TESTED AND TEMPTED
BUT NOT OVERCOME
1 CORINTHIANS 10:1-22
“No temptation has seized you except what is common to man.  And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”

1 Corinthians 10:13
 

I read among Dr. Robert Young’s writings: “Moreover, scripture constantly shows us that good people endure suffering because suffering is one of the surest and most effective ways that God uses in order to bring out the best of our human nature.”

Being a Christian exempts us neither from suffering nor from testing; I would even say that it prepares us for those difficult moments that we must overcome.  Faced with any violent situation, the Christian reaffirms his faith, knowing that God is at his side caring for him and helping him to find the way out. Stand firm because God will not abandon us.

Prayer: Lord, you do not fail us even in the worst moments.  Allow us to be with you and to become worthy examples of Jesus. Amen.

PROBADOS Y TENTADOS,
PERO NO VENCIDOS

“No os ha sobrevivido ninguna tentación que no sea humana; pero fiel es Dios, que no nos dejará  ser tentados más de lo que podéis resistir, sino que dará también juntamente con la tentación, la salida, para que podáis soportar”

He leído una frase del Dr. Robert Young que dice: “Además la escritura nos enseña constantemente que los buenos padecen porque el sufrimiento  es uno de los medios más seguros  y eficaces de que se vale Dios para sacar a la luz lo mejor de nuestro ser”
Ser cristiano no nos exime del sufrimiento ni de las pruebas; yo diría que más bien nos prepara para los momentos difíciles, donde es necesario vencer. El cristiano, frente a cada situación violenta, reafirma su fe, por cuanto sabe que Dios está a su lado cuidándolo y ayudándolo a buscar la salida. Estad firmes que Dios no nos dejará.

Oración: Señor, tú no nos fallas ni aun en los peores momentos. Permítenos encontrarnos contigo y ser dignos ejemplos de Jesús. Amén.

CHRISTIAN COURAGE
JOSHUA 1:1-9
“Be strong and courageous…”

  Joshua 1:6

May you have courage and resolution!  May you get yourself up and going in the face of that inertia that keeps you from acting or doing or speaking! Courage and resolve are not the same as arrogance or violence, nor are they the same as crudeness or unkindness or offensiveness. It takes courage and resolve to be able to overcome fear and prejudice, and to go beyond your limitations in order to solve those problems that are strangling you and those around you.  We need courage and resolve in order to apologize to those we have hurt or offended, and in order to serve others using our time of rest or of sleep, and in order to uncover a hidden truth.  Courageousness means quietly bearing each day’s cross, without complaining or moaning. Bravery is loving those who offend or scorn us.  The Word of God reminds us that the Lord has not given us a spirit of cowardice.

 
Let us the recall the beautiful verse of a well-known hymn:  if there is courage and faith, if there is courage and faith, there will always be light in the darkest night.

Prayer: Lord God, teach us to search for your power and your wisdom.  Show us the way of salvation and help us to always make the effort to better serve you with courage and faith. Amen.

LA VALENTÍA CRISTIANA
JOSUÉ 1:1-9
“Esfuérzate y sé valiente…”

Josué 1:6

¡Qué tengas valor y firmeza! ¡Qué te levantes y vayas contra esa inercia  que te impida actuar, hacer o decir! Valor y firmeza no es arrogancia ni violencia, no es tosquedad, maltrato u ofensa. Hay valor y firmeza cuando eres capaz de superar miedos y prejuicios, e ir más allá de tus limitaciones para resolver aquellos problemas que te ahogan a ti y quienes te rodean. Se necesita valor y firmeza para dar excusas cuando hemos herido u ofendido, para servir a los demás utilizando nuestro tiempo de descanso o de sueño, para decir la verdad oculta. Valentía es llevar calladamente la cruz de cada día, sin quejas o lamentos. Valentía es amar a quienes nos ofenden o desprecian. La Palabra de Dios nos recuerda que el Señor no nos ha dado espíritu de cobardía.

