REMEMBERING

HEBREWS 12:1-3

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,

let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely,

and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us,

It is helpful to remember the work of so many pastors who are not among us today, especially those who at some point in their lives and in their pastoral work took time to write. Such is the case of the one we are going to remember today, the Rev. Sergio Manejías. Born in Remedios, Villa Clara, September 14, 1909, he graduated from the Rio Piedras Seminary in Puerto Rico. He returned to Cuba to begin his pastoral work, which took place in Coliseo, in Cárdenas, Matanzas, where he opened a school. He began writing poetry at age 8 and continued the practice his whole life. It is exactly one of these poems that we consider today reflecting and meditating on its beautiful words.

Trilogy

Brothers, for those who don’t know how to pray: let us pray

For the sorrows of so many, for the pain of others: let us pray

For the sacred joy of life, let us sing

For the grace and glory of God: let us sing

For the Reign of God, for his Holy Word: let us struggle

For redeeming lives misguided in evil, let us struggle

As the Christian life is praying, singing, and struggling.

Prayer: Lord, we give you thanks for the life of so many pastors and leaders who have gone before us. Thank you for their work and deeds supporting your Church. May this poem help us to be more understanding of others and help us be able to pray, sing, and struggle for you. May our faith be strengthened by remembering those who have gone before us! Amen.

Por lo tanto, también nosotros, que tenemos tan grande nube de testigos a nuestro alrededor, liberémonos de todo peso

y del pecado que nos asedia, y corramos con paciencia

la carrera que tenemos por delante

Resulta provechoso recordar la obra de tantos pastores que hoy no se encuentran entre nosotros, sobre todo aquellos que en algún momento de sus vidas y en su trabajo pastoral dedicaron tiempo a escribir. Tal es el caso del que vamos a recordar hoy, que es el Rev. Sergio Manejías. Nacido en la ciudad de Remedios, Villa Clara en septiembre 14 de 1909. Se graduó en el Seminario de Río Piedras, Puerto Rico. Regresó a Cuba para comenzar su obra pastoral, lo cual hizo en Coliseo, Cárdenas, Matanzas. Allí abrió una escuela. A la edad de 8 años comenzó a escribir poesías, algo que lo acompañaría toda su vida. Precisamente una de esas poesías es esta que traemos hoy para reflexionar y meditar en sus bellas palabras.

Hermanos, por los que no saben orar: oremos

Por las penas de tantos, por el dolor de otros: oremos

Por la santa alegría de la vida, cantemos

Por la gracia y la gloria de Dios: cantemos

Por el Reino de Dios, por su Santa Palabra: luchemos

Que la vida cristiana es orar, cantar y luchar.

Oración: Señor, te damos gracias por la vida de tantos pastores y líderes que nos antecedieron. Gracias por su obra y acción en favor de tu Iglesia. Permite que este poema nos ayude a ser más comprensibles con los demás y poder orar, cantar y luchar por ti. ¡Qué nuestra fe se fortalezca recordando el testimonio de quienes nos antecedieron! Amén.

CLOTHE YOURSELF IN LOVE

COLOSSIANS 3: 12-17

Above all, clothe yourselves with love,

which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

Colossians 3:14 (NRSV)

How many mornings have we gotten up facing our window or closet, hopelessly contemplating its contents and thinking that we don’t have anything to wear? What we really mean is that we don’t have anything that makes us feel that we have a special look for the day. We want to look good, and sometimes, regardless of the clothes we have selected, we don’t feel good about anything.

However, there is an article of clothing that we all have at our disposal that always fits us well. It always makes our appearance adequate, and it always makes us look better in the eyes of others. When we are dressed in it, we are beautiful no matter what clothes we have on. When we dress in this outfit, we become more popular; people seek us out and admire us more greatly.

            You ask what this clothing is and where can you buy it.

This clothing is love and you can’t buy it anywhere. It is free and it’s always available thanks to the Holy Spirit. When we cry out to Him to help us love others, He covers us with a beautiful cloak which attracts people to us and makes us perfectly pleasant in all respects.

Prayer: Beloved God, as I dress myself every day, help me to remember that the most important clothing to wear is your love. Amen.

VÍSTETE DE AMOR

COLOSENSES 3: 12-17

Por encima de todo, vístanse de amor, que es el vínculo perfecto.

