Sunday, December 7 I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD PSALM 119: 105-108

Sunday, December 7
i am the light of the world
pSalm 119: 105-108
“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said ‘I am the light of the world.  Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”
John 8:12
During the period of Advent, the symbol of light occupies a special place.  The Jewish tradition had already consecrated this beautiful metaphor in order to qualify God’s presence. Suffice it to recall the pillar of fire that accompanied the people through the desert during their exodus or the resplendent light on the face of Moses after receiving the Ten Commandments.

The light of Advent, however, is different from others in the history of salvation. This was neither a blinding light such as Moses’ face, nor frightening like the pillar of fire of the exodus. This light shined in the heavens, but descended unto the lowliest.  This light dignified humility and confirmed the greatness of God in the simplicity of a manger.

Today, when speeches, even religious ones, invite us to pomposity, brilliance and ostentation, when we are tempted to be a blinding light as a sign of success; today when the fatuous fires of consumption and banality attempt to change even the gospel itself, we should remember what is the true light for our lives:  Jesus, the light of the world was born to be the definitive brightness.  Let us be inspired by this beautiful song:  The light of the world am I, listen to me, people, and come… Let us follow that light!

Prayer: God, you who are light and life, illumine our path. Grant that we may be able to reflect your light onto those around us. Amen.

la luz del mundo yo soy
Salmo 119: 105-108

Saturday, December 6 Celebration of the Dependent Church of Manguito (San José de los Ramos) JOY TO THE WORLD! MATTHEW 5:1-12

Celebration of the Dependent Church of Manguito (San José de los Ramos)

JOY TO THE WORLD!

MATTHEW 5:1-12
“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”
Matthew 5:5
Carlos is an elderly member of our congregation who never misses a single church event. One particularly rainy night he was the only person present at the start of the bible study.  That day he confessed to me that he lives by himself and that if he doesn’t come to Church he gets bored.  At first I did not at all care for his frank admission: coming to church in order to avoid boredom?  I rapidly fell into judging this brother.  Every time I saw him at a worship service, I had the same thought—he’s coming because he has nothing better to do.
Remembering this happy Christmas carol made me think of Brother Carlos. Would Christmas be a happy time for him? I asked God to forgive me for judging his son Carlos and I prayed fervently for those human beings who most need you, me, all of us, in order to have a merry Christmas.
A few days later I heard that Carlos had spent Christmas with a Christian family who had invited him for dinner and later they all joined in our Christmas Service at our Church.

Prayer:  Lord, we pray for the elderly, the sick, and the lonely in this time of Advent and Christmas. We thank you for the years they have lived and pray that they may continue to count on your company at each moment. Amen.

¡OH SANTÍSIMO, FELICÍSIMO!

MATEO  5:1-12

Friday, December 5 Celebration of the Dependent Church of Guásimas (Varadero) HARK, THE HERALD ANGELS SING HEBREWS 2:1-4

Friday, December 5
Celebration of the Dependent Church of Guásimas (Varadero)

HARK, THE HERALD ANGELS SING

HEBREWS 2:1-4
“Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?”
Hebrews 1:14

When I was a little girl I used to imagine angels as happy round little blondes with wings.   As an adolescent and teenager, I frankly did not believe in them.  As an adult, with its problems and responsibilities, paradoxically, I began to believe and now continue to believe in angels, although of course I no longer imagine them the same way, because that angel who helps us and who appears at any circumstance in our lives comes in every color, age, and gender.

Some time ago I was hospitalized for a cataract operation and I was worried about the postoperative requirements of a great deal of rest and someone to take care of me practically full-time. I thought that there was nobody outside my family I could count on to take care of me…

I admit that I was wrong; not only one, but several angels cared for me in different ways, and I never felt a single burden, and I received all the recommended rest. Today I am able to see perfectly, thanks to God and to the angels that He sent to me during that illness.

Prayer: Our good God, we thank you for the angels that you send us when we most need them. Help us also to be angels in the lives of others.  Amen.

ÁNGELES CANTANDO ESTÁN

HEBREOS  2:1-4

Thursday, December 4 SILENT NIGHT, HOLY NIGHT LUKE 2:1-20

Thursday, December 4

SILENT NIGHT, HOLY NIGHT
LUKE 2:1-20
“So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and the baby, who was lying in the manger.”
Luke 2:16

At that rehearsal, Silvia, a soloist in the Church choir, rendered such an intense interpretation of the Christmas carol “Silent Night,” that there was a long silence at the end, during which the emotion of all those who had been listening could be felt.

That night at home I thought about what that Christmas carol provoked in me, a feeling of sadness and joy at the same time, night of peace, night of love, silent night, holy night…

The melody from this hymn has been known for over two centuries, since its creation at Christmastime; a time of union and good wishes, a time that invites us to put forth our best selves, a time of sharing, of giving, and also a time of nostalgia because it makes us remember those who are no longer with us.

