LET US CELEBRATE HIS PRESENCE

2 Peter 3:3-9

… “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised?”…

2 Peter 3:4

On the eve of the arrival of the twenty-first century, listening to predictions of the “end of the times” was very popular, as it was to listen to preachers mention that Christ was “at the door” in their sermons. After the first five-year period, such emphasis has fallen off and the controversial subject of the Second Coming is practically not mentioned.

The Greek term “parousìa” indicates not only “coming” but also “presence”.  We Christians should always have this in mind: we glory in God due to the coming of His Son into the world, because of his acts of redemption and his teachings about the abundant life of the Kingdom. We thus maintain (or should maintain) behavior according to these teachings, in accordance with what we say we believe.  But we also celebrate that definitive arrival of His Kingdom, where Christ will be the All in All (1 Corinthians 15:28).

The Christian celebration of Advent intends to remind us and make us conscious of this great truth: in the same way that we believe in the incarnation, we also believe in the glorious final manifestation of Jesus Christ, as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.  In the meantime, let us live in order to celebrate his presence among us as people of God, because it is up to us to be witnesses of the Advent.

           

Prayer: Lord, help us to lead lives that give witness to Your constant, redeeming and saving presence amid this world that so greatly needs you. Amen.

CELEBREMOS SU PRESENCIA

… ¿Dónde está la promesa de su advenimiento?

En vísperas del arribo del Siglo XXI, era muy popular escuchar predicciones acerca del “fin de los tiempos”, y oír a predicadores mencionar en sus sermones que Cristo “estaba a la puerta”. Pasado el primer lustro, tal énfasis ha decaído y prácticamente no se menciona el controvertido tema de la Segunda Venida.

El término griego “parousìa”, indica no solo “venida”, sino también “presencia”. Los cristianos debemos tener siempre presente esto: nos gloriamos en Dios por la venida de Su Hijo al mundo, por sus hechos de redención y sus enseñanzas  acerca de la vida abundante del Reino. Mantenemos entonces (o debemos mantener) una conducta afín con tales enseñanzas, siendo consecuentes con lo que decimos profesar, pero también   celebramos esa llegada definitiva de Su Reino, donde Cristo será el Todo de Todos  (1 Corintios 15:28)

La fiesta cristiana de Adviento intenta recordarnos y hacernos conscientes de esta gran verdad: así como creemos en la encarnación, también creemos en la manifestación  gloriosa final de  Jesucristo, como Rey de Reyes y Señor de Señores. Mientras tanto, vivamos para celebrar su presencia entre nosotros como pueblo de Dios, pues nos corresponde ser testigos del Advenimiento.

           

Oración: Señor, haznos vivir vidas que testimonien Tu presencia constante, redentora y salvífica, en medio de este mundo tan necesitado de ti. Amén.

God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.

1 Corinthians 12:18

Surely most of us have seen how a factory works. Each cog of each machine almost always has its own essential and unique function. From the smallest screw to the largest piece of machinery, each one has to be in its precise place; otherwise, the entire mechanism stops working.

Who conducts all these appliances? A technician who knows how to manage each one of them, of course.

There’s an essential difference between you and a machine:  you are a living being and not an inanimate piece of equipment.  And God is not a despotic master, but a good and tender Father and a firm and sweet mother at the same time. Let us therefore lift our eyes toward God, who knows why we find ourselves in a certain place and who knows our usefulness.

Put your trust in the Lord; allow yourself to be driven by Him; remain faithful and be calm, because He is our wise guide. His wisdom is such that He sent us his Son Jesus to show us the way of Salvation.

Prayer: Lord, you are the only one who knows my purpose, the why and wherefore behind my placement in this world. Help me to carry out my service in the best possible way in order to please you.  Grant that this advent allow me to be conscious of your presence in the birth of a little child who leads our steps every day! Amen.

Sin duda casi todos hemos visto cómo funciona una fábrica.  Cada engranaje de cada máquina tiene su motivo casi siempre esencial y único. Desde el más pequeño tornillo hasta la más grande máquina deben estar en el preciso lugar; de lo contrario, todo el mecanismo deja de funcionar.

