May 21, Saturday THE FORBIDDEN QUESTION JOHN 6:25-59

May 21, Saturday
THE FORBIDDEN QUESTION
JOHN 6:25-59

“All man’s efforts are for his mouth,
yet his appetite is never satisfied.”
Ecclesiastes 6:7

I once read about a businessman who had given a party to celebrate his success.  The guests came together in celebration of their host.  One of them commented on the good fortune that he had had: his business was doing well; he had a beautiful wife and some marvelous children.  To which the businessman replied: “You’re right.  These things are all going well for me…” but then in a more serious tone, pointing to his chest, he went on: “But don’t ask me how things are going here inside.”  That was the forbidden question.  What a lucid and awful confession!  It gave away this man’s confusion.  Social and family success fades in the face of such interior anguish, of this indefinable malaise that eats away at our contemporaries.  Indeed, neither professional successes nor amusement, nor the pleasures of social life can cure this inner unease. There is but one person who can do this and that someone is God.  He can give peace and true happiness.  He sees the misery hidden inside those hearts beneath deceptive appearances.  He knows the desire to fill in that void, the thirst for peace, for freedom.  He alone can give an answer to human needs. All it takes is for us to approach Him with the acknowledgment that we are incapable of achieving our happiness by ourselves.

What should I do?  Should I take the step to accept Christ in my life?

Prayer: Yes, today I accept you, Lord, as my Savior.  I want you to enter my life today and to inundate me with your holy love. Amen.

LA PREGUNTA PROHIBIDA
JUAN 6:25-59

May 20, Friday Celebration of the Dependent Church in Cidra (Unión de Reyes) THE SWALLOWS JEREMIAH 8:7

May 20, Friday
Celebration of the Dependent Church in Cidra (Unión de Reyes)

THE SWALLOWS
JEREMIAH 8:7

“You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is that you don’t know how to interpret this present time?”
Luke 12:56

In the autumn in European countries, the swallows gather upon the electrical and power cables.  Driven by instinct, they will soon flee from the cold season and assume the long flight of thousands of kilometers toward Africa, where the temperature is milder and where the abundance of flying insects, their food, will assure their survival.  In the spring they will reverse the journey; and thus, from one year to the next, the species survives.

In the Bible, God gives us these migratory birds as an example.  He wants us to be attentive, as they are, to the signs that he sends us and through which he indicates the urgency for us to draw ever closer to him.  The disorder of natural phenomena is accelerating, and scientists are worried about the dangers that these instabilities will entail for our planet.

Like the swallows, we need to be attentive to God’s signals, to be part of the divine cycle that assures our survival as a species. In our case, however, it is not only a matter of physical life, but of moral and spiritual life as well.  We need to place ourselves in God’s hands so that He will guide the direction of our decisions, of our desires and of our needs.

May God accompany us and bless us in our intentions and actions to draw ever closer to Him, as faithful and as constant as swallows!

Prayer: Lord, grant that we may be able to perceive your call in order to assure our eternal lives as of this very moment on earth.  We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

LAS GOLONDRINAS
JEREMIAS 8: 7

“Sabéis distinguir el aspecto del cielo y de la tierra;
¿y cómo no distinguís  este tiempo?”
Lucas 12:56

May 19, Thursday WHAT WILL TOMORROW BRING? GALATIANS 1:3-4

May 19, Thursday
WHAT WILL TOMORROW BRING?
GALATIANS 1:3-4

“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness.  He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”

II Peter 3:9

The perspective of the end of the world has always been presented as a spine-chilling and catastrophic vision. The prophecies about this topic make some laugh and others tremble.  At the present time, the findings of some scientists about the state of the planet and the possibility of a catastrophe that could destroy all of humanity are not reassuring.  The Bible does not have specific teachings about these topics that are so terrifying, and it does not give any date for when they will occur. No one can make predictions based on the Bible.  The symbolic language of the Book of Revelation, for example, does not try to impress anyone through frightening images, so that, through fear, they will turn to God.  The apocalypse inspired hope for the Christian men and women of its time and for us at present in order to keep our testimony and our faith alive in the midst of persecution.

The Word of God invites us to consider our lives on earth as transient and therefore to be lived to the fullest. We should not waste our time imagining or investigating the nature of the end times, when there is so much that we need to do today and now in order to fulfill God’s will.

We are living in critical and uncertain times, but God, who knows the future and loves all human beings, reminds us through his Word that today is a day of grace and salvation.  What will tomorrow bring?  Tomorrow is in God’s hands!

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, because you give me a new opportunity each day to repent and commit my life to you.  Amen.

May 18, Wednesday JESUS, OUR SUBSTITUTE I PETER 1:18-19

May 18, Wednesday
JESUS, OUR SUBSTITUTE
I PETER 1:18-19

“No man can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for him--”
Psalm 49:7

In France, a law was established in 1798 that made all twenty-year-old young men present themselves before the commission for military recruitment. Later a lottery system was designed for the formation of those who would be called to serve the nation.  But in order to free themselves from military service, the wealthiest could pay for a substitute.  In exchange for a sum of money, the latter had to serve in the place of the one who paid him.  In times of war it was rather common for a soldier to die while replacing another. In 1872 the substitution of soldiers was abolished. As of that moment one could no longer buy a substitute and thereby free himself of the risk of dying in the war.

