FAITHFULNESS TO GOD
ECCLESIASTES 12:1-14

Remember your creator in the days of your youth…

     Ecclesiastes 12:1

This is the final verse in the book of Ecclesiastes; and I’d say it’s the most judicious conclusion of the wise man. Youth is the pillar of our church. The youth develop important ministries in our communities. There are useful and active elements in their enthusiasm that can ignite the necessary flame to mobilize our church when it languishes or becomes stale.

Some youth are very active in the life of their churches. For others, it would be good to ask them, “Why don’t you make good use of your youth by pledging yourself completely to the service of God in your church?” Ecclesiastes, as preacher, encourages the young people to take care of their youthfulness, to be watchful of their actions and conduct and to fear God both day and night. Remember the Psalmist’s words when he said, “…where can I run from your presence?”

God sees the depths of our hearts, and knows our good intentions. If you are on your journey, and you have decided to surrender yourself to His service, then empty your heart and soul before Him. Forget what the world might bring, and follow Him.

Youth, adult, or elderly, reflect on chapter twelve of Ecclesiastes, and may God give you the necessary wisdom to begin the journey you’ve decided to take.

Prayer:  We pray to you, eternal God, with the desire that our youth continue in your ways, with responsibility and commitment to your work. Help them in their hour of decision. Amen.

Aniversario de la Iglesia en Iguará
¡FIDELIDAD A DIOS!

JOY EVEN IN SUFFERING
LUKE 9:18-27

The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders,
the chief priests and the teachers of the law,
and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.
Luke 9: 22

It is true that our human sufferings needn’t be an obstacle to the joy and peace we so desire; rather, they can be a means to achieve that joy and peace. The great secret of the spiritual life of Christ’s followers is that all that we experience, whether it be joy or sadness, happiness or pain, health or illness, can be part of the passage toward the completion of our humanity, our human condition.

It’s easy to say to ourselves, “All that is good and beautiful leads us to the glory of the sons and daughters of God.” But it’s very hard to say, “Didn’t you know that all must suffer this way to enter into our glory?”

Don’t attempt to practice the famous refrain: “put a good face on during evil times”: rather, experience the joy our hearts feel for God’s company despite the problems. This will assist in converting our laments into dance. May we trust that with God’s help our affliction can be the portal to joyfulness.

Prayer:  Lord, you who conquered temptation, we ask that you give us strength to trust in you for the times we’re tempted to worry about something. May this Lent be a time to strengthen our faith and to seek your mercy. Amen.

ALEGRÍA AUN EN EL SUFRIMIENTO
LUCAS 9:18-27

Friday, March 10 SAY NO TO IMPATIENCE HABAKKUK 3:17-19

Friday, March 10
SAY NO TO IMPATIENCE
HABAKKUK 3:17-19

yet I will rejoice in the LORD; I will exult in the God of my salvation.

Habakkuk 3:18

Have you ever felt that you needed to pray for something until God answers? There are times when we have to do just that. At other times we simply place the problem before the Lord. We are impatient. At times we ask ourselves, “Why doesn’t God respond quickly?” At times God responds and we hasten to praise him, but it’s often not so. Do we praise God then? We want our prayers to change things; we want to see lives transformed without noticing that the work of God is a progressive and long process.

Let’s also remember how often our prayer is a capricious whim and we refuse to accept God’s blunt reply,

Finally, look at the seasons of the year. The dream of Winter gives way slowly to the new life of Spring, and it takes time for fruit to sprout and mature. God sometimes works this way in the life of the people for whom we pray. Winter is long, but Spring always comes.

Let’s not allow impatience or a lack of faith to be obstacles in our relationship with God. Let’s dedicate much of our time to intercessory prayer, and let’s always respond with praise, even when the response is not what we expected.

Prayer: Lord, help me to have faith that you perform your works by your will and in your time. Amen.

NO A LA IMPACIENCIA
HABACUC 3:17-19

TREASURES STORED IN MEMORY
MATTHEW 4:1-11

'One does not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"

Matthew 4:4

In the times in which we are living, the refrigerator is a very important feature, not only for dispensing cold water to refresh ourselves on very hot days, but also because we have to keep our food from spoiling. A broken refrigerator is a huge problem for us. This is really a good analogy to what is called the feeding of the soul. It’s a wise idea to keep our spiritual food for those days when life seems especially hard and our existence is filled with difficulties.

