Friday, June 7 THE ABNORMALITY OF THE GOSPEL MARK 1:4-11

Friday, June 7
THE ABNORMALITY OF THE GOSPEL
MARK 1:4-11

For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing,
but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
1 Corinthians 1:18 (NRSV)
“Normality” in life is almost always a gray zone dotted with small anecdotes: a family struggle, a need for refuge in alcohol, a daily act of violence, a history of infidelity of a couple or a friendship . . . in short, a story that is always gray.
But one day we stopped "being normal," as Jesus also stopped. A day when, awakened and burned by the spirit, we assume our baptism and change course. We say goodbye to the normality of the world and are converted to the abnormality of the Gospel. We say goodbye to the passionate calls of the flesh and are converted to the passion for God’s Reign. We say goodbye to the crazy life of the old person and are converted to the life of the new person in the Spirit. We say goodbye to the bondage to vices and are converted to the freedom of God’s children.
The baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan was, in so many words both human and Christian, the day of his conversion. Can you say the same about yourself with respect to your baptism? How long must you wait? God wants it to be now. But what about you?

Prayer: Lord, increase our faith and our confidence in the transforming power of the baptism that we have already received. In Christ’s name, Amen.

LA ANORMALIDAD DEL EVANGELIO
MARCOS 1:4-11

La palabra de la cruz es locura a los que se pierden;

Thursday, June 6 OUR DAILY BREAD EXODUS 16:1-5

Thursday, June 6
OUR DAILY BREAD
EXODUS 16:1-5

Then the LORD said to Moses,
“I am going to rain bread from heaven for you. . .”
Exodus 16:4 (NRSV)
Since ancient times, bread has been humanity’s great problem. Food has moved us to previously unknown regions, has driven us to great discoveries, and has even led to death in search of new ways. In the Bible, God is recognized as the giver of food, even when with difficulty we extract it from the bowels of the earth, and with the same certainty of those who saw it fall from heaven every day as manna.
In the passage which we read today Jesus uses this human need for bread as an appropriate figure of what he means in each person’s life. He said, “I am the bread of life . . .”  Being fed by God is a simple metaphor, but no less daring for its simplicity. This is the symbol of the Jesus who is author of our lives and at the same time our sustainer. Being fed by him is his way of uniting us to him, renewing us, restoring us to our true nature.
Now, when bread is scarce in our country, to proclaim Jesus as the bread of life acquires a peculiar nuance charged with hope. So, when we don’t have bread to eat, there is a bread to which we are indissolubly bound, the bread which feeds our life and sustains it: Jesus Christ.

Prayer: Loving God, giver of all that I have, I ask today that you supplement the lack of those who don’t have material bread and of those who have no spiritual bread. Feed us from yourself. Amen.

EL PAN NUESTRO DE CADA DÍA
ÉXODO 16:1-5

Y Jehová dijo a Moisés: He aquí yo

Wednesday, June 5 Earth Day THE TREE AND I MATTHEW 7:15-20

Wednesday, June 5
Earth Day

THE TREE AND I
MATTHEW 7:15-20

They are like trees planted by streams of water,
which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither.
In all that they do, they prosper.
Psalm 1:3 (NRSV)
We know that for a tree to be able to bear fruit, a number of factors have to come together: the sun, the quality of the soil, the weather, water, night. We know that if one of those is lacking, the tree will bear no fruit, or at least there won’t be much.
The Psalmist compares us to a tree. Several elements must be reconciled if the fruit we bear is to reflect holiness. The offering is made by God who pours out grace abundantly on creation. The Lord is sun, the best quality of soil, the weather, water, night. If the tree resists like an old man, the Father’s mercy won’t find a channel to contain it. Sin and death may have aged us so that we can only bear bitter fruit.
The Psalmist makes an offer to us from God: Be happy. Being happy means that we are inseparable from the Lord in such a way that the fruits of holiness will be evident, because we will have as a goal his Kingdom; as a condition the freedom to live as his children; as law the precept of love. And thus, those who pass by the road of our life will say: “Whatever they do, it is well for them!” Let’s keep working for Jesus, the Father’s craftsman, to be like a tree planted by the banks of a river.

Prayer: Lord, we would be like a fruitful tree next to your waters. Give us that gift. Today we pray especially that you make us into guardians and protectors of the environment, knowing that we are responsible for them. Amen.

Día del Medio Ambiente

EL ÁRBOL Y YO
MATEO 7:15-20

Tuesday, June 4 ON THE MOUNTAIN OF THE LORD PSALM 121

Tuesday, June 4
ON THE MOUNTAIN OF THE LORD
PSALM 121
I lift up my eyes to the hills–from where will my help come?
Psalm 121:1 (NRSV)
The idea of identifying God’s greatness with the great heights and high mountains is as old as the Bible itself. Holy Scripture is full of events, many of great importance, in which a mountain is always present. God speaks from the mountains. God is a God of heights. The Psalmist can’t avoid that tradition, and his beautiful poetic expression begins with a call to the mountains in search of the help which comes from the Lord who made the heavens and the earth.
Often in the course of my Christian life I have felt alienated from the Lord, cutting the cord of communication with him. In times like these, I have paid attention to the “glorious trajectory” of humanity which, with pride, tries to climb the highest peaks and moves father and farther away from God. But, also in those times of spiritual lethargy, how often have I felt that all that splendor was insufficient to fill my life. And at those times, as did the Psalmist, I lifted my eyes to the mountains in search of peace; how many blessings have I extracted from that return to the Lord! Let us turn our eyes to the Lord and seek our strength in his wisdom.

