LIVING IN PRAYER

ACTS 4:23-31

“He has made everything beautiful in its time.”

Ecclesiastes 3:11

Most of us are so busy throughout the day, that it becomes difficult to set aside a portion of the time for prayer, and for entering into genuine communion with God.

Frank Laubach, an evangelical missionary known as “the apostle of the illiterate,” remained in constant communion with God through several questions.  Every two or three minutes he would pray:  “Am I doing your will, Lord?” “Am I pleasing you?”

Brief prayers such as: “Thank you, Father,” “I believe in your Word” or “I want to be pleasing to you,” can transform the journey through life into a pilgrimage. You don’t need to leave your daily work, or even to kneel down in the kitchen.  Pray right there wherever you find yourself.  Turn your kitchen, your workshop or your classroom into your chapel for daily prayer. Give thanks to God for everything that is good; ask him about the difficulties you have encountered, seek his mercy and his strength.  And if you fall asleep while you are praying, don’t worry about it.  What better place to fall asleep than in the Father’s arms?

There are occasions for being alone with the Savior, but we must seek him with great determination.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, awaken in me the constant desire to seek you in prayer. Amen.

VIVIR EN ORACIÓN

La mayoría de nosotros estamos tan ocupados durante el día, que se nos hace muy difícil apartar una porción de tiempo para orar, y entrar en una genuina comunicación con Dios.

Frank Laubach, un misionero evangélico conocido como el “apóstol de los analfabetos”, permanecía en comunión constante con Dios mediante algunas preguntas. Cada dos o tres minutos oraba: “¿Estoy haciendo tu voluntad, Señor?”, “¿Te estoy agradando?”

Pequeñas oraciones como: “Gracias, Padre”, “Creo en tu Palabra” o “Quiero agradarte”, pueden convertir el viaje por la vida en un peregrinaje. No tienes que salir del trabajo cotidiano, ni que arrodillarte en la cocina. Ora ahí donde te encuentras. Haz que la cocina, el taller de trabajo o el aula se conviertan en tu capilla para la oración diaria. Dale gracias a Dios por lo bueno; pregúntale acerca de las dificultades que has tenido, busca su misericordia y su fortaleza. Y si te duermes mientras oras, no te preocupes. ¿Qué mejor lugar para quedarse dormido que en los brazos del Padre?

Hay ocasiones para estar a solas con el Salvador, pero es necesario que con gran empeño lo busquemos.

Oración: Espíritu Santo, despierta en mí el deseo constante de buscarte en oración. Amén.

LET US LEARN HOW TO FORGIVE

MATTHEW 18:15-22

“Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-times-seven times.”

Matthew 18:22

“Seventy-times-seven” was the hyperbole that Jesus used to symbolize a limitless number. It was no longer a matter of forgiving up to three times, as commanded by an ancient Jewish declaration, or even up to seven times, according to a later declaration. It was necessary to forgive always and every time, thereby nourishing a spirit of mercy and forgiveness within our hearts.  We need to remember everything that Christ has had to forgive on our accounts. Even in the model Lord’s Prayer we always ask God to forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

Luckily for us, God goes beyond all mathematical calculations. God forgives much more abundantly than what we do and much more than what we actually deserve. God forgives because he loves, and his love, just like his forgiveness, does not have, and cannot have, any limitations for his human creatures. Let us learn how to forgive others a bit more than seventy-times-seven.

Prayer: Lord, give us an ability to forgive that will always remain a part of our lives. Amen.

