            UNANSWERED PRAYERS

HABAKKUK 1:1-4

“How long, Lord, must I call for help

and you do not listen?”

Habakkuk 1:2

Who among us has not suffered due to an unanswered prayer? After all, we know that God can grant all the requests we make of him.

But what enormous chaos we’d have if God answered all our prayers in the way we desired! Remember, many times our prayers become selfish demands for security, economic stability, and vengeance disguised as justice when we have been hurt by something or someone.  No fewer are the times when God has us wait; and we are impatient to receive answers. Then we toss out Habakkuk’s lament:

“How long, Lord, must I call for help and you do not listen?”

Without doubt, God tells us “NO” in order to later give us what is truly good for us. His wisdom is incomprehensible to our limited human mind.

    

In the First Letter of John, chapter five, verse 14 we find the precise response to our supplications to God, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us…”

Prayer:  Lord, may our requests be supported by a pleasing behavior before you. May we be wise in asking, but above all, may we know to wait patiently for your response, which, although it may not be what our human attitude expected, is always what is best. Amen.

ORACIONES NO CONTESTADAS

“ ¿Hasta cuando oh Jehová, clamaré y no oirás…?”

Habacuc 1:2

¿Quién de nosotros no ha sufrido ante una oración no contestada? Sobretodo porque sabemos que Dios puede complacer todas las peticiones que se le hagan.

¡Pero qué caos tan grande tendríamos si Dios contestara todas nuestras oraciones en la forma como nosotros deseáramos! Reconozcamos que muchas veces nuestras oraciones se convierten en demandas egoístas de seguridad, estabilidad económica, venganza disfrazada de justicia una vez que hemos sido dañados por algo o alguien.

No son pocas las ocasiones en las Dios nos hace esperar ante una petición, y nosotros somos impacientes para recibir las respuestas. Entonces lanzamos el lamento de Habacuc: hasta cuándo Señor, clamaré y no me oirás...

Sin dudas, Dios nos dice “NO”, para luego concedernos lo que de verdad nos conviene. Su sabiduría es incomprensible para nuestra limitada mente humana.

En la primera carta de Juan 5: 14, encontramos la respuesta precisa a nuestras peticiones a Dios: Y ésta es la confianza que tenemos en él, que si pedimos alguna cosa conforme a su voluntad, él nos oye.

Oración: Señor, que nuestras peticiones sean respaldadas por una conducta agradable ante ti. Que seamos sabios al pedir, pero sobre todo que sepamos esperar con paciencia tu respuesta, que aunque no sea la esperada por nuestra actitud humana, es siempre la mejor. Amén.

WE ARE INSTRUMENTS IN THE HANDS OF GOD

LUKE 10:29-37

“Then Jesus said to him, go and do the same.”

Luke 10:37

Every Sunday I set out for the other side of town to find a niece and bring her to church. Forty-nine of the fifty-two weeks of the year had passed and I rejoiced inside, knowing that again she would receive the diploma given in the Sunday school to the brothers and sisters who had the best attendance during the year.  

That day was one of the Sundays in which my goal was not to miss Sunday school. On the way to find her I was caught up in my thoughts when a small girl walked out of her house, and shouting, begged me to help her grandmother who had fainted. When I entered and saw that situation, I quickly went out to the street asking God that he give me the means to take her to the hospital. A car appeared, and off we went to the hospital. On arriving at the Sunday school a little while later, the lessons had already ended.

There is an old saying which illustrates this: “Humans propose, God disposes.”

That’s the way it is. At times situations occur that change all our plans, but it is God’s hand itself that is working so that we may lend a necessary service to someone who needs it. Therefore, put your plans and your whole life in God’s hands, which is the best place they could be.

Prayer:  We pray, oh God, for all those who are alone, who have no family, especially for the elderly. Help us to be instruments of your love which heals and to conduct our lives according to your will. Amen.

SOMOS INSTRUMENTOS EN LAS MANOS DE DIOS

LUCAS 10:29-37

“Entonces Jesús le dijo: ve y haz tú lo mismo”

Lucas 10:37

Cada domingo me dirigía al otro extremo del pueblo a buscar a una sobrina mía para llevarla a la iglesia. Ya habían transcurrido 49 de los 52 domingos del año y me regocijaban internamente, sabiendo que de nuevo obtendría el diploma que se daba en la escuela  dominical a los hermanos y hermanas que tuvieran mejor asistencia durante el año.

