BY THE LIGHT OF A STAR

MATTHEW 2:1-12

When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy.

Matthew 2:10

A few nights ago, my six year old daughter looking at the sky said to me, “Look, mama. There’s the star of the Wise Men. Do you see it there?” Her discovery touched me because it made me look at the sky, contemplate the stars, and allowed me to be surprised by the language of God through his creation – things which with my busy life I don’t make time. Suddenly I thought of those daily signs of God which we scarcely perceive: the love of children, the emotion wrought by a song, the time around the table with family or friends, the words of hope from a sick person who lifted your day.  How many messages do we experience almost routinely without realizing that they are the greatness of God made manifest in the small and routine?

Today, on the day of the manifestation or epiphany of the Lord, let us be joined to those wise men of the East who traveled a long way following the light of a star. Upon accepting this invitation they found a God who was born in the midst of death, of uncertainty and the lust for power of a wicked king. What an enormous message of hope! Moreover, let us listen to the voice of the little ones of the household, since they will surely reveal God made manifest in the simple and the immense, in the routine and the special, in life itself.

Prayer: Thank you, good and gracious God, for smiling on us from the light of a star, from the hug of a friend, from the smile of our children, from the beauty of life in all its fullness. Amen.

TRAS LA LUZ DE UNA ESTRELLA

MATEO 2:1-12

Y al ver la estrella, se regocijaron con muy grande gozo

Mateo 2:10

Hace unas cuantas noches, mi hija de seis años me dijo mirando al cielo: mira mamá es la estrella de los sabios ¿ves allá?

Su descubrimiento me emocionó, porque  me hizo mirar al cielo, contemplar las estrellas y dejarme sorprender por el lenguaje de Dios a través de su creación. Cosas a las que ya, con mi ajetreada vida, no les dedico tiempo. De pronto pensé en esas manifestaciones cotidianas de Dios que apenas percibimos: el amor de los hijos, la emoción ante un canto, el tiempo alrededor de la mesa con la familia o los amigos, las palabras de esperanza de una persona enferma que te levanta el día… ¿Cuántos mensajes que vivimos casi que rutinariamente, sin darnos cuenta que es la grandeza de Dios manifestándose en lo pequeño y cotidiano?

Hoy, en el día de la manifestación o epifanía del Señor, dejémonos convocar por esos sabios del Oriente, que recorren un largo camino, tras la luz de una estrella. Al aceptar esta invitación, ellos encuentran un Dios que ha nacido en medio de la muerte, la incertidumbre y las ansias de poder de un rey malvado. ¡Qué tremendo mensaje de esperanza! Escuchemos además la voz de las pequeñas y pequeños de la casa, pues irremediablemente nos descubrirán a ese Dios manifestado en lo sencillo e inmenso, en lo cotidiano y especial, en la vida misma.

Oración: Gracias Dios bueno, porque nos sonríes desde la luz de una estrella, desde el abrazo de una amiga, desde la sonrisa de nuestros hijos, desde la belleza de la vida en toda su plenitud. Amén

DANIEL 6:26-27

Daniel 6:27

It is estimated that there are millions and millions of galaxies. And each galaxy, like the Milky Way to which our sun belongs with its nine planets, contains an innumerable quantity of stars singly or in groups. One galaxy contains tens of millions of suns. Our sun is only a star of medium size. There are stars that can be thousands of times bigger than our sun.

In the same way there are wonders on this earth. For example, the threads with which the spider weaves its web are the result of the work of thousands of glands which the animal possesses. Subject to a strong tension, they produce a liquid which consolidates and binds those thousands of little threads together.

But without a doubt the greatest of all marvels is that the Creator of the heavens and the earth has come to this world taking human form. He came to earth in order to save all those who believe in Him, thus bearing all our sins.

If we know the greatness of the Lord’s grace, of his forgiveness, and his peace, we can feel a great joy in our hearts.

