THE HUMILITY THAT DRAWS US CLOSER TO GOD

PSALM 32

I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go;

I will counsel you with my eye upon you.

Psalm 32:8

Scarcely have we begun our journey in life when we find that we have to meet social expectations that do not allow us to admit failure. Many of us succumb to the demands of a standard of perfection that lacks any correspondence between what we really want to do and what we carry out. We have such fear of doing something wrong, of seeming disoriented or ignorant, that we prefer to shut others out of our lives and to hide our errors.

However, admitting our failures and inabilities allows God to approach us and accompany us toward the fullness of our humanity. We must take hope that God will teach us, show us the way, advise us and watch over us.

Let us be humble, and a door will open that draws us in a sure and certain way to the God of our journey.

Prayer: Lord, grant us the ability to admit our errors and to draw closer to you. Produce in us a thirst for learning and protect us from evil.  Amen.

LA HUMILDAD QUE ACERCA A DIOS

SALMO  32

El Señor dice: Yo te instruiré, yo te mostraré el camino que debes seguir; yo te daré consejos y velaré por ti.

Salmo 32: 8

Apenas hemos comenzado a caminar en la vida y ya debemos satisfacer las expectativas sociales de que no nos equivoquemos.

Muchos de nosotros sucumbimos a las exigencias de un estándar de perfección y vivimos una vida falta de coincidencia entre lo que realmente deseamos hacer y lo que llevamos a cabo.

Tememos tanto equivocarnos, mostrarnos desorientados o desconocedores, que preferimos cerrar nuestras vidas a los demás y ocultar nuestros errores.

Sin embargo, reconocer nuestros errores e incapacidades permite a Dios acercarse y acompañarnos hacia la plenitud de nuestra humanidad.

Debemos tener esperanza en que Dios nos instruirá, nos mostrará el camino, nos aconsejará y velará por nosotros.

Seamos humildes y se abrirá para nosotros una puerta que nos acerca de manera real y certera al Dios del camino.

Oración: Señor, pon en nosotros la capacidad de reconocer nuestros errores y acércanos a ti. Prodúcenos sed de aprendizaje y protégenos del mal. Amén

THE HOPE OF THE POOR

PSALM 9

For the needy shall not always be forgotten,

nor the hope of the poor perish forever

Psalm 9:18

After several decades in which we regarded as a fact that we were all equal and that we were in the same condition, we have stumbled upon the actual reality that it isn’t that way. Now we are assailed with the fact that in our country there is poverty and there are poor people, and that we all live in different socio-economic conditions. Many of us have feared that our vision of life would be tarnished by this reality, having preferred to deny it or to remain indifferent in the midst of our secure spaces and well-stocked supplies.

However, the Psalm shows that for God, poverty is an opportunity to reveal himself and for us to be engaged with those in need. The psalmist tells us that hope is everlasting, but not poverty and need. We trust in a God of justice who always sets as a priority the poorest and most vulnerable. The statements of Jesus confirm this.

God is motivated to move toward his people because of our scarcity, not only encouraging us but also feeding us.

Prayer: Lord, I ask you to come into the midst of our poverty and to nourish our existence. Allow us to recognize the hunger of others and to be willing to feed them. Amen.

LA ESPERANZA DE LOS POBRES

SALMO 9

Pero no se olvidará para siempre al necesitado,

ni para siempre se perderá la esperanza del pobre

Salmo 9:18

Después de varias décadas en las que dábamos por hecho que todos éramos iguales y que estábamos en las mismas condiciones, hemos tropezado con la sincera realidad de que no es así.

Hoy nos asalta el hecho de que en nuestro país existen la pobreza y los pobres, de que todos tenemos condiciones socioeconómicas diferentes.

Muchos hemos temido empañar nuestra visión  de la vida con esta realidad, hemos preferido negarla o ser indiferentes, en medio de nuestros espacios seguros y abastecidos.

