PRAYER

ACTS 16: 22-25

“Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances…”

I Thessalonians  5:16-18ª

Prayer is a necessity in our lives.  We live surrounded by difficulties, illnesses and problems that we think have no solution, and then we cry out to God, and we cling to the possibility of divine help and wait for his response.

The apostle Paul could invite the believers to be “joyful always,” to “pray continually,” to “give thanks in all circumstances” since he had already put these things into practice throughout his life, as filled as it was with adversity and affliction, which is precisely why the ‘always’ and the ‘continually’ stand out; that was the experience in the Philippian prison that brought about his release and the conversion of his jailer.  

But it is not only in our most difficult moments that we need to pray.  We are called to persevere in prayer and to do so with acts of thanksgiving (Colossians 4:2).  Making requests is essential to prayer, it is our conviction that our Father provides for all of our needs, but our gratitude should then be the logical response to God.

When you begin your day, when you lay your head down, do not do so without first praying.  In your daily activity, maintain an attitude of constant communion with God.  At night, even when sleep overcomes you, make the effort to say a prayer. 

Let us pray more and exercise our faith, hopefully with greater patience, and the result will be an abundant blessing.

Prayer: Lord, increase our need to pray.  We give you thanks for the communion that we can have with you through prayer, and for all that you teach us through it. Amen.

LA ORACIÓN

HECHOS 16: 22-25

“Estad siempre gozosos. Orad sin cesar.

Dad gracias a Dios en todo…”

La oración es una necesidad en nuestras vidas. Vivimos rodeados de dificultades, enfermedades y problemas que pensamos no tienen solución, y entonces clamamos a Dios, nos aferramos a la posibilidad del auxilio divino y esperamos su respuesta.

El apóstol Pablo podía invitar a los creyentes a estar “siempre gozosos”, a “orar sin cesar”, a “dar gracias en todo” ya que él lo había puesto en práctica en el transcurso de su vida, tan llena de contratiempos y aflicciones, precisamente por eso resalta el ´siempre´ y el ´sin cesar´; esa fue la experiencia en la cárcel de Filipos que trajo como resultado su liberación y la conversión de aquel carcelero.

Pero no solo en los momentos más difíciles es que se ha de orar. La llamada es a perseverar en la oración y a hacerlo con acciones de gracias (Col.4:2). Pedir es esencial a la oración, es nuestra convicción de que nuestro Padre nos sostiene en todas nuestras necesidades, pero la gratitud debería ser entonces la lógica respuesta al favor de Dios.

Cuando comience tu día, cuando reposes tu cabeza, no lo hagas sin antes orar. En tu actividad diaria, mantén una actitud de constante comunión con Dios. Por las noches, aunque el sueño te venza, esfuérzate y ora.

Oremos más y ejercitemos nuestra fe, esperemos con  más paciencia, y el resultado será una bendición abundante.

Oración: Señor, aumenta nuestra necesidad de orar. Te damos gracias por la comunión que podemos tener contigo por medio de la oración, por todo lo que nos enseñas mediante ella. Amén.

A STRONG ROCK

PSALM  62:5-8

“Be my rock of refuge,

A strong fortress to save me!”

Psalm 31: 2b

Have you ever tried to cross the width of a river by jumping from one rock to another?  As long as the stones are close to one another and seem large enough to support our feet, we experience a sense of security, we continue to slowly advance, watching our balance with each jump before taking the next one.  But on some occasions we are paralyzed with doubt or fear, we are uncertain of being able to reach the next rock, we halt our movement, there is neither progress nor satisfaction. At one time or another we have surely found that the rocks let us down, they are not set sturdily enough on the riverbed and this causes us to lose our balance and to get wet. 

The true challenge of the Christian life is similar to this forward movement; it is a true test of faith to have our feet in the air, without support, in the leap of faith that hopes to reach the nearby rock.  We can leap forward and embrace a new vision beyond our insecurities if we have the psalmist’s assuredness:  God is our strong rock and our strength for salvation. 