¿Quién conduce estos aparatos? Por supuesto, un técnico que conoce el manejo de cada una de ellas.

Hay una diferencia esencial entre usted y la máquina: usted es un miembro viviente y no un engranaje inanimado. Y Dios no es un amo despótico, sino un Padre bueno y tierno o una madre firme y dulce al mismo tiempo.

Elevemos pues las miradas hacia Dios, quien sabe por qué nos hallamos en ese puesto y para qué servimos.

Ponga en el Señor su confianza, déjese conducir por Él, permanezca fiel y esté tranquilo, pues es nuestro guía sabio. Tal es su sabiduría que nos envió a su Hijo, Jesús, para mostrarnos el camino de la Salvación

Oración: Señor, tú eres el único que conoce  mi propósito, por qué y para qué fui colocado en este mundo. Ayúdame a desempeñarme lo mejor posible para agradarte. ¡Qué este adviento me permita ser consciente de tu presencia naciendo en un pequeño niño que conduce nuestros pasos cada día! Amén.

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

Romans 8:37

If I had given up each time that I’ve felt sad, powerless or defeated, I think that I would not be writing this. If I had given up each time that things had not turned out the way I wanted them to, I would have been distant from God for many years. What I am trying to say is that we all face situations which are very difficult; times of silence from God when we feel that He is not speaking to us, or when we are simply not listening to Him.  We pass through periods of desert where the heat suffocates us, and stormy periods when the waters are so strong that we think we are going to drown.

And yet, here we are. We all have stories of this sort when we were at the point of giving up.  But we didn’t, because God gave us the strength and the desire to keep on fighting. He sent us the exact word that we needed at the precise moment. Not giving up should be the motto of every Child of God.  There will be many moments in our lives when the desire to give up will take hold of us, but it will never be an option.

If you feel weak and tired today, and are thinking of giving up, then it is because He prepared this meditation especially so that you would know that He has not left you alone and will not abandon you.

There will never be a valid excuse for giving up, if we indeed know that God gives us the strength, and that He will be at our side in each difficult moment we experience.  With God at our side, we cannot give up.

Prayer: Lord, hold me up when I have the desire to fall; and when I fall, help me to get up again. Amen.

Si por cada vez que me he sentido triste, sin fuerzas y derrotado me hubiera dado por vencido, creo que hoy no estaría escribiendo esto. Si por cada vez que las cosas no han salido como yo he querido hubiese renunciado, ya hace muchos años que estuviera lejos de Dios. Lo que quiero decir es que todos enfrentamos situaciones que nos son muy  difíciles, tiempos de silencios de Dios en donde sentimos que Él no nos habla, o simplemente no lo escuchamos, períodos de desierto donde el calor nos ahoga, períodos de tormenta en donde las aguas son tan fuertes que pensamos que vamos a morir ahogados. Y sin embargo, aquí estamos. Todos tenemos historias de ese tipo donde estuvimos a punto de darnos por vencido. Pero no lo hicimos, porque Dios nos dio fuerzas y deseos de seguir luchando. Él envió la palabra exacta que necesitábamos en el momento exacto. No darse por vencido tendría que ser un lema de todo Hijo de Dios. Habrá muchos momentos en nuestra vida en donde el deseo de rendirnos se apoderará de nosotros, pero jamás será una opción. Si hoy te sientes debilitado, cansado y pensando  en  rendirte, entonces es que Él preparó  esta meditación especialmente para que supieras que no te ha dejado solo ni te dejará.

Nunca habrá una excusa valedera para darse por vencido, pero  sí sabemos que Dios nos da las fuerzas, y que  estará a nuestro lado en cada momento difícil que pasemos. Con Dios de nuestro lado, no podemos darnos por vencido.

Oración: Señor, sostenme cuando tenga deseos de  caer;  y cuando caiga,  ayúdame a levantarme. Amén.

GREATNESS IN SMALL THINGS

ISAIAH 9:6-7

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.