Prayer: Thank you for your company, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Thank you for continually showing yourself to us with great signs. Allow us to live mindful of them. Amen.

… hace señales y maravillas en el cielo y en la tierra

Se estima que existen millones de millones de galaxias, y cada galaxia, como la Vía Láctea, a la cual pertenece nuestro sol con sus nueve planetas, contiene una incontable  cantidad de estrellas solas o en grupos. Una galaxia tiene unos diez millones de soles. Nuestro sol es tan sólo una estrella de mediano tamaño. Hay estrellas que pueden llegar a ser miles de veces más grandes que nuestro sol.

Asimismo, en esta tierra la creación está llena de prodigios. Por ejemplo, los hilos con los cuales la araña teje su tela, son el resultado del trabajo de unas 1000 glándulas que posee este animal. Sometidas a una fuerte tensión, producen un líquido que se consolida y esos miles de hilitos se juntan.

Pero sin duda, la más grande de todas las maravillas es que el Creador de los cielos y la tierra haya venido a este mundo, tomando forma humana. llegó a la tierra para salvar a todos los que en Él creen, cargando así con todos nuestros pecados.

Si conocemos ya la grandeza de la gracia del Señor, de su perdón y su paz, podemos sentir un gran gozo en nuestro corazón.

Oración: Gracias por tu compañía Dios Padre, Dios Hijo y Dios Espíritu. Gracias porque continuamente te manifiestas a nosotros con poderosas y grandes señales. Permite que vivamos atentos a ellas. Amén.

I used to live thinking of special occasions until I was impressed by the testimony of a friend. His wife died and then he found among her things a piece of jewelry that she had kept to wear on a special occasion. But she had died before she could use it. I remember my friend’s words: “Never keep anything for a special occasion. Every day you live is a special occasion.”

I still think of how these words have changed my life.  I understand that life is a series of experiences to learn from and to enjoy, not something to survive. I keep nothing, I use the best glasses every day. I put on new clothes to go to work. I no longer save my best cologne for the best occasions; I use it whenever I want to.  The phrases, “Someday” and “One of these days” has disappeared from my vocabulary.

If it’s worth doing now . . . why wait? I don’t know what the wife of my friend would have done if she had known that she would not be here tomorrow. I believe she would have called her family and her closest friends; at best she would have called old friends to apologize for old quarrels. . . . I like to think that she would have gone to a special place with her family.

There are little things left undone that would bother me if I knew I had only a few hours left to live. It would disturb me because I would forego seeing those friends that I would see “one of these days” . . .  I would be annoyed at myself for not writing those cards that I wanted to write “someday” . . .  Now I try not to save anything that would add laughter and joy to our lives. . . .   Every day I tell myself that this is a special day. Every day, every hour, every minute is special.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for the day which you have gifted to me today. Help me to enjoy it without thinking of tomorrow. Amen.

Todo lo que te venga a mano para hacer

hazlo según tus fuerzas

Eclesiastés 9:10

Antes vivía pensando en las ocasiones especiales, hasta que me impactó el testimonio de un amigo. Su esposa falleció y luego él encontró entre sus cosas una prenda de vestir que ella había guardado para una ocasión especial. Pero ella falleció antes de que pudiera usarla. Recuerdo las palabras de mi amigo: “nunca guardes nada para una ocasión especial, cada día que vives es una ocasión especial”. Todavía pienso cómo me han cambiado la vida estas palabras. He entendido que la vida es un conjunto de experiencias para aprender y disfrutar, no para sobrevivir. No guardo nada. Uso los mejores vasos todos los días. Me pongo el vestido nuevo para ir al trabajo. Ya no guardo mi mejor colonia para fiestas especiales, la uso todas las veces que quiero. Las frases “Un día...” y “uno de estos días...” han desaparecido de mi vocabulario.