  APRENDAMOS A PERDONAR

MATEO 18:15-22

“Jesús le dijo: No te digo hasta siete,

sino aun hasta setenta veces siete”

Setenta veces siete era la forma hiperbólica con que Jesús simboliza un número ilimitado. No se trataba ya de perdonar tres veces, como apuntaba una antigua declaración judía; o quizás perdonar siete veces como señalaba una declaración posterior. Era necesario perdonar siempre, para de esta forma alimentar el espíritu de piedad y perdón en nuestros corazones. Recordemos todo lo que Cristo ha tenido que perdonarnos a nosotros. Aun en la oración modelo no vacilamos en pedir a Dios perdón para nuestras faltas, en la misma medida en que nosotros perdonamos a nuestros deudores. Por suerte para nosotros, Dios supera todo cálculo matemático. Dios nos perdona mucho más abundantemente que lo que nosotros lo hacemos y mucho más de lo que realmente merecemos. Dios perdona porque ama,   y su amor, al igual que su perdón, no tiene, o más bien no puede tener, límite para el ser humano. Aprendamos a perdonar a nuestro prójimo un poco más de setenta veces siete.

Oración: Señor, haz que la capacidad de perdonar no se aparte nunca de nuestras vidas. Amén.

PSALM 51:1-13

“…for dust you are and to dust you will return.”

Genesis 3:19

King David, the Lord’s anointed one, fell into sin when he gave full rein to his instincts of power and pleasure. Confronted by the prophet, he acknowledged his sin, humbled himself, asked for forgiveness, and joyfully received God’s mercy. True conversion manifests itself in our behavior.  The desire to each day become a better person should be expressed in our place of work or in the classroom where we study or in our behavior within our family and our church. Do not hesitate to begin anew.  Do not put up resistance by focusing on the behavior of those who poorly perform God’s work.  On the contrary, focus on those who work well.  Lift yourself up.  Remember that there are not a few persons who as of today begin their walk towards Easter with the purpose of change.  Today is a good day to turn back to the Lord.  The Lord will look after you if, from the bottom of your heart, you will ask Him:  Create in me, God, a clean heart, renew in me a steadfast spirit. Begin the Lenten season today, living it as a time of change and hope!

Prayer: Faithful God, you who love us and do not abandon us to our errors, reach out to us with your great mercy.  Allow us to live our lives during this season of Lent in a spirit of transformation.  Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

UN TIEMPO DE CAMBIO Y ESPERANZA

SALMO  51:1-13

El rey David, el ungido del Señor, cayó en pecado al dar rienda suelta a sus instintos de poder y placer. Confrontado por el profeta, reconoció su pecado, se humilló, pidió perdón, y gozó de la misericordia de Dios. La verdadera conversión se manifiesta en la conducta. Los deseos de ser cada día mejor persona, se han de expresar en nuestro trabajo o en el aula donde estudiamos, en el comportamiento con la familia y en la iglesia. No dudes en comenzar de nuevo. No ofrezcas resistencia, fijándote en el comportamiento de los que obran mal. Por el contrario, fíjate en los que obran bien. Levántate. Recuerda que no son pocos los que inician desde hoy el camino hacia la Pascua con propósitos de conversión. Hoy es un día propicio para volver al Señor. El Señor te atenderá si repites de corazón, a modo de súplica: Crea en mí, Dios, un corazón puro, renuévame por dentro con espíritu firme. Comienza hoy la Cuaresma, ¡vívela como un tiempo de cambio y esperanza!

Oración: Dios fiel, tú que nos amas y no nos desechas por nuestros errores, alcánzanos con tu gran misericordia. Permite que vivamos esta Cuaresma en espíritu de transformación. Por Jesucristo nuestro Señor. Amén

GOOD FRUITS

MATTHEW 7:15-20

“By their fruit you will recognize them…”

Matthew 7: 16

We all know and appreciate the very delicious fruits that we find in the fields of our country.  The same goes for the community where we live, our churches and other places of involvement, where we know people who we can compare with a tree that gives abundant and rich fruits.  They are those who by their example, their behavior, love and sacrifice for others, produce an abundant harvest.

Christ said: “By their fruits you will recognize them.” The person who loves and follows the footsteps of the Lord is known for bearing good fruits, because he carries within his being the power that compels him to work in the Lord’s Vineyard and He will make those fruits multiply into many hundreds.

We are the fruits of someone who harvested a leafy tree; let us consider each fruit with its seeds and trust that these will reproduce another harvest.