Isaiah 9:6

In this moment in which we are going through the very important liturgical time period that is Advent, I invite you to meditate upon the greatness of God. Since ancient times the people of Israel understood how to place the attributes of their God Jehovah, who had revealed Himself to them as the God of liberation and provider of the Promised Land.  Many centuries passed and the understanding that the people had of God deepened throughout the ups and downs of history that turned them into slaves of various empires and also made them distance themselves on numerous occasions from Jehovah, who always accepted their return, after the pronouncement of their repentance through their prophets. In this way, Jehovah continued to act as a God of neither vengeance nor rage, but of forgiveness and reconciliation.

But what the people of Israel did not contemplate was the definitive revelation of God through the incarnation of a humble child.  The maximum greatness which they praised is now manifested through fragility, humility and simplicity. That was the manifestation of God that was not understood by everyone, because it is very difficult to unite greatness with smallness; grandiloquence with simplicity.

Today it is also difficult for us to understand God in terms of fragility. This Advent is a new opportunity to try to approach this ministry which uncovers true power and glory within that which appears to be utterly insignificant.

Prayer: Lord, you are great in smallness. Cover us in your mantle of love and care.  Renew in us your Holy Spirit. Amen.

LA GRANDEZA DE DIOS EN LO PEQUEÑO

ISAÍAS 9:6-7

Porque nos ha nacido un niño, se nos ha concedido un hijo;

la soberanía reposará sobre sus hombros…

Isaías 9:6

En este momento en el que transitamos el tiempo litúrgico tan importante que es el Adviento, les invito a que meditemos acerca de la grandeza de Dios.

Desde los tiempos antiguos el pueblo de Israel supo colocar los atributos adecuados a su Dios Yavé, que se le había revelado como el Dios de la liberación y la promesa de la tierra. Así pasaron muchos siglos y la comprensión de Dios que tenía el pueblo fue profundizándose entre avatares de la historia que los llevó a ser esclavos de diversos imperios y también a apartarse en numerosas ocasiones de Yavé, quien siempre los recibía de vuelta, tras anunciar arrepentimiento a través de sus profetas. Así poco a poco, Yavé fue definiéndose como un Dios no ya de las venganzas y la ira, sino del perdón y la reconciliación. 

Pero lo que el pueblo de Israel no tenía en mente era la revelación definitiva de Dios a través de la encarnación en un humilde niño. La máxima grandeza a la que habían alabado ahora se muestra a través de la fragilidad, humildad y sencillez. Esa fue una manifestación de Dios que no todos comprendieron, porque es muy difícil unir lo grande y lo pequeño, lo grandilocuente y lo sencillo.

También hoy a nosotros nos cuesta trabajo comprender a Dios en términos de fragilidad. Este Adviento es una nueva oportunidad para tratar de acercarnos a ese misterio que descubre el verdadero poder y la gloria, en lo aparentemente más insignificante.

Oración: Señor, tú eres grande en lo pequeño. Cúbrenos con tu manto de amor y cuidados. Renuévanos en tu Espíritu Santo. Amén.

Being alive is risky. If we were to add up the experiences of all humanity from their beginnings, we could not ascertain a life of tranquility and without obstacles.  A peaceful life and one without obstacles is not life. We live from crisis to crisis.  This moves us to affirm that one does not get out of a crisis. And we Cubans have a long experience with this.  We have been living from one crisis to another for many years, in a constant struggle for material and spiritual survival.

It is said that crises are the responses to the incoherence and struggles that life itself generates, and that they are a response rather than a problem that can be resolved.

I remember a Cuban film titled Plaff o Demasiado miedo a la vida (Too afraid of life), in which the protagonist lived with the fear that his neighbors would throw eggs at him. The plot seems simple and trivial but there are times when our fears lead us to obsessive attitudes of distrust and lack of motivation.

Furthermore, like the disciples, we, too, are navigating our lives through tempestuous seas, and it seems to us that Jesus has forgotten us. The storm that is shaking us up today represents the crisis of a shift, that comes as a response to the conflicts that are generated by our lack of faith and the weakness of our convictions.

Perhaps fear is now impeding you from seeing the other bank, or you have not been able to understand the Christ whom even the wind and the seas obey (v. 41) , and who, even though he appears to be asleep,  is firmly and assuredly taking you to the other side where you will find the happiness you seek.