Recordemos la hermosa frase de un conocido himno: si hay valor y fe, si hay valor y fe, en la más oscura noche siempre hay luz.

 

Oración: Dios, enséñanos a  buscar tu poder y tu sabiduría. Enséñanos el camino de salvación y haz que siempre nos esforcemos por servirte mejor con valor y fe. Amén.

Wednesday, February 5- Anniversary of the Church “The Redeemer” in Versalles, Matanzas

HOW COULD I BE SAD?
ROMANS 8:28-39
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him…”

Romans 8:28

The lyrics of the evangelical hymn containing these verses say: “How could I be sad? How could I walk between shadows?  How could I feel alone, and be living in pain?  For Christ is my comfort; he is my ever faithful friend.  If even the birds find certain refuge in him…when within me my faith grows faint, and I fall down in the weight of my anxiety, he alone lifts me up and grants me security…”

The emotional state of sadness is usually accompanied by anxiety, anguish, depression, loneliness, and even crying. We have all been in this situation at some moment in our lives.  A few years ago I had a moment of bitterness and then my pastor said to me: “Wear the clothing in which the Lord dresses you in song, and never be sad, because it is a sin to be sad.” My pastor was right, because a Christian who is sad is not the same as a sad Christian. That pastor succeeded in convincing me that sadness was the worst enemy of life and of faith, because sadness erodes the spirit and distances us from our Savior. This is a hymn of victory and confidence, and by singing it often we can fill ourselves with him and integrate the musical message that it offers us.

 
Prayer: Lord, when our faith is faint, allow us to feel your presence, which sustains and uplifts us. Amen.

Aniversario de la Iglesia “El Redentor” (Versalles)
¿CÓMO PODRÉ ESTAR TRISTE?
ROMANOS 8:28-39
“Y sabemos que a los que aman a Dios,
todas las cosas les ayudan a bien…”

Romanos 8:28

La letra del himno evangélico que intitula esta reflexión dice: “¿Cómo podré estar triste? ¿Cómo entre sombras ir? ¿Cómo sentirme solo,  y en el dolor vivir? Si Cristo es mi consuelo, mi amigo siempre fiel. Si aun las aves tienen, seguro asilo en él… Si en mí la fe desmaya, y caigo en la ansiedad, tan solo él me levanta, me da seguridad...”

La tristeza  como estado emocional suele ir acompañada de ansiedad, angustia, depresión, soledad y hasta llanto. Esta situación en algún momento de nuestras vidas la hemos pasado. Hace varios años yo tuve un momento amargo, y entonces mi  pastor me dijo: “Lleva cantando el traje con que el Señor te viste, y no estés nunca triste, que es pecado estar triste”. El pastor tenía razón, porque no es lo mismo un cristiano triste que un triste cristiano. Aquel pastor logró convencerme que la tristeza era el peor enemigo de la vida y de la fe, porque la tristeza mina el espíritu y nos aparta de nuestro Salvador. Este es un himno de victoria y de seguridad, cantándolo frecuentemente nos llenamos de él y logramos interiorizar el mensaje musical que nos ofrece.

Oración: Señor, permite que cuando nuestra fe desmaye, sintamos tu presencia, que nos sostiene y levanta. Amén.

RECOGNIZING HIS VOICE IN THE SILENCE
HABAKKUK 1:1-4
“How long, O Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen?”

Habakkuk 1:2

In the course of a conversation, a person was telling me: “God does not always answer our prayers” and later added: “I think God sometimes answers with silence.”

Could such silences be real answers on the part of the God of love?  In many instances we would surely not understand this to be the case; but these silences of God at times make us better understand the seriousness of our errors. In other instances they serve to make us seek him with greater zealousness. His silences enable us to come to know him in a way that we had not known him before and to pay attention to the signs that he sends us through various sources.

Certainly, God often answers with his silence.  It is one of the ways in which he shows us his mercy and goodness, his love and understanding.

