LET NOTHING MAKE YOU ANXIOUS; GOD ALONE IS ENOUGH

PSALM 91: 1-7

“Jesus said to his disciples:  things that cause people to sin are bound to come”…

Luke 17:1a

It is a common complaint: “Why, if he is so good, does God permit these bad things to occur?” And the problem is that a concept of God as “lifesaver” has taken root within the popular conscience.  With these words, however, Jesus reminds us that things that cause people to sin are part of our lives and that closeness to God does not protect us from difficulties and problems.  One could then ask:  Then, what is the use of being a Christian?  The footprint of Jesus on earth with his work of infinite love suffices; his genuine example leading to his consequent death on the cross is sufficient; suffice his resurrection, God’s loving gesture of hope and reconciliation…for us to become followers of Jesus of Nazareth.

 

With our eyes fixed on Jesus and our absolute faith in the divine promises, we will be able to withstand any torment, any crisis, with the conviction that our God will give us the victory. We need only wait for his Kairós!

 

Prayer: Thank you, God, because together with you we can face any stumbling block.   Amen.

 

 

 

NADA TE TURBE… SÓLO DIOS BASTA

SALMO 91: 1-7

“Dijo Jesús a sus discípulos:

Imposible es que no vengan tropiezos”…

Lucas 17:1a

Es común el planteamiento “¿por qué si es tan bueno, Dios permite que le ocurran estas cosas tan malas?”. Y es que en la conciencia popular se ha arraigado un concepto de Dios a manera de “resguardo”. Sin embargo, Jesús con estas palabras nos recuerda que los tropiezos son parte de nuestras vidas y que la cercanía a Dios no nos pone a salvo de dificultades y problemas. Alguien pudiera entonces preguntar ¿y de qué sirve ser cristiano? Baste el paso de Jesús por la tierra con su labor de infinito amor; baste su ejemplo genuino y consecuente hasta la muerte y muerte de cruz; baste su resurrección, gesto amoroso de Dios de esperanza y reconciliación… para ser hoy seguidores y seguidoras de Jesús de Nazareth.

Con nuestra mirada puesta en Jesús y nuestra absoluta fe en las promesas divinas, podremos atravesar cualquier tormenta, cualquier crisis, con la convicción de que nuestro Dios nos dará la victoria. ¡Sólo tenemos que esperar por su Kairós!

 

Oración: Gracias Señor, porque junto a ti podemos enfrentar cualquier tropiezo. Amén

OUR CHILDREN ARE WATCHING

DEUTERONOMY 6:1-9

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.”

Deuteronomy 6:5

It can be disturbing to think that our children often reflect the manner in which we speak and act. I remember being worried one day by the incorrect way that my son used to speak to his sister when she was bothering him.  My spouse told me that his behavior was a reflection of my own. Indeed, a few weeks later I found myself speaking very poorly to my son.  Encouraged by my wife, I apologized to him for my behavior and told him that I would learn to treat him with more respect.  In the following months I noticed that my son’s attitude toward his sister also improved.

 

Our children do not learn to love and to obey God only by what we say.  They also learn by observing what we do.  We need to teach them constantly about God and his Word when we sit down at home, when we walk along the path, when we lay down and when we get up.  Together with what we say to our children, we need to set an example through our love and obedience to the Lord.  We cannot be perfect parents, but our children should see our great desire to please the Lord.  And when we fall short, they need to see our repentance.  We teach them through what we say and with what we do.

 

Prayer:  Just as you are a good parent, we ask that our daily attitude might show only the best to our children.  Amen.

 

NUESTROS HIJOS OBSERVAN

DEUTERONOMIO 6:1-9

“Amarás al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón,

con toda tu alma y con toda tu fuerza”

Deuteronomio 6:5

Puede ser perturbador pensar que nuestros hijos muchas veces reflejan la manera en que hablamos y actuamos. Recuerdo haberme preocupado un día por la manera incorrecta que usaba mi hijo para hablar a su hermana cuando ella lo estaba molestando. Mi esposa me dijo que su conducta era un reflejo de la mía. En efecto, unas semanas después, me descubrí hablándole muy mal a mi hijo. Alentado por mi esposa, le pedí disculpas por mi conducta y le dije que aprendería a tratarlo con más respeto. En los meses siguientes noté que la actitud de mi hijo hacia su hermana también mejoró.