Prayer: Lord, help us to love without boundaries, to walk at your side, to serve you every day and to have faith in you. Amen.

EN EL MONTE DEL SEÑOR
SALMO 121

Alzaré mis ojos a los montes; ¿De dónde vendrá mi socorro?
Salmo 121:1

Monday, June 3 THE CORNER FOR DEVOTIONS PSALM 55:4-8

Monday, June 3
THE CORNER FOR DEVOTIONS
PSALM 55:4-8
Oh, that I had wings like a dove!
Psalm 55:6a (NRSV)
A sign of the times in which we live is escapism; that is to say, eagerness to avoid the tasks and responsibilities which overwhelm us in order to turn aside and rest, far from all the clamor of the world. In itself, this idea is sane and healthy. Pausing on the high road when tired, stopping to reflect and recover strength, is a sign of good stewardship of our energy. But there are those who desire to escape reality, for fear of that same reality, in order to ruminate on their anxieties and petty miseries. They are those who are constantly crying out for wings but don’t know how to fly. It was for those people that Enrique Gonzáles wrote his poem: “Alas! Everyone shouts alas, but no one knows how to cast off ballast at the right time . . .” That ballast, that excessive weight of envy and desire for vengeance is what binds many people to a life of gloomy sounds. Only those who can cast off that great weight from their shoulders will be able to fly freely over the blue ocean of illusion, over the sea with unlimited hope. When will we unlock our feet and our hands? When will we clothe the perfect nakedness of our spirit? When will we find the route that marks our liberation?

Prayer: Lord, grant us the rest we need in times of tension and tumult. Don’t allow us to fall into the abyss of despair. Give us wings and strength to fly to you. Allow us to dedicate time for a devotional corner which allows us to hear you and to discover the moment to spread our wings. Amen.

EL RINCÓN DEVOCIONAL
SALMO 55:4-8
¡Quién me diese alas, de paloma!
Salmo 55:6a

Sunday, June 2 Anniversary of the Presbyterian-Reformed Church in Placetas A FAITHFUL REPLY PSALM 120

Sunday, June 2
Anniversary of the Presbyterian-Reformed Church in Placetas

A FAITHFUL REPLY
PSALM 120

In my distress I cried unto the LORD, and he heard me.
Psalm 120:1 (NRSV)
As I began to write these meditations, I remembered the following experience on receiving a letter.
During days of worry about various problems such as the lack of work as well as other necessities, I received a letter with a prayer which frequently forms part of my meditations. It spoke of faith in God’s will in our lives. Then I began to pray intensely every day, putting into each prayer the faith that dwelt in my heart.
I wrote a letter to a former teacher of whom I was very fond, and to my surprise received a response with an invitation and a scholarship grant to study in the United States, which allowed me, on my return to Cuba, to do the work for which I yearned and needed to support myself. In all this, God’s hand was manifest, working in my life through prayer with faith, teaching me that everything is possible for the one who believes. I believe that this experience is worthwhile, because without faith it is impossible to please God.

Prayer: Lord, teach us to pray, and let our prayer be a true encounter with you. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Aniversario IPR de Placetas

UNA RESPUESTA DE FE
SALMO 120

A Jehová clamé estando en angustia, y él me respondió
Salmo 120:1

Saturday, June 1 International Day of the Child LIKE A CHILD LUKE 18:15-17

Saturday, June 1
International Day of the Child

LIKE A CHILD
LUKE 18:15-17

...whoever does not receive the kingdom of God
as a little child will never enter it.
Luke 18:17 (NRSV)
Whenever we praise the qualities of children we mention their ingenuity, but I propose that we revisit those characteristics and experiences in view of the childlike life that God invites us to embrace to enter his Kingdom.
A child trusts his parents; let’s trust God, our Father and our Mother of Life. Children believe all that they hear, and we often say that they are sponges that capture all the knowledge and wisdom of those around them; we believe in God’s Word, and we grasp its teachings. Children don’t worry about tomorrow; let us live the today that God gives us in immeasurable love. Children don’t calculate consequences; let us say yes to God’s will. Children are dependent; let’s be persuaded that God will provide all that we need. Children are always growing and learning; let’s try to grow our soul through the knowledge of and faith in Jesus Christ. Children are happy and smile spontaneously; our joy is in the Lord and should be visible to all around us. Children need a great deal of love and don’t develop normally if deprived of it; God is love and loves us as no one else can. Children show their love for their parents; we should love God with all our heart and all our strength.

Prayer: Lord, help me to be like a child. Protect me and protect all the children of the world. Amen.

Día Internacional de la Infancia

COMO UN NIÑO
LUCAS 18:15-17
