Sunday, October 27 HUMBLE OF HEART LUKE 18: 9-14

Sunday, October 27
                         HUMBLE OF HEART
                                        LUKE 18: 9-14

For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled,
and those who humble themselves will be exalted
                                                                                  Luke 18:14b (NIV)
Often in our life we will meet with people who make us feel uncomfortable. How unpleasant it is, for example, to meet with a pretentious person who thinks he knows it all, relying on his accomplishments, minimizing the efforts of others and boasting of his achievements.
Just the opposite occurs with the humble person, because with her you feel accepted, she listens to you and understands you. The humble person does not boast of her accomplishments or gifts, nor does she need to hide her failures and weaknesses, and acts sincerely and naturally.
Juan Armando Corbín (an Argentine psychologist) said: “This virtue, together with honesty, which is the capacity to be sincere with oneself and with others, makes us become people worthy of confidence and respect.” Who would not like to be surrounded by people like that? Jesus Christ invites us to be humble of heart. Humility is a spiritual gift. Let us cultivate it!

Prayer: Lord, help us to be humble of heart, so that everything we do may be for your glory and honor. Amen.

                                 HUMILDES DE CORAZÓN
                                   LUCAS 18: 9-14

Saturday, October 26 I WILL NOT FEAR PSALM 23: 1-6

Saturday, October 26
I WILL NOT FEAR
 PSALM 23: 1-6

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil,
for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Psalm 23: 4 (NIV)
There’s a Chinese proverb that says: “He who is afraid of suffering is already suffering from fear.”
We have all felt fear at some time. Fear is a sensation of warning and anxiety for the presence of a danger or problem, be it real or imagined: fear of dying, failure, and so many fears of frustrations and problems, to make a blunder, the list of possibilities is endless…
I have experienced the fear of undergoing seven surgical procedures, twice on the verge of death, but as a Christian I prayed to God before going in the operating room, using this Psalm.
Like the author of this Psalm, I am certain that my God and Lord is with me and cares for me like a shepherd. David knew well the role of a shepherd, and in his times of weakness and fear he could experience something like the protection and care he offered his flock.
When afraid let us say like the Psalmist: I will fear no evil.
Prayer: Our Father, thank you because we can trust in your presence when we are afraid. Amen

NO TEMERE
 SALMO 23: 1-6

Friday, October 25 Celebration of the “El Fuerte” IPR (Cárdenas) I WANT TO SEE YOU LORD JOHN 9: 35-41

Celebration of the “El Fuerte” IPR (Cárdenas)

I WANT TO SEE YOU LORD
JOHN  9: 35-41

Are we blind too?
 John. 9: 40b (NIV)

A few days ago someone told me she was very worried because her plans were not working out as she expected; she didn’t understand why God was not answering her prayers if she had fervently prayed for her needs.

We often see God in this way, as somebody on the telephone responding immediately to every call, “because his love is so immense he is at our beck and call.” God loves us, God listens to us, but God wants us to overcome our blindness by teaching us patience and faith. Doubts paralyze action and rob us of joy. Faith is a spiritual gift that gives certainty to things that are not seen.

We cannot be like the Pharisees who adapted their faith to suit themselves. Our God is true and unchanging, and is not indifferent to our prayers. God always listens to his people, and responds in his own time. We cannot put conditions on God. We must be patient and in communion with Him, although he does not answer our prayers as we expect.

Prayer: Good God, thank you for the gift of faith. May we be patient and not blind to your presence.  Thank you because even when we ignore you, you are with us. Amen.

QUIERO VERTE SEÑOR
JUAN  9: 35-41

¿Acaso también nosotros somos ciegos?
 Juan. 9: 40b

A Dios no podemos ponerle condiciones.

Thursday, October 24 Anniversary of the “Good Shepherd” IPR (Unión de Reyes) FIRM IN YOUR LOVE PSALM 1: 1-4; 6

Thursday, October 24
Anniversary of the “Good Shepherd” IPR (Unión de Reyes)

                                         FIRM IN YOUR LOVE
                                          PSALM 1: 1-4;  6

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.
Psalm 1:6 (NIV)

When Rev. Ernesto Núñez Govea was my pastor, we often sang the hymn “When we walk with God.” He loved the refrain: Obey, follow your duty. If you want to be happy, you must obey. And after singing it he always stressed faithful observance of the ten commandments.
Now the times have changed, and there is more open communication with parents, pastors, and even with friends. But that doesn’t mean that we should confuse the freedom that God gives us with licentiousness, in a diverse world filled with temptations. We must still carry out our duty as Christians in order to be truly happy.
We must be God’s faithful disciples and live a life at his service. In this way we will discover how God’s Word prepares us to live according to his commandments.
Prayer: Oh God, enable us to be obedient followers of your law so that peace and order can reign in our lives and in the world. Amen.