Colosenses 3:14

¿Cuántas mañanas hemos estado de pie, frente a nuestro escaparate o closet, contemplando sin esperanza su contenido y pensando que no tenemos nada que ponernos? Lo que queremos decir en realidad es que no tenemos nada que nos haga sentir con un look especial para el día. Queremos lucir bien y a veces, independientemente del vestuario seleccionado, no nos sentimos bien con nada.

No obstante, hay un accesorio que todos tenemos a nuestra disposición y que siempre nos queda bien. Hace que el aspecto siempre sea adecuado y en todo momento nos hace ver mejor a los ojos de los demás. Cuando vamos vestidos con él, somos bellos, sin importar la ropa que llevemos puesta. Cuando nos vestimos con este atuendo, nos volvemos más populares, nos buscan y nos admiran más.

Te preguntarás cuál es ese accesorio y dónde lo puedes comprar.

Ese accesorio es el amor y no lo puedes comprar en ninguna parte. Es gratis y siempre está disponible a través del Espíritu Santo. Cuando clamamos a Él para que nos ayude a amar a los demás, Él nos cubre con una hermosa capa que atrae a las personas a nosotros y nos hace perfectamente agradables en todos los aspectos.

Oración: Amado Dios, al vestirme cada día ayúdame a recordar que el accesorio más importante que puedo vestir es tu amor. Amén.

Meeting the Risen Jesus

Matthew 28:16-20

And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.

            The risen Jesus calls his friends, his brothers, those who were usually around him to meet in Galilee. They were those who accompanied him during his ministry, those who believed, those who doubted, and those who walked with him.  Those who shared his daily journey, those who abandoned him in times of danger and death, the common people that Jesus chose. Perhaps some of them went to the encounter with doubts.

            And we today, can we see ourselves in the reflection of these disciples? How has our encounter with the risen Jesus been? Have we approached in faith, with curiosity, out of despair? How we have come is not the important thing; it is what this encounter has produced in our lives.

            When the Gospel was written, the Church was spreading all around and the apostles were giving their witness to the risen Jesus. Our Churches must be risen communities just like Jesus. They must be communities that proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom of God.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, we want always to be with you. May your promise of everlasting companionship never fail. Amen.

Encuentro con Jesús resucitado                                                           Mateo 28:16-20

Por mi parte, yo estaré con ustedes todos los días,

hasta el fin del mundo.

Jesús resucitado convoca a sus amigos, sus hermanos, los de siempre para encontrarse en Galilea. Allí estaban quienes lo acompañaron durante su ministerio, los que creyeron, los que dudaron y anduvieron con él. Aquellos con quienes Jesús compartió el camino diario, los que le abandonaron en momentos de peligro y muerte, las personas comunes que Jesús escogió. Quizás algunos de ellos fueron al encuentro con dudas.

También nosotros y nosotras hoy, podemos vernos en el reflejo de estos discípulos. ¿Cómo ha sido nuestro encuentro con Jesús resucitado? ¿Nos hemos acercado por fe, por curiosidad, por desesperación? Lo más importante no ha sido cómo hemos llegado, sino qué produjo en nuestra vida este encuentro.

Cuando se escribió el Evangelio, la Iglesia se difundía por todas partes y los apóstoles daban su testimonio respecto a Jesús resucitado.

Nuestras iglesias han de ser comunidades resucitadas al igual que Jesús. Han de ser comunidades que anuncien las Buenas Nuevas del reino de Dios.

Oración: Señor Jesús, queremos estar siempre contigo. Que tu promesa de compañía eterna nunca nos falte. Amén.

HIS OWN LOVE FOR US

EZEKIEL 39:23-26

Therefore thus says the Lord GOD:

Now I will restore the fortunes of Jacob,

and have mercy on the whole house of Israel;

and I will be jealous for my holy name.

Ezekiel 39:25 (NRSV)

            Today’s text shows us clearly that God loves us with eternal love. He loves us although we have turned away from him to follow our own paths. Nevertheless, our human and deliberate rebellion creates problems for us. Without doubt, human sin creates an abyss between the human and God.

