Saturday, January 18- Week of Prayer for Unity Among Christians

IS CHRIST DIVIDED?
1 CORINTHIANS 1:1-17
“I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought.”
1 Corinthians 1:10
The wide diversity of Christian churches leads us to reflect upon Paul’s question to the Corinthians: “Is Christ divided?” With faith, we reply: “No!” and yet our communities continue to harbor scandalous divisions. Paul directs harsh words to the Corinthians for the way in which they have distorted the Gospel and have broken the unity of the community. “I follow Paul”; “I follow Apollo”; “I follow Peter”. Neither does Paul praise those who consider Christ as their leader, because they were using his name in order to distinguish themselves from the rest of the Christian community. We cannot invoke the name of Christ in order to put up walls around ourselves. Our unity, life, and salvation come from Christ, even though we may participate in one group or another, and our local churches nourish our faith and help us to walk as disciples of Jesus.  Paul challenges us to ask ourselves if we harbor division even in Christ’s name, “emptying the cross of its power,” or if we share the good news of Jesus Christ.

Prayer: God of goodness, awaken in us a feeling of responsibility to maintain the unity of your Church and the untiring desire to work towards reconciliation.

“Yo pertenezco a Pablo, yo a Apolo, yo a Pedro”.

Friday, January 17- REPAYING OFFENSE WITH LOVE

1 PETER 3: 8-17
“A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense.”
Proverbs 19:11
These verses bring to mind the story of an old Samurai who taught Zen Buddhism to his young followers. On a certain occasion a warrior known for using unscrupulous tactics in order to beat his opponents challenged the old Samurai in a public square.  In front of many onlookers, the warrior threw all sorts of insults at him in order to disarm and thus be able to defeat him.  The old man remained impassive and the young man had to back down in humiliation.  Later on, his disciples questioned their teacher’s supposed cowardice in allowing himself to be publicly insulted. With great wisdom the elderly man replied: “If someone approaches you with a gift and you do not receive it, to whom does the gift belong?”  “To the person who offered it,” replied one of his disciples.  “The same thing applies to envy, rage and insults:  when they are not accepted, they continue to belong to those who carry them upon themselves.”

Prayer: God of mercy, allow our hearts to be free of anger and resentfulness toward those who offend us. We ask that our lips may express only words of blessing.  Amen.

OFENSA CON AMOR SE PAGA
1 PEDRO 3: 8-17
“El buen juicio hace al hombre paciente;

Thursday, January 16- LET US SEEK WISDOM

PROVERBS 3:1-6
“In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Proverbs 3:6
What a delight it is to know that, on no matter what path we find ourselves, even those strewn with stumbling blocks, God will make our paths straight!
Our entire lives can be plagued by fear and anxiety.  There are many times when I’ve been in situations for which I could find no explanation, during which I suffered deep disappointment, perhaps for having placed too much trust in another person. After days and nights filled with sleeplessness, however, the Lord has always given me the strength that I requested.
I have come to understand that when life’s storms intensify, we can nevertheless fearlessly anchor ourselves to that safe haven which is Christ.
We should always ask God to allow us the privilege to hear his voice as a soft and gentle whisper.

Prayer:  Lord, may we be able to recognize you in our pathways, and may you always be our faith’s anchor.  Amen.

 ALCANCEMOS SABIDURÍA
PROVERBIOS 3:1-6
“Reconócelo en todos tus caminos,
y él enderezará tus veredas”
Proverbios 3:6

Wednesday, January 15- HANDS READY FOR WORK

MARK 10:13-16
“And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.”
Mark 10:16

As a young boy I used to listen to my grandmother singing the hymn “Caring Hands,” from which I still recall this beautiful verse: “hands that always knew how to calm all pain, the divine hands of my redeemer, the hands that multiplied the fish and the bread, miraculous hands that give life.” This beautiful song makes me think about our discipleship. As Jesus used his hands to serve, to bless, to heal and to feed, today we should extend our hands to do good and to accomplish the calling that God has given us to build his Kingdom.
Today we too need hands that are ready to work and help those who are in need.  In our work at home, and outside the home, and at church, we have the opportunity to keep our hands busy in his service.
Prayer: Lord, help us to place aside our laziness so that we may occupy our hands in service to the Church and to the world. Amen.