Prayer: Lord, change our storms into calm waters.  Heal our fears and grant that we may feel your peace. Amen.

Día de las Personas con Discapacidades

VIVIR SIN MIEDO

No se angustien ni tengan miedo.

Estar vivo es un riesgo. Si reuniéramos en un tomo las experiencias de toda la humanidad desde sus inicios, no podríamos asegurar una vida tranquila y sin tropiezos. Una vida tranquila y sin tropiezos no es vida. Vivimos de crisis en crisis. Esto nos mueve a afirmar que no se sale de una crisis. Más bien se cambia de crisis. Y en esto los cubanos tenemos una larga experiencia. Hace muchos años que vivimos de una crisis en otra, en lucha constante por la sobrevivencia material y espiritual. Se dice que las crisis son respuestas a las incoherencias y tropiezos que la propia vida genera, y no son un problema a superar sino una respuesta.

Recuerdo una película cubana que se llama Plaff o Demasiado miedo a la vida, en la que la protagonista vivía con miedo de que los vecinos le lanzaran huevos. La trama parece sencilla y trivial pero en ocasiones nuestros miedos nos llevan a actitudes obsesivas de desconfianza y falta de apertura.

Además, como los discípulos, nosotros también navegamos en la vida por mares tempestuosos, y nos parece que Jesús nos ha olvidado. La tempestad que hoy nos sacude representa las crisis de turno, que viene como respuesta a los conflictos que generan nuestra falta de fe y la debilidad de nuestras convicciones. Tal vez el miedo te impide ahora ver la otra orilla, o no has podido entender a ese Cristo que hasta el viento y el mar lo obedecen (v.41), y que aunque aparentemente está dormido, te conduce firme y seguro hacia la otra orilla donde se encuentra la felicidad que buscas.

Oración: Señor, cambia nuestras tempestades en sosiego. Cura nuestros miedos y permite que podamos sentir tu paz. Amén

GOD ALWAYS ACTS IN OUR FAVOR

PSALM 37:1-9

Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will always act in your favor…

                                                                                                                                          Psalm 37:5

One way or another, God always uses his infinite creativity in order to surprise us and to act in our favor. He has done so from the beginning: when he gave Noah specific instructions for building the ark; when he gave Joshua and the people of Israel the order to knock down the walls of Jericho, which had been impenetrable up to that time, by marching around the wall and everyone all together giving one great shout.

He also did it when three young Hebrew men were thrown into a burning furnace due to not wanting to eat food which had been sacrificed to pagan gods, and he protected them. And when he turned hungry lions into inoffensive kittens so that they wouldn’t devour his servant Daniel.

I could describe many stories in the Bible when He intervened. And he did it in a way that nobody had imagined, using his creativity in order to protect his own. I don’t know exactly how God does it, but we can be certain that He always does it!

You may find yourself in a situation today in which for all that you think about it, you aren’t able to find a possible solution.  And yet, your job is not to figure out how God will do it; your job is to believe that He will do it.  We sometimes waste our time, exhausting ourselves with worry and becoming discouraged thinking about how we are going to do it when that is in reality God’s work.  

Stop exhausting yourself and worrying about situations that are out of your reach and of your ability to resolve.  When things escape from our hands we can do nothing else but trust in what He is able to do.  How? When? I don’t know. But He always does it.

Prayer: Lord, I want to thank you for your infinite grace in my life. Thank you for your care and your unconditional love for me. Amen.

DIOS SIEMPRE ACTÚA A NUESTRO FAVOR

SALMO 37:1-9

Pon tu vida en sus manos, confía plenamente en él,

y él actuará en tu favor

De alguna manera, Dios siempre utiliza su infinita creatividad para sorprendernos y actuar a nuestro favor. Lo hizo desde el principio cuando dio a Noé instrucciones específicas  para que construyese el arca; cuando le dio la orden a Josué y al pueblo de Israel para que con unas vueltas a la muralla de Jericó y un grito unánime, derribara unas murallas que para ese entonces eran impenetrables. También lo hizo cuando tres jóvenes hebreos fueron tirados a un  horno de fuego ardiente por no querer comida sacrificada a dioses paganos, y Él los protegió, y cuando convirtió a leones hambrientos en inofensivos gaticos para evitar que devoraran a su siervo Daniel. Podría describir muchas historias de la Biblia donde Él intervino. Y lo hizo de manera  que nadie se imaginaba, utilizando su creatividad para proteger  a los suyos. No sé muy bien como lo hace Dios, pero de algo podemos estar seguros ¡Él siempre lo hace!

