JESUS TEACHES US TO FORGIVE

 Luke 15: 11-32

“But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”

 Luke 15:32a

Jesus revealed to us the image of a forgiving God, restorer of new relationships.  In his preaching about the Kingdom he spoke and lived forgiveness.  In contrast to what is often said, Jesus spoke very little about sin.  There are several gospel stories where he speaks about forgiveness.  The passage about the “Prodigal Son” or about the “loving father’ is one of those.

The forgiveness of sins in the gospel is received as an act of grace on God’s part.  Nevertheless, it requires the previous condition of repentance, as well as amends for the possible consequences of the offense, as an action afterwards. Repentance implies conversion; modifying negative attitudes and promoting positive ones. Forgiveness includes removing oneself from the path of evil towards a new orientation in life.  When we forgive, relationships are reconstructed.  A reunion and creation of new ties are reborn where they had ceased to exist.

Prayer: Forgiving God, grant that our forgiveness toward other persons be genuine, so that we may recover the joy of relationships which were damaged.

JESÚS NOS ENSEÑA A PERDONAR

Lucas 15: 11-32

 “Pero había que celebrar esto

con un banquete y alegrarnos”

 Lucas 15:32a

Saturday, October 11 HOW DID I MEET JESUS> JOHN 14:1-14

HOW DID I MEET JESUS?

JOHN 14:1-14

“I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord.  They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart”.

Jeremiah 24:7

My parents taught me to love God and Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior as of the time that I was a little girl.  I had to go to Church whether I wanted to or not, as it was an obligation.  As I grew older I became more rebellious with that obligation.  My mother pressured me to attend Church until I was finally no longer a minor.  Once I was on my own, I went to Church only sporadically on one or another Sunday, only out of respect to God.

The years passed and then four years ago, now an elderly woman, I came to know the Church where I am now a regular attender and a member.  The most important thing that occurred is that I met the Lord again, I have grown spiritually, I have matured in my Christian faith and at times, I ask God in prayer:  Why did it take so long for me to find this Church where I now belong, not through obligation but with joy and commitment?  Why do I feel that I truly know Jesus Christ now, in my old age, and not before?

Even when I regret the lost time, I give thanks to God every day for this time in my life that has allowed me to draw near to Him, to love him and to follow him with all my heart.

PrayerToday we ask you, Father, to touch the hearts of those persons who have drawn away from you.  We give you thanks for the people who planted the seed of your gospel within us. Amen.

¿CÓMO CONOCÍ A JESÚS?

JUAN  14:1-14

Friday, October 10 THE PRICE OF FREEDOM GALATIANS 5:13-15

Presbytery Meetings. “Grito de Yara”

THE PRICE OF FREEDOM

Galatians 5.13-15

“You, my brothers, were called to be free.”…

Galatians 5.13ª

Freedom… sings solely as it beats its wings, it flies and sings, freedom”; thus go the lyrics to a beautiful song by Silvio Rodríguez and in this and other lovely verses freedom is described as something that flows, that passes undeterred and dancing through life. For the Christian men and women of Galatia, in the First Century, the conditions of freedom in Christ were not yet very clear, which is understandable if we place ourselves at the precise moment at which Paul writes to them:  the beginning of the Christian era, in which doctrine was still being formulated and was subject to diverse interpretations. It seemed that the understanding of freedom was among the ethical issues of greatest transcendence for the Galatians, causing the apostle to instruct them about it.

The commitment to freedom continues to be a great challenge for us. We need to acknowledge that the limits of our freedom do not exist until they do not violate the freedom of others, which the apostle calls “service in love,” a concept that replaces the commonly understood relationships of freedom-servitude at that specific time in history. Today we are called by God to proclaim a definitive freedom from oppression through Jesus Christ who breaks all bondage, from the deepest part of our inner being, from social and structural oppressions, such as people and authorities, which are capable of drowning us.  God grant that we may always be agents of freedom to those around us instead of transmitters of chains and anxieties!

Prayer:  God of goodness and of Life, we give you thanks because your message since time immemorial encourages us toward freedom and commitment to your work. Amen.

El precio de la libertad

Gálatas 5.13-15

“Vosotros hermanos, a libertad fuisteis llamados”…

Thursday, October 9 IF GOD IS WITH YOU, WHO CAN BE AGAINST YOU? DEUTERONOMY 31:1-8

Thursday, October 9

IF GOD IS WITH YOU, WHO CAN BE AGAINST YOU?

