THE BUTTERFLY AND THE FLOWER

PSALM 4: 1-8

I will both lie down and sleep in peace;

for you alone, O LORD, make me lie down in safety.

Psalm 4:8

Once a man asked God for a flower . . . and a butterfly. But God gave him a cactus . . . and a caterpillar. The man was sad because he didn’t understand how his prayer had gone awry.

Then he thought, “With so many people to look after . . .” and he resolved not to question it. After a while, the man went to check on the response about which he had forgotten. To his surprise, the spiny and ugly cactus had borne really beautiful flowers, and the horrible caterpillar was transformed into a most lovely butterfly.

God always does the right thing. His pathway is the better one, although to our eyes it appears that it’s totally wrong. If you ask God for something and receive something else, have faith. Hang on to the assurance that He will always give what you need at the appropriate time. It is not always what you want, but what you need. As God never fails to respond to prayers, go ahead without doubt or murmuring. Today’s cactus spine will be tomorrow’s flower.

Likewise, the Psalmist recognizes that he can lie down in peace, even in the midst of anxiety and problems, because God is faithful and will give the needed protection. Let’s pray with faith and hope with confidence for God’s response.

Prayer: Teach me, Lord, to accept your will without doubting that your plans are the perfect ones for my life. May this Lent be a time of preparation that I may find strength, that I may make my desires yield to your will.  Amen.

LA MARIPOSA Y LA FLOR

SALMO 4: 1-8

En paz me acostaré, y asimismo dormiré;

Porque sólo tú Yahvé, me haces vivir confiado

Cierta vez, un hombre pidió a Dios una flor.... y  una mariposa. Pero Dios le dio un cactus... y una oruga.  El Hombre quedó triste, pues no entendió por qué su pedido llegó errado.

Luego pensó: “Con tanta gente que atender....”  Y resolvió no cuestionar. Pasado algún tiempo, el hombre fue a verificar el pedido que dejó olvidado. Para su sorpresa, del espinoso y feo cactus  había nacido la más bella de las flores y la horrible oruga se transformó en  una bellísima mariposa.

Dios siempre hace lo correcto. Su camino es el mejor, aunque a nuestros ojos parezca que todo está errado. Si pediste a Dios una cosa y recibiste otra, confía. Ten la seguridad de que Él siempre dará lo que necesitas en el momento adecuado. No siempre lo que deseas, es lo que necesitas.

Como Dios nunca falla al responder las oraciones, sigue adelante sin dudar, ni murmurar. La espina de hoy será la flor de mañana.

Asimismo el salmista reconoce que puede descansar en paz, aún en medio de la angustia y los problemas, porque Dios es fiel y dará la protección esperada. Pidamos con fe y esperemos con confianza por la respuesta de Dios.

Oración: Enséñame Señor, a aceptar tu voluntad sin dudar en que tus planes son los perfectos para mi vida. Que esta Cuaresma sea un tiempo de preparación para encontrar la fortaleza, que haga rendir mis deseos a tu voluntad. Amén.

del desaliento a la esperanza,
de la indiferencia al compromiso,
de la oscuridad a la luz,
de la mentira a la verdad,
de la estupidez a la sabiduría,

JESUS, THE SON OF GOD

MATTHEW 14:22-33

Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him,

“You of little faith, why did you doubt?”

In the second half of the first century, the Christian community was undergoing many difficulties. Palestine, the land of Jesus’ birth, was left behind. Now the Church was making its way in an unfriendly world and with a powerful enemy: Rome. As enthusiastic as Christians were about the Gospel, it was not easy to bear witness if they could only barely survive.

The Church found itself surrounded by forces hostile to its beliefs, and on any day there was the possibility of opening a new Pandora’s box with all of its calamities. The Roman world did not honor the standards of the Christian faith, and many pagans questioned whether or not they had the right to justice or even to life itself. It wasn’t easy to “stay afloat.” Everything threatened imminent shipwreck.

It is in these circumstances that the writer of Matthew tells a memorable story about Peter. It was the story of what was almost a disaster, a near-drowning, the day he wanted to walk on the waters. The wind was blowing fiercely and threatened to toss him into the waves. Horrified, Peter shouted, Lord, save me! Jesus reached out his hand and saved him from his fright.

The disciples and the writer of the Gospel saw in this experience dramatic evidence of God’s power. They knew him as the Master of the forces that are present in every one of life’s encounters with devastation. He had no equal. It was a lesson that they needed to learn, a lesson that we need to learn.