Si merece la pena hacerlo ahora…. ¿por qué esperar? No sé lo que habría hecho la mujer de mi amigo si hubiese sabido que no estaría aquí mañana. Creo que habría llamado a sus familiares y sus amigos más íntimos; a lo mejor habría llamado a viejos amigos para disculparse por viejas peleas.... Me gusta pensar que habría salido a un lugar especial para compartir con la familia.

Son estas pequeñas cosas no hechas las que me molestarían
si supiera que tengo las horas contadas. Molesta porque dejaría de ver a los amigos que vería “uno de estos días” .... Molesta por no escribir esas cartas que quería escribir “algún día” ... Ahora intento no guardar nada que añadiría risa y alegría a nuestras vidas.... Cada día me digo a mí misma que éste es un día especial. Cada día, cada hora, cada minuto es especial.

Oración: Gracias Señor, por el día que me regalas hoy. Ayúdame a disfrutarlo sin pensar en el mañana. Amén.

PSALM 27

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?

Psalm 27:1

They say that once a man was pursued by villains who wanted to kill him. He hid in a cave. The criminals began to search for him in the caves where they used to find him. So in desperation he raised a prayer to God in the following way: “All powerful God, send two angels down and cover the entrance so that they can’t come in and kill me.” At that moment he heard the men approaching his cave and he saw what appeared to be a spider. The spider began to weave a web at the entrance.

The man resumed his prayer, this time much more worried: “Lord, I asked for angels, not a spider.” He continued, “Lord, please with your powerful hand put a wall in the entrance so that the men cannot come in and kill me.” He opened his eyes hoping to see a wall covering the entrance and saw the spider weaving its web. When the villains got to the front of the cave where the man was, the spider had already covered the entrance. This was the conversation he heard:

“Come on. Let’s go into this cave.”

“No. Don’t you see that there is a spider web? No one has entered this cave.  Let’s keep on looking in the others.”

God, like a loving Father and Mother, knows perfectly what is the appropriate response for each situation with which we are presented. To expect that our prayers should be answered according to our rules is to detract from the power of God who knows not only what makes us happiest but also what is most appropriate for our lives.

Prayer: O Lord, don’t let our human eyes fail to appreciate your divine works, even though we often don’t understand them. Amen.

SALMO 27

Jehová es mi luz y salvación; ¿de quien temeré?

Salmo 27:1

Dicen que una vez un hombre era perseguido por varios malhechores que querían matarlo. El hombre entró a una cueva. Los malhechores empezaron a buscarlo por las cuevas anteriores a la que él se encontraba. Con tal desesperación elevó una plegaria a Dios, de la siguiente manera: "Dios todopoderoso, haz que dos ángeles bajen y tapen la entrada, para que no entren a matarme". En ese momento escuchó a los hombres acercándose a su cueva y vio que apareció una arañita.   La arañita empezó a tejer una telaraña en la entrada. El hombre volvió a elevar otra plegaria, esta vez más angustiado: "Señor te pedí ángeles, no una araña." Y continuó: "Señor por favor, con tu mano poderosa coloca un muro fuerte en la entrada para que los hombres no puedan entrar a matarme".  Abrió los ojos esperando ver el muro tapando la entrada, y observó a la arañita tejiendo la telaraña. Cuando los malhechores estuvieron frente a la cueva que se encontraba el hombre, ya la arañita había tapado toda la entrada, entonces se escuchó esta conversación:

- “Vamos, entremos a esta cueva”.

- “No, no ves que hasta hay telarañas, nadie ha entrado en esta cueva. Sigamos buscando en las demás”.

Dios, como Padre y Madre amorosa, sabe perfectamente cuál es la respuesta apropiada para cada situación que se nos presenta.  Esperar que nuestras plegarias sean atendidas de acuerdo con nuestras reglas es desmerecer el poder de Dios, que sabe no sólo qué nos hará más felices, sino también, qué es más conveniente para nuestra vida.

Oración: Oh Señor, no permitas que nuestros ojos humanos dejen de apreciar tus obras divinas, aunque muchas veces no las entendamos. Amén.

