Anniversary of UNMPRC

“LYDIA, A WOMAN WORTHY OF IMITATION”

Acts 16:11-15 y 40

One of those listening was a woman of the city of Thyatira named Lidia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message. (NIV)

            Lydia was a religious woman, although the fact that she was worshiping on the Sabbath does not mean that she was Jewish, but rather a God-fearing Gentile. She occupies a prominent place within Luke’s work because she has a voice in a context where women are silenced. This woman does not appear alone, but with other women. The riverside gathering provided a space where women could share their joys and sorrows, their dreams or hopes, the hard work of each day, and serve as leaders in worship. 

            Lydia was the first European woman to convert to Christianity. Her role in the early church was of the utmost importance. She was the first person in her region to form a Christian center in her home. Today our churches count on women leaders. A special day is not enough to talk about their work. We must evaluate and dignify the work of these women, their commitment, responsibility, time and sacrifice.

            Let us also remember those women who work in anonymity, but who work for God and for the common good. Let us encourage those who have not yet committed, so that they too may place their small grain of sand. We must ensure the well-being, the physical, mental and spiritual balance of the women of our time.

 

Prayer: Lord, we pray for the Presbyterian woman. We ask for their lives, and so that their challenges or dreams may become reality. Help them in their various activities so that they may always give testimony of you. Amen.

Una de ellas, llamada Lidia, vendedora de púrpura, natural de la ciudad de Tiatira, y que adoraba a Dios, nos escuchaba. El Señor le abrió el corazón...

            Lidia era una mujer religiosa, aunque el hecho que estuviese adorando en sábado no significa que fuera judía sino una gentil temerosa de Dios. Ella ocupa un lugar destacado dentro de la obra de Lucas porque tiene voz en un contexto donde la mujer es silenciada. Esta mujer no aparece sola sino junto a otras mujeres. La reunión junto al rio proveía un espacio donde las mujeres podían compartir sus alegrías y penas, sus sueños o esperanzas, el duro quehacer de cada día y servir como líderes en la adoración.

            Lidia fue la primera mujer europea en convertirse al cristianismo. Su papel en la Iglesia primitiva fue de suma importancia. Es la primera persona en su región en formar un centro cristiano en su casa. Hoy nuestras iglesias cuentan con mujeres líderes. Un día especial no basta para hablar del quehacer de ellas. Hemos de evaluar y dignificar el trabajo de esas mujeres: su compromiso, responsabilidad, tiempo, sacrificio. Recordemos también a aquellas mujeres que trabajan en anonimato, pero que trabajan para Dios y por el bienestar común. Animemos a aquellas que aún no se comprometen para que también ellas coloquen su granito de arena. Velemos por el bienestar y equilibrio físico, psíquico y espiritual de la mujer de nuestro tiempo.

 

Oración: Señor, rogamos por la Mujer Presbiteriana. Suplicamos por su vida y porque sus retos o sueños se hagan realidad. Ayúdale en sus diversas actividades para que siempre pueda dar testimonio de Ti. Amén.