Let’s shout to the Lord like Peter: Save me! The Lord will do his part.

Prayer: To you, Lord, we shout like Peter: Save me!  Amen.

JESÚS, EL HIJO DE DIOS

MATEO 14:22-33

Al momento Jesús, extendiendo  la mano, asió de él, y le dijo: ¡Hombre  de poca fe! ¿Por qué dudaste?

En la segunda mitad del primer siglo, la comunidad cristiana estaba experimentando muchas dificultades. Palestina, la tierra en la que nació Jesús, quedaba atrás. La Iglesia ahora se estaba abriendo paso en un mundo sin simpatía y con un enemigo poderoso: Roma. Por entusiastas que fueran los cristianos acerca del Evangelio, no era nada fácil ofrecer un testimonio, si apenas podían sobrevivir.

La Iglesia se encontraba rodeada de fuerzas hostiles a sus creencias y cualquier día cabía la posibilidad  de que se abriera una nueva caja de Pandora  con todas sus calamidades. El mundo romano  no honraba los estandartes de la fe cristiana y muchos paganos ponían en duda si debieran o  no tener derecho a la justicia y la vida misma. No era fácil “mantenerse a flote”. Todo amenazaba naufragio inminente.

En estas circunstancias el escritor del libro de Mateo, recordó una historia memorable acerca de Pedro. Era la historia de lo que fue casi un desastre, un verdadero naufragio. El día que quiso caminar sobre las aguas. El viento estaba soplando fuertemente y amenazaba con lanzarlo a las olas. Horrorizado Pedro exclamó: Señor, sálvame. Jesús extendió Su mano y lo rescató de su terror. Los discípulos y el escritor del Evangelio vieron en esta experiencia una evidencia dramática del poder de Dios. Ellos le conocían como el Señor de las fuerzas presentes en cada encuentro devastador de la vida. No había nadie igual. Fue una lección que ellos tenían que aprender, es una lección que nosotros tenemos que aprender. Clamemos al Señor como Pedro: ¡Sálvame! ¡El Señor hará su parte!

WOMEN WHO SING AND PRAY

EXODUS 15:1-21

And Miriam sang to them:

“Sing to the LORD, for he has triumphed gloriously;

horse and rider he has thrown into the sea.”

Exodus15:21

The first Friday of March, churches in many countries around the world observe this special occasion: World Day of Prayer.  Every year groups of women from different denominations in a specific country prepare materials with liturgical and biblical submissions which encourage solidarity with and prayer for the suffering and challenges of that host country. Moreover, the celebration affirms the cultural riches, the successes and hopes of that country. It is truly a testimony of worship and prayer with songs committed to God’s justice and thanksgiving for his saving grace.

In the reading for the day a woman lifts a song of gratitude, a song which invites prayerful reflection. The people had just passed through the Red Sea. Miriam takes a tambourine and in a gesture of thanksgiving declares the magnificence and the justice of God the Liberator. She acknowledges that with the help of God it has been possible to defeat the army of slavery.

The witness of Miriam and of the women from all around the world inspires us to lift our prayers

to God as songs that truly praise his mercy amid the challenges that face us.

Prayer: Today, together with Miriam, we sing in gratitude to you, O God of history, for your many deeds of liberation in our lives. We pray for the women of the Philippines who this year bear responsibility for preparing materials for the World Day of Payer. Hear their voice in the midst of their sorrows and hopes.  Amen.

MUJERES QUE CANTAN Y ORAN

ÉXODO 15:1-21

Y María les respondía: cantad a Yahvé, porque en extremo se ha engrandecido; ha echado en el mar al caballo y al jinete

El primer viernes de marzo tiene lugar esta celebración ecuménica observada por iglesias en muchos países del mundo: el Día Mundial de Oración. Cada año, grupos de mujeres de diferentes denominaciones y de un país determinado, preparan un material con propuestas litúrgicas y bíblicas que animan a la solidaridad y a la oración por los dolores y desafíos de ese país sede. La celebración afirma además las riquezas culturales, los aciertos y esperanzas de esa nación. Es un verdadero testimonio de adoración y oración. Un canto comprometido con la justicia de Dios y una acción de gracias sincera por su acción salvífica. En el texto de hoy, una mujer eleva un canto de gratitud, un canto que invita a la reflexión y a la acción orante. El pueblo había acabado de pasar el mar Rojo. Miriam toma un pandero y en un gesto de acción de gracias, reconoce la grandeza y la justicia del Dios liberador. Ella reconoce que con la ayuda de Dios ha sido posible vencer ejércitos de esclavitud.