Los hijos no aprenden a amar y a obedecer a Dios sólo por lo que decimos. También aprenden observando lo que hacemos. Hemos de enseñarles constantemente acerca de Dios y su Palabra cuando nos sentamos en nuestra casa, cuando andamos por el camino, cuando nos acostamos y cuando nos levantamos. Junto con lo que decimos a nuestros hijos, tenemos que dar el ejemplo por  medio de nuestro amor y obediencia al Señor. No podemos ser padres perfectos, pero nuestros hijos deben ver nuestro gran deseo de agradar al Señor. Y cuando nos quedamos cortos, tienen que ver nuestro arrepentimiento. Les enseñamos con lo que decimos y con lo que hacemos.

 

Oración: Tal como tú eres un buen padre, te pedimos que nuestra actitud diaria muestre a nuestros hijos sólo lo mejor.  Amén.

GOD SEES YOU

GENESIS 16:1-13

“And Hagar gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: ‘You are the God who sees me’…”

Genesis 16:13

in this biblical passage Hagar is fleeing to the desert after being mistreated by Sarai. As Hagar stood by a spring in that desolate and solitary place, the Angel of the Lord visited her. He reassured her that God Himself was aware of her situation.  Hagar replied:  “You are the God who sees”. She found great comfort knowing that God was with her in her anguish.  Today we too can be certain that God is with us wherever we may go, and that He knows everything that is happening to us.  He can solve all of our problems regardless of how overwhelming they may appear.  We are never alone, we are never forgotten and we are never out of hope’s reach.  However perturbing your circumstances may be, whether you are afflicted by an illness or a lesion, whether you are heartbroken over the loss of a loved one, or disappointed because you have been betrayed, God knows about it and cares.  Perhaps you are deeply depressed, or alone.  Nevertheless, you can be confident that you are under the watchful eye of God. 

 

Yes, like Hagar, you can know that God sees you.

 

 

Prayer: We are not afraid, Lord, of the dangers that surround us, because you are always watching over us.  Amen.

 

DIOS TE VE

GÉNESIS 16:1-13

“Y Agar llamó el nombre del Señor que le había hablado:

Tú eres un Dios que ve…”

Génesis 16:13

En este texto Agar huye al desierto después de ser maltratada por Sarai. Mientras Agar permanecía  de pie junto a una fuente en aquel desolado y solitario lugar, el Ángel de Jehová la visitó. Le aseguró que el mismo Dios era consciente de su situación. Agar respondió: “Tú eres un Dios que ve” . Ella encontró gran consuelo al saber que Dios la acompañaba en su angustia. También hoy podemos estar seguros de que Dios está con nosotros dondequiera que vayamos, y que sabe todo lo que nos sucede. Él, puede resolver todos los problemas por abrumadores que parezcan. Nunca estamos solos,  nunca somos olvidados y nunca estamos fuera del alcance de la esperanza. Cualesquiera que sean  tus circunstancias perturbadoras, ya sea que estés afligido  por una enfermedad o lesión, con el corazón destrozado por la pérdida de un ser querido, o desilusionado porque te han traicionado, Dios lo sabe y le importa. Tal vez estés profundamente deprimido, o solo. Sin embargo, puedes tener la confianza de que estás bajo la mirada vigilante de Dios. Sí, igual que Agar, puedes saber que Dios te ve.

 

Oración: No tememos Señor, los peligros que nos rodean, pues tu mirada siempre está sobre nosotros.  Amén.

JOHN 14:15-24

“…and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.  Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith…”

Hebrews 12:1-2

 

 

Someone once told the following story:

 

“As a young boy I had a dog.  My father would test the animal’s obedience once in a while.  He would place a piece of meat on the floor and then give this command:  No!  The dog, which must have had a strong urge to take the meat, ended up in a very difficult position: to obey or to disobey my father’s command.  But the dog never looked at the meat.  He seemed to be thinking that if he did, the temptation to disobey would be too great.  So he fixed his gaze on my father’s face.  There is a lesson in this for all of us. Let us fix our eyes on our Teacher’s face.”

 

Yes, that is a good piece of advice.  God is of course not going to tempt us to do wrong. But we encounter many temptations, and if we keep our eyes fixed upon the Lord Jesus Christ, we can overcome them.  When we find ourselves confronting seductions that could easily overwhelm us, we must look to Christ and follow his direction.  “Looking to him” and “Listening to him” will give us the discernment to know the right thing to do, and the desire and the strength to obey him.  Are you struggling with temptation?  Keep your eyes fixed on the Lord Jesus.  He will give you the victory.

 

Prayer: God of our lives, grant that our gaze may always be fixed upon you.  Grant, Lord, that we may be able to resist temptation with your strength.  Amen.