Prayer: Lord, help us to daily sow faith, hope and love. May others come to know your Gospel through us.  Amen.

 LOS BUENOS FRUTOS

“Por  sus frutos los conoceréis…”

Mateo 7: 16

Todos conocemos y apreciamos los frutos tan deliciosos que encontramos en los campos de nuestro país. Así también en la comunidad donde vivimos, en la Iglesia y en el medio donde nos desenvolvemos, conocemos a personas que podemos comparar con un árbol que da abundantes y ricos frutos. Son aquellas que por su ejemplo, su conducta, amor y sacrificio por los demás, producen una cosecha abundante.

Cristo dijo: “Por sus frutos los conoceréis”. El que ama y sigue las pisadas del Señor, es conocido por sus buenos frutos, porque lleva dentro de su ser el poder que lo impulsa a trabajar en su Viña y Él hará que los frutos se recojan a cientos y a mil.

Nosotros somos frutos de alguien que cosechó  un frondoso árbol; pensamos que cada fruto tiene sus semillas y que estas reproducen otra cosecha.

Oración: Señor, ayúdanos a sembrar a diario fe, esperanza y amor. Que otros conozcan tu Evangelio a través de nosotros. Amén.

BETTER TO GIVE THAN TO RECEIVE

MARK 12:41-44

“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” 

Acts 20:35b

The family we had met made their living by selling firewood. We could not imagine that anyone could depend economically on such a job. As we reached the end of our visit to that city, this family told us that they wished to give us a special farewell. We felt tempted to refuse the invitation because we realized this family’s difficult economic conditions, but we finally accepted. They insisted that it was a great pleasure to be able to do this farewell, and that it would always be a reminder of the good times they had spent with us.  The time came for the farewell:  refreshments for two and a poem.  That occasion may have cost them an entire day’s earnings; a gesture which we will always remember.  They shared the little that they had as a token of their gratitude, joy, and friendship.  Would you do this with others?  When you give what little you can, do you do it with joy?

Prayer: Thank you, Father, for what you give us.  Place within us the desire to share with others what we have even if it is small, but may we always do so with joy.  Amen.

 MEJOR ES DAR QUE RECIBIR

MARCOS 12:41-44

“Más bienaventurado es dar que recibir”

La familia que habíamos conocido se dedicaba a vender leña. No podíamos imaginar que alguien pudiera depender económicamente de un trabajo como ese. Al finalizar nuestra visita a aquella ciudad, la familia nos dijo que quería hacernos una especial despedida. Nos sentimos tentados a no aceptar porque sabíamos las difíciles condiciones económicas en las que vivía esta familia, pero finalmente aceptamos.  Ellos insistieron en que era una gran alegría poder despedirnos, y que siempre recordarían los buenos momentos que habían pasado con nosotros. Llegó la despedida: un refresco para dos y una poesía. Quizás en ese momento se estaban gastando todo lo ganado en el día, por lo que siempre recordaremos ese gesto. Compartieron de lo poco que tenían  como muestra de agradecimiento, de alegría y de amistad.  ¿Lo harías tú con los demás? ¿Al dar lo que tienes, lo haces con alegría aunque sea poco?

Oración: Gracias Padre, por lo que nos das. Pon en nosotros el deseo de compartir con otros lo que tenemos aunque sea poco, pero que siempre lo podamos hacer con alegría. Amén.

“IT’S SO GOOD TO BE HERE!”

MATTHEW 17:1-9

“Serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling.”

Psalm 2:11

The Bible does not cover up things which are natural and simple, not even human weaknesses and errors. The people who give life to the history of faith are like you and like me, with their successes and their failures.