Sin embargo, el salmo expone que para Dios, la pobreza es una oportunidad de manifestación y para nosotros de compromisos con los necesitados.

Nos dice el salmista que la esperanza es perpetua, no así la pobreza y la necesidad.

Confiamos en un Dios de justicia que siempre ha hecho de los más pobres y vulnerables su prioridad. El testimonio de Jesús así lo confirma.

Dios camina hacia su pueblo motivado por nuestra escasez; no sólo lo alienta, sino que también lo alimenta.

Oración: Señor, te pido que llegues en medio de nuestra pobreza y alimentes nuestra existencia. Permite que reconozcamos el hambre de otros y que nos dispongamos a alimentarlos. Amén.

UNTIL IT RAINS

1 KINGS 17:7 - 16

For thus says the LORD the God of Israel:

The jar of meal will not be emptied and the jug of oil will not fail

until the day that the LORD sends rain on the earth."

1 Kings 17: 14

God commands sharing as an expression of faith in Him, sharing even the last thing we have–  not to let us die, but so that our life may guarantee the lives of others. It is difficult to give away what is scarce, whether it is food, medicine, or whatever article of primary need. Our first thought is that if we were ever to need it, we wouldn’t have it because we’ve already given it away.

Sometimes people ask me for medicines that are not always within reach, and although, I must admit, with a little fear, I will share it with them. But it is in this sharing that the miracle happens, by feeding someone who needs us and trusting in the promise of food that comes from God. And then hope arrives, as a murmur that calms our hunger and drives us to confidently give away all that we have left.

Prayer: Lord, give us enough confidence in your promises to share in the midst of scarcity. Amen.

HASTA QUE  LLUEVA

1 REYES 17: 7 - 16

Porque así dice el Señor, Dios de Israel:

No se agotará la harina de la tinaja ni se acabará el aceite del jarro hasta el día en que el Señor haga llover sobre la tierra.

1 Reyes 17: 14

Dios ordena compartir como expresión de nuestra fe en Él. Compartir aún lo último que nos queda, no para dejarnos morir sino para que nuestra vida cobre el sentido de garantizar la vida de otros.

Es difícil regalar algo que escasea, ya sea un alimento, un medicamento o cualquier otro artículo de primera necesidad. Nuestro primer pensamiento es que si lo llegáramos a necesitar, ya no lo tendremos porque lo hemos dado.

A veces las personas me preguntan por medicamentos que no siempre están al alcance de la mano y aunque con un poco de temor, lo confieso, yo los comparto. Pero es en ese compartir que ocurre el milagro, en alimentar a alguien que nos necesita y confiar en la promesa de alimento que viene de Dios.

Llega entonces la esperanza, como un soplo que calma nuestra hambre  y nos impulsa a dar confiadamente lo último que nos queda.

Oración: Señor, danos la suficiente confianza en tus promesas para compartir en medio de la escasez. Amén

STRIKE THE ROCK

EXODUS 17:1-7

I will be standing there in front of you on the rock at Horeb.

Strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink.

Exodus 17, 6a

A very common occurrence these days is a spirit of defeat, the feeling that nothing makes sense, that the attempt to struggle to change what is bad isn’t worth the effort because forces stronger than our own will prevent it.

Maybe, like the people of Israel, we are living in the middle of a desert with our lives turned into something dry and arid. Nevertheless, we can ask ourselves what to do, just as Moses did. The text shows us that first we must draw close to God and move toward solutions that are within our reach. It is necessary to listen to God, to direct our steps toward the good, toward the search for solutions and toward engagement with them.

Each one of us is a rock, from which can sprout hope, encouragement, reconciliation, deliverance, struggles, joys and dreams.

Prayer: Lord, summon us to strike dry rocks and closed hearts. Cause us to find the water of life in the midst of a world where there seems to be no love.  Amen.

GOLPEA LA ROCA

ÉXODO 17:1-7

Yo estaré esperándote junto a la roca que está en Horeb.