Aquel día era uno de esos domingos en que mi meta era no faltar a la escuela dominical. Iba abstraído en mis pensamientos, cuando salió una niñita de su casa y gritando me suplicó que ayudara a su abuela que se había desmayado. Cuando entré y vi aquella situación, rápidamente me  dirigí a la calle pidiéndole a Dios que me proporcionara un medio de transporte para llevarla al hospital. Apareció un auto y hacia allá nos dirigimos. Un tiempo después, al llegar a la escuela dominical, esta había concluido.  Hay un antiguo refrán que ilustra esto: “El ser humano propone y Dios dispone”

Es así, a veces que ocurren situaciones que nos alteran todos nuestros planes, pero es la propia mano de Dios la que está obrando para que prestemos un servicio necesario a alguien que lo necesita. Por eso, ponga sus planes y su vida toda en las manos de Dios, que es donde mejor pueden estar.

Oración: Te pedimos oh Dios, por todos aquellos que están solos, que no tienen familia, especialmente por las personas ancianas. Ayúdanos a ser instrumentos de tu amor que sana y a conducir nuestras vidas según tu voluntad. Amén.

PRAYING HANDS

MATTHEW 25:31-46

“… truly I tell you,

just as you did it to one of the least of these

 who are members of my family,

you did it to me.”

Matthew 9:40

I remember that when I began to attend church more than thirty years ago, I understood the importance of intercessory prayer. That taught us not to be selfish, and also to ask God on behalf of our neighbor, especially for the sick, the needy, the hungry, the imprisoned, etc. But I also remember a story in which the father of a family prayed asking for God’s compassion toward the poor, that he help them in their needs and penury. At the end of the father’s prayer, his seven-year-old son said to him, “Papa, I want to be the owner of all the corn there is in our granary.” “Why?” asked the father. “Well, to begin answering your prayers,” responded the child.

We need to pray constantly, but our attitudes toward others should be centered more on action of solidarity, instead of a tepid intention. Reject the behavior of this man who asked God to be compassionate toward the poor while he his own storehouse overflowed with grain that he wouldn’t share with anyone.

We cannot talk about the sick and not go to visit them. We cannot talk about prisoners without seeing if there is something we can do for them or their families. We cannot ask others to come to church if we ourselves do not congregate and share the good news of Jesus Christ. May our supplications be lifted to God not only with our lips, but also with the action of a compassionate heart and praying hands.

Prayer:  Lord, today we pray for those who are experiencing material need, for the destitute, for prisoners, for those who lack medicines. Help us, Lord, to be in solidarity with them and share what we have. Amen.

MANOS ORANTES

MATEO 25:31-46

“… de cierto os digo que en cuanto lo hicisteis  a uno de estos

mis hermanos más pequeños, a mí lo hicisteis”

Recuerdo que cuando comencé a asistir a la iglesia hace más de treinta años, comprendí la importancia de la oración intercesora. Esta nos enseña a no ser egoístas y pedirle también a Dios por nuestro prójimo, especialmente por  los enfermos, los necesitados, los hambrientos, los presos, etc. Pero recuerdo también una historia en la que un padre de familia hizo una oración, y le pedía a Dios que fuese compasivo hacia los pobres, que los ayudara en sus necesidades y penurias. Al terminar de orar, su hijo de 7 años, le dijo: “Papá, yo quisiera ser dueño de todo el maíz  que hay en nuestro granero”.  “¿Para qué?”, preguntó el padre. “Pues  para comenzar a contestar tus oraciones?”, dijo el niño. Hay que orar en todo momento, pero nuestras actitudes hacia los demás deben ir más a la acción solidaria y no a una tibia intención. Rechacemos la conducta de este hombre que le pedía a Dios que fuera compasivo hacia los pobres, mientras él tenía sus almacenes abarrotados de granos y no los compartía con nadie. No podemos hablar de enfermos y no ir a visitarlos, no podemos hablar de presos sin ver si podemos hacer algo por ellos, o por sus familiares. No podemos decirle a los demás que vengan  a la iglesia si nosotros no nos congregamos y compartimos la buena noticia de Jesucristo. Que nuestras peticiones sean elevadas a Dios no sólo con nuestros labios, sino con la acción de un corazón compasivo  y unas manos orantes.

Oración: Hoy te pedimos Señor, por los que están pasando necesidades materiales, por los desvalidos, por los presos, por  los que carecen de medicinas. Ayúdanos Señor, a ser solidarios con ellos y a compartir lo que tenemos. Amén.