Many times, belief in God seems to be like jumping with our feet in the air, away from the rock, but even in this instance we can perceive his presence, and feel the security of reaching an immovable support.

Prayer: Our Lord, we need to feel you at all times, in the midst of our doubts or fears, grant that we may acknowledge you as our strong rock. Amen.

UNA ROCA FIRME

SALMO  62:5-8

“¡Sé tú mi roca fuerte y la fortaleza para salvarme! “

Salmo 31: 2b

¿Han tratado alguna vez de cruzar el vado de algún río saltando de roca en roca? Mientras las piedras se hallan cerca una de la otra y parecen lo suficientemente grandes como para apoyar nuestros pies, experimentamos un sentido de seguridad, vamos avanzando lentamente, guardando el equilibrio en cada salto antes de dar el próximo.

Pero en algunas ocasiones la duda o el temor nos paralizan, no estamos seguros de poder llegar a la roca siguiente, detenemos el movimiento, no hay progreso ni satisfacción. Y en alguna que otra ocasión seguramente hemos experimentado que también las rocas nos fallan, no están fuertemente sujetas al lecho del río y esto provoca que perdamos el equilibrio y nos mojemos.

El verdadero desafío de la vida cristiana es como este seguir adelante, es una verdadera prueba de fe el tener los pies en el vacío, sin apoyo, en el salto de fe que espera alcanzar la roca cercana. Podemos lanzarnos y abrazar una nueva visión más allá de nuestras incertidumbres si tenemos la certeza del salmista: Dios es nuestra roca fuerte y fortaleza para salvación.

Muchas veces el creer a Dios suele parecer a este saltar con los pies en el aire, fuera de la roca, pero aún en ese instante podemos percatarnos de su presencia, y sentir la seguridad de alcanzar un apoyo inconmovible.

Oración: Señor nuestro, necesitamos sentirte en todo momento, en medio de nuestras dudas o temores permite reconocerte como nuestra roca fuerte. Amén.

THE PROMISES

2 PETER 1:3-8

“Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises…”

2 Peter  1:4

A traditional hymn in our churches is titled All the promises of the Lord Jesus.  The hymn’s chorus reminds us that those promises are “great” and “faithful” and that they have been given to us so that we may always trust in them.  The hymn also sends us back to the giver of those promises, one who is forever faithful.

The Bible highlights that divine quality of faithfulness, although we may not be capable of it; God’s faithfulness, however, remains unchanging even if we fail in our duly obedient response to the promise to be his followers (2 Tim 2:13).

The believer’s testimony should always be an assuredness of what God tells us through those beautiful promises, exhorting and encouraging us, and at times, of course, also reprimanding and admonishing us. We do not always achieve the fulfillment of certain promises from the Bible; at times we despair thinking that God should respond to us with the specific biblical promise that we desire and desperately seem to need.  But to experience that “spoken word” of God to us, is one of the precious things in the communion that establishes itself in our daily lives with our Lord.

Prayer: Lord, we give you thanks for your promises.  We thank you because they prevail for those who have put their trust in You.  Help us to live by proclaiming and accepting them as your gift to us each day.  Amen.

LAS PROMESAS

2 PEDRO 1:3-8

“Por medio de estas cosas nos ha dado

preciosas y grandísimas promesas”.

2 Pedro  1:4

Un himno tradicional en nuestras iglesias se titula Todas las promesas del Señor Jesús. El coro de este himno nos recuerda que dichas promesas son “grandes” y “fieles” y que nos han sido dadas para que confiemos en ellas por siempre. El himno también nos remite al dador de esas promesas, uno que por siempre es fiel.

La Biblia resalta esa cualidad divina de la fidelidad, aunque nosotros no podamos serlo cabalmente; más aun, la fidelidad de Dios se mantiene inalterable incluso si nosotros fallamos a la debida respuesta obediente y a la promesa de ser sus seguidores (2 Tim 2:13).