            It’s no different when someone close to us fails us. A chasm forms between the two and a feeling of distancing is inevitable. Even our limited human sense of justice requires payment for transgressions; in the same manner we shouldn’t expect less from God’s perfect justice. Nevertheless, God’s love is also perfect, so his love of humanity moved him to send Jesus who delivered himself totally for our transgressions. In this way the demands of God’s justice are fulfilled on the cross of Jesus Christ. Jesus didn’t come to earth to live a long life as a famous teacher. He came to give life which is why he could say from the cross before breathing his last, It is finished!  What happened then and three days later forever changed the lives of those who believe.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for your unmerited love. Thank you for your life and resurrection. Give us wisdom and strength to proclaim to others the good news of your love. Amen.

SU PROPIO AMOR POR NOSOTROS

EZEQUIEL 39:23-26

Por tanto, así ha dicho Jehová el Señor: Ahora volveré

En el texto de hoy se nos revela claramente que Dios nos ama con amor eterno. Él nos ama aunque nos hayamos alejado de Él para seguir nuestro propio camino. Sin embargo, nuestra rebeldía humana y deliberada nos crea problemas. Sin dudas, el pecado humano produce un abismo entre el ser humano y Dios.

 No es diferente cuando alguien cercano nos falla. Se forma un abismo entre los dos y la sensación de distanciamiento es inevitable. Hasta nuestro limitado sentido humano de la justicia exige el pago por las transgresiones, de modo que no deberíamos esperar menos de la justicia perfecta de Dios. Sin embargo, el amor de Dios también es perfecto, así que su amor por la humanidad le motivó a enviar a Jesús, el cual se entregó totalmente por nuestras transgresiones. De esta manera, las exigencias de la justicia de Dios se cumplieron en la cruz de Jesucristo. Jesús no vino a la tierra a vivir una vida larga como un maestro afamado. Vino a dar vida, y por eso pudo decir desde la cruz momentos antes de exhalar su último suspiro: ¡Todo ha terminado! Lo que sucedió en ese momento y tres días después cambió para siempre la vida de aquellos que creen.

Oración: Señor, gracias por tu inmerecido amor. Gracias por tu vida y tu resurrección. Danos sabiduría y valor para testificar a otros las buenas nuevas de tu amor. Amén.

YOUR GREATER TREASURE

MATTHEW 6:19-21

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,

where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal;

            It is said that one day a man was walking on the beach at night and in his mind kept repeating: “If I had a car, I would be happy, or if I had a big house, I would be happy, or if I had more money, I would be happy.” At that moment he found a little bag of stones and began throwing them one at a time into the sea all the while saying: “If I had . . .” He did this until he had only one pebble in the bag, which he kept. When he got back to his house, he realized that it was not a stone but a diamond. Can you imagine how many diamonds he threw into the sea without knowing it?

            So it is with us. We spend our time throwing away our precious treasures while waiting for what we think is perfect or dreaming and wishing for what we do not have without valuing what we have close at hand. Let’s look around ourselves and pause to see how fortunate we are. Happiness is very close to us, even though we may not want to realize it.

            Let’s pay attention to the pebbles which may be very valuable diamonds. Each day of our lives is a precious diamond, valuable and irreplaceable, given to us by God. It is up to us to make use of it or to scorn it.        

Prayer: Lord, as we begin this trimester at Easter time, we raise our prayer to you to lead and strengthen us. Bless our life, care for us and help us to understand how blessed we are by you. Amen.

TU MAYOR TESORO

MATEO 6:19-21

No os hagáis tesoros en la tierra, donde la polilla y el orín

corrompen, y donde ladrones minan y hurtan...

Cuentan que una vez un hombre caminaba por la playa de noche y en su mente se repetía: “Si tuviera un auto sería feliz, o si tuviera una casa grande sería feliz, o si tuviera más dinero sería feliz”. En ese momento se encontró con una bolsita de piedras y empezó a tirarlas una por una al mar mientras decía: “Si tuviera…”. Así lo hizo hasta que quedaba una sola piedrecita en la bolsa la cual guardó. Al llegar a su casa se dio cuenta de que no era una piedra, sino un diamante. ¿Te imaginas cuántos diamantes arrojó al mar sin darse cuenta?

Así mismo somos nosotros. Nos pasamos arrojando nuestros preciosos tesoros por estar esperando lo que creemos perfecto o soñando y deseando lo que no tenemos, sin darle valor a lo que tenemos cerca.

Miremos a nuestro alrededor y detengámonos a observar cuán afortunados somos. La felicidad está bien cerca de nosotros, aunque nosotros no queremos darnos cuenta de eso.