Aséstale un golpe a la roca, y de ella brotará agua

para que beba el pueblo.

Algo muy común en nuestros días es el espíritu de derrota, el criterio de que nada tiene sentido, que no valen la pena los intentos de lucha por cambiar lo que está mal, porque fuerzas superiores a las nuestras lo van a impedir.

Al igual que el pueblo de Israel quizás nosotros estemos viviendo en medio de un desierto, con vidas convertidas en algo seco y árido. Sin embargo, aún podemos preguntarnos qué hacer, como lo hizo Moisés.

El texto nos responde que primero debemos acercarnos a Dios, movernos hacia soluciones que estén a nuestro alcance. Es preciso escuchar a Dios, encaminar nuestros pasos al bien, a la búsqueda de soluciones y al compromiso con estas.

Cada uno de nosotros es una roca, de la que pueden brotar esperanza, aliento, reconciliación, entrega, lucha, alegrías y sueños.

Oración:Señor, convócanos a golpear piedras secas y corazones cerrados. Haz que encontremos agua de vida en medio de un mundo que aparentemente está desierto de amor. Amén.

MY BELOVED CHURCH

ACTS 16:1-5

So the churches were strengthened in the faith

and increased in numbers daily.

Acts 16:5

Lord, you have put me in a very special family where I receive the love and support of brothers and sisters. You have placed me in a wonderful body where every member contributes for the benefit of the others. You have made me a part of a new community that transcends barriers of race, culture and social level: your Church. How grateful I am to be a part of it!

I know that you are pleased when we gather to study your Word and praise your name. We honor you in taking part in Communion at your Table. The sharing between us and the demonstration of your love in our service also pleases you. You take joy when we fulfill your command to proclaim the Gospel and to make disciples.

I await the glorious day when you present your perfect Church without spot or wrinkle. Meanwhile, how beautiful it is when I join my voice with those of my brothers and sisters in Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs! As in the ancient Church, let us be confirmed in the faith to worship you as only you deserve; may our community grow in numbers according to your will.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for having placed me in my congregation. Let me be at ease there, working with everyone, respecting one another despite our differences, for the good of your work. Amen.

MI QUERIDA IGLESIA

HECHOS 16:1-5

Así que las iglesias eran confirmadas en la fe,

y aumentaban en número cada día.

Hechos 16:5

Señor, tú me has puesto en una familia muy especial, donde encuentro el  amor y el apoyo de los hermanos y hermanas.

Me has colocado en un maravilloso cuerpo en el cual cada miembro contribuye para el beneficio de los demás.

Me has hecho parte de un nuevo pueblo que traspasa las barreras de raza, cultura y nivel social que es tu Iglesia y ¡Cuánto agradezco el inmenso privilegio de ser parte de ella!

Sé que te agradamos al reunirnos para estudiar tu Palabra y alabar tu nombre. Te honramos al participar en tu Mesa. La comunión entre nosotros y la demostración  de tu amor en nuestro servicio también te complacen. Te gozas cuando cumplimos tu mandato de proclamar el Evangelio y hacer discípulos. Espero el día glorioso cuando presentarás a tu Iglesia perfecta  sin mancha ni arruga.

Mientras tanto, ¡Qué hermoso es unir mi voz a las de mis hermanos en Salmos, himnos y cánticos espirituales!

Que como en la Iglesia antigua, podamos ser confirmados en la fe, para adorarte como sólo tú mereces; y sea aumentada nuestra comunidad en número, según tú quieras que sea.

Oración: Gracias Señor, por haberme colocado en mi congregación. Permíteme estar a gusto en ella, trabajando con todos, respetándonos a pesar de nuestras diferencias, por el bien de tu obra. Amén.

GOD GOES WITH US

GENESIS 46:1-4

I myself will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also bring you up again.