 

MIRA A CRISTO

JUAN 14:15-24

“…corramos con paciencia la carrera que tenemos por delante, puestos los ojos en Jesús, el autor y consumador de la fe…”

Hebreos 12:1-2

Alguien contó una vez la siguiente historia:

“De pequeño tenía un perro. Mi padre de vez en cuando probaba la obediencia del animal. Colocaba un trozo de carne en el piso y daba esta orden. ¡No! El perro, que debe haber tenido una fuerte urgencia de tomar la carne, terminaba en una posición muy difícil: obedecer o desobedecer la orden de mi padre. Pero el perro nunca miraba la carne. Parecía que pensaba que si lo hacía, la tentación de desobedecer será demasiado grande. Así que miraba fijamente a la cara de mi padre. Hay una lección en eso para todos nosotros. Siempre miremos el rostro del Maestro”.

Si, ese es un buen consejo. Claro que Dios no nos va a tentar a hacer lo malo. Pero encontramos muchas tentaciones, y si mantenemos los ojos fijos en el Señor Jesucristo, podemos vencerlas. Cuando nos vemos confrontados por seducciones que podrían abrumarnos fácilmente, tenemos que mirar a Cristo y seguir su dirección. “Verlo” y “Escucharlo” nos dará el discernimiento para saber lo que es correcto, y el deseo y la fortaleza para obedecerlo. ¿Estás luchando con la tentación? Mantén los ojos fijos en el Señor Jesús. Él te dará la victoria.

Oración: Dios de nuestra vida, permite que  nuestra mirada siempre esté fija en ti. Que podamos Señor ser capaces de resistir la tentación con tu fuerza.  Amén.

THE TRUE JESUS

MATTHEW 16:13-20

“Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’”

Who is Jesus?  If we observe the ways in which he is portrayed today, it is almost impossible to recognize him as the Jesus of The Bible.  Some groups add to what The Bible says about Him, while others reduce him to mere humanity, affirming that Jesus was only a wise teacher or moralist.  There are those who would like to make him totally disappear.  But that is nothing new.  That has been going on for almost two thousand years.

 

On occasion, without realizing it, we construct our lives as if Jesus were not a part of them.  We go about our daily tasks as if we had “removed” him from our lives. When Jesus asked his disciples what people said concerning whom He was, some answered that he was Elijah, others that he was John the Baptist.  But those replies were inadequate. Peter was correct when he said:  “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

 

Don’t allow yourself to be fooled by the confusing and false descriptions of Jesus that you read, see or hear.  Cling to The Bible and to your own encounter with the resurrected Christ. When people try to underestimate his identity, tell them in no uncertain terms who the true Jesus is.

 

Prayer:  To know Christ is to know you, my God.  We wish to know you today. Amen.

 

 

EL VERDADERO JESÚS

MATEO 16:13-20

“Respondiendo  Simón Pedro, dijo:

Tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo del Dios viviente”

Mateo 16:16

¿Quién es Jesús? Si observamos las maneras en que se lo representa hoy en día, es casi imposible reconocerlo como el Jesús de La Biblia. Algunos grupos agregan a lo que La Biblia dice sobre Él, mientras otros lo reducen  a simple humanidad, afirmando que Jesús era solamente n un maestro sabio o moralista. Hay quienes quisieran hacerlo desaparecer totalmente. Pero eso no es nada nuevo. Ha estado sucediendo durante casi 2000 años.

En ocasiones, sin darnos cuenta, construimos nuestras vidas como si Jesús no formara parte de ellas. Hacemos nuestras cosas diarias como si lo hubiéramos “quitado” de nuestras vidas. Cuando Jesús preguntó a sus discípulos lo que la gente decía respecto a quién era Él, algunos respondieron que Elías, otros que Juan el Bautista. Pero esas respuestas eran inadecuadas. Pedro estaba en lo correcto cuando dijo: “Tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo del Dios viviente”

No te dejes engañar por descripciones confusas y falsas de Jesús que leas, veas o escuches. Aférrate a La Biblia y a tu propio encuentro con el Cristo resucitado. Cuando la gente trate de subestimar su identidad, diles sin usar términos inciertos quién es el verdadero Jesús.

 

Oración: Conocer a Cristo es conocerte a ti, mi Dios. Queremos conocerte hoy.  Amén.

LET US SEEK PEACE

 

HEBREWS 12:12- 15

“Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.”

                                                              Hebrews 12:14

Among the various meanings for peace, the dictionary tells us:  “tranquility and good relationships with one another”, “reconciliation, a return to friendship and to agreement”, “the ability to create a spirit of tranquility and good relationships”.  Thus, tranquility, harmony and unity are spiritual states similar to peace.

