Wednesday, December 14 THE LORD IS RETURNING SOON PHILIPPIANS 4:4-7

Wednesday, December 14
THE LORD IS RETURNING SOON
PHILIPPIANS 4:4-7

...The Lord is near…
Philippians 4:5b

“Put on a good front in bad times” could have been the spirit that inspired Paul’s words when he wrote his letter to the Philippians. The storm of persecution had already befallen the believers of that congregation. Paul himself was a prisoner in Rome; nevertheless, this man felt the duty of accompanying his brothers in faith who live in a time of tribulation, and does it by using words of joy and happiness. “Be always filled with joy, I repeat, be joyful.”

Many people live each day complaining about their illnesses and problems; they hardly have time to think about the problems of other people, much less offer them hope.

Let’s ask ourselves: How would the people who submitted to days of danger and persecutions receive those words? Paul knew perfectly well that Christian joy didn’t depend on anything earthly; rather that it had its source in Christ’s presence. Therefore, he knew that whoever had Christ in his heart would always be joyful. That sentiment is fortified when the certainty that the Lord is near is made more vivid, that he is coming soon. If we trust in that, the dangers and evils that stalk us are unimportant; we will never again lose our hope and our joy.

Prayer:  Father, prepare us to wait for you. Bless us each day of our lives until we are face to face with you. Help us to share words of hope and joy so others may be able to confront the tribulations and difficulties of each day with faith in you. We pray in Jesus’ name, our hope. Amen.

EL SEÑOR VUELVE PRONTO
FILIPENSES 4:4-7

...El Señor está cerca...
Filipenses 4: 5b

PILGRIMAGES TOWARD DIALOGUE
MATTHEW 8:28-34

When he arrived at the other side at the region of the Gadarnenes…

Matthew 8:28

Some time ago we received a Muslim youth in our church. He was excited about sharing his faith experience using a photographic presentation on his pilgrimage to Mecca (the sacred place of Islam). For us it inspired the desire to listen to him and satisfy our doubts concerning this religion. The event took place in an ambience of respectful dialogue. For me it was a marvelous experience of cultural learning. The presentation impressed me because it gave me the possibility of affirming my Christian identity. Furthermore, this exchange made me reflect upon the courage we should have to create empathy and dialogue with those we believe to be different.

On many occasions we need to make an effort to go to the other shore. We throw ourselves into knowing different experiences, we hear about other realities, yet we raise many walls that limit our communication and we remain safely in port, in what we know.

Jesus himself dared to travel through Samaria and to dialogue with a lone woman at a well (John 4: 1-42); he acceded to the request of a Syro-Phoenician woman (Mark 7: 24-30); he recognized that God’s grace was manifested far beyond Israel’s borders (Luke 4: 25-27); and he invited us to be his witnesses, even to the ends of the earth (Acts 1: 6-11). So let’s imitate Jesus and make for the other shore to strengthen and affirm our identity. Let’s make these pilgrimages toward dialogue possible.

Prayer:  Oh our God, give us courage and strength that we may be disposed to crossing to other shores, to know other realities. Grant that we always recognize you as our God of history in our meetings of dialogue. May we be welcoming and hospitable this Advent and always. Amen.

PEREGRINACIONES HACIA EL DIÁLOGO
MATEO 8:28-34

Monday, December 12
Celebration of the Dependent Church “Vegas” (Nueva Paz)
FILL US WITH THE SPIRIT
EPHESIANS: 5:1-20

…instead, be filled with the Spirit…

Ephesians 5:18
The tensions of daily life tire us and we need something to distract us. Distraction is necessary, and can, if we take care in the form we employ it, be very healthy in our lives. These distractions should never be disorderly. Paul tells us that we should tread cautiously, not as fools, rather as wise men, because the days are evil. We should never act recklessly, rather attuning our steps to God’s will.

Direct your eyes ahead and ask yourself, “Are we truly filled with God’s Spirit, or are we so laden with problems and upsets that we don’t allow it any space?” What does this call to feel ourselves Full of Spirit mean?

How should we be full of the Spirit? By reading the word constantly, by praying fervently that the Father might bestow wisdom, joy and love; by behaving justly and by building peace around us…

Christ said that his Father would give this Spirit abundantly to those who ask; meaning, to those who walked unswervingly in their journey, without vacillation. Therefore, let’s spend this Advent with the earnest desire to allow the Holy Spirit to flow through our existence.

Prayer:  We ask, God, that you teach us to walk wisely in the Spirit. Be with us this Advent and fill us with the Spirit. Amen.

LLENOS DEL ESPÍRITU
EFESIOS 5 :1-20

…antes bien sed llenos del Espíritu…

Efesios  5:18

Sunday, December 11 THE ALARM CLOCK JOB 33:29-30

Sunday, December 11

THE ALARM CLOCK
JOB 33:29-30

...God does all these things to a person - twice, even three times –
to turn them back from the pit, that the light of life may shine on them.

Job 33:29-30

Many years ago I heard the news of a young airline flight attendant whose life was saved thanks to an alarm clock that didn’t work.