ON THE ROAD

ACTS 9:1-22

“As He neared Damascus on his journey,

suddenly a light flashed around him ”

Acts 9: 3

It was during a journey that Saul of Tarsus met Jesus. Perhaps some of us have known him in worship, in the loneliness and quiet of our home, or in an afternoon in the country. But Saul of Tarsus met him during the hustle and bustle of the march and the strains of a journey.

Nearly all of us have had similar experiences. Perhaps it was in pursuing our tasks, our objectives and plans, or in the twists and turns of our anxieties and problems where we had our decisive meeting with Jesus.

It’s very natural that Saul found himself with the Lord on the road. He was a man of action, a man of fighting; and he continued to be so, but now with a new ideal: to serve Jesus Christ.

    

What is your life’s journey? Are you happy with it? Has this journey been baptized with the presence of God? Are you traveling it with the endeavor of serving him?

Saul met the Lord on a journey. Place your journey, your work and your effort at Jesus’s feet. You also can have the blessed experience of Saul.

Prayer:  Beloved God, we ask you to direct our lives to the way that leads to you; may we take it. Amen.

POR EL CAMINO

HECHOS 9:1-22

“mas yendo por el camino...repentinamente

le rodeó un resplandor de luz del cielo...”

Hechos 9: 3

Fue en un camino que Saulo de Tarso conoció a Jesús. Algunos quizás lo han conocido en un culto en el templo, en la soledad y quietud de su habitación, o en una tarde en el campo. Pero Saulo de Tarso lo conoció en el trajín, la marcha y el esfuerzo de un camino.

Casi todos nosotros hemos tenido experiencias similares. Ha sido en el camino de nuestras tareas, de nuestros propósitos y planes, o en el camino de nuestras angustias y problemas, donde hemos tenido nuestro encuentro decisivo con Jesús.

Es muy natural que Saulo se encontrara con su Señor en un camino. Él era hombre de acción, hombre de lucha. Y en el camino de la acción y la lucha continuó, pero ahora con un nuevo ideal: servir a Jesucristo.

¿Cuál es el camino de tu vida? ¿Eres feliz en él? ¿Ha sido  este camino bautizado con la presencia de Dios? ¿Lo recorres con el empeño de servirle?

Fue en un camino que Saulo conoció  al Señor. Pon tu camino, tu obra y tu esfuerzo a los pies de Jesús. Tú también puedes tener la bienaventurada experiencia de Saulo.

Oración: Dios amado, te pedimos que nuestras vidas encuentren el camino que conduce a ti y caminemos por él. Amén.

   AWAIT THE LAST DAYS?

II TIMOTHY 3:1-17

“But mark this:

there will be terrible times in the last days.”

II Timothy 3:1

This biblical segment speaks of those negative behaviors such as egotism, jealousy, disobedience, vanity and so many others which affect our interpersonal relations. But what grabs my attention is that in the text these behaviors are related to the end times. We all like to speculate about final days.  Movies, the plastic arts, and even our daily lives portray various visions and perspectives of the end times.

We could ask ourselves: Why relate those evils to the final days? Haven’t there always existed proud, ungrateful, cruel and slanderous people since God created the world?      I don’t believe that space-time is important, but rather our human condition. What is important is how one can behave in whatever time: in the past, in the present, or in the future. We already see that through our attitudes we can inflict great pain on the divine creation. If our behavior doesn’t depend on a calendar, we need not await the end of the journey in our lives to do what is good and pleasing before God. May we improve and make our lives perfect each moment with the help of our Lord.

Prayer:  Lord, make me an instrument of your perfection, not for my personal glory but rather that yours may increase. Amen.

¿ESPERAR LOS ÚLTIMOS TIEMPOS?

II TIMOTEO 3:1-17

“… que en los postreros días vendrán tiempos peligrosos”

II Timoteo 3:1

Esta porción bíblica habla de aquellas conductas negativas como el egoísmo, la envidia, la desobediencia, la vanidad y tantas otras  que afectan nuestras relaciones interpersonales.

Pero lo que me llama la atención es que en el texto se relacionan estas conductas con la llegada de últimos tiempos. Mucho nos gusta especular sobre el final de los tiempos. En el cine, las artes plásticas y hasta en la vida cotidiana se muestran diversas visiones y perspectivas acerca de esto.

Podríamos preguntarnos: ¿Por qué relacionar estos males con el final de los tiempos? ¿Desde que Dios creó al mundo no ha habido personas orgullosas, ingratas, crueles, calumniadoras…?

