te traiciona, puedes confiar en Dios. Cuando los vientos de los problemas soplan muy fuerte, no permitas que el temor te paralice. Puedes confiar en Dios. Él te librará de tus temores. Confía en el poder y la protección de Dios, búscalo, Él te dará lo que necesites.

 

Oración: Señor mi Dios, fortalece cada día más nuestra confianza en ti. Amén.

 

 

 

February 1, MONDAY

WHAT TO DO WHEN WE ARE AFRAID

Numbers 13:27-31

But the men who went up with him said, “We can’t go up against the people because they are stronger than we.”

            Covered by the Lord, the Israelites finally camped at the limits of Canaan after long travels through the desert. They only waited for the time to enter the promised land and were aware that God had not abandoned them on their journey through the wilderness for a single day and that He had provided them with everything they needed.  Then the Lord commanded Moses to choose twelve men he trusted to spy on the land to be conquered. After forty days, the spies returned from their mission and everyone came together to hear their report. Ten of them presented a negative and threatening view of the people who inhabited the land. Only Joshua and Caleb encouraged the people not to forget what God had done for them; encouraging them to move forward and conquer the promised land. The eyes of the people turned to the difficulties and not to God's promises. They forgot the Lord’s faithfulness and were afraid.

            Fear is a human feeling, normal and common. When it dominates us, we get paralyzed. Violence is a feature of today’s society; insecurity and instability make us afraid. But we have to learn how to handle that feeling so it doesn’t ruin our lives. In what way? Turn to the Lord who has all the power in his hands. Look to God.  Remember everything he did for you. Depend on Him; call him before and after victory. He will strengthen you.

 

Prayer: God of victory, help us not be afraid. I know that you will always strengthen me. Amen.

¿QUE HACER CUANDO SENTIMOS MIEDO?

Numeros 13:27-31

Mas los varones que subieron con él dijeron: No podremos subir contra aquel pueblo, porque es más fuerte que nosotros

Números 13:31

            Amparados por el Señor finalmente los israelitas acamparon en los límites de Canaán, luego de una larga peregrinación por el desierto. Sólo esperaban el momento de entrar en la tierra prometida y tenían conciencia de que Dios no los había abandonado ni un solo día en su jornada por el desierto y de que los había provisto de todo lo que necesitaban. Entonces el Señor ordenó que Moisés eligiese doce hombres de su confianza para espiar la tierra a ser conquistada. Después de cuarenta días, los espías regresaron de su misión, y todos se reunieron para escuchar su informe. Diez desde ellos presentaron una visión negativa y amenazadora sobre el pueblo que habitaba la tierra. Solo Josué y Caleb incitaron al pueblo a no olvidar lo que Dios había hecho por ellos, animándolos a avanzar y a conquistar la tierra prometida. Los ojos del pueblo se volvieron hacia las dificultades y no hacia las promesas de Dios. Olvidaron la fidelidad del Señor y sintieron miedo.

            El miedo es un sentimiento humano, normal y común. Cuando nos domina, nos paralizamos. La violencia es una característica de la sociedad actual; la inseguridad y la inestabilidad nos causan miedo. Pero debemos aprender a manejar ese sentimiento para que no nos arruine la vida. ¿De qué manera? Recurriendo al Señor que tiene todo el poder en sus manos. Busque a Dios. Recuerde todo lo que hizo por usted. Dependa de Él, alábelo antes de la victoria y después de ella. ÉÉl lo fortalecerá.

 

Oración: Dios de la victoria, ayúdanos a no tener miedo. Yo sé que tú siempre me fortalecerás. Amén.