The function of an alarm clock is normally to alert us at a given moment to avoid difficulties. Modern alarm clocks, suited particularly for the sleepy-heads who don’t react quickly, emit a sound that doesn’t stop on its own. Was it only a circumstantial effect of her clock, or something more powerful? Might we say that God directed the circumstances? That at some point she might have considered that God had the fate of human beings in his hands and was involved in everything that happens to them?

It’s of utmost importance that we don’t let the moment slide by in which we should make a decision in our lives. At times God also uses an alarm clock to remind us that we should wake up and direct our lives toward another sound—because if we were to continue in our present direction the results might not be the best.

Let’s be attentive. Advent is a time to be attentive and to awaken from our lethargy. Let’s let God’s voice surprise us in our deep sleep, allowing us to walk in his ways with the confidence of his protection.

Prayer:  Lord, may it only be your voice that awakens us and leads us in sure routes. Amen.

EL DESPERTADOR
JOB 33:29-30

Estemos atentos a escucharlo.

Saturday, December 10 BE ON YOUR GUARD 2 PETER 3: 13-18

Saturday, December 10
BE ON YOUR GUARD
2 PETER 3: 13-18
Therefore, dear friends, since you already know this, be on your guard…
2 Peter 3:17a

Most people recognize the Advent season because the liturgical colors at church are changed to purple, and Christmas ornaments appear.  This verse invites us to be on our guard because of whose arrival? That of Baby Jesus? Obviously this evangelical note is not referring to the birth of the child Jesus in Bethlehem, since this had already occurred! It is referring to something or to someone that we believers await: to the invitation that the Lord makes to each one of us to meet with him at the end of history.

This biblical text responded to the expectations that encourage the community of faith in the early church, when they sensed that the end of the world was about to arrive. The Word of God is a constant invitation to remain well on our guard. Jesus himself always warned about the need to open our eyes and to care for the welfare of the sons and daughters of God.  This is because He is going to ask us to account for ourselves when we meet Him again. The opposite of attention is distraction. Unfortunately our modern world and especially all of this pre-Christmas season, fills us with noises, images and fleeting feelings that divert the necessary attention from entering more deeply into the mystery of God. The most serious danger that threatens us is that of living in distraction and forgetting what is essential: that there is a better world to make.  Advent invites us to do something, even if it is small, each day, in order to improve the lives of many people in this world.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for this time of Advent. Grant that it may be for us like the dawn of a new life in you. Amen.

MANTÉNGASE ATENTO
2 PEDRO 3: 13-18

Así que ustedes, queridos hermanos, puesto que
ya saben esto de antemano, manténganse alerta…
2 Pedro 3: 17a

Friday, December 9 THE STRENGTH WHICH COMES FROM THE LORD PSALM 23:1-6

Friday, December 9
THE STRENGTH WHICH COMES FROM THE LORD
PSALM 23:1-6

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.
Psalm 23:4
I invite all of you to reread this well-known psalm in the light of this Advent. Perhaps many people feel so overwhelmed at this time that they don’t even have any prospects for Christmas.

We experience so much anguish, so many distasteful and difficult moments in life.  At times we confront situations that we think we will never be able to overcome, such as illness, loneliness, etc.

At times, we even lose the joy of life. But Advent is hope. It is an opportunity to look at Mary’s life and to see that as difficult as our burdens may be, God is with us and will fill us with his light.

The psalmist invites us to think of God as our shield and strength.  If we ask for his help and we place ourselves in his hands, our lives will turn completely towards new horizons.

Let us raise our eyes toward heaven and ask our God to give us enough strength to move forward amid our valleys of the shadow of death.  Let us trust in the strength that comes from God, the result of which will be able to pulse in our beings.

Prayer: Lord, beloved God, help us to secure our faith, so that we can feel your presence in each minute of our lives. Be with us at this time and grant that we could live it with hope for your birth. Amen.

LA FORTALEZA QUE VIENE DEL SEÑOR
SALMO 23:1-6

THE TIME OF WAITING
AMOS 4:11-13

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise…
2 Peter 3:9

When things are going badly; when the problems that strike at humanity in general become so unbearable that they lacerate our sensitivity— that is when we long for Jesus Christ to come, in accordance with his promise.  It is in those moments that we desire for God to definitively establish his reign of peace and righteousness.

But we could ask ourselves, as did the prophets of the Old Testament: What will that anxiously awaited day be like?  Will it be as we are hoping or will there be something that will surprise us?

The day of the Lord is also a day of judgment. It is very easy for us to judge the actions of others, but it often becomes impossible for us to judge ourselves.

Advent is a time of waiting. It is also a moment for remembering that, just as God became incarnate and lived among us, this will once again occur at some moment in history, when his presence will be reverenced and sanctified.

The prayer to Our Father exhorts us to ask for both of these things: the sanctification of His Name and the coming of His Kingdom.

Let us devote ourselves to this time of waiting, acknowledging our errors and transforming our conduct, so that the arrival of the Lord will find us prepared.

Prayer: Grant us, Oh God, to work in this world acknowledging your lordship.  Grant that by doing this, we may live and wait for your coming with confidence.  Amen.

EL TIEMPO DE LA ESPERA
AMOS 4:11-13

El Señor no retarda su venida…
2 Pedro 3:9
