THE LORD STRENGTHENS

PSALM 27:1-5

“But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the lion’s mouth.”

2 Timothy 4:17

“A mighty fortress is our God, our protection and powerful sword,” we are told by Martin Luther’s famous hymn.  In moments of need and anguish, Paul felt the Lord at his side giving him strength.  The Lord strengthens his own in moments of testing.  There are certainly many occasions for which we need this kind of interior strength, produced by communion with God. Although our own strength is not enough to confront our daily problems, the Lord is by our side to strengthen and encourage us.

Let us meditate on this today and acknowledge that our weakness is made perfect in God’s strength.  Let us do God’s will and thus we will find his power and strength.

Prayer: Lord, help my weakness to be perfected in your power. Allow me to experience the security of your constant presence.  Free me from fear and lack of trust in your help. Amen.

EL SEÑOR FORTALECE

SALMO 27:1-5

“Pero el Señor estuvo a mi lado y me dio fuerzas, para que por mí fuera cumplida la predicación, y que todos los gentiles oyesen. Así fue librado de la boca del león”

2 Timoteo 4:17

“Castillo fuerte es nuestro Dios, defensa y buen escudo” nos dice el famoso himno de Martín Lutero. Pablo sintió que en momentos de necesidad y angustia, el Señor estuvo a su lado y le dio fuerzas. El Señor fortalece a los suyos en los momentos de prueba. Seguramente en muchas ocasiones necesitamos esta clase de fortaleza interior que produce la comunión con Dios, pues nuestras fuerzas no son suficientes para enfrentar los problemas cotidianos, sino las fuerzas del Señor que está a nuestro lado y nos alienta.

Meditemos hoy en esto y reconoceremos que nuestra debilidad se perfecciona en la fortaleza de Dios. Hagamos la voluntad de Dios y así encontraremos su poder y fortaleza.

Oración: Señor, permite que en mi debilidad tu poder se perfeccione. Que yo experimente la seguridad de tu presencia constante. Líbrame del temor y la falta de confianza en tu ayuda. Amén.

THE TRINITY OF PERFECTION

2 CORINTHIANS 13:11-13

“And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.”

Romans 5:5

A legendary story about Saint Augustine tells us that as he was walking along the beach trying to comprehend the mystery of the Trinity, he encountered a boy who wanted to pour all of the ocean’s waters into a hole that he had dug in the sand. Augustine told him that it was impossible and quickly understood that it was even more difficult to understand the mystery of the Trinity. 

The Trinity has become an issue of speculation for theologians, such that for the majority of Christians it is something that “floats among the clouds”. We need to “land” the Trinity and bring it back “down to earth” and to think about its significance for our faith.  The Trinity constitutes a life model for us.  Of first importance is its great unity, and that is what God asks for us to have between us.  It also gives us a social model.  The Father, the Son, and the Spirit work together as a team and that is how it should be in our communities:  each with its function, experiencing the charismas that God has given us.  This is the best way to experience the Trinity.

Prayer: Lord, help us to always remain in unity and to work together with one another. Allow us to seek our perfection, sharing the same sentiments and living in peace.  Amen.

LA TRINIDAD DE LA PERFECCIÓN

2 CORINTIOS 13:11-13

Cuenta una leyenda que San Agustín paseaba por la playa mientras intentaba comprender el misterio de la Trinidad, y se encontró con un niño que quería meter toda el agua del mar en un agujero que había hecho en la arena. Agustín le dijo que eso era imposible y rápidamente comprendió que más difícil aún era comprender el misterio de la Trinidad. La Trinidad se ha convertido en un tema de especulación para los teólogos, de tal modo que para la mayoría del pueblo cristiano la Trinidad es algo que anda “por las nubes”. Es necesario que “aterricemos” la Trinidad y reflexionemos acerca de lo que significa para la fe. La Trinidad constituye un modelo de vida para nosotros. Lo primero que resalta es su gran unidad, y eso es lo que Dios nos pide que haya entre nosotros. También se nos muestra como modelo de sociedad. El Padre, el Hijo y el Espíritu trabajan en equipo, y así ha de ser en nuestras comunidades, cada uno con su función, viviendo los carismas que Dios nos ha dado. Esta es la mejor forma de vivir  la Trinidad.