Thank God for this beautiful hymn, for those who wrote it, for all those who have sung it, transmitting its message of peace and of love from one generation to another.

Prayer: God, who danced and sang from the creation of the world, we pray for our brothers and sisters who work in the ministry of music in our Churches.  Make us considerate and grateful for the musical gifts that these persons share in our communities.  We thank you for the lives of those who are no longer with us and who in each liturgical moment made us vibrate with their music or with their songs. Amen.

NOCHE DE PAZ, NOCHE DE AMOR
LUCAS  2:1-20

Wednesday, December 3 Day of Persons with Disabilities COME TO MY HEART, OH CHRIST! GALATIANS 4:1-7

Wednesday, December 3
Day of Persons with Disabilities

COME TO MY HEART, OH CHRIST!
GALATIANS 4:1-7
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”
Philippians 4:4

When we hear that a woman is pregnant, a family member or a friend, the preparations begin:  diapers, toys, a crib, a mattress, baby clothes…and the questions begin as well: what will it be?  Whom will it look like?  What name should we choose?  In any event, it is an entire time of anticipation, of preparation, of dreams, and of hope.

In the period of Advent we prepare ourselves spiritually for the birth of the Child King, imagining God, in human form, there in the manger, because that was the way in which the Lord offered salvation to the world. There is much for us to learn from this incarnation. God reveals himself in the simplicity of a manger and not in the magnificence of a palace.  Let us therefore see God in what is simple, in everyday things, in what is vulnerable…
Let us take advantage of Advent and prepare ourselves for Christmas by opening our hearts to the Lord and taking the good news that God is with us to all creatures.  Let us set aside exclusion, selfishness, fears, resentments and rejoice in the hope of the birth of Immanuel.

Prayer: Come to my heart, Oh Christ! Come, because there is room inside it for you. Amen.

Día de las Personas con Discapacidades

VEN A MI CORAZÓN ¡OH CRISTO!

Tuesday, December 2 CHANGE ME 1 CORINTHIANS 10:23-33

Tuesday, December 2
CHANGE ME

1 CORINTHIANS 10:23-33

“Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others.”
1 Corinthians 10:24

Negotiation is a necessity, according to psychologists and scholars in the field of human relationships; gone are the days of unilateral decisions made within the family—this must be done because I say so and that’s final—.  Negotiation means:  communication, understanding another’s point of view, giving way, admitting when we are wrong, it is forgiving and accepting.

It sounds easy, but we all know how difficult it is to maintain a good relationship with those around us. Sadly, at times we don’t realize that we are the ones who are acting like walls that impede communication and negotiation with another person.

There are several biblical passages that teach us and guide us in the way we should relate to our families, friends and neighbors.  We can search for and meditate upon this issue affecting us all. The discernment and infinite wisdom that come from God are a light in life to be shared and incorporated among ourselves and others.

Prayer: Lord, change me so that I can be a channel through which your love flows toward others.  Give us the wisdom we need to communicate in our homes, in our communities, in our neighborhoods and in our workplaces. Grant that our witness may help others to relate to one another in a peaceful, cooperative and respectful manner.  So be it.

CÁMBIAME A MÍ

1 CORINTIOS  10:23-33

Monday, December 1 Day of Fighting Against AIDS NEW TIMES, NEW DREAMS 1 PETER 3:8-20

Monday, December 1
Day of Fighting Against AIDS

NEW TIMES, NEW DREAMS
1 PETER 3:8-20

“…you have been my hope,
O Sovereign Lord,
My confidence since my youth.”
Psalm 71:5

Maybe next year, something good will happen…that was the refrain from a musical based on a Cuban novel several years ago.  And I recalled these words when December, the last month of the year, began:  a time when quite a few of us begin to make plans for new projects, proposals and goals for next year.

While plans and concrete projects are important, we should also have spiritual desires alongside of them which will help us to live in Christ: serving, giving, sharing, helping, reading, living the Bible, praying, listening more than speaking, understanding more than judging, better using our gifts, smiling more, encouraging the needy, forgiving, evangelizing, respecting, loving…

Let us take advantage of this time that God gives us and in gratitude let us each try to be better disciples without becoming discouraged, because He has promised to be with us every day until the end of time.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for being in my life, in my time, in my personal history. On this day today we pray for those who are living with HIV and for their families.  Help us to do whatever we can to end this disease.  Grant that we be less judgmental and more loving. Amen.

Día de la lucha contra el SIDA

NUEVOS TIEMPOS, NUEVOS SUEÑOS
1 PEDRO  3:8-20

“…pues tú, Señor, desde mi juventud
eres mi esperanza y mi seguridad.”
Salmo 71:5