Prestémosle atención a las piedritas, que pueden ser diamantes muy valiosos. Cada uno de nuestros días es un diamante precioso, valioso e irremplazable que nos ha regalado Dios. Depende de nosotros aprovecharlo o despreciarlo.

Oración: Señor, comenzando el trimestre y en este tiempo de Pascua, se eleva nuestra oración a ti para que nos guíes y fortalezcas. Bendice nuestra vida, cuídanos y ayúdanos a entender cuán bendecidos somos por ti. Amén.

 So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation:

everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!

Today, in celebrating the Resurrection of our Lord, I sense joy in my heart at sharing this poem, since I feel every day that Christ is alive in us.

Resurrection is existing, living, understanding and listening,

it is being happy and thinking that we can change.

Resurrection is humanizing our being,

it’s blessing new dawns, it’s waking up,

it is to be filled with the fullness of salvation and songs of joy,

it is renewing ourselves day by day and becoming more in the spirit than yesterday.

Resurrection is making progress in our path

toward a better world,

it is truth, reality, the unimaginable,

it is filling the heart with light

so that we can see in the darkness as well.

Resurrection is realizing what is imperfect,

what is idle, and returning good for evil,

it is wrapping reason in lovely foolishness

and recognizing that we are new beings

who have so much to give and so little to keep.

Resurrection is knowing that we can light

solitude with the presence of Jesus,

because Resurrection is to rely on his promise,

to walk in his footsteps, to make straight the crooked paths,

to preach, and touch immensity with Him.

Prayer: Lord, you are the profound source of our hope. Jesus, may we resurrect with you.

Resurrección del Señor/  Pascua

“Resucitar es tocar con El también,

la inmensidad”

2 CORINTIOS 5:11-17

lo antiguo ha pasado, lo nuevo ha llegado.

Hoy, al celebrar la resurrección de nuestro Señor, siento el gozo en mi corazón de compartir este poema, porque cada día siento como Cristo vive en nosotros:

Resurrección es existir, vivir, comprender y escuchar,

es alegrarse y pensar que podemos cambiar.

Resurrección es humanizar nuestro ser,

es bendecir nuevas auroras, es despertar,

es llenarse a plenitud de salvación y cantos de alegría

es renovarnos día a día y crecer en espíritu más que ayer.

Resurrección es adelantar nuestros pasos

hacia un mundo mejor,

es la verdad, lo real, lo inimaginable,

es repletar el corazón de luces

para ver también en la oscuridad.

Resurrección es darnos cuenta de lo imperfecto,

de lo ocioso y devolver bien por mal,

es envolver en adorable locura la razón

y distinguir que somos nuevas criaturas que tenemos

tanto que dar y tan poco que guardar.

Resurrección es saber que podemos alumbrar

con la presencia de Jesús la soledad,

porque resurrección es contar con su promesa,

pisar su huella y andar, enderezar caminos incorrectos,

predicar, y tocar con Él también, la inmensidad.

Introduction

            Our Devotions have been coming to you every day this year and the testimony of many people motivates us, letting us know the blessings received through the meditations, prayers, and Bible readings programmed in this daily practice.

            This trimester begins with the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. God willing, we can extend this devotional time to all the members of our household.  We have the chance to create a wonderful opportunity to find spaces where the family can meet and share the daily experiences of resurrection, thinking and reflecting on the truths expressed in God’s Word. The times in which we live demand from us a huge load of energy and strength. Many times, our tensions and problems are greater than our own strength. Let’s give importance to family devotions.

Nuestro Devocionario ha estado llegando a ustedes durante todos los días del presente año, y nos estimula el testimonio de muchas personas, haciéndonos saber las bendiciones recibidas a través de las meditaciones, oraciones y lecturas bíblicas programadas en esta práctica diaria.

  Este trimestre está comenzando con la celebración de la Resurrección de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Ojalá logremos extender este tiempo devocional a todos los miembros del hogar. Podemos crear una magnífica oportunidad para encontrar espacios donde la familia pueda reunirse y compartir las experiencias cotidianas de resurrección, pensando y reflexionando sobre las verdades expresadas en la Palabra de Dios. Los tiempos en que vivimos demandan una carga enorme de nosotros de energía y esfuerzo. Las tensiones y problemas resultan muchas veces superiores a nuestras fuerzas. ¡Brindemos importancia al devocional familiar!