Oración: Señor, ayúdanos a permanecer siempre unidos y trabajar en sociedad. Concédenos buscar nuestra perfección, teniendo un mismo sentir y viviendo en paz. Amén.

HE LIFTS ME IN HIS ARMS

PSALM 61:1-5

“The eternal God is your refuge,

And underneath are the everlasting arms. ”

Deuteronomy 33:27

During a parade which I recently attended, the crowds began to express their enthusiasm when they heard the instruments of a school band in the distance. A little boy in back got up on his feet trying to see.  Unable to see, he began to cry and his father lifted him upon his shoulders. From there he was able to enjoy the parade. The little boy needed a different perspective in order to be able to see.  The solution was for his father to lift him up in his arms.

In my spiritual life I also need for my Heavenly Father to lift me above my circumstances. Times of testing block my way at times. I don’t understand how it is that God can make everything work for good.  Just as when I was a young child I didn’t need to worry because I knew that my father would always be there for me.  Tomorrow we will celebrate Father’s Day.  The Bible always reminds me that God is my Father and that his eternal arms are my support.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for my earthly father.   Thank you for being my Heavenly Father. Amen.

ME ALZA EN SUS BRAZOS

SALMO 61:1-5

“El eterno Dios es tu refugio

y sus brazos eternos son tu apoyo”

En un desfile al que fui hace poco, la multitud comenzó a expresar su entusiasmo cuando los instrumentos de la banda de música escolar empezaron a escucharse en la distancia. Un niño que estaba atrás se puso en pie tratando de ver. Como no podía, comenzó a llorar y su padre lo puso en sus hombros. Desde ahí disfrutó del desfile. El niño necesitaba una perspectiva diferente para poder ver. La solución llegó cuando su padre lo levantó en sus brazos.

En mi vida espiritual también necesito que mi Padre Celestial me levante  por encima de las circunstancias. Las pruebas a veces me bloquean el camino. No entiendo como es que Dios puede hacer que todas las cosas obren en bien. Como tampoco cuando era niño me tenía que preocupar pues sabía que mi padre siempre estaría ahí para mí.

Mañana celebraremos el Día de los Padres. La Biblia me recuerda siempre que Dios es mi Padre y que sus brazos eternos son mi apoyo.

Oración: Gracias Señor, por mi padre terrenal. Gracias por ser tu mi Padre Celestial. Amén.

RENEWAL

2 CORINTHIANS 4:7-18

“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. ”

2  Corinthians 4:16

A river’s waters are capable of wearing down the rocks in its riverbed to the point of dissolving them.  This is not the reason, however, for the disappearance of the rock material; rather, it has been transformed into sand. Similarly, erosion and birth are part of the same process, although imperceptible at times, but always real. Our human exterior also erodes. But we should keep in mind that there exists a way for our interior to constantly renew itself:  acknowledging that God has the power to renew us for the better, by his grace.

Paul counsels us to not lose heart in this ordeal.  Renewing ourselves means having the sensibility to look around ourselves in order to find God’s invitations for change.  It may be through the most unexpected means, but God manifests himself so that we will set aside the old ways of living that are not conducive to our spiritual renewal.

Prayer: God of life, allow our transformations to be genuine, and may our erosions help us to renew our commitments to your kingdom. Amen.  

