A BOOK THAT CONSOLES
MICAH 2:7
“I rejoice at your word
like one who finds great spoil.”
Psalm 119:162
On one
occasion the brilliant philosopher Emmanuel Kant affirmed, “A simple line in
the Bible consoled me more than all the books I have read. The Bible, put at
everyone’s disposition, is the greatest benefit humanity has ever known.”
According
to his own affirmation, he realized that the Bible uniquely responds to our
need to be consoled.
Why does
the Bible have this gift of consolation? Because it puts us in contact with
God. Therefore, superficially or indifferently reading the Bible as though it
were a magazine doesn’t permit one to capture its message. What would we think
of a youth who read a letter from his beloved as though it were a scientific
article? The Bible must be read exactly as it’s presented, that is, as the Word
of God. It’s the only honest manner in which to read it, and the method to
understand its always relevant message.
When we
read it we are carried to God’s presence, to his thoughts and to his will.
Therefore, we need to read it with faith, respect, humility, trust, and with
the desire to apply it to our lives.
Prayer: Thank you, my great God for the immense gift
you gave us in the Bible. On reading it may we internalize its message in our
hearts. And grant that we not be passive listeners or readers, rather
instruments of your Word. Amen.

El brillante filósofo Emmanuel Kant afirmó en una
ocasión: “Una simple línea en la Biblia me consoló más que todos los libros que
he leído. La Biblia puesta al alcance de todos es el mayor beneficio que haya
podido conocer la humanidad”.
Según su propia afirmación, él se había dado cuenta de que la Biblia responde, de
forma única, a nuestra necesidad de ser consolados.
¿Por qué la Biblia tiene este don para consolar?
Porque ella nos pone en contacto con
Dios. Por eso, leer superficial o fríamente la Biblia, como si fuese una
revista, no permite captar su mensaje. ¿Qué pensaríamos de un joven que leyese
una carta de su novia como si fuera un artículo científico? Hay que leer la
Biblia tal y como ella se presenta, es decir, como la Palabra de Dios. Es la única manera honesta de leerla y
el método para comprender su mensaje siempre tan actual.
Cuando la leemos somos llevados a la presencia de
Dios, de sus pensamientos y de su
voluntad. Por ello tenemos que leerla con fe, respeto, humildad, confianza, y
con el deseo de aplicarla a nuestras vidas.
Oración: Gracias mi buen Dios, por el gran regalo que nos diste en
la Biblia. Permite que al leerla interioricemos su mensaje en nuestro corazón y
que no seamos oidores o lectores pasivos, sino hacedores de tu Palabra. Amén.
