THE PRAYER OF JABEZ

1 CHRONICLES 4:9-10

Jabez called on Israel’s God: “if only you would greatly bless me and increase my territory.  May your power go with me to keep me from trouble, so as not to cause me pain.”  And God granted his request.

1 Chron. 4:10 (CEB)

Osteoporosis has made my sister’s bones as brittle as porcelain. There is nothing she can do to prevent fractures.  She was in bed with her ankle in a cast when I began to read First Chronicles.  I was getting tired of reading all the names when I got to the prayer of Jabez.  He was a noble person, and his prayer was simple.

I identified my sister’s suffering with that of Jabez.  His mother called him Jabez because she said: in truth I have given birth with pain (1 Chron. 4:9).  Jabez realized that growth, security, and protection from evil are blessings of God.  He presented his petitions to God, and God responded.

Jabez has become my prayer partner.  Every day I think about my sister, remember the prayer of Jabez, and I say:  May your hand be with my sister and may she be free from bad things, so that they will not hurt her.  Then, in faith, I leave my needs and those of others in God’s hands.

Prayer: O God, may your hand be with us.  Permit us to remember that all gifts proceed from your grace.  Amen.

OUR MASON'S PLUMB LINE

Amos 7:7-9

And the Lord said to me, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A plumb line.”

Amos 7:8 (NRSV)

This is your most important tool. My husband showed me the level. He was teaching me to hang wall paper; “Don’t trust your eye if the paper is straight, and don’t use the line of the previous paper as your guide.” “Trust the level; it’s your plumb line, a guide that is constant.” “If you use this level, you can be sure that the paper will hang straight.”

The Lord showed Amos a vision and told him, “With this mason’s plumb line I am going to see how true the conduct of my people is.” The plumb line would establish the standard of righteousness. God would no longer pardon the injustice and impiety of the poeple.

We also have a mason’s plumb line: the Word of God. We can decide on our own what is right and wrong, but that decision can make us off level, can separate us from God’s will. When we make decisions, it is important to realize that the world is always trying to impose its standards on us. But the standard by which we must measure our actions is God’s Word. That does not change. No matter our situation, we must remain faithful to the mason’s plumb line, of God’s Word.

Prayer: Lord, help us to measure ourselves by the standards established in your Word; we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

NUESTRA PLOMADA DE ALBAÑIL

Amos 7:7-9

Me preguntó Dios: ¿Qué ves Amós? Una plomada de

albañil –respondí.

Am. 7:8

WATER AND FIRE

Isaiah 43:1-7

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.

Isaiah 43:2 (NRSV)

I was going through difficult times, and I confided in my friends. Although the majority of the people with whom I spoke listened to me and supported me with their prayers, a man suggested that perhaps I had not understood God’s direction or had not accepted God’s sustaining grace, and that I bore the responsibility for my struggle. His comments added to my pain, but also led me to examine my heart.

Negligence and foolishness can bring unnecessary trials. However, God assures us that confronting difficult situations does not mean that we have committed an error, nor does experiencing difficulty or pain mean that we have been mistaken about God’s direction. God tells us, “If you depend on me, you will never feel the heat of the flames nor struggle agains the deep waters.” God recognizes that we confront difficult situations when he says to us, “When you pass through the waters . . . . When you pass through the fire . . . .” Difficult situations are a part of life.

When we confront difficulties, God is with us. In the fiery furnace, in the streams of water, God is with us, sustaining us, strengthening us, and keeping us.

Prayer: God, thank you that you understand our difficulties. Thank you for your constant presence and strength. Amen.

AGUA Y FUEGO

Is. 43:2

Oración: Gracias, oh Dios, pues entiendes nuestras dificultades. Gracias por tu constante presencia y fortaleza. Amén.