RENOVACIÓN

2 CORINTIOS 4:7-18

“Por tanto no desmayamos, antes aunque este

hombre exterior se va desgastando, el interior;

no obstante se renueva de día en día”

2  Corintios 4:16

El agua de los ríos es capaz de desgastar con su cauce las rocas hasta incluso deshacerlas. Sin embargo no por eso la materia de las rocas desaparece, sino que se convierte en arena. Así, desgaste y nacimiento son parte de un mismo proceso, aunque a veces imperceptible, pero siempre real. También nuestro ser humano exterior se desgasta. Pero debemos tener en cuenta que existe una manera de que nuestro interior renazca constantemente: reconociendo en Dios la capacidad de ser renovados para bien, por su gracia. Pablo nos aconseja no desmayar en este empeño. Renovarnos significa tener la sensibilidad necesaria para encontrar a nuestro alrededor las señales de Dios que nos inviten a cambiar. Puede ser quizás a través de las maneras más inesperadas, pero Dios se manifiesta para que dejemos a un lado las antiguas formas de vivir que no aportan a nuestra renovación espiritual.

Oración: Dios de la vida, permite que nuestras transformaciones sean genuinas, que los desgastes nos sirvan para renovar nuestros compromisos con tu reino. Amén.

GOD IN OUR TIMES OF SUFFERING

ROMANS 8:31-39

“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”

Romans 8:18

If you are going through a difficult time of grief and sorrow, of fighting within the family, of unemployment, of accidents or illnesses; take the time you need to grieve and to recover. God is there suffering alongside of you. Let us recall today the Israelites’ pilgrimage through the desert. God brought them out of slavery and they started out on a long journey, learning who God is in the desert, without water or fresh food, without the fertile fields of Goshen.  They suffer, they doubt, they endure, they hope, and some believe, because they experience the miracles of crossing the Red Sea, of following the cloud or the column of fire….They go through so much, anticipating glory, their promised land: Canaan!  The experience of suffering precedes the experience of glory; their order cannot be reversed. The hand of the loving Father guides us through it.

Prayer: Father, do not allow our sorrows and sufferings to overwhelm or discourage us.  Help us to see you at our side saying:  “This is the way.” Amen.

DIOS Y NOSOTROS

EN LOS SUFRIMIENTOS

ROMANOS 8:31-39

“Considero que los sufrimientos del tiempo  presente

no son nada si los comparamos con la gloria

que habremos de ver después”

Romanos 8:18

Si usted está atravesando un momento difícil por duelo, por luchas en la familia, por desempleo, por accidentes o enfermedades; tome su tiempo para llorar y reponerse. Dios está allí sufriendo con usted. Recordemos hoy la peregrinación del pueblo de Israel por el desierto. Dios los sacó de la esclavitud e inician un largo caminar, aprendiendo quién es Dios en el desierto, sin agua ni alimentos frescos, sin los campos fértiles de Gosén. Sufren, dudan, soportan, esperan, y algunos creen, porque viven las maravillas de cruzar el Mar Rojo, de seguir la nube o la columna de fuego… ¡Viven tantas experiencias, anticipando la gloria, su tierra prometida: Canaán! La experiencia del sufrimiento precede a la experiencia de gloria; no se puede cambiar el orden de los factores. Se puede vivirlo de la mano del Padre amante.

Oración: Padre, no permitas que las penas y sufrimientos nos agobien o desmayen. Ayúdanos a verte a nuestro lado diciendo: “Este es el camino”. Amén.

WHAT IS OUR DESIRE?

PSALM 21:1-7

“Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

Psalm 37:4

An airline pilot had the custom, as he flew over his hometown, of looking intently out the windows, after having asked his co-pilot to take over the controls.  One day the co-pilot’s curiosity drove him to ask the pilot: “What are you looking at down there?”  The pilot replied: “Do you see that boy fishing in the river?  I used to fish in that same place when I was a kid.  Every time a plane flew overhead, I would watch it until it disappeared, and I wanted to be the one flying it.” Later, with a deep sigh, he added: “And now I want to be the one who’s down there fishing.”

King David found satisfaction when his delight was rooted in the strength and the salvation of the Lord. When our desires conform to God’s will, we will most probably not waste our time desiring unattainable things.  True joy doesn’t come when we get what we want, but rather when we desire to be close to God.  In other words, it’s when we realize that God has everything we need.