By taking this reflection to a theological plane, we can say that Jesus Christ was our substitute.  He gave himself up in our place in order to suffer the judgment that should come down over us.  The great difference is that he did not ask us for anything in return.  Out of love for each one of us he died on a cross in order to save us.

Today’s invitation is to no longer delay.  It is time to go to Him right now.  Let us accept the abundant life that Jesus offers us.

Prayer: Today I wish to present myself before you, my good Jesus; I do not want to wait any longer.  Accept me with everything I have and am, with my limitations and strengths, but with the immense desire to renew myself every day. Amen.

JESÚS NUESTRO SUSTITUTO
I PEDRO 1:18-19

May 17, Tuesday LITTLE MUSIC BOXES EPHESIANS 4:1-12

May 17, Tuesday
MUSIC BOXES
EPHESIANS 4:1-12

“It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers.”
Ephesians 4:11

I have a friend who has been collecting little music boxes for many years. In addition to collecting them, she feels a sort of admiration for these beautiful and rare objects.  The other day she was telling me that sometimes she compares them to the different types of people with whom she has shared her life, and she described it to me in the following way:

“Some have many adornments on the outside, but they are empty on the inside.  Others have few external adornments but they are beautiful within. Some show us an interior full of fantasies when we open them.  Others are transparent and with just one look at them, we can tell how they will always be. And then there are those that we love only after having listened to the music from within them.”

Interesting, isn’t it?  Isn’t it witty?  I believe that what my friend is saying is quite true. Just as it is also true that our faith communities are filled with brothers and sisters, all of a heterogeneity that makes the Church into that great rainbow that God wants it to be.

There exist so many types of people; we are all different.  But what is certainly true is that the most beautiful melody, or the most terrible noise, can come out from the interior of each of us. It depends entirely on oneself. It is up to us to decide whether to merely adorn ourselves on the outside, or to adorn our lives.

Prayer: Lord, enlighten us so that we can be one of those boxes that only share the music and beauty from within ourselves. Amen.

CAJITAS DE MÚSICA
EFESIOS 4:1-12

“Y él mismo constituyó a unos apóstoles; a otros profetas;
a otros evangelistas; a otros pastores y maestros”
Efesios 4:11

May 16, Monday LET US THINK…AND ACT EZEKIEL 15:1-6

May 16, Monday
LET US THINK…AND ACT
EZEKIEL 15:1-6

“…How is the wood of a vine better than that of a branch on any of the trees in the forest?”
Ezekiel 15:2

Think…about a world that involves us and stirs us up.  Think about such a world and let us not run away from it, because we are part of its heart.

Think…a bit further and let’s stop without fear and look at the scenes and situations that the world rudely shows us. Let’s think about and be sincere about our meditation and widen our vision.  Let’s stop thinking only about ourselves, our clothing, our food, and our finances.  Because life is more than food, and our bodies are more than the clothing we wear.

Let’s think…about the children who die of hunger and cold, of human beings who die destroyed by enemy fire, of nations on the brink of disappearing beneath the power of arms, of the lack of love on earth.

Let’s think about these things, because even though it seems incredible, even in our churches distinctions are made between people on account of their social, financial, racial condition or sexual orientation and so many other criteria of exclusion.

Yes, it is time.  We’ve wasted a lot of time thinking about meaningless things.  Do we love him?  Then, let us look to our sides because to love him is to serve.  Let us think…let us act.

Prayer: Lord, do not allow our good intentions to remain fixed upon feeling sorry for another’s pain, but rather grant that we may contribute and do something for the solution to their problem. Amen.

EZEQUIEL 15:1-6

“… ¿Qué es la madera de vid
más que cualquier otra madera…?”
Ezequiel 15:2

May 15, Sunday THANKS TO GOD PSALM 100

May 15, Sunday
THANKS TO GOD
PSALM 100
“Give thanks in all circumstance,
for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
I Thessalonians 5:18

In every conversation when I was little I heard my grandmother say the phrase “Thanks to God.” She almost seemed to be repeating it unconsciously. And today I invite you to reflect upon this brief but urgent phrase of only three words. Do we recognize and sufficiently thank God for his constant presence in our lives?

The list of requests we make to God is immense, but what about our list of gratitude? Whether in sadness or in joy, in pain or in the plenitude of happiness, we need to give thanks to God from the heart. Furthermore, we should express our gratitude with a testimony of fidelity and service to our God.

Many Bible stories emphasize giving thanks. When Jesus broke bread, he blessed it and gave thanks to God before sharing it. Some people who had been healed were thankful in an express manner; others showed their gratitude with a sincere praise, or by putting themselves at the Master’s disposal. Today, whatever your situation may be, make a space in your devotion for thanksgiving. Make of your life a song of eternal thanks to the Lord.

Prayer:  Creator God, we thank you for your goodness, witnessed in the upsurge of life itself; for your company in each one of the seasons of our journey. We thank you for your fidelity, we thank you for so many and sacred things…Amen

Translated by John Walter

GRACIAS A DIOS
SALMO 100
I Tesalonicenses 5:18