El testimonio del creyente ha de ser siempre una certeza de que Dios nos habla mediante esas bellas promesas, nos exhorta, anima, y a veces, ¿por qué no? también reprende y amonesta. No siempre logramos captar el cumplimiento de ciertas promesas de la Biblia; a veces nos desesperamos pensando que Dios debería respondernos con determinada promesa bíblica que es la que anhelamos y desesperadamente parecemos necesitar. Pero experimentar ese “hablar” de Dios con nosotros, es una de las cosas preciosas de la comunión que se establece en nuestra vida diaria con nuestro Señor.

Oración: Señor, te damos gracias por tus promesas. Te damos gracias porque ellas prevalecen para quienes han puesto en Ti su confianza. Ayúdanos a vivir proclamándolas y aceptándolas, como tu regalo para nosotros cada día. Amén

CONFESSION OF SINS

I JOHN 1: 6-10

“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.”

I John 1:8

Within our liturgies we all easily recognize the moment for the confession of sins; it is something we do very early on in the order of worship as a way of ‘purifying ourselves’ in order to be able to enter into a proper communion with God.  But we could ask ourselves if we really feel such a confession to be effective or if it has become a simple ritual that repeats pretty phrases but without touching the deepest corner of our hearts.

In our reformed tradition this practice obeys the need to recognize human sin, which is always present, as an obstacle to our communion with one another, and with God; but I often think that we should also have a second confession after the sermon; if God has spoken to us, then we should acknowledge our errors before venturing to confess our faith.

Walter Brueggemann, the erudite North American Old Testament scholar, mentions in one of his books the sad reality of our constant distortion of the biblical God; we make interpretations that accommodate us, but we do not follow the divine command as it is given to us. Our nature continues to deny our sinfulness, hiding itself behind fig tree leaves, as we aspire over and over again to become “like gods”.

Prayer: God of goodness, holy and righteous, do not allow us to fall into the temptation of feeling comfortable with our own visions of how to receive your Word.  Give us humble hearts, willing to repent, ready to be purified and to thus be obedient to you.  Through Jesus Christ. Amen.

CONFESIÓN DE PECADOS

I JUAN 1: 6-10

“Si afirmamos que no tenemos pecado,  nos engañamos

a nosotros mismos y no tenemos la verdad”

I Juan 1:8

Dentro de nuestras liturgias todos reconocemos con facilidad el momento para la confesión de pecados, es algo que realizamos muy tempranamente en el orden del culto como modo de ´purificarnos´ para poder entrar en una correcta comunión con Dios. Pero pudiéramos preguntarnos si realmente sentimos como efectiva tal confesión o se ha vuelto un simple ritual que repite frases bonitas pero no tocan lo profundo de nuestro corazón.

En nuestra tradición reformada la práctica obedece a la necesidad de reconocimiento del pecado humano, siempre presente, como obstáculo para nuestra comunión unos con otros, y con Dios; pero muchas veces creo que deberíamos también tener otra segunda confesión después del sermón; si Dios nos ha hablado, entonces deberíamos reconocer nuestras faltas antes de atrevernos a confesar nuestra fe.

Walter Brueggemann, eminente erudito norteamericano especialista en Antiguo Testamento, menciona en uno de sus libros la triste realidad de nuestro constante distorsionar al Dios bíblico; vamos haciendo interpretaciones que nos acomoden, pero no seguimos la orden divina tal como se nos presenta. Nuestra naturaleza sigue desconociendo nuestra pecaminosidad ocultándose tras hojas de higueras, y vanamente aspiramos una y otra vez al ser “como dioses”.

Oración: Buen Dios, santo y justo, no nos dejes caer en la tentación de sentirnos cómodos con nuestras propias visiones de cómo aceptar tu Palabra. Danos corazones humildes, dispuestos al arrepentimiento, listos para ser purificados y así obedecerte. Por Jesucristo. Amén.

WHEN SIN INCREASES

ROMANS 7: 7-25

“… but where sin increased, grace increased all the more…”

The Scriptures fill an important role for Christians; they are a source of inspiration and a guide to show us the way to follow in our relationship with God.  In that vein, one of its functions is to show us where the problem of human sin resides.  Paul debates this aspect in chapter 7 of his letter to the Romans when he affirms that, among other things, it is through the Law that sin becomes known, as he contemplates certain very clear prohibitions. The Law is intended to correct our conduct by showing us what is unlawful, but it has been proven insufficient to make us righteous before God.