Genesis 46:4a

Drought and famine motivated the separation of the family in this biblical story. In a similar manner, many families today have been separated by economic and political factors. Over the years, for many of us, the face of one who has gone away has remained solely in our memories, with only a slim possibility of their return and of embracing them again.

In the midst of this uncertainty the promise of God arises as a response to our grief over the separation from our loved one. It promises nourishment and reunion. Then a feeling of confidence washes over us, that God goes with us in the midst of famine and separation. God allows the family to overcome their separation through yearning for reunion and familial remembrance.

God is also our reconciliation and our accompaniment in our goings and our comings as well as in those of our loved ones.

Prayer: God, our God, we ask that you open our eyes to your presence and that you grant the reunion of families who have been separated.  Amen.

DIOS NOS ACOMPAÑA

GÉNESIS  46: 1 - 4

Yo te acompañaré a Egipto, y yo mismo haré que vuelvas

Génesis  46: 4a

La sequía y el hambre motivaron la separación de la familia en esta narración bíblica.  De manera similar muchas de nuestras familias se han separado por razones económicas y políticas.

Durante años en muchos de nosotros el rostro del que se fue tan solo ha quedado en la memoria, sin muchas posibilidades de volver a abrazarlo nuevamente.

En medio de esa incertidumbre llega, como respuesta a nuestro dolor ante la distancia del ser querido, la promesa de Dios. Este garantiza el alimento y el reencuentro.

Nos inunda entonces una sensación de confianza en que Dios nos acompaña, en medio del hambre y la separación. Dios permite que la familia venza la separación mediante el deseo del reencuentro y la memoria familiar.

Dios es también reconciliación y nos acompaña en nuestras salidas y entradas y en las de nuestros seres queridos.

Oración: Dios nuestro, te pedimos que abras nuestros ojos a tu compañía y que permitas el reencuentro de las familias que se han separado. Amén

WALKING TOGETHER

ACTS 2: 42-47

 All who believed were together and had all things in common.

Acts 2: 44

What community has not gone through difficult situations?

Many of us have a yearning for a Church that is committed to the celebration of a common faith, like the one described in Acts. Those believers showed a generous attitude toward sharing and living in community.  Wherever and whenever they gathered, their lives were a visible sign of unity through Jesus Christ: They were together!

We are able to say that we are together when we worry about and care for each other, when we are family and love each other, even though we may think differently. We are together when we think that there is something of me in you and something of you in me.

Like those first Christians, we also will endure conflicts, but it is necessary to resolve them to achieve harmony without rancor or suspicion. A community should walk together in diversity and allow nothing to hinder the unity that is motivated by faith.

Prayer: Father, we ask you to put in our hearts the disposition to live together and the strength to walk through life united with others. Amen.

CAMINANDO JUNTOS

HECHOS 2: 42-47

Todos los creyentes estaban juntos y tenían todo en común.

¿Qué comunidad no ha transitado por situaciones difíciles?

En muchos de nosotros existe el anhelo por una Iglesia comprometida con la celebración de la fe común, como la que se nos describe en Hechos.

Aquellos creyentes mostraban una actitud generosa en cuanto a compartir y vivir en comunidad, se reunían en cualquier lugar para compartir sus vidas, signo visible de unidad por medio de Jesucristo: ¡Estaban juntos!

Podemos decir que estamos juntos cuando nos preocupamos y ocupamos del otro, cuando somos familia y nos queremos, aunque pensemos de manera diferente. Estamos juntos cuando pensamos que hay algo de mí en ti y algo tuyo en mí.

Como los primeros cristianos, nosotros también viviremos conflictos, pero es necesario resolverlos para pasar a la armonía, sin rencores, ni recelos.

Una comunidad debe caminar junta en la diversidad y no dejar que algo impida la unidad que es motivada por la fe.

Oración: Padre, te pedimos que pongas en nuestros corazones la disposición a la convivencia y la fuerza para caminar por la vida junto a otros. Amén.