Memorizing passages and sections of the Bible is a useful practice for many Christians, although perhaps it is a custom that is disappearing. Memorizing or writing those sections of the word which speak to us about God’s love make up true treasures for a needy life. We can also treasure in our memories the experiences of God’s love in the company of the faithful during difficult periods of our lives.

Of course, we mustn’t let these treasures sit around to spoil; we need to make use of them at the appropriate time.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, help me to remember your words of hope.  Amen.

TESOROS ALMACENADOS EN EL RECUERDO
MATEO 4:1-11

Wednesday, March 8 Women’s Day HEALED AND RESTORED LUKE 13: 11-13

Wednesday, March 8
Women’s Day

HEALED AND RESTORED
LUKE 13: 11-13

When he laid his hands on her,
immediately she stood up straight and began praising God.

 Luke 13: 13

The woman in this story was carrying a huge and painful burden. Having a physical illness drew contempt from everyone around her.

This woman believed the words of Jesus, the liberator of the suffering, and she experienced healing of her body and her soul. She began to live without sorrows, ostracism, worries and loneliness. With his transforming power, Jesus enabled her to see the light in her life. We may find ourselves in similar situations and seize the opportunity to seek help.  Ask Jesus to eliminate your pains and sorrows, and he will work in you.

Using the metaphor of this text, let us consider how many women in the world live with burdens so heavy they can scarcely stand up straight. Ostracism, violence, machismo, all are without doubt such heavy burdens that they cause pain and suffering in the lives of many women. Just as Jesus empowered this woman because of her faith, it is time that our churches instigate acts that free and straighten out the lives of these women. Like Jesus, we only need to supply the process of transformation; they themselves, with their witness of faith, will be able to feel the restoration and the fullness that leads them to praise the God of justice.

Prayer:  Lord, allow us to be a Church that is supportive and just; which alleviates the pain of women and heals their wounds. Amen.

Día de la Mujer

SANADA Y RESTAURADA
LUCAS 13: 11-13

Tuesday, March 7 RESOLVE ROMANS 14:1-13

Tuesday, March 7
RESOLVE
ROMANS 14:1-13

But resolve instead never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of another.
Romans 14:13

Faith and conviction don’t mean the same thing. In the first century, the religious traditions based on the Law were so important for the religious leaders that they failed to recognize who it was that embodied the Law: Jesus. They were so focused on minutiae that they neglected the major issues. Scripture says that we need to subjugate both our beliefs and our convictions to the law of love (Romans 13: 8,10; Galatians 5:14; James 2:8) because love fulfills the law and leads to peace and mutual edification.

When our choices and preferences become more important to us than what God says is precious to Him, it shows that we have made idols of our own beliefs. Idolatry is a grave offense because it violates the first and most important commandment: “You shall have no other gods before me.” (Exodus 20:3)

Let us resolve not to raise our own opinions over those of God, lest they become a stumbling block and hinder others from knowing the love of Jesus.

Prayer:  Lord, grant that first in our lives may be love, as you teach us. May we not stifle your Word with our lies and personal interests.  Amen.

Translated by John Potter

RECOGNIZING THE ANGELS OF GOD
1  SAMUEL 20: 1-4

Then Jonathan said to David, “Whatever you say, I will do for you.”
 1 Samuel  20: 4

One of the most widespread illnesses in society is depression. It is not limited to any age, sex, race, or social class. It has many causes. But the most worrisome effect of this disease is that it leads its victims into a state of profound sadness and pain. When people are depressed, they lose energy and prefer to shut themselves inside of themselves and concentrate on their problems.

David was in this state when he realized that Saul hated him, but God sent a cure: a faithful friend, Jonathan. God always places in our path people who are a manifestation of his love, of his care. God always extends his hand and says to you, “Come to me!”

Depression changes you into someone barren of creativity and optimism. Look around you and notice those angels of God who are camped around you. Don’t be afraid today. Leave off concentrating your thoughts on pain and suffering and trust in God and in God’s angels.

Prayer: God of love, forgive us when stress and depression make us lose faith in you. Toughen us to face our obstacles and grant that we may recognize the angels you send to help us.  Amen.

RECONOCIENDO LOS ÁNGELES DE DIOS
1  SAMUEL 20: 1-4