El testimonio de Miriam y de las mujeres de todo el mundo nos inspira a elevar nuestros oraciones a Dios como verdaderos cánticos que reconocen su misericordia en medio de los desafíos de nuestro contexto.

Oración: Hoy cantamos junto a Miriam en agradecimiento a ti, oh Dios de la historia, por tus múltiples acciones de liberación en nuestras vidas. Te pedimos por las mujeres de Filipinas, quienes nos traen en este año la propuesta celebrativa del Día Mundial de Oración. Responde a su clamor en medio de sus dolores y esperanzas. Amén

HIS SACRIFICE FOR HUMANITY

JOHN 3:14-18

For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son,

so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.

John 3:16

The greatest act of love is when one human being gives his life for others. And that is what Jesus did in an act of greatest love in which his sacrifice for humanity was pure and honest. I believe that God considers all of us worthy of going to Him; otherwise He would have had no reason to send his Son to give himself up for us.

Jesus came so that we might stop practicing religiosity filled with empty rituals which have nothing to do with their commitment to abundant life. It is time to take Jesus’ path to where it ultimately leads us.

But he didn’t just stop there; he spoke of a second coming which some already perceive in their hearts, because that it where it lives.  But as before, we don’t always know how to recognize it. Let us seek Jesus in the deepest part of our hearts. If you seek, He will make known his presence.

Sometimes the divine plan is not what we believe. We thought that Jesus came to be a great King or ruler, but it wasn’t so. No one ever imagined that the Son of God would be humiliated and crucified; nevertheless, we are not capable of understanding God’s plans.

Jesus is already here amid our hearts.  Let’s give witness to his presence.

Prayer: Thank you, Jesus, for giving up your life for me.  Let me respond to this act of good will with my daily actions.  Amen.

SU ENTREGA A LA HUMANIDAD

JUAN 3:14-18

Porque de tal manera amó Dios al mundo, que ha dado a su Hijo unigénito, para que todo aquel que en el crea,

no se pierda, más tenga vida eterna

Juan3:16

El acto de más grande amor es cuando un ser humano da la vida por los demás. Y eso fue lo que hizo Jesús en un acto del más elevado amor en el que su entrega a la humanidad fue pura y honesta.

Creo que Dios considera que todos somos dignos de ir hacia Él, pues si no fuera así, no habría tenido motivo alguno de enviar a su Hijo para que se entregara por nosotros.

Jesús vino para que dejáramos de practicar la religiosidad llena de ritos vacíos que nada tienen que ver con su compromiso con la vida abundante. Es hora de asumir ese camino que es Jesús hasta las últimas consecuencias.

Pero no todo quedó ahí: habló de una segunda venida, que algunos ya la perciben en sus corazones, pues allí es donde lo pueden encontrar vivo, solo que al igual que antes, no lo sabemos reconocer.

Busquemos a Jesús en lo más profundo de nuestros corazones. Si lo buscan, Él  nos hará sentir su presencia.

A veces el plan divino no es como lo creemos. Pensábamos que Jesús iba a ser un gran Rey o gobernante y no fue así. Nunca nadie imaginó al hijo de Dios humillado y crucificado, sin embargo no somos capaces de entender los planes de Dios.

Jesús ya está aquí, en medio de nuestros corazones. Demos testimonio de su presencia.

Oración: Gracias Señor Jesús, por entregar tu vida por mí. Permíteme reciprocar este acto de buena voluntad con mi accionar diario. Amén.

REFLECTION ON LENT

REFLECTION ON LENT

Lent is that time that comes and goes, a time to live in journey, without settling in, without holding on, without regret, with hope always just under the surface and our gaze fixed on another time, which is definite, Easter. You who have been baptized, you who have listened to the voice of the Spirit, you who have welcomed the revelation of the living God, you who have discovered that you are his children, enter the desert without fear and with a light step.

Enter Lent assured, prepared for battle, light of baggage, of a clear mind, full of tenderness and mercy, properly shod, and very patient with yourselves. Let yourselves be stirred by the wind of the Spirit; put your heart in tune with God’s heartbeats and the cry of the afflicted; drink from the springs of life and don’t let yourselves be deceived by desert mirages.

