THE SIN OF INSENSITIVITY

LUKE 12:13-21

Then Jesus said to them, “Watch out!  Guard yourself against all kinds of greed.  

After all, one’s life isn’t determined by one’s possessions, even when someone is very wealthy.

One of the most challenging moments of the week is the time that I dedicate to review with my daughter and her friends from school is a type of “case study”.  It is a special moment because I can verify their learning and it helps them to create good study habits.  I confess that I develop great empathy with their teacher who each day has 30 students in the classroom with different characteristics and family backgrounds.  One of the moments that gives me the most anxiety and concern is when I explain a lesson and I feel that my students are not paying attention. 

This also must have been how Jesus felt with his disciples, according to this passage.  The master dedicated a great part of his time to teach about values such as unity, reconciliation, trusting in God, coherence; expecting that his followers would understand the need to treasure the truly important: a committed spirituality, a life of service to God and to our neighbor.  Nevertheless, some of those who were at his side did not understand.  They could not understand because they did not listen to him, they had their senses focused on other priorities: their own welfare, their interests, their issues.  This is the insensitivity that Jesus talks about:  centering ourselves in our own well-being and security, securing our lives with the idols of power, money, and status.  Without a doubt, these treasures are “vanity of vanities”.  We do not commit the sin of insensitivity wanting to “gain our life”, but that is how we lose it.  Better to lose our life for Christ and we will feel rich toward God. 

Prayer: Our God, allow us to be attentive to your message so that our discipleship will be coherent.  Help us to not center ourselves on the vain and perishable, but to embrace a faith that guides us to service and the genuine love that helps us to live a full life.  Amen.   

EL PECADO DE LA INSENSATEZ

LUCAS 12:13-21

También les dijo: Manténganse atentos y cuídense de toda avaricia,

porque la vida del hombre no depende de los muchos bienes que posea

Uno de los momentos más retadores de la semana, es el que dedico a repasar a mi hija y sus amigas de la escuela en una especie de “casa de estudio”. Es un momento especial porque puedo verificar el aprendizaje de ellas, así como ayudarles a crear el hábito de estudio. Confieso que puedo crear gran empatía con su maestra que cada día tiene treinta estudiantes en el aula con diferentes características y trasfondos familiares. Uno de los momentos que me produce mayor ansiedad y molestia es cuando explico un contenido y siento que mis alumnas no me prestan atención.

Algo así debe haber sentido Jesús con sus discípulos, según este pasaje. El maestro dedicaba gran parte de su tiempo a enseñar acerca de valores como la unidad, la reconciliación, la confianza en Dios, la coherencia; tratando así de que sus seguidores comprendieran la necesidad de atesorar lo verdaderamente importante: una espiritualidad comprometida, una vida de servicio a Dios y al prójimo. Sin embargo, algunos de los que estaban a su lado no entendían. No podían entender porque no le escuchaban, tenían sus sentidos atentos a otras prioridades: sus bienes, sus intereses, sus asuntos. Esta es la insensatez de la que habla Jesús: centrarnos en nuestro propio bienestar y seguridad, asegurar nuestras vidas con los ídolos del poder, dinero, status. Sin dudas esos tesoros son “vanidad de vanidades” No cometamos el pecado de la insensatez queriendo “ganar nuestra vida”, pues así la perderemos. Más bien perdamos la vida por Cristo y nos sentiremos ricos para con Dios.

Oración: Dios nuestro, permite que estemos atentos a tu mensaje para que nuestro discipulado sea coherente. Ayúdanos a no centrarnos en lo vano y perecedero, y abrazar una fe que nos lance al servicio, al amor genuino que nos hace vivir la vida a plenitud. Amén.