SAYING ‘YES’ TO GOD IN THIS NEW YEAR

LUKE 1:46-55

Then Mary said, "Here am I, the servant of the Lord;

let it be with me according to your word.

Luke 1: 38

At the start of a new year, one character inevitably comes to mind for me: Mary, the mother of Jesus.

It’s less than a month since we celebrated Christmas, and the person in the story of the nativity with whom I most identify is Mary.  Why? This girl, supposedly lacking in life experience, not yet married, was very young; nevertheless, she upsets our prejudices and assumptions about youth to show us a responsible attitude in the face of a new task in life.

Furthermore, she was a woman. We almost always focus on the prophets – men – who announced the coming of the Messiah. Nevertheless she, like every prophetess, recalls an ancient song and raises her voice to denounce injustice and to announce hope. Mary runs against all human logic and incarnates the logic of divinity.

At the start of a new year of working in our congregations, let us listen to our youth, to our women and their prophetic songs. Let us say “Yes” to God in the face of his call, recognizing how much illogic we have in our attitudes per God’s will. Let us assume with commitment and maturity new plans, new births which lie ahead of us.

Prayer: Lord, we ask for justice, that at the beginning of this year you fill us with strength to confront every challenge. Help us also to recognize those women who are like Mary today. Equip us with that fidelity which we test each day of our lives.  Amen.

EL SÍ A DIOS EN ESTE NUEVO AÑO

LUCAS 1:46-55

Entonces María dijo: He aquí la sierva del Señor;

hágase conmigo conforme a tu palabra

Al comenzar un nuevo año, irremediablemente un personaje viene a mi mente: María, la madre de Jesús.

Hace menos de un mes celebramos la navidad en nuestras comunidades y el personaje de la historia del nacimiento con el que más me idéntico es con María ¿Por qué? Esta muchacha, supuestamente apenas tenía experiencia de la vida, no estaba casada aún, era muy joven, sin embargo ella echa por tierra nuestros prejuicios y suposiciones acerca de la juventud al mostrar una actitud responsable ante un nuevo proyecto de vida. Ella era, además, mujer. Casi siempre destacamos a los profetas hombres que anuncian la llegada del Mesías. Sin embargo ella, como toda una profetisa, evoca un antiguo cántico y eleva su voz para denunciar la injusticia y anunciar la esperanza. María va contra toda lógica humana y encarna la lógica divina.

Al comenzar un nuevo año de trabajo en nuestras congregaciones, escuchemos a los jóvenes, a las mujeres y sus cantos proféticos, demos el sí a Dios ante su llamado, reconozcamos cuánto de ilógico tienen nuestras actitudes según la voluntad de Dios. Asumamos con compromiso y madurez los nuevos proyectos, los nuevos nacimientos que tenemos por delante.

Oración: Te pedimos Dios de justicia, que al comenzar este año nos llenes de fuerzas para enfrentar cada reto. Queremos ser fieles a tu llamado. Ayúdanos a reconocer también a las Marías de hoy. Acompáñanos con esa fidelidad que experimentamos cada día de nuestras vidas. Amén

IN THE NEW YEAR

GALATIANS 3:22-28

 . . .it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me.

Galatians 2:20a

Today is the first day of the year, a time that is always favorable for looking in two important directions: one goes toward the past time that we have lived, and the other lifts the future that has not yet occurred, that is yet to come.

As concerns the past we receive a great lesson: an experience which is full of events and incidents and which lives in memory. Concerning the days which have yet to come, there is always the ardent desire to accomplish the best in life, and that life will give us the best that there is.

However, it is true that this time of a new year in the Christian life should not be just any time but one of deep reflection so that as believers we may have within us the best way of thinking, the most favorable balance, in order that we may spontaneously have a heartfelt and sincere evolution and may leave behind what is useless and disagreeable, the lost hours and negative acts. Let us fill our life with experiences of renewal and pardon.  But of course, considering everything, there is the hopeful intention of making our Lord Jesus Christ the center of life. Thus, the past and the future will hold for us the best lessons, and we can sustain ourselves in Him so that we can wisely evaluate the past and look toward the future with faith.

