WE CONTINUE CLUELESS
Mark 9:30-37

“It is you, Lord, who sustains my life.”
Psalm 54:4

Who are society’s “important” people? Not a few would say: those of higher learning, those we see frequently on television, a popular singer or a high performance athlete, or those who are applauded for the charge or the position they hold.

The disciples continued on clueless. Many Christians also exhaust themselves in struggles to be known as superior, the most important; meanwhile the fields remain “unsown.”

But things didn’t go that way for Jesus Christ. He thought differently. He tells us that the important people are those who serve; generally the anonymous men and women who sit in the unreserved seats and receive no tributes, but are devoted to simple and selfless service to others: People unaccustomed to receiving praise or flattery, but who worry for the sake of another’s happiness.
Jesus is definitely a “rare type;” we struggle to understand his way of thinking and to follow him; but when we imitate his style…My God, what a pleasure!

Prayer:  Lord, make me humble; make me able to recognize that what’s important in life isn’t smothered in applause or praise, rather in service. Amen.

SEGUIMOS SIN ENTENDER
Marcos 9:30-37

“Tú, Señor, eres quien sustentas mi vida”
Salmo 54:4

UNMENTIONABLE FEELINGS
1 Peter 2:1-3

“Let us not become conceited, competing against one another, envying one another.”
Galatians 5:26

There was once an eagle envious of another who could fly much better than she. One day the eagle saw a hunter with bow and arrow and said to him, “I want you to kill that eagle flying in the air.” The hunter said he could do it; he only needed some feathers for his arrow. So the jealous eagle plucked a feather from its wings. The hunter shot the arrow but it failed to reach its target because the other eagle was flying too high. The eagle pulled out another, and another, to the point at which she had lost so many feathers that she herself couldn’t fly. The archer took advantage of the situation, did a half turn and killed the jealous eagle.

Envy is the most unmentionable of human feelings. It’s so dangerous that it can move a person to desire the death of another. To be consumed by envy is terrible, it brings you suffering and a descent into hypocrisy, saying horrible things, and finally it makes you a destructive person.
“If you envy others it will be you who will be more damaged by your actions.”
Prayer:  Lord, don’t let me be envy’s captive, free me from suffering this evil. Amen.

SENTIMIENTOS INCONFESABLES
1 Pedro 2:1-3

Friday, September 18 SELF-ESTEEM Job 19:13-20

“I have loved you with an everlasting love;
Therefore, I have continued my faithfulness to you.”

Jeremíah 31:3

A professor shows a 20 dollar bill to his students and says, “Who would like to have this?” All the students raise their hands. He wrinkles up the bill and asks again, “Now who wants it?” The hands go up again. He tosses the crumpled bill to the floor, tramples it, and asks again, “Do you still want it?” The students answer yes, and raise their hands.

He then looks at them and says, “You have learned a very important lesson today: Although I have wrinkled up the bill, tossed it and trampled it, you still want it because its value hasn’t changed. It’s still a 20 dollar bill.”

As with Job, many times in life there are people who offend you, reject you, and the trials unnerve you. You feel worthless, but your value will never change for those people who genuinely love you. Even at your worst moment your value continues to be the same. Never doubt your value. You will always be valued greatly by the people who love you. Never but never will you be worth less, unless that’s the way you feel.

Prayer:  Lord, thank you because I know you love me and will never abandon me. Amen.

AUTOESTIMA
Job 19:13-20

POISONOUS RELATIONSHIPS
Acts 5:1-11

“how very good and pleasant it is
when kindred live together in unity”
Psalm 133:1

A scorpion once asked a frog to carry him across the river because he couldn’t swim.
“How will I know you won’t sting me?” asked the frog.
“If I do we’ll both drown,” he answered.
Whereupon the scorpion jumped on top of the frog. When they got midway across the scorpion bit him, and while they were drowning the frog said, “You promised you wouldn’t bite me. Why did you do it?”
The scorpion replied, “Sorry, I couldn’t help it, biting is part of my nature…”
Learn to recognize “poisonous” relationships in your Christian life, and move away before you go under with them. A relationship  that “poisons” is like a part of the body that has gangrene, if it’s not amputated the infection spreads. Lacking the courage to cut away the incurable you’ll end up by losing much more…
Prayer:  Lord, may we always live in good relationships with others. Amen.