Quizás hoy te encuentres en una situación en que por más que pienses no encuentras una solución posible. Sin embargo,  tu tarea no es investigar cómo Dios lo hará, tu tarea es creer que Él lo hará. A veces perdemos nuestro tiempo, afanándonos al extremo  preocupándonos y desanimándonos pensando en cómo lo haremos cuando eso es en realidad tarea de Dios. Deja de afanarte y de preocuparte por situaciones que están fuera de tu alcance  y  de tu capacidad de solución. Cuando las  cosas se escapan de nuestras manos no podemos hacer nada más que confiar en lo que Él es capaz de hacer. ¿Cómo, cuándo? No lo sé. Pero Él siempre lo hace.

Oración: Señor, te quiero agradecer  por tu infinita gracia en mi vida. Gracias por tus cuidados y tu amor incondicional. Amén.

Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”

John 5:8

In this passage of the Holy Scriptures we are shown how a disabled person, in Jesus’s time, in addition to the great burden that the disability already represented, also had to suffer discrimination for being considered a doer or heir of wrongdoing. This is perhaps one of the reasons for which nobody would take him to the healing waters of the pool and he therefore remained deprived of the possibility of being healed. In other words, there was a double condition of exclusion: the disability itself and the moral judgment placed upon the person with the disability. Jesus, however, once again teaches us a profound lesson about how to act in life, beyond the prejudices and morals that curtail happiness.

Even though people living with HIV have no reason to be disabled persons, the same double exclusion discussed in this biblical passage hangs over them. They fall victim to actions of segregation which can often be more painful than the effects of the disease.

Let us encourage one another to be like Jesus and not to judge the people around us because of this or that condition. Let us accompany those who today are consolidating their efforts to combat HIV through messages and actions of solidarity. I am certain that God is with us in this endeavor.

Prayer: Good and gracious God of mercy, today we pray for those living with HIV, that you will protect them from humiliating exclusions; we pray for ourselves, that we may know how to live according to your son Jesus; we pray for scientists the world over who are searching for a cure for this illness. Amen.

Día de la lucha contra el SIDA

Liberar, no condenar

En este pasaje de la sagrada Escritura podemos advertir cómo una persona discapacitada, en los tiempos de Jesús, además de la gran carga que representaba la discapacidad en sí, también tenía que sufrir la discriminación por ser considerado como hacedor o heredero de maldición. Es quizás esa una de las razones por las que nadie lo acercaba a las salutíferas aguas del estanque y quedaba así privado de la posibilidad de su sanidad. Es decir, existe una doble condición de exclusión: la discapacidad misma y la valoración moral que sobre la persona con discapacidad se hace. Jesús, sin embargo, una vez más nos da lecciones profundas acerca de cómo actuar en la vida, más allá de prejuicios y moralismos que cercenan la felicidad.

Aunque las personas que viven con VIH no tienen por qué ser personas discapacitadas, sí pende sobre ellas este doble juicio comentado en el pasaje leído. Las acciones de segregación de las cuales son víctimas en muchas ocasiones pueden representar los más dolorosos efectos de la enfermedad.

Animémonos a ser como Jesús y no juzgar por tal o cuál condición a las personas que nos rodean. A través de mensajes y acciones de solidaridad y empatía, acompañemos a quienes un día como hoy unen sus esfuerzos para enfrentar al VIH. Estoy seguro de que Dios está con nosotros en este empeño.

Oración: Dios bueno y de misericordia, rogamos hoy por las personas que viven con VIH, que los guardes de exclusiones que vejan; rogamos por nosotros, para que sepamos vivir según Jesús tu hijo; rogamos por científicos de todo el mundo que buscan la cura de esta enfermedad. Amén.