Yo creo que lo importante no es el espacio-tiempo,  sino nuestra condición humana, cómo puede comportarse uno en cualquier tiempo: el pasado, presente o futuro. Pensemos que con nuestras actitudes podemos infringir gran dolor a la creación divina, provocando grandes caos. Que nuestro comportamiento no dependa de un calendario, no esperemos el final del camino en nuestras vidas para hacer lo bueno y agradable ante Dios. Seamos capaces de perfeccionar nuestra vida a cada momento con la ayuda de nuestro Señor.

Oración: Señor, hazme instrumento de tu perfección, no para engrandecerme yo, sino para engrandecerte a ti. Amén.

JOB’S FAITH

I PETER 1:7-9

“For you are receiving the end result of your faith;

the salvation of your souls.”

 I Peter 1:9

Job’s story is well known, his faith and patience; and that’s why I propose this meditation for the beginning of the trimester. I’d very much like, even without considering what the passing of days may have in store, for Job’s admirable patience and unbreakable faith to always be with us.

This man had lost everything: his children, his cattle and his house. He suffered from a grave illness that inflicted his body from head to foot. His wife encouraged him to curse his God. His friends accused him instead of comforting him. But even engulfed in that difficult situation, Job cries out: “I know my Redeemer lives, and my eyes will see him.” (Job 19: 25, 27)

    

What admirable faith shines in Job! He had lost everything, but God was still with him. He knew he had a Redeemer, a live Savior in whom he could trust. He possessed unshakeable security and a shatterproof trust in God.

What an example for us!

Today we have the Bible, the word of God and the Holy Spirit who helps us understand it. We have the privilege as Christians to know God through our Lord, Jesus. Let’s always dedicate ourselves, on happy as well as on difficult days, to feed our soul with this great hope: Our Redeemer lives!

Prayer:  Thank you God for Job’s faith which serves as an example. Grant that our faith were at least like a mustard seed. Amen.

 LA FE DE JOB

I PEDRO 1:7-9

“obteniendo el fin de vuestra fe,

que es la salvación de vuestras almas”

 I Pedro 1:9

Es bien conocida la historia de Job, su fe y su paciencia; y es por eso que propongo esta meditación para el comienzo del trimestre. Me gustaría mucho que, sin importar lo que nos deparara el transcurso de los días, siempre nos acompañara esta fe inquebrantable y la paciencia admirable de Job.

Este hombre lo había perdido todo: sus hijos, su ganado y su casa. Padecía de una enfermedad muy grave que lo hacía sufrir de los pies a la cabeza. Su mujer lo animó a maldecir a su Dios. Sus amigos, en vez de animarlo, lo acusaban. Pero en medio de esa situación tan difícil, Job exclamó: “Yo sé  que mi Redentor vive… y mis ojos lo verán”  (19:25,27)

¡Qué admirable fe brillaba en Job! Lo había perdido todo, pero le quedaba Dios. Sabía que tenía un Redentor, un Salvador vivo en quien confiar. Poseía una gran su seguridad y una inquebrantable confianza en Dios.

¡Qué ejemplo para nosotros! Hoy tenemos la Biblia, la Palabra de Dios y el Espíritu Santo que nos ayuda a comprenderla. Como cristianos, tenemos el privilegio de conocer a Dios a través de nuestro Señor Jesús. Dediquémonos en todo tiempo, tanto en los días felices como en los días difíciles, a alimentar nuestra alma con esta gran esperanza: ¡Nuestro Redentor vive!

Oración: Gracias Dios, por esta fe de Job que tenemos de ejemplo. Ojalá la nuestra fuese al menos como un grano de mostaza. Amén.

     Through its Department of Publications, our Presbyterian Reformed Church in Cuba makes available a new issue of the devotional Su Voz to the Christian community, with numerous reflections and testimonies filled with deep inspiration.

     We are all witnesses to the times in which we live, filled with tensions and anxieties. Many times our lives are marked by stress, discouragement, loneliness and fear. God’s word gives an answer to these situations, encouraging, stimulating, and fortifying us. 

    The meditations in this devotional are the experiences of the brothers and sisters of our communities who have felt – in the midst of their difficulties – God’s close presence in their lives. We are convinced of the usefulness of these pages. Our greatest satisfaction would be that our devotional may become your intimate company, an inseparable friend to give praise to God day and night.

Nuestra Iglesia Presbiteriana Reformada en Cuba, a través de su Departamento de Publicaciones, pone al alcance del pueblo cristiano un nuevo número del Devocionario  Su Voz, con  numerosas reflexiones y testimonios cargados de profunda inspiración.