RELACIONES VENENOSAS
Hechos 5:1-11

“¡Qué bueno es, y qué agradable,
que los hermanos convivan en armonía!”
Salmo 133:1

Wednesday, September 16 A FORMULA: THINK Leviticus 19:16

A FORMULA: THINK
Leviticus 19:16

“A perverse person spreads strife”
Proverbs 16:28

In one of the churches where I was once pastor I formed a companionship group to liven up the participants during a stressful time. The members followed a simple formula that they had to apply before talking about someone or about a controversial subject:
P-    is it productive?
                                       I-    does it inspire?
E-    is it edifying?
N-    is it necessary?
S-     is it sure?
A-      is it amicable?

If what I have to say doesn’t pass that test, I’ll keep my mouth shut! And it worked!!!

Gossip is something that destroys or annihilates people and the church; the damage it causes can never be completely repaired,  even though it’s shown that what was said doesn’t conform to the truth.

There’s no place for gossip in Christian life because gossip is abominable in the eyes of God.

Prayer:  My God, guard my mouth; guard the door of my lips so I am never a gossip. Amen.

UNA FÓRMULA: PIENSA
Levítico 19:16

“El chismoso aparta a los mejores amigos”
Proverbios 16:28

I-¿inspira?
E-¿edifica?

WHY ARE YOU DISCOURAGED?
Numbers 21:4-9

Weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.”
Psalm 30:5

There are moments in life at which one is tired.  Our problems add up, bad news increases, everything seems to be going wrong.  And just at those moments it seems as if God is not listening to the requested help and we become discouraged.
A young sailor was in his first battle, and when he saw the enemy’s bullets raining down, he nearly fainted.  One of the superior officers understood his terror and, stretching out his hand, tenderly said to him: --“Have courage, my boy!  You will be fine within a few moments; I had the same experience in my first battle!”
The young man survived and became an honored official, and frequently repeated the words of his superior officer as if an angel had come and breathed new life into him.  As of that moment he became more courageous than the others.
This is what will be done for all those who are dismayed and discouraged, who trust in him.  In the face of widespread discouragement, God guarantees his eternal favor.

Prayer:  Lord, you have given me the best of all gifts, life; and in order to do anything I need one thing alone: to be alive.  And I am alive! Amen.

¿POR QUÉ ESTÁS DESANIMADA?
Números 21:4-9

Tal vez lloremos durante la noche,
pero en la mañana saltaremos de alegría”
Salmo 30:5

Monday, September 14 A MATTER OF SCALE Luke 19:1-10

Monday, September 14
A MATTER OF SCALE
Luke 19:1-10

But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.
1 Corinthians 1:27

Isaac Watts was the author of many hymns which we sing today in church. Isaac was a man of ‘short stature’. In his adulthood, he wrote verses based on the following topic which, when translated into Spanish prose says: “If I were tall enough to cling to heaven itself by my hand, that would not be my true stature: the stature of man is his soul.”
Zacchaeus was also a man “of short stature,” but that was no impediment for the chief of tax collectors when it came to receiving Jesus’s favor, who when he saw him up in the tree, said to him: “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.”
A person’s stature is not measured by his physical height, or by his excellent intelligence, nor by the riches he possesses.  It is measured by his qualities, and, at the same time, by the service that he gives to God and to humans through their use.
God measures all human beings in this way, be they his servants or his enemies.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for not showing partiality among people, because you prefer the weak over the strong, the foolish over the wise. Amen.

CUESTIÓN DE ESCALA
Lucas 19:1-10

“Dios escogió a lo débil del mundo,
para avergonzar a lo fuerte”
1 Corintios 1:27