DEUTERONOMY 31:1-8

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.

Deuteronomy 31:6

If I were to ask the question “Who has been afraid?”  I think that every man and woman would reply:  “I HAVE.”  And if I were to ask “Who has not been afraid?”  I think that anyone who replies “I HAVE NOT BEEN AFRAID” is lying.  The best definition of COURAGE is:  to go forward with or do or say something in spite of feeling afraid.  I am not saying that we should be fearful or afraid or proceed imprudently without fear.  To have courage implies leaving our comfort zone and trying to do something that would change not only you but also those around you.  Today the Word of God speaks about being strong and courageous, which means:  knowing how to withstand, resist, and remain calm and patient, and also knowing how to move forward. But…but we have to learn something:  THERE ARE FIGHTS THAT GOD HIMSELF WILL FIGHT.  And, when is it that God acts in this manner?

Many situations in our lives are brought on by ourselves or simply arrive, affecting us and overwhelming our strength.  These are the moments in which God takes direct control of the circumstances.  But when everything is under his control, he will hand the control over to you, hoping that this time you will do things right, as should be, and that you will not be afraid.  This is why he says to you:  “Be strong, be courageous”.

Prayer:  Thank you, Lord, for the security that we find in you.  Help us to be strong and courageous.  Amen.

SI DIOS ESTÁ CONTIGO… ¿QUIÉN CONTRA TI ?

DEUTERONOMIO 31:1-8

Deuteronomio 31:6

Wednesday, October 8 DISCIPLINE IN ORDER TO OBTAIN RESULTS HEBREWS 12:1-12

Wednesday, October 8

Celebration of the Dependent Church of Camagüey

DISCIPLINE IN ORDER TO OBTAIN RESULTS

HEBREWS 12:1-12

“No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.”

Hebrews 12:11

A little over a month ago you may have made some resolutions.  The panorama is different now.  You may have skipped your routine for a day or two, or perhaps you haven’t obtained the desired (or any) results quickly enough, and now you are wondering if it is really worth your while.

But you know that it is worthwhile; you just don’t like to do it.  That “I don’t like to…” is the main culprit behind so many people’s decision to quit exercising or a diet. Allowing our feelings to dictate our behavior is like trying to drive a car with rear wheels.

We also know that when we persevere enough, it doesn’t matter how we feel, we keep moving forward and we work at it, and our feelings will change. They may not change until we have run many miles, or until we have chosen healthy foods.  It may not happen until our energy improves at the end of the day.

Have faith: if you work at it, the results will come.

Now, excuse me while I tie my shoes and go do some exercise.

Prayer: Lord, give us perseverance, which will help us with each new task that we begin in life.  Amen.

Celebración de la Iglesia Dependiente de Camagüey

DISCIPLINA PARA LOGRAR RESULTADOS

HEBREOS 12:1-12

“Ninguna disciplina, en el momento de recibirla,

parece agradable, sino más bien penosa;

Tuesday, October 7 I DON'T KNOW IF I CAN DO THIS JOHN 6:60-71

Tuesday, October 7

I DON’T KNOW IF I CAN DO THIS

JOHN 6:60-71

“On hearing it, many of his disciples said, ‘this is a hard teaching.  Who can accept it?’”

John 6:60.

I’m scared.  I don’t know if I can do this.” Sometimes the words change, but the feeling is the same in those persons who try to recover from an addiction, be it to alcohol, to drugs or to anything else.  The feeling of fear invades them when they see the task before them; the initial reaction is always one of immense grief. Their doubts and fears are understandable.  Those who are trying to recover from an addiction are often told not to worry, that they only need to change one thing:  everything.  Later in their recovery, they see it as an ironic joke, but at the beginning it can be paralyzing.

Really, who among us can or wants to change everything?  It is not surprising that the statistics for success in recovery are so low (particularly at the first try.)

At the beginning of my rehabilitation,  someone said that only two people in my group would be able to do it. I thought that I would be one of them.  One day, I was complaining about how difficult it is to change old habits.  And someone with many more years of recovery than I looked at me, smiled and said:  “Son, if it were easy, everyone would be able to do it.”

Prayer: Lord, help us to encourage those who have the guts to enter into rehabilitation. Amen.

NO SÉ SI LO PODRÉ HACER

JUAN  6: 60-71