MANOS DISPUESTAS A TRABAJAR
MARCOS 10:13-16

Tuesday, January 14- Anniversary of the Church in La Fernanda NEVER AGAIN ALONE

Tuesday, January 14

Anniversary of the Church in La Fernanda
NEVER AGAIN ALONE
JOHN 3:16-21
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
John 3:16

I have a co-worker whose husband is a merchant marine. Each time he returns from a long trip, it is interesting to hear about his experiences on his journey and the details of the cities he visited, but he always insists that he experienced terrible loneliness during those many months away from his family. How often we feel alone in life!  On many occasions, even with my feet firmly planted on the ground and without navigating through lonely oceans, we have felt alone.  Jesus Christ also felt lonesome, when he prayed alone in Gethsemane, when he stood alone before Pontius Pilate, when he was taken alone to Calvary; but in the midst of so much solitude, that cry was heard: “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”  The humanization of the Son of God offers the certainty that we shall never again be alone.  Someone is with us; with utmost confidence, there is hope for those who are sure of his promises. By our side marches someone, unseen by our eyes but with the conviction in our hearts that we do not walk alone.

Prayer: Thank you, Jesus, for always being by our side.  Amen.

Aniversario de la Iglesia  en La Fernanda
NUNCA MÁS SOLOS
JUAN 3:16-21

Monday, January 13- WITH GOD WE WILL SEE THE LIGHT

Monday, January 13
WITH GOD WE WILL SEE THE LIGHT
MATTHEW 19:16-30
“Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
Matthew 19:26
On various occasions we have seen people who have been suffering for years from their illness, and who suffer even more because they have no hope of recovering their health.  This situation is comparable to finding ourselves in a large tunnel from which it is difficult for us to find an exit.
Our life is a tunnel; although at certain times we cannot see our way out, after a time we see [the proverbial] light…and ultimately we are able to exit the tunnel.
We may feel discouraged and sad; it may seem that our problems have no solution.  But when we look towards Christ and feel his presence, we discover that a shining light may guide us each day until we reach the end of the tunnel. If we persevere in our faith in God, in the end, after difficult hours, He will lead us to his glory and light.

Prayer: Lord, we know that there are difficulties in our lives, but in You we find salvation.  Show us your light [and…] this day.  Amen.

CON DIOS VEREMOS LA LUZ
MATEO 19:16-30

Sunday, January 12- The Lord’s Baptism: A New Birth

Sunday, January 12
The Lord’s Baptism
 A NEW BIRTH
MATTHEW 3:13-17
“And the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
Isaiah 53:6b
The feast of the baptism of Jesus marks the close of the period from Christmas to the Epiphany, during which we celebrate the incarnation of God and his manifestation in Christ.  In the episode at the River Jordan, the voice of the Father is heard proclaiming that Jesus is His beloved son.  The baptism of Jesus signaled his recognition as the one sent by the Father to announce the good news of the kingdom of God. It was also the manifestation of his divine relationship, the beginning of his public ministry, the proclamation of a new loyalty, a new love, and a new law.  This date is a good occasion to remember our own baptism.  Those of us who have been baptized should show that we are sons and daughters of God in all circumstances. We have been anointed with a new spirit in order that we may live a life of light in the midst of darkness, fighting against the establishments of injustice, tirelessly seeking universal brotherhood, and building the future of a new history.  Through our baptism we give public testimony to a new birth, in which we have become faithful followers of Jesus.

Prayer: Holy God, help those of us who have been baptized in your name to never depart from you. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