Prayer: God, our God, at the ending of one year and the beginning of another, there is in both a word of gratitude for your blessings in the time gone by. You have been loving and good.  Now we pray for your presence in us for everything that we have left in this life until we arrive in your presence for eternity. Amen.

Año Nuevo

EN EL AÑO NUEVO

GÁLATAS 3:22-28

Con Cristo estoy juntamente crucificado

y ya no vivo yo, mas vive Cristo en mí...

Gálatas 2:20a

Hoy es el primer día del año, momento siempre propicio para dos miradas importantes: una que va al tiempo pasado que hemos vivido, y otra que se eleva en el futuro que ha de venir, que está por llegar.

En lo que concierne al ayer ganamos una gran lección: la experiencia de todo lo que fue cargado de hechos, de incidentes que viven en el recuerdo. Sobre los días que han de venir, siempre el deseo más ferviente de lograr lo mejor para la vida, de aspirar a que la vida nos prodigue lo mejor que pueda existir.

Pero es lo cierto que esta época de año nuevo en la vida cristiana no debe ser momento cualquiera, sino de honda reflexión para que como creyentes haya en nosotros los mejores pensamientos, el balance más positivo. Para que tengamos espontáneamente una evolución sentida y sincera, y pueda quedar atrás lo inútil y desagradable, las horas perdidas o acciones negativas. Llenemos nuestra vida con experiencias de renovación y perdón. Por supuesto, a la luz de todo, hay un propósito esperanzador de hacer de nuestro Señor Jesucristo el centro de la vida. Así, el pasado y el futuro tendrán las mejores lecciones y podremos sustentarnos en Él, para sabiamente valorar el pasado y esperar con fe en el futuro.

Oración: Dios nuestro, al terminar un año y comenzar el nuevo, hay en todos una palabra de gratitud por tus bendiciones en el tiempo transcurrido. Tú has sido amoroso y bueno. Ahora rogamos tu presencia en nosotros, por todo lo que nos queda en esta vida, hasta lograr tu compañía por la eternidad. Amén.

Introduction

A new year of encounter and of reflection on the living Word of God begins. This is an invitation to take a break from the many activities and worries that surround us in our daily lives. It will be necessary to reflect, meditate, pray, feel, to allow ourselves to be challenged by biblical wisdom and to share these experiences in the domain of family and community. This experience will be a special opportunity to cultivate family unity and to show ourselves as the conscience of those with whom we live. It’s not enough to just be around each other; we must learn to live together, to express our feelings and warmth to those around us. We lovingly invite you to use this devotional every day in the assurance that it will gradually change our way of thinking and our behavior wherever we are.

Presentación

Comienza un nuevo año de encuentro y reflexión en torno a la Palabra viva de Dios. Esta es una invitación a hacer un alto  en las muchas  ocupaciones  y preocupaciones que envuelven nuestra vida diaria. Será necesario reflexionar, meditar, orar,  sentir, dejarnos desafiar por la sabiduría bíblica y compartir estas experiencias en el ámbito familiar y comunitario. Será esta experiencia  una oportunidad especial  para cultivar  la unidad  familiar y sobre todo una oportunidad para conocernos mejor y asomarnos a la conciencia de aquellos con quienes convivimos. No basta con vivir juntos, es preciso aprender a convivir, a expresar nuestros sentimientos y simpatía hacia los seres que nos rodean. Sólo el amor de Dios  y la prédica redentora de Jesucristo puede ayudarnos a encarar  los conflictos que nos rodean.  Te invitamos amorosamente a usar diariamente este Devocionario con la seguridad de que paulatinamente cambiará nuestra manera de pensar para actuar dondequiera que estemos.
