TUESDAY, APRIL 15

PETER, A GREAT LESSON

MATTHEW 16:13-20

“Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”

John 13:38

These words which were spoken to Peter by the Lord contain great sadness. He knew that Peter would not only try to escape from possible death or from possible punishment, but that he would also end up denying that he was a disciple, the same disciple who had previously confessed: “You are the Christ, the living Son of God.”

There are many ways in which to deny Jesus today: when we shut our ears to the clamor of the people, when our eyes are shut to the reality in which we live, when our mouths do not declare prophetic messages, when we only extend our hands to signal, judge or to monopolize, when our feet are detained and dare not tread firmly forward in the midst of our present challenges…Throughout the course of this week, let us meditate upon how it is possible for us to acknowledge Christ in church on Sunday,  while denying him at any other moment of our lives.  Let us learn this great lesson and confess God in word and deed.

Prayer: God of love, may our lives respond to the teaching of Christ Jesus. Amen.

PEDRO, UNA GRAN LECCIÓN

MATEO 16:13-20

“Antes que el gallo cante, me negarás tres veces”

Juan 13:38

Estas palabras que le fueron dichas a Pedro por su Señor, encierran una gran tristeza. Él sabía que no sólo Pedro trataría de huir de una posible muerte o de un posible castigo, sino que llegaría a negar que era discípulo, el mismo discípulo que con anterioridad había confesado: “Tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo del Dios viviente”.

Hay muchas maneras de negar hoy a Jesús: cuando nuestros oídos están cerrados al clamor del pueblo, cuando nuestros ojos están cerrados a la realidad que vivimos, cuando nuestras bocas no proclaman mensajes proféticos, cuando nuestras manos solo se extienden para señalar, juzgar o acaparar, cuando nuestros pies están detenidos y no se atreven a dar pasos firmes en medio de los retos presentes… Meditemos durante el transcurso de la semana en que pudiéramos estar reconociendo a Cristo el domingo en el templo, pero negándolo en cada momento de nuestras vidas. Aprendamos esta gran lección y confesemos a Dios en palabra y obra.

Oración: Dios de amor, que nuestras vidas respondan a la enseñanza de Cristo Jesús, Amén.

LIFE’S CROSS

MATTHEW 16:21-28

“… and take up his cross and follow me…”

Matthew 16:24

The sun’s brilliance becomes more intense as we distance ourselves from that time of dreams and fantasies that is youth. Christ’s cross is not made of flowers, or of gold. It is the cross that reminds us of what the crucified had to face.  It reminds us of Peter, Paul, James, Andrew Philip, Stephen, and other men and women whose human suffering did not separate them from the Lord. The cross is an invitation to assume life’s challenges, supported constantly by the hand of God. The cross is also an invitation to commitment and faithfulness towards him who will never abandon us. Let us therefore follow the course of the cross that Jesus traced for us, by doing good works and loving others.

On a daily basis we suffer pain, death, injury, privation, needs, threats and illness, but nothing can separate us from the path of God, which alone leads us to salvation.

Prayer: Merciful God, allow the death of Jesus to help us to reflect upon his sacrifice for humanity and on our commitment to your reign of justice. Amen.

CRUZ DE VIDA

MATEO 16:21-28

“… y tome su cruz y sígame…”

El brillo de la cruz va siendo más intenso y atrayente a medida que nos vamos alejando de esa edad de sueños y fantasías que es la juventud. La cruz de Cristo no es de flores, no es de oro. Es la cruz que nos recuerda lo que enfrentaron los crucificados. Nos recuerda a Pedro, Pablo, Santiago, Andrés Felipe, Esteban, y otros hombres y mujeres a quienes el sufrimiento humano no apartó del Señor.

La cruz es una invitación a asumir los retos de la vida siempre asidos de la mano de Dios. También la cruz nos invita al compromiso y la fidelidad hacia aquel que nunca nos desamparará. Recorramos pues el camino de la cruz que Jesús nos trazó, practicando el bien y amando al prójimo.