Prayer: Lord, we trust in you. We wait patiently. Amen.

RECONOCER SU VOZ EN EL SILENCIO
HABACUB 1:1-4
“ ¿Hasta cuándo, oh Jehová, clamaré y no oirás…?”

Habacuc 1:2

En el curso de una conversación, una persona me decía: “Dios no siempre contesta nuestras oraciones” y después añadió: “Creo que Dios a veces contesta con el silencio.”

¿No serán estos silencios verdaderas contestaciones de parte del  Dios de amor? En muchas ocasiones seguramente no lo entenderemos así; pero estos silencios de Dios a veces nos hacen comprender mejor la gravedad de nuestros errores.  En otras ocasiones  nos sirven de  para buscarle con mayor celo. Sus silencios nos capacitan para llegar a conocerle como no lo habíamos conocido antes y a prestar atención a las señales que nos envía por diversas fuentes.

Ciertamente, Dios a menudo contesta con su silencio. Es una de las formas  en que nos anuncia su misericordia y bondad, su amor y comprensión.

Oración: Señor, confiamos en ti. Esperamos con paciencia. Amén.

Monday, February 3- Anniversary of the Church “El Cristo” in Matanzas

THE SHEPHERD AND HIS SHEEP
JOHN 10:1-6
“And when he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.”

John 10: 4

A mother recognizes her child’s voice among the voices of other crying children. She understands his whining when he is hungry or sick.  The child also quickly learns to distinguish his mother’s voice and to feel secure in her arms.

Christ is our Shepherd.  He wishes for us to pay attention to his voice. He knows us by name. We are his sheep.  Might we have stopped to wonder what kind of sheep we are? When the Teacher speaks to us, do we recognize his voice?  Are we like the sheep that thinks he is able to find pasture on his own and forgets that the wolf circles in search of the sheep that strays from the shepherd?

Peace and freedom are obtained when we submit to the care and protection of the Shepherd who gives his life for his sheep.

 
Prayer: We thank you, God, because you know us and because we know you and obey your voice. Amen.

 
 

Aniversario de la Iglesia “El Cristo” (Matanzas)
EL PASTOR Y SUS OVEJAS
JUAN 10:1-6
“Y cuando  ha sacado fuera todas las propias ,
va delante de ellas; y las ovejas le siguen,
porque conocen su voz”

Juan 10: 4

Una madre reconoce la voz de su pequeño entre la voz de otros niños que lloran. Comprende sus quejidos cuando tiene hambre o está enfermo. El niño también aprende pronto a distinguir la voz de la madre y se siente seguro en sus  brazos.

Cristo es nuestro Pastor. Anhela que prestemos atención a su voz. Nos conoce por el nombre. Somos sus ovejas. ¿Nos habremos detenido a pensar qué clase de ovejas somos? Cuando el Maestro nos habla ¿reconocemos su voz? ¿Somos como la oveja que se cree capaz de encontrar pasto por sí sola y se olvida que el lobo ronda en acecho de la oveja que se aleja del pastor?

La paz y la libertad se obtienen cuando nos sometemos al cuidado y defensa del Pastor que da la vida por sus ovejas.

Oración: Gracias te damos Dios, porque tú nos conoces y porque nosotros te conocemos y obedecemos tu voz. Amén.

  THROUGH FIRE AND WATER
PSALM 66
“We went through fire and water, but you brought us to a place of abundance.”

Psalm 66:12

Storms occur in our lives, some of them arising suddenly: an upset, a sorrow, a defeat. Others come little by little, are small in size, and seem insignificant; we nevertheless feel oppressed and we are easily overwhelmed.

It is in the midst of the storm that a pine tree becomes robust.  We also observe an oak when it is punished by a storm and the rains fall upon it, and see that this is how it obtains its magnificent wood grains.

