FAREWELLS ARE SPECIAL

GENESIS 31:20-55

“Why did you run off secretly and deceive me? Why didn’t you tell me, so I could send you away with joy and singing to the music of tambourines and harps?”

Genesis 31:27

A friend of mine told me that each time her father had to go spend long periods of time in the hospital due to health issues, he would look at every corner of the house as if he were bidding it farewell.  She would always tell him:  Papi, stop saying goodbye; you’ll be home again soon.

I identified with this story because I am one who believes that farewells are important and necessary.  Whether between people or from the places we frequent, it is necessary to say goodbye.

Farewells may be perhaps difficult and painful, but they also constitute a ritual that allows us to be thankful to God for what he has given us.  This gratitude stems from the conviction that the person or place to which we bid farewell have made us happy, through the grace and love of God, for a period of time.

Farewells also allow us to render our appreciation, in a special way, for things that may appear less valuable on a daily basis. 

Prayer: Grant, oh God, that in each farewell we may be able to acknowledge you as the author of every good thing that has happened in our lives. Let us not allow the opportunity to pass us by to bid farewell to the people who have left their footprints in our pathways!  Give us the strength to confront the nostalgia and sadness that comes after saying goodbye. Amen.

LO ESPECIAL DE LAS DESPEDIDAS

GÉNESIS 31:20-55

“¿Por qué te fugaste a escondidas? ¿Por qué me engañaste

y no me dijiste nada? ¡Yo te habría despedido

con alegría y con cantos, con tamborines y arpas”

Génesis 31:27

Una amiga mía me contó  que cada vez que su padre tenía que hacer estancias prolongadas en un hospital por motivos de salud, miraba cada rincón de la casa como despidiéndose. Ella siempre le decía: Papi, no te despidas más que tú vas a regresar pronto.

Me sentí muy identificada con la historia porque soy de las que creo que las despedidas son importantes y necesarias. Ya sea de la gente o de los espacios que frecuentamos, es necesario despedirnos.

Quizás las despedidas sean difíciles y dolorosas, pero también constituyen un ritual que nos permite ser personas agradecidas a Dios por lo que nos ha proporcionado. Este agradecimiento parte de la convicción de que aquello a lo que decimos adiós nos hizo felices durante un tiempo por la gracia y el amor divino.

Las despedidas nos permiten valorar además, de manera especial, cosas que por cotidianas a veces nos resultan carentes de valor.

Oración: Permite oh Dios, que en cada despedida podamos reconocerte como el autor de cada cosa buena que ha pasado en nuestras vidas. ¡Que no dejemos pasar la oportunidad de despedirnos de personas que han dejado huellas en nuestro camino! Danos fuerzas para enfrentar las nostalgias y las tristezas luego de una despedida. Amén