Cotidianamente sufrimos dolores, muertes, injurias, privaciones, necesidades, amenazas, enfermedades, pero nada nos puede apartar ya del camino de Dios, que es el único que nos conduce a la salvación.

Oración: Dios misericordioso, permite que la muerte de Jesús sirva para reflexionar sobre su sacrificio para la humanidad y nuestro compromiso con tu reino de justicia. Amén.

WHAT TRIUMPH?!

MATTHEW 21:1-11

“…Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.”

Philippians 2:6-7

Palm Sunday is still known to us as “the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem.” Perhaps the biblical passage itself contributes to this perception: “Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, ‘Hosanna!  Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’”  It is true that the boisterous reception would have a disappointing ending. So, what kind of triumph do we mean?  We mean the triumph of humility and meekness.  The king who arrives seated on a donkey is not impressed by the superficial and hypocritical applause of the fanatical multitudes.  On the contrary, he wants us to receive him by devoting our lives to him. Let us open the doors of our hearts to a King who gives up the badges of prestige and of despotic power in order to make himself ‘obedient’ to a plan which will lead him to death on the cross.

Prayer: Faithful God, help me today to give a repentant heart to Jesus Christ.  Help me to participate in his glorious resurrection. Amen.

¿¡QUÉ TRIUNFO!?

MATEO 21:1-11

“Aunque Cristo siempre fue igual a Dios, no insistió en esa igualdad… renunció a esa igualdad, y se hizo igual

a nosotros, haciéndose esclavo de todos”

Filipenses 2:6-7

Aún conocemos el Domingo de Ramos como la “entrada triunfal de Jesús en Jerusalén”. Quizá el propio texto contribuye a que tengamos esa percepción: “muchas personas empezaron a extender sus mantos en el camino…”, “otros cortaron ramas de árboles y también las pusieron como alfombra en el suelo”, “la gente gritaba: ¡Bendito tú, que vienes en el nombre de Dios!”. Cierto es que todo aquel recibimiento bullicioso, concluirá en un final decepcionante. Entonces, ¿de qué triunfo hablamos? Estamos ante el triunfo de la humildad y de la mansedumbre. El rey que viene hoy montado en un burro no agradece los aplausos superficiales e hipócritas de multitudes fanáticas, sino quiere que le recibamos entregándole nuestra vida. Abramos las puertas de nuestro corazón a un Rey que se despoja de las insignias del prestigio y del poder despótico para hacerse “obediente” a un proyecto que lo conducirá a la muerte en la cruz.

Oración: Dios fiel, concédeme que yo pueda entregarle hoy a Jesucristo un corazón arrepentido. Ayúdame a participar de su resurrección gloriosa. Amén.

BE JOYFUL, YOUNG PERSON

ECCLESIASTES 11:9-10

“Better a poor but wise youth than an old but foolish king who no longer knows how to take warning.”

Ecclesiastes  4:13

Youth is a stage in life which creates nostalgia and yearning in everyone. We young people are impetuous and dreamers, and more open to accepting differences; but it is also very true that when these virtues are not well-purposed, we commit errors, with grave consequences for our lives. There are young people who confuse their goals with the zealous search for instant and deceiving gratification, which leads to the abuse of sex, drugs, and alcohol, to unfaithfulness or to a relaxed sense of duty and responsibility.

The Preacher counsels us to be joyful when we are still young, but warns us about the dangers of excess. Not all youth, nor all adults, behave in the same manner. There are many young people who show that the best things in the world are in their good hands, and whose dreams contain the better part of the hopes of humanity. In the Christian life, faith cannot be lived without the full communion between believers of all ages. We young people need to be considerate and respectful and to be willing to dialogue and collaborate with people of other ages, as we together build the Kingdom of God.  

Prayer: Youthful God, renew in me a youthful and joyful spirit, so that my life may be pleasing to your eyes. Amen.