Aniversario de  la IPR “El Buen Pastor” (Unión de Reyes)

                                         FIRMES EN TU AMOR
                                          SALMO  1: 1-4;  6

Wednesday, October 23 ARE WE READY? LUKE 12: 39-48

Wednesday, October 23
ARE WE READY?
LUKE 12: 39-48

The Lord replied, “Who are the faithful and wise managers whom the master will put in charge of his household servants, to give them their food at the proper time?  Happy are the servants whom the master finds fulfilling their responsibilities when he comes.”
                                                    Luke 12:42-43 (CEB)

A few days ago, I spoke with a sister in the faith who is very dear to me.  She commented to me that she had to remove herself from the midst of the rancor that was around her due to a discussion in which she had been mistreated.  Her words were: “I need to rid myself of this because if the Lord comes now, he will find me weighed down and I have to be ready to travel lightly.”  This made me think about the conditions in which we find ourselves to receive the Lord, who can arrive at any moment.

The parable of the two servants teaches us that we should be working when the Lord comes.  Many believe that the Lord will come soon, and for this, they wait peacefully in place of working.  Although we do not know a fixed date for his return, at the least we should be always prepared for this moment.

And like the young mother prepares to receive her baby, gathering things in the hopes that her little one will use them, thus we should gather good works so that one day, when the moment arrives, we will be able to place them at the Lord’s feet.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, prepare our minds and hearts so that we will be prepared when you return.  Allow our lives and our works to speak for us.  Amen.

¿ESTAMOS PREPARADOS?
LUCAS 12: 39-48

Tuesday, October 22 OUR LIT LAMPS LUKE 12:35-38

Tuesday, October 22
OUR LIT LAMPS
LUKE 12:35-38

Be dressed for service and keep your lamps lit.
Luke 12:35 (CEB)

Waiting always has been something that makes me anxious and impatient.  I am among the people who look for rapid answers and results.  Nevertheless, to reach any goal in life we must prepare ourselves and many times we must wait.  The suggested text for the meditation for today is an invitation from Jesus to be vigilant, attentive to the signs of God.  Although we only see scarcity of food and medicine or a lack of hope, God asks us to maintain our lamps lit.  This means that we should live waiting for this love of God that we freely receive, a love that we experience in each gesture of solidarity, in each word of life that we find in God’s Word, in each testimony of faith that helps us continue in the path, in each daily sign of the divine presence in the family, in the community, or in the neighborhood.

Let us not put out the light of faith and hope. Let us not live as if we are asleep, without strength, without dreams, without yearnings.  In the end, may we be like this vigilant servant, waiting for the arrival of God to our lives, to serve God, love God and to sit at God’s full table of salvation.

Prayer: Our God, help us to keep the lights of faith and love lit in our lives, that we may live always expecting to recognize your voice when you call at our door. In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

NUESTRAS LÁMPARAS ENCENDIDAS
LUCAS 12:35-38

Tened vuestra cintura ceñida y vuestras lámparas encendidas
Lucas 12:35

Monday, October 21 THE SIN OF INSENSITIVITY LUKE 12:13-21

Monday, October 21
THE SIN OF INSENSITIVITY
LUKE 12:13-21
Then Jesus said to them, “Watch out!  Guard yourself against all kinds of greed.
After all, one’s life isn’t determined by one’s possessions, even when someone is very wealthy.
Luke 12:15 (CEB)

One of the most challenging moments of the week is the time that I dedicate to review with my daughter and her friends from school is a type of “case study”.  It is a special moment because I can verify their learning and it helps them to create good study habits.  I confess that I develop great empathy with their teacher who each day has 30 students in the classroom with different characteristics and family backgrounds.  One of the moments that gives me the most anxiety and concern is when I explain a lesson and I feel that my students are not paying attention.

This also must have been how Jesus felt with his disciples, according to this passage.  The master dedicated a great part of his time to teach about values such as unity, reconciliation, trusting in God, coherence; expecting that his followers would understand the need to treasure the truly important: a committed spirituality, a life of service to God and to our neighbor.  Nevertheless, some of those who were at his side did not understand.  They could not understand because they did not listen to him, they had their senses focused on other priorities: their own welfare, their interests, their issues.  This is the insensitivity that Jesus talks about:  centering ourselves in our own well-being and security, securing our lives with the idols of power, money, and status.  Without a doubt, these treasures are “vanity of vanities”.  We do not commit the sin of insensitivity wanting to “gain our life”, but that is how we lose it.  Better to lose our life for Christ and we will feel rich toward God.

Prayer: Our God, allow us to be attentive to your message so that our discipleship will be coherent.  Help us to not center ourselves on the vain and perishable, but to embrace a faith that guides us to service and the genuine love that helps us to live a full life.  Amen.

EL PECADO DE LA INSENSATEZ
LUCAS 12:13-21