Come down from the mountain into the paths of life; come down without fear and filled with mystery. Don’t profane living temples; search in the night like Nicodemus, and like those Greeks, ask to see Jesus and his realm and how to sow seeds in the field of this world that they may germinate in his manner. Experience Lent wide awake, walking in community with faith, hope and love, with your eyes fixed on Jesus. Take that opportunity!

REFLEXIÓN EN CUARESMA

Cuaresma es ese tiempo que viene y va, tiempo para vivirlo en camino, sin instalarse, sin retenerlo, sin lamento, con la esperanza siempre a flor de piel y la mirada fija en otro tiempo, la Pascua, que es definitivo. Los que habéis sido bautizados, los que habéis escuchado la voz del Espíritu, los que habéis acogido la revelación del Dios vivo, los que habéis descubierto que sois sus hijos, ¡Adentraos en el desierto sin miedo y caminad con paso ligero!

Entrad en Cuaresma convencidos, listos para el combate, ligeros de equipaje, la mente despejada, entrañas llenas de ternura y misericordia, calzado apropiado, y mucha paciencia con vosotros mismos. Dejaos mecer por la brisa del Espíritu, poned vuestro corazón en sintonía con los latidos de Dios y el grito de los afligidos, bebed en los manantiales de la vida y no os dejéis engañar por los espejismos del desierto.

Bajad del monte a los caminos de la vida, bajad sin miedo y llenos de misterio. No profanéis los templos vivos, buscad de noche como Nicodemo y, como aquellos griegos, preguntad a discípulos y amigos por Jesús y su reino y cómo sembrarse en el campo del mundo para germinar a su estilo. Vivid la Cuaresma bien despiertos, caminando en comunidad, con fe, esperanza y amor, fijos los ojos en Jesús. ¡Daos esa oportunidad!

 INSTRUCTIONS FOR FASTING IN LENT

ISAIAH 58: 1-8

Look, you fast only to quarrel and to fight

and to strike with a wicked fist.

Such fasting as you do today will not make your voice heard on high.

Isaiah 58:4

Today we begin the season of Lent, a time in which we should ask God with all our heart to renew us every day. Let me share with you the following reflection:

Fast from hurtful words, and pass on kind words.

Fast from discontent, and fill yourself with gratitude

Fast from anger, and be filled with meekness and patience.

Fast from pessimism, and fill yourself with hope and optimism.

Fast from worrying, and be filled with faith in God.

Fast from complaining, and fill yourself with the simple things of life.

Fast from pressures, and fill yourself with prayer.

Fast from judging others, and discover Jesus who is alive in them.

Fast from sorrow and bitterness, and be filled with a joyful heart.

Fast from selfishness, and be filled with compassion for others.

Fast from failure to forgive, and be filled with an attitude of reconciliation.

Fast from words, and be filled with silence and with listening to others.

Prayer: Father, we ask for your blessing in this season of Lent. Renew my heart. Amen.

Comienza la Cuaresma

 INSTRUCCIONES PARA AYUNAR EN CUARESMA

Isaías 58: 1-8

He aquí que para contiendas y debates ayunáis

y para herir con el puño inicuamente; no ayunéis como hoy,

para que vuestra voz sea oída en lo alto

Isaías 58:4

Hoy comenzamos la Cuaresma, tiempo donde debemos pedirle a  Dios de todo corazón que nos renueve cada día. Comparto con ustedes la siguiente reflexión:

Ayuna de palabras hirientes

y transmite palabras bondadosas.

Ayuna de descontento y llénate de gratitud.

Ayuna de enojos y llénate de mansedumbre

 y paciencia.

Ayuna de pesimismo y llénate de esperanza

 y optimismo.

Ayuna de preocupaciones y llénate

de confianza en Dios.

Ayuna de quejarte llénate de las cosas

sencillas de la vida.

Ayuna de presiones y llénate de oración.

Ayuna de juzgar a otros y descubre a Jesús

que vive en ellos.

Ayuna de tristeza y amargura y llénate

de alegría el corazón.

Ayuna de egoísmo y llénate de compasión

por los demás.

Ayuna de falta de perdón y llénate de

actitudes de reconciliación.

Ayuna de palabras. Y llénate de silencio

y de escuchar a otros.

Oración: Padre, te pedimos tu bendición en esta época de Cuaresma. Renueva mi corazón. Amén.