Paul struggles with this agony of living a life that achieves comprehension of what constitutes good works but which repeatedly falls into wrongdoing, and through which he recognizes that what the Law could not achieve within itself, becomes our justification with God: through our new life in Christ, divine grace has overcome the power and the magnitude of the effects of human sin. Therefore, following Paul’s reasoning, our lives should no longer “persevere in sin” but rather do completely the opposite:  we should become “instruments of righteousness.”  God’s grace is overabundant for salvation. That is the constant calling we have as witnesses of Jesus Christ, to proclaim and live the grace of God, his favor for those who love righteousness and peace.

Prayer: Beloved God, show us your will at all times, through your Word and the work of your Spirit, and help us to be faithful, proclaiming you, serving you, loving and walking in your pathways. Amen.

CUANDO EL PECADO ABUNDÓ

ROMANOS 7: 7-25

“… más cuando el pecado abundó, sobreabundó la gracia”

Las Escrituras cumplen un rol importante para el cristiano, son fuente de inspiración y guía para indicarnos el camino a seguir en nuestra relación con Dios. En tal sentido una de las funciones que realiza es la de señalarnos dónde reside el problema del pecado humano. Pablo debate este aspecto en el capítulo 7 de la carta a los romanos al afirmar, entre otras cosas, que por la Ley es que se conoce el pecado, en cuanto contempla determinadas prohibiciones muy claras. La Ley intenta corregir nuestras conductas señalándonos lo incorrecto, pero se ha mostrado insuficiente para hacernos justos delante de Dios.

Pablo se debate en esta agonía de vivir una vida que logra comprender cuál debería ser el buen obrar pero que cae en el mal repetidamente; por ello reconoce que lo que la Ley en sí misma no podía lograr, esto es, nuestra justificación con Dios, por la nueva vida en Cristo la gracia divina ha sobrepasado el poder y la magnitud de los efectos del pecado humano. Por tanto, siguiendo el razonamiento paulino, ahora nuestras vidas no deben “perseverar en el pecado” sino todo lo contrario, ser “instrumentos de justicia”. La gracia de Dios sobreabunda para salvación.

Ese es el constante llamado como testigos de Jesucristo, proclamar y vivir la gracia de Dios, su favor por aquellos que aman el bien y la paz.

Oración: Querido Dios, muéstranos siempre tu voluntad, a través de tu Palabra y la acción de tu Espíritu, y ayúdanos para ser fieles, proclamándote, sirviendo, amando y andando en tus caminos. Amén.

CERTAINTY AND CONVICTION

HEBREWS 11:1-2; 12: 1-2

“…who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised…”

Hebrews 11:33

I once read that in a bible study, within the framework of an international event, the participants were asked to write down the names of people they considered to be heroes of the faith, such as those mentioned by the author of the letter to the Hebrews.  The result could not have been more impressive and inspiring.  On those huge sheets of paper spread out on the walls of the conference room appeared the names of famous or significant people (Calvin, Martin Luther King, Desmond Tutu), but alongside many of those names were also found numerous examples of what a particular individual  can mean to us personally in each of our personal faith pilgrimages.  Some wrote:  my grandmother, my mother, and many other close individuals.  Many made it clear:  you might be the only Bible that someone close to you comes to know. In order to be a hero of the faith you don’t need to perform a potent miracle. Rather, our faith needs to be a daily work-in-progress, amid trials and difficulties or joys and celebrations.  Let us not forget that the biblical author does not consider “conquering kingdoms” as proof of a hero’s faith, but rather that they also “administered justice, and gained what was promised”.

Prayer: We thank you for so many people who have nourished our Christian lives.  We ask you to give us the strength needed in order to also be examples for many. On this day we also pray for our male and female pastors; guide them in the difficult task of fulfilling your promises. Amen.

