Wednesday, January 21 GO UP INTO THE MOUNTAINS HAGGAI 1

Wednesday, January 21
GO UP INTO THE MOUNTAINS
HAGGAI 1
“Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build the house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored,’ says the LORD.”
Haggai 1:8

The prophet Haggai contemplated a sad sight:  upon their return from captivity, the Hebrew people began to rebuild their own houses, orchards and farms.  They devoted themselves to their businesses and other activities, while God’s temple remained in ruins.

Haggai knew that religious unity meant national strength. He knew that without God and without faith the people would be weak and become an easy prey for their enemies.  This is why he told the people:  Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build the house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored,’ says the LORD.

Let us apply these verses to our lives, which are at times in ruins like the ancient Hebrew temple.

The materials for the spiritual reconstruction of our lives are to be found above.  And the Lord says: “Go up into the mountains.”  Go up into the mountains of prayer.  Go up into the mountains of faith.  Go up into the mountains of consolation. Go up into the mountains of obedience. Go up into the mountains of enthusiasm.  Those are the materials that you need in order to rebuild your spiritual life.

Don’t look for those materials here below.  You have to go up above into the mountains.  God will give them to you.  You will see that God will impose his will upon a restored spiritual life and will be glorified within it.

Prayer: Give us, Lord, the elements of faith needed in order to have an abundant life in you. Amen.

SUBID AL MONTE
HAGEO 1

Tuesday, January 20 THE VALUE OF MODERATION 2 CORINTHIANS 10:12-18

Tuesday, January 20
THE VALUE OF MODERATION
2 CorintHIANS 10:12-18

“Understanding is a fountain of life to those who have it…”
Proverbs 16:22a

There is a popular saying that goes: “Cubans either don’t do it at all or they go overboard.”  I don’t know how accurate or sociologically proven this proverb may be, but what is undeniable is the importance of moderation in all of life’s dimensions.

In some Asian countries, for example, very small glasses are used for drinking beverages, be it water or tea… It is an invitation to drink, consuming only as much as is needed, an exact measure.  If more is needed beyond what these minuscule glasses hold, then one is served again. But those small containers leave no room for excess, debauchery or abuse.

Similarly, we should cultivate this same value of moderation to each dimension of our existence. Our planet is sick due to the indiscriminate use of natural resources, among other causes. Many human relationships have been destroyed due to excesses of confidence and lack of moderation.  Through overwork, without moderation, many people have damaged their bodies… In short, the challenge is in trying to find the “happy medium” that God has given us and not going overboard.  That is moderation!

Prayer:  God of mercy and goodness, help us to behave with moderation and sobriety.  Give us the wisdom to respect your limits and to reach only as far as you have decreed for us.  In the name of Jesus. Amen.

EL VALOR DE LA MESURA
2 Corintios 10:12-18

Monday, January 19 MORNING PRAYER JOHN 17:1-26

Monday, January 19
MORNING PRAYER
JOHN 17:1-26
“Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me.”
John 17:25
“Lord, we wish to speak with you in the morning hours, before the shadows arrive and our minds are preoccupied with material issues. May your presence unravel the rudeness of our hearts… The ordinary problems of our lives distress us and worrying about them exhausts us.  But we know that for you nothing is difficult, and that there no limits to your knowledge.  You are the Teacher and Master of our lives.  Teach us to trust in your wisdom and in your love today.  Show us your face and everything will be fine.  We praise you for your power which never fails. Our spiritual strength seems to dissipate each day like the Israelite’s manna. We need the guidance of your hand because only then are we strong enough to continue moving forward.  We don’t know what this day will bring us and we do not want to live it without you. The bitterness of life seems to discourage us.  So many people seem to count on us today, but we do not have strength in reserve. We confess our poverty and our weakness, because we cannot hide them from you.  Strengthen us before we confront our problems.  Make us joyful witnesses to our new lives.  Help us to follow your example.  Help us not to fear the face of a human being, nor to seek its praise. Remember those who are alone in distant places.  Teach us how to be your collaborators. Help us to be friends to those who are defeated, marginalized and oppressed.  Help those who feel weak and dismayed. Give us a day of cheerful service and may our actions be pleasing to you. May we not forget this time with you.  In your name we pray.  Amen.

Prayer: Lord, grant that this be our daily prayer. Amen.

ORACIÓN MATUTINA
JUAN 17:1-26

Sunday, January 18 AT ELIANA’S EYE LEVEL LUKE 22:7-20

Sunday, January 18
AT ELIANA’S EYE LEVEL
LUKE 22:7-20

“Do this in memory of me."
Eliana was a pretty girl who was under her grandparents’ care while her parents were at work.  It was incredible to see everything her grandparents did so that the little girl would feel at home with them. For example, they would place photos of the girl with her parents on the refrigerator “at Elaina’s eye level”.  That way, she could see them or take them with her all over the house all day long. “We want our granddaughter to think about her mom and her dad often throughout the day,” expressed the grandparents. Why would they do this? Could Eliana possibly have forgotten her parents? Of course not, but I imagine that it was a comfort to her to have a constant reminder of them.

