Celebration of the Mission Church in Paredes
A LIVING SACRIFICE
I CORINTHIANS 9: 19-23

I appeal to you, therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

Romans 12:1 (NRSV)

Among the ritual practices in the Temple in Jerusalem, the daily sacrifice of animals was unavoidable. Somehow, for many it was a way to keep God propitious, to gain God’s favor. When someone violated the Law, he then had to present an animal for sacrifice, assuming that somehow his sin was settled with the death of the victim at the altar of burnt offerings.

According to Paul, the true “sacrifice” occurs every day and in all circumstances. The apostle knows what this type of surrender has meant to him personally, as a living offering. His humble and incarnate attitude, following the example of Jesus Christ led him to a ministry that reached many in various places.

How do we make the mandate to present ourselves as a living sacrifice a reality? Consider these possibilities:

We should always put others in first place.
We should think about the teachings of the Bible before we act.
We should consider whether everything we do gives glory to God.

Prayer: Lord, we want to give you our lives as an offering that pays tribute to your name. Train us for this mission. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

UN SACRIFICIO VIVO
I COR. 9: 19-23

Friday, March 13 RENEWAL ROMANS 12: 2-4

Friday, March 13
RENEWAL
ROMANS 12: 2-4

So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away,
our inner nature is being renewed day by day.

II Corinthians 4: 16 (NRSV)

Everything tends to wear out, languish, and become extinct. The firmest solid basalt rocks are broken by assault of the sea’s waves, and they leave their traces in the thin sand of the beaches.

On the spiritual plane Paul speaks of a different reality: our body wears away, the law of life and nature is real and is fulfilled in us as well, but it does not necessarily happen in our soul. Deep in our being we can experience a continuous renewal that brings new forces and hopes.

Along with the prophet Isaiah we can say that those who hope in God will have a new vigor, wings like eagles, strength without tiring for the race. God renews us always, if we allow it. We must have faith in God’s ability as an adept potter to shape our lives in his hands.

Prayer: Make us fit vessels for your use. May we feel your transforming power renewing our lives for your glory in the name of Jesus. Amen.

RENOVACIÓN
ROMANOS 12: 2-4

THE LORD STRENGTHENS
PSALM 27: 1-5

But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed, and all the Gentiles might hear it.

II Timothy 4:17 (NRSV)

There are times when our forces seem to falter; difficult circumstances overwhelm us and everything seems so unbearable that sometimes we just want to give up any effort, abandon the fight, and die. That is not a situation that only we in the modern world experience; stories that reflect this reality exist in every age.

Think about the apostle Paul, overwhelmed by Jewish persecution, lack of resources, abandonment and betrayal by some of his close collaborators; yet he can testify to Timothy that the Lord helped and gave him strength.

It is a condition of human life that we are caught up in difficulties of various kinds; today we are experiencing situations of shortages of food, medicines, transport. How overwhelmed we are by such circumstances! And what is there to do? If we can manage to go to Jesus with this burden, confide in him our difficulties and sorrows and learn to rest in Him, then, along with so many believers of every time, we will recognize that the Lord strengthens, and our mouths will be able to proclaim praise.

Prayer: Lord, we turn to you in search of strength. May we do as the prophet Nahum and still declare that you are strength on the day of anguish. Amen.

EL SEÑOR FORTALECE
SALMO 27: 1-5

Wednesday, March 11 LET US RUN WITH PATIENCE HEBREWS 12: 1-2

Wednesday, March 11
LET US RUN WITH PATIENCE
HEBREWS 12: 1-2

Do you not know that in a race the runners all compete, but only one receives the prize?
Run in such a way that you may win it.

I Corinthians 9:24 (NRSV)

Running with ‘patience’ is a bit of a paradox for us. Isn’t running synonymous with speed?  Running slowly, in ‘slow motion’ doesn't seem to make sense.  But what it’s all about is perseverance and calculating our strength. Some have therefore compared the Christian life to a marathon. Unlike the so-called “speed” races, in which the runners go out on the track like cars, in those of great distances a gathering of energy, will and strength is needed, which allows the runner to reach the finish line in good standing.