CERTEZA Y CONVICCIÓN

HEBREOS 11:1-2; 12: 1-2

Leí en cierta ocasión que en un estudio bíblico, dentro del marco de un evento internacional, se le pidió a los participantes que escribieran en unos papelógrafos los nombres de personas que consideraban héroes de la fe, al estilo de los mencionados por el autor de la epístola a los hebreos. El resultado no pudo ser menos que impresionante y motivador. En aquellas grandes hojas de papel colocadas en las paredes del salón, aparecieron nombres de personajes famosos o significativos (Calvino, Martin Luther King, Desmond Tutu), pero junto a tantos de estos nombres fueron también colocados numerosos ejemplos de lo que en lo personal puede alguien significar en el peregrinaje de la fe de cada uno de nosotros; así algunos escribieron: mi abuela, mi madre, y muchas otras personas cercanas. Es muy cierto lo que han dicho algunos: tú puedes ser la única Biblia que llegue a conocer alguien cercano a ti. Para ser un héroe de la fe no hace falta obrar un milagro portentoso, más bien se necesita un obrar consecuente a la fe en el día a día, en medio de pruebas y dificultades o de alegrías y celebraciones. No olvidemos que el autor bíblico no solamente considera el “alcanzar reinos” como prueba de la fe de aquellos héroes, sino además “hicieron justicia, alcanzaron promesas”.

Oración: Te damos gracias por tantas personas que han alimentado nuestra vida cristiana. Te pedimos nos des la fortaleza necesaria para ser también nosotros ejemplo para muchos. En este día también te pedimos por nuestras pastoras y nuestros pastores,  guíales en el difícil camino de alcanzar tus promesas. Amén.

All Saints Day

THE “ALL” IN THE COMMANDMENT

ROMANS 10: 8-15

“Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.”

Mark 16:15

A certain individual, after an experience of seeing children with terminal illnesses, decided to become a preacher in order to help people to know more about God and to draw near to faith as a source of hope and salvation.

I think that as Christians we have in some ways felt moved to speak to others about God in the face of such brutal realities:  neglected children in the streets, the products of dysfunctional families; people who have to endure daily painful medical treatments, or even to face death.  Some will tell us that as Christ’s followers we must take the message to those who are suffering. But Jesus teaches us something more.  His command has a more universal component:  to go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. We must announce and live the good news at all times and in all places, to all the world; that is the command. 

God calls us to be light; in our homes, in our community, at work, with friends, with strangers; may each experience lead us to reflect upon the marvelous gift that we have and to share it with love.

Prayer: Father, use us in the task to take your message to others. Amen.

Día de Todos los Santos

LOS “TODOS” DE UN MANDATO

ROMANOS 10: 8-15

“Id por todo el mundo y predicad

el evangelio a toda criatura”

Marcos 16:15

Cierta persona, tras una experiencia de ver niños con enfermedades terminales, manifestó su intención de predicar para ayudar a que las gentes conocieran más de Dios y se acercaran a la fe como recurso de esperanza y salvación.

Creo que de cierto modo como cristianos nos hemos sentido movidos a hablarles a otros de Dios frente a realidades tan impactantes: niños en las calles sin atención producto de familias disfuncionales, personas que diariamente tienen que ser sometidos a dolorosos tratamientos médicos, e incluso enfrentar una muerte penosa. Algunos nos dicen que como seguidores de Cristo tenemos que llevarles el mensaje a esos que están sufriendo. Pero Jesús nos enseña algo más. Su mandato tiene un componente más universal: el de ir por todo el mundo y predicar a toda criatura. Hay que anunciar y vivir las buenas nuevas en todo momento y lugar, a todo el mundo, ese es el mandato.

Quiera Dios que estemos llamados a ser luz; en nuestra casa, en el barrio, en el trabajo, con los amigos, con los desconocidos; que cada experiencia nos lleve a reflexionar sobre el maravilloso regalo que tenemos y nos permita compartirlo con amor.

Oración: Padre, úsanos en la tarea de llevar tu mensaje a otros. Amén.