The story of the Lord’s transfiguration shows us the natural, emotional and erroneous reactions of the disciples who witnessed this experience.  Although Jesus had chosen the top three students in his class, even they were not entirely able to interpret the things they saw.   And yet, Peter’s attitude and the reaction of the others continue to inspire in us the glorious sensation of witnessing the manifestation of Christ’s glory.  Wouldn’t you have had the same idea of wanting to remain there forever enjoying the glory of the Lord?  Allowing Christ to intervene in our lives means being willing to be radically transformed.  It means living the transfiguration from a new perspective, from an intimacy that, although it points to the cross and to death, also carries with it the certainty of the resurrection.

Prayer: Oh God, who revealed Jesus Christ’s glory to his disciples, help us to hear your word and give us the courage to do your will. Amen.

Transfiguración del Señor

“¡QUÉ BUENO ES ESTAR AQUÍ!”

MATEO 17:1-9

La Biblia no esconde las cosas naturales y sencillas, ni siquiera las debilidades y equivocaciones humanas. Los personajes que dan vida a la historia de la fe son como tú y como yo,  con sus grandezas y sus miserias. En el relato de la transfiguración del Señor podemos ver las reacciones naturales, emocionales y erróneas de los discípulos ante esta experiencia. A pesar de que Jesús había escogido a los tres alumnos sobresalientes de su clase, aun ellos no estaban libres de interpretar a su modo las cosas que veían. Sin embargo, la actitud de Pedro y la reacción de los otros, no dejan de inspirar en nosotros la gloriosa sensación de estar frente a la manifestación de la gloria de Cristo. ¿No hubieras tenido tú la misma idea de quedarte para siempre disfrutando de la gloria del Señor? Dejar a Cristo intervenir en nuestra vida es estar dispuesto a ser transformado radicalmente, a vivir la transfiguración desde una nueva perspectiva, desde una intimidad que, aunque anuncia la cruz y la muerte, lleva también en sí la certeza de la resurrección.

Oración: Oh Dios, quien revelaste en gloria a Jesucristo a sus discípulos, ayúdanos a escuchar tu palabra y danos valor para cumplir tu voluntad. Amén.

LET US TRUST OUR FUTURE TO GOD

EXODUS 16:13-21

“Then Moses said to them, ‘No one is to keep any of it until morning.’”

Exodus 16:19

All of us like to be certain about our future. The future always worries us in such a way that we are sometimes unable to live in the “here and now,” while thinking about “what tomorrow may bring.” God’s command to the Israelites was clear:  gather each day what is needed for that day.

In the New Testament, Jesus repeats this idea in different words but with the same meaning: “each day has troubles of its own.” This is more easily seen when there is a scarcity of certain items and some people store up more than is necessary, leaving others without the possibility of obtaining the things that everyone needs.

To which group do you belong?  Are you one of those who trust that each day will have its problems and its benefits or do you belong to the group that spoils the present by worrying about the future?

Let us trust our future to God and conduct our lives in the present with hope and responsibility.

Prayer: Lord, we ask you today to help us to live each day trusting in you. Amen

CONFIEMOS NUESTRO FUTURO A DIOS

EXODO 16:13-21

“Y les dijo Moisés: Ninguno deje nada para mañana”

Éxodo 16:19

A todos nos gusta tener  nuestro futuro asegurado. El futuro siempre nos preocupa de manera tal que a veces no vivimos “el hoy” pensando “en el mañana”. La ordenanza dada por Dios a los israelitas fue clara: cada día recoge lo necesario para ese día.

En el Nuevo Testamento, Jesús repite esta idea con otras palabras pero con el mismo significado: “cada día tiene su propio afán”. Esto se ve más claro cuando hay algunas cosas que escasean, y algunas personas acaparan más de lo necesario, dejando a otros sin posibilidades de obtener aquello que todos necesitan.

¿En qué grupo estás tú: en aquel que confía en que cada día tiene sus problemas y beneficios o en el grupo que malvive el presente afanado por el futuro?

Confiamos nuestro futuro a Dios y vivamos el presente con esperanza  y responsabilidad.

Oración: Señor, hoy te pedimos que nos ayudes a vivir cada  día confiando en ti. Amén.