Prayer: Lord, we pray that our desires may always be pleasing to your eyes. Amen.

¿CUÁL ES NUESTRO DESEO?

SALMO 21:1-7

“Deléitate asimismo en Jehová, y Él te concederá

las peticiones de tu corazón”

Salmo 37:4

Un piloto de aviones tenía por costumbre, al sobrevolar por su pueblo natal,  mirar fijamente por las ventanas, luego de pedirle a su copiloto que se hiciera cargo de los controles. Un día la curiosidad del copiloto lo llevó a preguntarle: “¿Qué es lo que miras allá abajo?” El piloto le respondió: “¿Ves aquel chico pescando en el río? Yo solía pescar desde ese mismo lugar cuando era niño. Siempre que un avión volaba lo contemplaba hasta que desaparecía y deseaba ser yo el piloto.” Luego, con un profundo suspiro agregó: “Ahora deseo ser yo el que esté pescando ahí abajo”.

El rey David encontró satisfacción cuando su gozo estaba arraigado en la fortaleza y en la salvación del Señor. Cuando nuestros deseos se conforman a la voluntad de Dios, lo más probable es que no perderemos el tiempo deseando las cosas inalcanzables. El verdadero gozo no viene cuando obtenemos lo que deseamos, sino cuando deseamos estar cerca de Dios. Es decir, cuando nos damos cuenta de que Dios tiene todo lo que necesitamos.

Oración: Señor, oramos para que siempre nuestros deseos sean gratos a tus ojos. Amén.

WITH GOD ALL DAY LONG

EPHESIANS 5:13-20

“Lord, you have assigned me my portion and my cup;

you have made my lot secure”

Psalm 16:5

Looking back on all that has happened in my life until now, I see more things that are sad rather than happy. I’ve experienced the loss of my parents, and loneliness, and need. My family has dispersed. Because of all this, some people consider me to be very poor, but they don’t know that I am rich. Now that these changes have taken place in my life, I seek to find out the best things about them.  I consider myself to be in very good company, because I am in intimate communion with the Lord. I try to take good advantage of my time: I write, I read, I pray and praise God, I attend church meetings and services, I visit the sick, and those who are in mourning.  I help as many people as I can.  I rejoice in the certainty that these changes are working for good in my life. My poverty has turned into wealth, which comes from an inexhaustible source of all that is good. God meets my needs according to the richness of his glory and strengthens my inner being with power through his Spirit.  There is power in being in communion with God.

Prayer: Loving God, thank you for communion with you that helps us in difficult situations, and teaches us to make the most of our time. Amen.

CON DIOS TODO DEL DÍA

EFESIOS 5:13-20

“Tú Señor, eres mi todo; tú me colmas de bendiciones,

mi vida está en tus manos”

Salmo 16:5

Al hacer un recuento de lo que ha sucedido en mi vida hasta ahora,  veo más cosas tristes que alegres. He tenido experiencias de orfandad, soledad y necesidad. Mi familia se ha dispersado. A causa de todo esto, algunas personas me consideran muy pobre, pero no saben que soy rica. Ahora que se han dado estos cambios en mi vida, he buscado aprender lo mejor de ellos. Considero estar muy bien acompañada, pues estoy en íntima comunión con el Señor. Trato de vivir aprovechando bien el tiempo: escribo, leo, oro y alabo a Dios, asisto a las reuniones y cultos de la iglesia, visito a los enfermos, a quienes están de luto. Ayudo a todos en lo que puedo. Me gozo en la certeza de que estos cambios han obrado para bien en mi vida. Mi pobreza se ha convertido en riqueza, la cual proviene de la fuente inagotable de todo bien. Dios suple mis necesidades conforme a la riqueza de su gloria y fortalece con poder mi ser interior por su Espíritu. En la comunión con Dios está el poder.

Oración: Amante Dios, gracias porque la comunión contigo nos ayuda en situaciones difíciles, y nos enseña a provechar  bien el tiempo. Amén.