ALÉGRATE, JOVEN

ECLESIASTÉS  11:9-10

“Si tengo que elegir, prefiero al joven…, que al rey viejo

pero tonto que no deja que nadie lo aconseje”

Eclesiastés 4:13

La juventud es una etapa de la vida añorada por todos. Los jóvenes somos impetuosos y soñadores, somos más abiertos para aceptar las diferencias; pero también es muy cierto que cuando esas virtudes no están bien orientadas cometemos errores, con graves consecuencias para nuestra vida. Hay jóvenes que confunden su realización con la búsqueda afanosa del placer momentáneo y engañoso que producen el sexo, las drogas, el alcohol, la infidelidad o un relajado sentido del deber y la responsabilidad. 

El Predicador aconseja alegrarse cuando aún somos jóvenes, pero nos advierte sobre el peligro de los excesos. No todos los jóvenes, al igual que los adultos, se comportan de la misma manera.  Hay muchos jóvenes que demuestran que lo mejor para el mundo está en sus manos, que en sus sueños se concretan una buena parte de las esperanzas de la humanidad. En la vida cristiana, no puede vivirse la fe sin la comunión plena entre los creyentes de todas las edades. Los jóvenes necesitamos ser considerados con respeto y estar dispuestos a dialogar y colaborar con las personas de otras edades en la edificación del reinado de Dios.

Oración: Dios joven, renueva en mí cada día un espíritu joven y alegre, de tal modo que mi vida toda pueda ser agradable a tus ojos. Amén.

WOMEN

1 CORINTHIANS 11:11-12

“Then he said to her, ‘Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.’”

Luke 8:48

Day by day we see an increase in the number of people who acknowledge the value of women and who are ready to grant them the role that has been denied them for centuries. In our own Presbyterian Church, in spite of our Lord’s teachings, women have been relegated and their participation in executive positions was once entirely nonexistent.  Within two days we will celebrate another anniversary of the Union of Presbyterian Women; a good occasion for remembering that we Christian women are called to reflect upon our responsibilities within and outside the Church.  We also aspire to achieve merit for women through our consideration and intellectual and spiritual training rather than on account of beauty or the simple fact of being female. More than ever before, today we are called to remember these verses:

 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us with perseverance run the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith…” (Hebrews 12:1-2)

Prayer: Beloved God, we pray to you for the women who courageously assume their roles as mothers, wives, and citizens of the Kingdom of God. Amen.

LA MUJER

1 CORINTIOS 11:11-12

“Pero él dijo a la mujer: Tu fe te ha salvado, ve en paz”

Lucas 8:48

Día a día aumenta el número de personas que reconoce los valores de la mujer y están dispuestos a cederle el rol que por siglos le ha sido negado. En nuestra propia Iglesia Presbiteriana, a pesar de las enseñanzas de nuestro Señor, también la mujer fue relegada y su participación en posiciones ejecutivas fue totalmente nula. Dentro de dos días celebraremos un aniversario más de la Unión de Mujeres Presbiterianas; buena ocasión para recordar que las mujeres cristianas estamos llamadas a reflexionar acerca de nuestras responsabilidades dentro y fuera de la Iglesia. También aspiramos a que los méritos para la mujer sean ganados por nuestra sensatez, preparación intelectual y espiritual y no por la belleza o nuestra simple condición de mujer. Hoy más que nunca estamos llamadas a recordar estos versículos:

“Por tanto, nosotras también teniendo en derredor tan grande nube de testigos despojémonos de todo el peso y del pecado que nos asedia y corramos con paciencia la carrera que tenemos por delante, puestos los ojos en Jesús, el autor y consumador de la fe.”

Oración: Dios amado, te suplicamos por las mujeres que asumen con valor su tarea de madre, esposa y ciudadana del Reino de Dios. Amén.

CONFESSION: A REQUISITE ATTITUDE

PSALM 51

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

1 John 1:9

Repentance and seeking reconciliation with God should be sacred moments in our walk of faith. Nothing acts more strongly against personal happiness and wellbeing as a sin that needs to be confessed and eliminated. Theresa of Jesus, the great Spanish mystic, said that our souls are like a mirror in which God’s glory is reflected. But that no matter how insignificant our sin may be, it covers the mirror in fog.