We have lived in the midst of storms, assaulted by wind and rain, but in the midst of everything we have our God who gives us strength, love, understanding and the desire to be the best we can wherever we may find ourselves.

Prayer:  Thank you, God, for the strength and peace that you give us in the midst of storms. Allow our difficult experiences to strengthen our faith and enable our testimony to strengthen others in the midst of their storms. Amen.

 

ENTRAMOS EN FUEGO Y AGUA
SALMO 66
“Pasamos por el fuego y por el agua,
y nos sacaste  a abundancia”

Salmo 66:12

En nuestra vida ocurren tempestades, algunas de ellas surgen rápidamente: un disgusto, una aflicción, una derrota. Otras vienen poco a poco, son de pequeño tamaño,  parecen insignificantes; sin embargo, la opresión se hace sentir y nos abrumamos con facilidad.
En medio de la tormenta es donde el pino se hace robusto. También vemos el roble cuando la tormenta lo castiga y la lluvia cae sobre él, y es donde adquiere sus magníficas fibras.
Hemos vivido en medio de tormentas,  nos ha azotado el viento y la lluvia, pero en medio de todo tenemos a nuestro Dios que nos da fortaleza, amor, comprensión y el deseo de ser mejores donde quiera que nos encontremos.

 

Oración: Gracias Dios, por la fortaleza que nos das y la paz en medio de las tormentas. Permite que nuestras experiencias difíciles fortalezcan nuestra fe y sean testimonio para dar fortaleza a otros en medio de sus tormentas. Amén.

EACH ONE OF US IS IMPORTANT
MATTHEW 25:31-46
“Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.”

Matthew 25:40

A story is told about a nursing student who was confidently answering the questions on an exam until she came upon the final question, which left her astonished. “What is the name of the school’s cleaning lady?” They all thought the professor was joking.  But the professor replied to their questioning by saying: “You will meet many people throughout your careers. Each one of them is important.  They deserve your attention and care…”  In the same way that this became an unforgettable lesson for those students, we should reflect upon today’s message.  In our community, in our neighborhood, and wherever we may find ourselves at work, we should show attention and care for other people. How is it possible that we gather each Sunday with people whose names we don’t even know? We need to take the initiative and to approach each person who God places in our path, on the pew at church, in the line for bread, at school meetings for our children, at our place of work…Let us show the love of God to others, sharing respect and consideration without exception.

Prayer: God of mercy, encourage us to be attentive to the cries of the weakest, so that we may extend our hands to them in solidarity. Amen.

TODOS SOMOS IMPORTANTES
MATEO 25:31-46
“En cuanto lo hiciste a uno de estos mis hermanos
más pequeños, a mi lo hiciste.”

Mateo 25:40

Cuenta una historia que una estudiante de enfermería respondía con seguridad las preguntas de un examen cuando se encontró con la última pregunta que la dejó atónita “¿Cómo se llama la mujer que limpia la escuela?” Todos pensaron que se trataba de una broma del profesor. Y ante el cuestionamiento de sus estudiantes este respondió: En sus carreras ustedes conocerán a muchas personas. Todas son importantes. Ellas merecen su atención y cuidado… Así como esta lección fue inolvidable para los estudiantes, debemos hoy reflexionar en el mensaje que entraña. En nuestra comunidad, en el vecindario, en cualquiera de los espacios de los que participamos debemos mostrar atención y cuidado por las personas. ¿Cómo es posible que nos congreguemos cada domingo junto a personas de las que aún no sabemos ni su nombre? Debemos tomar la iniciativa y acercarnos a cada persona que Dios pone en nuestro camino, en el banco de la iglesia, en la cola del pan, en la reunión de la escuela de nuestros hijos, en nuestro centro de trabajo… Mostremos el amor de Dios a los otros, compartiendo respeto y consideración sin excepciones.

Oración: Dios de misericordia, aliéntanos a estar atentos al clamor de los más débiles, para que podamos extender nuestras manos a ellos en solidaridad. Amén.