The way of faith is replete with witnesses’ histories that have been able to carry the gospel and its testimony worthily. They are an example of better encouragement for us today in our pilgrimage of faith: Support the rest; nobody wins a solitary prize; it is a sharing of strengths and hopes. In a world as individualized as ours is today, let us ponder our challenge to give witness to God’s grace.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the cloud of witnesses that have gone before us and served as an inspiration and support. Train us so that our faith will keep that same sense of commitment alive. Amen.

CORRAMOS CON PACIENCIA
HEB 12: 1-2
I Co. 9:24

Tuesday, March 10 WE NEED ONE ANOTHER JAMES 5:13-16

Tuesday, March 10
WE NEED ONE ANOTHER
JAMES 5:13-16

Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask,
it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.

Matthew 18:19 (NRSV)

In the church, the image of the body that Paul presented in some of his letters should always be kept in mind. The body, as an organism, is interdependent with its organs and parts as a whole: The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” (I Cor. 12:21) We need one another.

The text from James sets us in an ancient practice where the whole Church is united in attending upon and helping others, sharing both with those who are happy and those who are suffering, bringing relief to the sick and rejoicing with those who are celebrating, interceding together and also confessing our offenses. Certainly, all that the Church brings in prayer to God in intercessory communion is heard, and God works for God’s own; to that we have many witnesses.

Unfortunately, at times we allow differences and other questions of lesser importance to raise barriers for us that hinder true communion, and our prayer is ineffective in such situations. Let’s remember that we need one another. Always.

Prayer: Lord, help us to live lives which give witness to our acting in unity, like your Body.  May we always be aware of the need for mutual support. Amen.

NECESITAMOS
SANTIAGO 5:13-16

Monday, March 9 LOSSES MATTHEW 6: 25-32

Monday, March 9
LOSSES
MATTHEW 6: 25-32

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters,
about those who have died, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope

I Thessalonians 4:13 (NRSV)

Several years ago, in an important turning point in Psychology, a conclusion of some research in Cuba on the causes of stress came to light. The authors stated that what caused most stress was “the loss of the beloved object.”  Curious, isn’t it? One might think that other pressing things, such as the daily problems of various kinds of material shortages, would be what causes the most stress to the population.

Losing what one loves becomes a source of stress. It might be a loved one, but it could also be some material matter. There are people who cling to their possessions and suffer terribly when such a loss occurs. What is certain is that as humans we accustom ourselves to what we possess, and losing them generates a state of anxiety, of sadness, of impotence, or insecurity.

Amid our lacks and losses, we must trust that God is the one who provides and supplies our needs. In the saddest of cases, when we lose a cherished one, we must have faith that death is not the end, but rather a new stage of our journey with God.

Prayer: In the midst of our anxieties about the things that we lose, for those we love and who are not with us anymore, help us to remember that you, Lord, care for us and that our lives belong to you. Amen.

PERDIDAS
MATEO 6: 25-32
I Tesalonicenses 4:13

Sunday, March 8 Women’s Day THE “ALL” IN A MANDATE ROMANS 10: 8-15

Sunday, March 8
Women’s Day
THE “ALL” IN A MANDATE
ROMANS 10: 8-15

Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation.

Mark 16:15 (NRSV)

Some people, after defining experiences in the life of faith, express their intention to preach the gospel outside Cuba, to go out to other countries, from Africa to Asia, countries with disadvantages, to help people know God and come to faith as a resource of hope and salvation.
I certainly believe that, as Christians, we should feel moved to speak to others about God in the face of dramatic realities or the many instances of hopelessness in the modern world. But, at the same time, we have a lot of people around us, neighbors, friends, family, for whom it is also necessary to hear about divine love and consolation. It isn’t necessary to travel thousands of kilometers to preach, nor is it necessary to stick only with those in extreme situations.
That’s why Jesus teaches us something else.  His final command has a more comprehensive component: to go into all the world and preach to every creature.  We must always announce and live the good news, that is the mandate.
May God call us to be light anywhere and with anyone; may God allow us to share with love the wonderful gift we have.
Prayer: Father, use us in the task of delivering your message to others. Amen.

Día de la Mujer

LOS “TODOS” DE UN MANDATO
ROMANOS 10: 8-15