As Christians who love our Lord and want to please him, we constantly examine our words, actions, and even our attitudes. Anything that runs contrary to God’s will, should be confessed to Him who is faithful to renew us and cover us with his mercy.  There can be no victorious Christian life if we are not willing and able to carefully examine ourselves in thought, word, and deed.

Prayer: Lord, give me the sensitivity to sense anything that is contrary to your Holy Spirit.  Do not allow me to harbor any sin in my heart without confession. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

LA CONFESIÓN: OBLIGADA ACTITUD

SALMO 51

“Si confesamos nuestros pecados, Él es fiel y justo

para que nos perdone nuestros pecados,

y nos limpie de toda maldad”

1 Juan 1:9

El arrepentimiento y la búsqueda de reconciliación con Dios deben ser momentos sagrados en el camino de la fe.  Nada actúa tanto en contra de la felicidad y el bienestar personal como el pecado que debe ser confesado y eliminado. Teresa de Jesús, la gran mística española, decía que  nuestra alma es como un espejo en el cual se refleja la gloria de Dios. Pero el pecado no importa cuán insignificante sea, cubre el espejo con niebla.

El cristiano que ama a su Señor y desea complacerlo examina constantemente sus palabras, acciones y también sus actitudes. Cualquier cosa contraria a la voluntad de Dios deberá ser confesado a Aquel que es fiel para renovarnos y cubrirnos con su misericordia. No puede haber vida cristiana victoriosa si no estamos dispuestos a examinarnos cuidadosamente en pensamiento, palabra y obra.

Oración: Señor, hazme sensible a todo lo que es contrario a tu Santo Espíritu. No permitas que albergue ningún pecado sin confesar en mi corazón. Por Jesucristo nuestro Señor, Amén.

ALWAYS IN COMMUNION WITH GOD

JOSHUA 1:6-9

“Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

Joshua 1:8

After Moses died, God chose Joshua to lead his people. In addition to having the strength and courage to take possession of the Promised Land, Joshua would also need to meditate daily on the Book of the Law.  With the new demands, it would have been easy for Joshua to stay so busy that he would not have the time to be in communion with God. And yet, it was essential for him to do so in order to achieve his mission.

There are times when daily responsibilities make me feel knocked about by internal and extreme demands, consequently postponing my reading and meditating on the Bible.  When this happens, I begin to experience a state of spiritual imbalance, which does not allow me to discern God’s will. Let us always ask ourselves: Why am I too busy to devote time to God?

Prayer: Lord and God, give me tranquility and peace so that I may dedicate time to your Word in order to know you better. Teach us to treasure above all else those daily moments of communion with you. Amen.

 SIEMPRE EN COMUNIÓN CON DIOS

JOSUÉ 1:6-9

“Nunca se apartará de tu boca este libro de la ley, sino que de día y de noche meditarás en él , para que guardes  y hagas conforme a todo lo que en él está escrito”

Josué 1:8

Después de que murió Moisés, Dios escogió a Josué como líder de su pueblo. Josué, además de fortaleza y valor para tomar posesión de la tierra prometida;  necesitaría meditar diariamente sobre el Libro de la Ley. Con las nuevas exigencias, hubiera  sido fácil para Josué mantenerse tan ocupado que no tuviera tiempo para estar en comunión con Dios. Sin embargo, fue indispensable que lo hiciera para lograr su misión. En ocasiones, las responsabilidades diarias me hacen sentir zarandeada por demandas internas y extremas, postergando, a consecuencia de ellas, la lectura y meditación de la Biblia. Cuando esto sucede, comienzo a experimentar un estado de desequilibrio espiritual, que no me permite discernir la voluntad de Dios. Preguntémonos siempre: ¿Por qué estoy demasiado ocupada para dedicarle tiempo a Dios?

Oración: Señor y Dios, concédeme tranquilidad y paz para que pueda dedicar tiempo al estudio de tu Palabra para conocerte mejor. Enséñanos a atesorar por sobre todo lo demás esos momentos diarios de comunión contigo. Amén.