 

We all seek peace, but we do not all know where or how to find it. There is only one way and Jesus Christ gave it to us:  “My peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you”. In order to find peace, we need to have an encounter with the Lord; He will give us peace, and not just any peace, but rather the peace which comes from love and the strength that only God can give us.  It implies effort, and struggling against the human tendency towards selfishness and indifference.  It implies love, above all for God and as a result, loving others as we love ourselves.  A difficult task!  But not an impossible one, because the Lord has promised to be with us.

 

Prayer:  God of peace, give us your peace, so that we may be able to share it with our family, our friends, the brothers and sisters in the faith and in the communities where we live out our lives.   

 

 Día Internacional de la Paz

 

BUSQUEMOS LA PAZ

 

HEBREOS 12 :12- 15

“Procurad la paz con todos y la santidad,

sin la cual nadie verá al Señor.”

                                                              Hebreos 12:14

Entre los varios significados  de paz, el diccionario nos dice: “sosiego y buena correspondencia de unos con otros”, “reconciliación , vuelta a la amistad y a la concordia”, “virtud que pone en el ánimo tranquilidad y sosiego”. Luego, la quietud, la armonía, la unión son estados de ánimo afines a la paz.

Todos buscamos paz, pero no todos sabemos dónde y cómo encontrarla. Hay una sola vía y Jesucristo nos la dio: “Mi paz os dejo, mi paz os doy” Para hallar la paz, debemos tener nuestro encuentro con el Señor; Él nos dará la paz, pero no cualquier paz, sino la que proviene del amor y la fortaleza  que sólo Dios puede darnos. Implica esfuerzo, lucha contra  la tendencia humana al egoísmo y la indiferencia, implica  amar, ante todo a Dios y como consecuencia de ello, amar a los otros como a nosotros mismos. ¡Dura tarea! Pero no imposible, porque el Señor ha prometido estar con nosotros.

 

Oración: Dios de paz, danos tu paz, para que podamos compartirla con la familia, los amigos, los hermanos en la fe y en la comunidad donde nos desenvolvemos  Amén

“He must become greater; I must become less.”

John 3:30

Seated across from me on the train were a lady and a young girl. The mother began to talk about her daughter’s illness, and that they were going to the city to see the doctor.  The symptoms were obvious and following the bad habit of presuming ourselves all to be doctors, I ventured to express my diagnosis.  The week following my “mission” I ran into this same woman, but this time she was accompanied by five or six others who had come to “consult” with me because I was “clairvoyant” and had special powers.  It took great effort to convince her that I was only speaking from similar experiences known to me.  I realize now that I missed my chance to become the “miracle worker” of the area, since, according to those women, I had a “special gift.”

 

After this experience I was able to better understand why John the Baptist continually repeated:  “I am not the Christ”.  There are times when those around us glorify us, or want to exalt us to the same level as Christ, and we permit it, which is a sin.  It is a greater sin when we irresponsibly allow these situations to take place.

 

We are not the Christ; we are only his instruments in accordance with his will:  THINK ABOUT IT!

 

Prayer:  Lord, place within us a spirit of humility and obedience.  Allow us to flee from self-promotion.  Amen.

 

 

 

 MENGUAR Y CRECER

JUAN 3:22-30

“Es necesario que él crezca, pero que yo mengüe”

Juan 3:30

En el tren sentadas frente a mi viajaban una señora y una niña. La madre comenzó a hablar de la enfermedad de la hija; y que iba a la ciudad para ver al médico.

Los síntomas eran obvios y siguiendo la mala costumbre de pensar que todos somos médicos, me aventuré y expresé mi diagnóstico. La semana siguiente de regreso de la “misión” me encontré con la misma señora, pero esta vez acompañada de cinco o seis más que venían a “consultarse” conmigo porque yo era “vidente” y tenía un poder especial. Trabajo me costó convencerla de que yo sólo me había valido de experiencias similares que había conocido. Hoy me doy cuenta de que perdí la oportunidad de convertirme en el “milagrero” de la zona, pues según ellas, tenía una “gracia especial”.

Después de esta experiencia pude entender mejor a Juan el Bautista al repetir una y otra vez: “Yo no soy el Cristo”. A veces, los que nos rodean, nos ensalzan, o nos quieren elevar al nivel de Cristo y lo permitimos, lo cual es un pecado. El pecado es mayor cuando propiciamos irresponsablemente que estas situaciones se produzcan.

No somos el Cristo, solo sus instrumentos de acuerdo con su voluntad: ¡PIENSALO!

 

Oración: Señor, pon en nosotros un espíritu de humildad y obediencia. Permítenos huir del protagonismo. Amén.