I think about that now.  At the Last Supper, Jesus said to his disciples—and to us by extension—
: “Do this [eat the bread and drink from the cup] in remembrance of me.”  Is it because we might forget about Jesus? Of course not!  Nevertheless, each time that we eat this bread and drink from that cup, we have a vivid reminder and we feel his presence in a very spiritual way. With this sacrament we will always remember his great sacrifice, his presence, his power and his promises.

Thus, just as the photos remind Eliana of the love of her parents, the celebration of the Eucharist offers us a valuable remembrance and an unrivaled experience of faith and communion with Jesus Christ.

Prayer: Jesus, we thank you  for the banquet that you prepare for us and for the blessing of sharing your table together with other brothers and sisters, united in one faith and in the same love. Amen.

LUCAS 22:7-20

Saturday, January 17 ON THE ROAD ACTS 9:1-22

Saturday, January 17
ON THE ROAD
ACTS 9:1-22

“Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, ‘Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”
Acts 9:17
It was on a road that Saul of Tarsus met Jesus. Some may have met him in a worship service, at church, in the solitude and quiet of a bedroom or while contemplating the serenity of an afternoon in the countryside. But Saul of Tarsus met him on the road.

Nearly all of us have had a similar experience.  On the road of our work, on the road of our projects and plans, or on the road of our anguish and problems: that is where we have had our decisive encounter with Jesus.

It is quite natural for Saul to have met his Lord on the road.  He was a man of action, a fighting man. He continued along the road of action and of fighting. But he now had a new ideal:  to serve Jesus Christ.

What is your life’s road?  Are you happy walking on it? Has this road been baptized with the presence of Jesus?  Do you walk on it with the purpose of serving Him?

It was on the road that Saul met the Lord.  Place your road, your work, and your efforts at Jesus’ feet. You too can experience the blessings of Saul of Tarsus: an experience so decisive that it restores a new vision within us and can radically change us, even our names.

Prayer: Lord, grant that our lives find the true road that leads to you and help us to walk on it. Amen.

POR EL CAMINO
HECHOS 9:1-22

Friday, January 16 MY FIRST SIBLINGS JOHN 13:31-35

Friday, January 16
MY FIRST SIBLINGS
JOHN 13:31-35
“By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
John 13:35

The first Sunday that I attended my Church I sat next to an elderly married couple; she sweetly smiled at me and made room for me with great kindness by her side on the pew. At that very moment I knew that I had found my first siblings in Christ. This kept repeating itself week after week and a link of friendship and fellowship was established between us.  She taught me to understand the liturgy, the organization and systems of the Church, which was new to me, and for which I will always be grateful.  It has been over a year since they stopped coming to Church due to serious health problems and by the grace of God I have become a sort of spiritual bridge between them and the ongoing community activities.  I’ve been able to keep them updated.  Each time I visit them I share with them and maintain a constant prayer to God for their health.

I am thankful to God for the opportunity to serve Him and to share in His work through visitation, prayer and service to others with all my love and Christian faith.  I give thanks to Him because there is always something that we can do for the good of others.

Prayer: Our God, thank you for the opportunity to give love and to offer help to those who need us. Amen.

MIS PRIMEROS HERMANOS
JUAN 13:31-35

He procurado que estén actualizados.

Thursday, January 15 THE WHEEL MATTHEW 6:34

Thursday, January 15
THE WHEEL
MATTHEW 6:34
“My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word.”
 Psalm 119:28
There is a story about a wheel that was missing one of its spokes.  One day the wheel went off in search of the spoke that it had lost.  But since it was incomplete, it could only roll very slowly, and it stopped to smell the pretty flowers along the side of the road, and to talk with the birds and to enjoy the rays of sunshine. One day it found a spoke that fit perfectly.  So it became very happy. It placed the fragment on its body and began to roll… It became a perfect wheel again that could roll with great speed. It began to roll so rapidly, that it no longer saw the flowers nor chatted with the birds. When it realized how different the world appeared when it rolled so rapidly, it stopped, it left the spoke that it had found on the side of the road and slowly rolled away.

The moral of this story is that, for some reason, we feel more complete when something is lacking.  The person who has everything is poor in certain aspects:  He will never know what it means to yearn, to have hopes or to nourish the soul with the dream of something better.  There is integrity in a person who accepts his limitations and has enough courage to renounce his unreachable dreams without feeling that he has failed on that account.  There is wholeness in one who has learned to be strong in order to suffer and survive a tragedy.  Let us accept that imperfection is part of the human condition and let us continue rolling through life without renouncing the enjoyment of its pleasures.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for teaching us how to live without anxiety, filling our spirits with the little details that you offer us at each footstep.  Amen.

LA RUEDA
MATEO 6:34
