JANUARY 3

IN THE STYLE OF GOD

Luke 6:32-35

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor my ways are your ways, says the Lord.

Isaiah 55:8 (NRSV)

This world has a style, that of force, abuse, trampling, marginalization, disappointment. Those Jews in Babylon believed in such a world. Then that unknown spoilsport prophet once again was out of tune with that thought: my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor my ways are your ways. What a disappointment! The ways of the world are not God’s ways.

God has a different style; if humans want to understand, they have to overcome their perspective, the little perspective from ground level, to enter into God’s horizon and thus understand the ideas and manners of divine acts. Otherwise he will be left without a horizon, he will be locked in his own limits, and force, abuse, trampling, marginalization and disappointment will surround him forever.

You have to enter into God's style even if for this world it is a naive and losing style, because Jesus said that the one who loses wins. He came to bring the same style that that unknown killjoy prophet brought to the exiled Jews of Babylon: that style that still today can save this world, the style of solidarity, of love, of loyalty, of unselfishness. As Luther said, the style of this world is self-centered, God’s style is other centered.

 

Prayer: Lord, I ask that you may always guide me on the path that you desire me to follow. Amen.

ENERO 3

AL ESTILO DE DIOS

Lucas 6:32-35

Porque mis ideas no son como la de ustedes, y mi manera de actuar no es como la suya

Isaías 55:8

Este mundo tiene un estilo, el de la fuerza, el atropello, el pisoteo, la marginación, el desengaño. Aquellos judíos de Babilonia creían en el estilo del mundo. Y entonces el desconocido profeta  aguafiestas vuelve a desentonar con aquel pensamiento: mis ideas no son como la de ustedes, y mi manera de actuar no es como la suya. ¡Qué chasco! Los modos mundanos no son los de Dios.

Dios tiene otro estilo, si el ser humano quiere entender deberá superar su perspectiva, el pequeño horizonte al ras de la tierra, para entrar en el horizonte de Dios y así poder entender las ideas y la manera de actuar divinas. De otro modo se quedará sin horizonte, quedará encerrado en sus propios límites, y la fuerza, el atropello, el pisoteo, la marginación y el desengaño, lo cercarán para siempre.

Hay que entrar en el estilo de Dios aunque para este  mundo sea un estilo ingenuo y perdedor, porque el que pierde, gana, decía Jesús. Este vino a traer el mismo estilo que el desconocido profeta aguafiestas le indicó a los judíos desterrados de Babilonia. El estilo que todavía hoy puede salvar a este mundo, el estilo de la solidaridad, del amor, la lealtad, el desinterés. Como decía Lutero: El estilo de este mundo es autocéntrico, el estilo de Dios es excéntrico.

 

Oración: Señor, te pido, que me guíes siempre por el camino que quieres que yo siga. Amén.

JANUARY 2

STARTING WITH GOD

Proverbs 16:1-9

Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.

Proverbs 16:3 (NRSV)

At the beginning of this new year, we wish for peace, well-being, and happiness. Surely everyone also means to do everything in their power to make this happen, but it is not always clear by what criteria to do things and for whom to do them in order to make them meaningful and worthwhile.

Therefore, conversation with God is not an anesthetic to keep us passive, but an absolutely necessary element for sharpening our discernment, allowing us to differentiate between that which has value and that which has no value for the life of individuals and peoples.

By means of regular and ongoing prayer, we can trust God not only with our course but also with our daily acts. Conversation with our Lord Jesus Christ enables us to convert our plans into actions and works that  support a reconciled society, sign and symbol of God’s Kingdom among us.

 

Prayer: Father, thank you for this new year that is beginning. Be with us always. Amen.

ENERO 2

COMENZANDO CON  DIOS

Proverbios 16:1-9

Encomienda tus obras en las manos del Señor y tus planes se realizarán

Proverbios 16:3

Al comienzo de este  nuevo año, nos deseamos paz, bienestar, felicidad. Seguramente cada uno también se propone hacer cuanto esté a su alcance para que así sea. Pero no siempre queda claro con qué criterios hacer las cosas y para quién realizarlas a fin de que tengan un sentido que valga la pena.

Por eso, la conversación con Dios no es una anestesia para quedar pasivos, sino un elemento absolutamente necesario para afilar nuestra capacidad de discernimiento, que nos permita diferenciar entre lo que tiene y lo que no tiene valor para la vida de las personas y de los pueblos.

Por medio de la oración regular y permanente, no sólo podemos encomendar a Dios nuestro rumbo, sino también nuestras acciones diarias.

El diálogo con nuestro Señor Jesucristo nos capacita para que nuestros planes se conviertan en acciones y obras que ayuden a una sociedad reconciliada, signo y señal del Reino de Dios entre nosotros.

 

Oración: Gracias Padre, por este nuevo año que comienza. Acompáñanos siempre. Amén.

JANUARY 1

New Year

FACING A NEW YEAR

Philippians 3: 7-14

. . .forgetting what lies behind . . . I press on toward the goal for the prize

The month of January is named after Janus, the god of beginnings. He is symbolized by a man with two faces, one facing behind and the other ahead.

On this first day of January, there are people who have problems with looking ahead, because they continue to look backwards consumed by the errors of the past. Their outlook for the future is dimmed and their enthusiasm paralyzed. But there is no point in bemoaning what is lost. History will continue to repeat itself if we continue being depressed by the failures of the past year or continue to complain about the injustices suffered during the past twelve months. Nothing is gained by complaining about the past.

This first day of this new year, let us begin by confessing our sins to the Lord and accepting the forgiveness filled with the grace that Jesus offers to us. Let us correct what needs to be corrected; and then let’s forget what was left behind. Let’s pursue the goal with the hope and confidence placed in us by our Heavenly Father. This was Paul’s secret, and it worked. Let’s not have two faces like the Roman god of beginnings; much better, with forward looking vision, let’s launch ourselves ahead with hope and joy.

May you have a blessed new year!

 

Prayer: Father, thank you for the year that has passed. Help us to anticipate with hope and faithmthe days that lie ahead. Amen.

Año Nuevo

FRENTE A UN NUEVO AÑO 

Filipenses 3: 7-14

Olvidando  ciertamente lo que queda atrás… prosigo a la meta

Filipenses 3:13-14

El mes de enero recibe su nombre de Jano, el dios de los comienzos. Se le simboliza como un hombre con dos caras, una mirando atrás y la otra adelante.

En este primer día de enero hay quienes tienen problemas acerca de mirar adelante, porque siguen mirando atrás, ensimismados en los errores del pasado. Su perspectiva de futuro queda entenebrecida y su entusiasmo paralizado. Pero de nada vale lamentar  lo irrecuperable. La historia se irá repitiendo si nos mantenemos deprimidos por el fracaso del año que pasó, o continuamos quejándonos acerca de las injusticias sufridas durante los últimos doce meses transcurridos. No se gana nada lamentándose del  pasado.

Este primer día de este nuevo año, comencemos confesando nuestros pecados al Señor y aceptando el perdón llenos de la gracia que Jesús nos ofrece. Corrijamos lo que necesita corrección; y luego, olvidemos lo que atrás quedó. Prosigamos a la meta con la esperanza y confianza depositadas en nuestro Padre Celestial. Este era el secreto de Pablo, y funcionó. No tengamos “dos caras” como el dios romano de los comienzos; más bien, con la mirada al frente, lancémonos adelante con esperanza y gozo.

¡Qué tengas un bendito año nuevo!

Oración: Gracias Padre, por el año que pasó. Ayúdanos a mirar con esperanza y fe los días que vienen por delante. Amén.
